They thought it was a nice idea to end their senior year of high school by going stargazing.
Gin looked up at the stars. Her eyes shined at the sight of the millions of little yellow sparks that iluminated the infinite sky. Her black hair mirrored the deep color of the midnight sky; she had let it loose, for this time only, and she wasn't wearing the facemask she always wore, either. She felt safe, after all, being with the person she had by her side.
Gin turned to look at the girl lying down next to her on the cold grass, looking like she was in love with what the universe had to offer. They had been talking about how they would spend their last day as high school students millions of times when they were younger, but Gin would've never thought it would be like this.
How did she get so lucky?
Gin recalled the day she had met Higuchi, back when they were in middle school. She had been wearing her short blonde hair up in a ponytail, her hands moved nervously as the teacher introduced her to the class and the shy smile on her face made her look kind and sweet. Gin had been lying on her desk, lost in her thoughts, when she suddenly saw the shimmer of yellow locks across the room and a pair of deep brown eyes looking around the classroom. Gin knew exactly from that moment that she wanted to be her friend.
Why?
Was it because of her natural habit of caring for others that Gin felt drawn to her? Higuchi was known for her warm aura, an aura that immediately catched you due to how sweet and safe her eyes looked whenever she perceived you felt lost. Her eyes where like home. Gin had always felt that.
Both girls were different from each other. Gin had always been quiet and reserved; she rarely opened up about how she was feeling, so it had been more difficult for her to form frienships she could hold so close to her heart. What made her connect to Higuchi, then?
Was it the fact that she had always admired how strong-minded Higuchi was? Gin remembered the million times Higuchi made her feel like she belonged in this world, that she was enough . Was it how she always seemed to be sure of what she was doing, even when Gin could tell she was insecure of her decisions?
Was it, maybe, because of that moment when they first spoke that Gin started to grow attached to her?
It was middle school. Gin had been sitting outside, admiring the blue sky that showed itself majestically before her. Her hair had been up in her characteristic ponytail and she had been wearing a scarf to prevent her from catching a cold. That day was freezing, she remembered, but she still had decided to go outside because there was something about the sky that made her feel safe. Gin had always liked looking up at the sky. She had been lost in the clouds and the soft breeze of autumn, when a young blonde girl had approached her, and asked if she could join her. She was wearing her hair up in a bun now, hands behind her back depicting a shy and nervous look on her soft face, wild yellow locks hanging from behind her ears. Gin had looked at her and had nodded, feeling a strange sense of peace she could recognize as trust . The girl's aura felt so honest and warm that Gin felt the sudden need to have her by her side. She had looked at her, at that time, and had felt like that person was someone worth having in your life. Gin couldn't decipher how she knew, but maybe there wasn't a logic explanation to it.
It was just something that she felt on her chest. In her heart.
They became inseparable after that, after sharing a bench at recess, looking up at the sky that seemed to be hugging them both, carelessly talking about whatever came through their young minds.
"What is it, Gin?" Higuchi lifted her head from the grass to have a better look at Gin, who was a couple of centimeters away from where she was.
Gin smiled. "You always notice when I look at you, dont you?"
Higuchi sat down in front of Gin, now looking at her in the eyes, her legs crossed. "Always had. Since the moment i sat next to you at the bench in middle school"
Her eyes had trapped Gin again, a warm brown color almost lost within the black landscape of the night. That was something she wasn't able to escape from.
Higuchi lyed back down onto the grass and waved at Gin to come closer to her. She crawled next to the blonde girl, tucking her black hair away from her face, and was about to lie down next to Higuchi when she felt a hand just above her waist. Gin didn't expect to end up wrapped in Higuchi's arms, resting her head on her chest, listening to her heartbeat which made Gin smile in a way she would've never thought to. She felt vulnerable, but she wasn't scared.
She still couldn't believe the girl she had been friends with since middle school loved her. She felt safe.
Higuchi's blonde hair was untied too. Both of their hair colors seemed to represent how each of the girls were opposite from eachh other. Higuchi was outgoing, confident and wore her heart on her sleave. Gin was reserved, pensive and enjoyed playing with her imagination inside her head. Still, the Universe seemed to have decided from the moment the two girls sat under the blue sky on that bench that their paths shall not be divided.
Gin smiled to herself. Higuchi's chest felt warm, being held like that made her feel small, but in the best way posible. She was not afraid of failing, not afraid of what the future might throw at her. She had Higuchi, that's all that mattered.
Higuchi lifted her right hand and pointed at the stars.
"Gin, as a graduation present, i'd like you to have that star" Higuchi smiled, that was something a little girl would say. Her voice sounded serious, though.
Gin laughed, and she felt how Higuchi's heartbeat started to go faster than before. "You want me to have that star?"
Higuchi smiled to the sky and nodded, confident as always. "Mhm"
"You're being so cheesy right now" Gin smiled brightly at the girl. She felt like she was in a movie, and the thought of it made her laugh.
"Well, I dont really mind if I am" Higuchi then turned around and let go of the hug she had gin in, putting her down carefully onto the grass with her face looking towards her direction, so she could have her in front of her and look at her in the eyes. They both were lying still on the cold grass, but the presence of the other made cold a nonexistent thing.
"I dont really mind, Gin" Higuchi looked at those grey eyes that she knew hid a thousands of beautiful thoughts. Gin looked like someone born to be in the night, with the millions of sparks behind her being the only thing that could do her beauty justice. Higuchi lifted her hand from her side and carefully touched Gin's face, stroking her cheek with her thumb and sending shivers through the other girl's body. The feeling of her skin took part of her breath away.
Gin felt like she had to deeply breathe in order to gain back the air she had lost by the touch of Higuchi. She would never grow tired of that feeling. She would never grow tired of all the things Higuchi made her feel.
The cold air caressed their hair. Black and golden locks mixed in the grass below them, amber and grey eyes locked in a world that looked to only contain the two of them. The stars shining brighter that ever.
Higuchi leaned forwards, their lips touched, and Gin remembered everything. Why she had sticked around, why she had always felt safe with her, why she fell in love with her.
Higuchi really had the ability to make you feel like someone was there for you.
And Gin was grateful, very grateful. She showed it by deepening the kiss, her hand now cuping the blond girl's face. She could feel the heat that colored the girl's cheeks under her hand.
She loved her. She had since the moment they sat next to each other to look up at the blue sky, and she would after this night, where they said goodbye to all those years of immature adolescence and wild feelings.
They thought it was a nice idea to end their senior year of highschool by going stargazing. The two girls thought they could remember the moment the both of them crossed paths, the moment the infinite black sky, with million yellow lights, united them.
