Summer of '89

Summary:

This all felt very much like a date.

Notes:

HI I'M SO HAPPY BC MINGI HAS RETURNED I MISSED HIM SO MUCH!!
anyway, this is just something short that i threw together to celebrate the occasion, i hope you like it!!!
There's no particular reason this is set in the 80s but the title is a reference to Bryan Adams' song "Summer of '69"

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Mingi killed the engine, cutting off the radio as he turned in his seat to face Yeosang. The windows were rolled down, but it didn’t do much against the sweltering July heat. Yeosang didn’t much mind though. Tonight had still been great.

Yeosang glanced up the driveway at his house, but everything was dark; his parents usually went to bed by 11pm. It was nearing 1am; he should be safe.

“I had fun today,” Yeosang finally said. He kept his voice low, not wanting to alert anybody to their presence in the quiet neighborhood.

“Me too.”

They had spent all day at the beach together. Yeosang had been too shy to ask if Mingi considered it a date. Originally, they were supposed to be going with their friends, but Wooyoung had been called into work last minute and it was clear that San would much rather spend his time at the diner Wooyoung worked at than melt in the sun.

All their friends knew that Mingi and Yeosang were dancing around each other, had been since the beginning of the year, both too shy to make a move. Yeosang was aware that there was something between them, but it had never been obvious enough for him to get the courage to do something about it.

Today, however, it had been different.

Without their boisterous friends around, the atmosphere between Yeosang and Mingi had been slightly different than usual. First of all, Mingi had paid for the ice cream they had gotten on the way to the beach. That alone maybe wasn’t enough of an indicator, but then Mingi went on to offer Yeosang to put sunscreen on his back! Yeosang was pretty sure his face had the shade of a tomato by the time Mingi was done.

Lastly, Mingi had started to casually hold his hand. First, on the way back to the car, then at the burger joint they had decided to get dinner at, then during the movie at the drive-in-theater they had spontaneously decided to go to.

This all felt very much like a date.

“So…” Mingi started, scratching the back of his head sheepishly. “Sorry I kept you out so long. I know your parents can get kinda…”

Yeosang chuckled and waved off. “It’s alright, they’re probably asleep by now. Plus, it’s not like they get to have a say anymore.”

Mingi grinned at him and Yeosang blushed, averting his gaze. “In that case we should totally do this more often. I like hanging out with you… just the two of us, I mean…”

“I like it too,” Yeosang admitted.

He had been crushing on Mingi for way too long, but he was also scared. It wasn’t every day that two boys started to go out, especially not in little towns like these. He thought about his parents; how they disapproved of Wooyoung and San and constantly encouraged Yeosang to stop hanging out with them.

If only they knew…

Mingi reached for Yeosang’s hand again, effectively making him look up. “Would, um… would it be okay if I kissed you?”

Yeosang’s mouth fell open in surprise. He wouldn’t have expected Mingi to be so direct with it. He wanted to say yes, but the word wouldn’t quite come out so instead he opted for nodding, albeit a little too enthusiastically.

Mingi let out a low chuckle as he leaned closer. Yeosang’s eyes fell shut and he felt Mingi’s breath on his lips. His heartbeat picked up in speed and he hoped the hand Mingi was holding wouldn’t get too clammy.

The kiss was chaste, just a gentle touch of lips, testing the waters but Yeosang already loved the feeling of Mingi’s full lips.

When Mingi was about to pull back, Yeosang chased his lips with his own. Mingi made a surprised noise but didn’t seem opposed as he kissed Yeosang back. His free hand came to rest on Yeosang’s cheek while the other moved on to his waist.

Yeosang was aware that the street was well lit, and anyone could see them now, but he didn’t care. The world outside Mingi’s car didn’t exist at the moment.

Eventually, Yeosang pulled back, his cheeks warm. Mingi had a little grin on his face as he leaned back into his own seat. “I’ve wanted to do that for a while now…”

Yeosang smiled. “You can do it more often if you like.”

Mingi’s grin widened at his words. “You bet!”

Yeosang chuckled at his enthusiasm and threw another glance at the house. There was a small light burning in the kitchen and a figure looming by the window. He grimaced. His mother was up.

“It seems we’ve been spotted…” Yeosang hoped his mother didn’t see them kiss. He wasn’t ready to have that conversation yet. “I’d better go in. See you tomorrow?”

Mingi nodded, the smile still prominent on his face. “Tomorrow.”

Yeosang got out of the car, trying to close the door as gently as possible – his neighbors could get a little pissy about noise – before he stalked up the driveway. By the time he’d reached the front door his mother had already opened it, waiting for him with her arms crossed.

“It’s late, where were you?”

“Out, I lost track of time,” Yeosang responded, determined not to let her sour his mood.

“You may be an adult on paper, but you could at least try to follow our rules until you move out,” she hissed.

Yeosang fought the urge to roll his eyes. “Yes, mother.” He threw a glance over his shoulder and sent Mingi a small wave before his mother ushered him inside.

Once he was up in his room, ready for bed he allowed himself to let the evening replay in his mind, a wide smile blooming on his face.

Tonight had totally been a date.
