Keep your friends close and your enemies closer

Summary:

SpongeBob wasn't exactly enjoyed by a lot of people. Most, found him extremely annoying. With his excited energy and being way too happy about an after school job at the Krusty Krab, he only had gained a couple of friends since he started highschool.

Squidward, was not one of these friends. Far from it. He hated SpongeBob's guts, even though he was in his class and worked at the same job as him. But of course with his luck he sat next to SpongeBob in almost every single class. The only one he didn't was in english and math. Ironically, english happened to be the subject SpongeBob was failing and Squidward was passing with flying colors.

Can Squidward get over his grudge against SpongeBob so he can keep his rep at one of the best grades in the school? Or does he do a little more then that.

Chapter Text

SpongeBob skipped into class, and plopped down next to Squidward, which earned a groan.

"Gooood morning Squidward!"

He chirped as he took out his books. It was the beginning of the day, so he had Squidward in all of his classes until 12:55. He had always enjoyed Squidward's presence, well usually he did at least. Sometimes Squidward could be a bit much, with him always seeming to be angry at the blonde. But, usually he can handle it. The insults are really stupid sometimes anyways. Squidward sighed.

"Good morning."

He mumbled. SpongeBob almost gasped. He'd always ignored him. It always went like that. Since when did he say good morning?

"You said good morning! Finally!"

He exclaimed.

"Calm down, I just am in a good mood."

Squidward rolled his eyes. SpongeBob tilted his head.

"It's none of your business."

"Oh come on, pleaseeee?"

"Nope."

He answered.

"You're mean."

SpongeBob frowned, before the teacher started teaching and he had to drop the subject. Squidward sighed again, except it was more in relief. That was more interaction then he wanted with the boy next to him. Although his mind did tend to wander to him. An odd amount actually, but he didn't really wanna face that. Cause that's what happens when people have crushes, and he hates him. Right? I mean, the math added up. At least he thought.

"Squidward, can you answer the question on the board."

The teacher scorned, knocking him out of the strange mental rant about SpongeBob. Speaking of the boy, he giggled as the teacher rolled her eyes.

"Oh uh- 3027?"

"Correct, try to pay attention next time."

The teacher turned back to the board, and Squidward ignored what he was told and went back to his thoughts. Which ended up him questioning what he liked. He liked girls. Of course he did, I mean, they were pretty. But, he never really remembered having a crush on a girl. Almost at all, excusing a relationship from the 6th grade. Was he gay? He didn't think that either. So, what could he be? Sighing, the thought was put to the back of his mind and he finally started taking notes. Even though he didn't necessarily need them.

Finally, the bell rung and he started cleaning up. Of course, SpongeBob had dropped his stuff next to him. He contemplated just walking away, leaving him to struggle, but something told him to help him. Squidward had crouched down and picked up a book or two before handing it to him.

"Here."

He mumbled. Usually he's regret something like this but, he didn't have any feelings like that.

"Oh, thank you!"

SpongeBob smiled, taking his stuff and tossing it into his bag. Squidward just nodded and scoffed a bit before walking to his next class.

-

Squidward sat down at his usual table, with a random person or two being there occasionally, but it was almost always just how he liked it. Empty. And today was no different. Placing his tray, he dug in. The lunch was far from good, and it was kinda gross, but it wasn't the worst. Lunch was when Squidward got a break, so he didn't mind much. Apparently, it wasn't a break time today, because SpongeBob plopped down at his table right next to him.

"Hi Squidward."

This just left Squidward confused. He always sat with his friends Plankton, Patrick, and Karen. And he was always disturbingly happy. But, he seemed sad. His voice lacked the usual chirp it had.

"Hi. Why are you sitting here?"

Squidward asked bluntly.

"Oh- uh we kinda got into an argument and you're the only person who tolerates me."

SpongeBob laughed. Again, it lacked happiness.

"Oh, that sucks. Sorry."

He mumbled, feeling kinda bad for the blonde.

"It's alright. At least I still have you!"

SpongeBob said, smiling a bit. This time it homed a bit of genuineness.

"Yeah."
