Work Text:

Kara and Lena’s first dance was something unforgettable. The two has only been together for about six months, but they seemed to have moved as sonic speed if societal norms were anything to go by. They already shared I love yous and Lena had moved into Kara’s apartment with her in the past two months.

Their first dance began in their apartment, when Lena had experienced one of the worst days at work. Full of old misogynistic white men telling Lena what she could and couldn’t do. As if she wasn’t the owner and leader of the company. The two women sat on the couch that night enjoying Chinese takeout while watching whatever rom com popped up on the television.

Kara had a burst of energy to do whatever that could make Lena better. So, there they were, the beginning of their first dance. Kara super-sped the coffee table to the side of the room and stood in front of Lena, hand extended.

“Dance with me.” She said, with that bright smile of hers that only seemed to be reserved for the Luthor.

Lena responded with a nervous giggle, “I don’t dance.” She let out a sigh. “You already knew that. I’m so tired, Kar.”

The smile never wiped off Kara’s face as she didn’t give up her stance and position. “This will make you feel better baby.” Her smile grew a little wider. “Just one song, please? Then I can carry you to bed and we can go to sleep.” Kara’s face drew into a small pout when she said the please.

Eventually Lena relented, she could never resist that damn pout, how did the other Danvers do it? She took Kara’s hand to help her up.

“What song, Kar? I’ll play it on my phone.” Lena asked as she took her phone out the pocket in her sweatpants.

Kara thought for a moment before answering, “it’s called ‘This is the Sea’ by The Waterboys.”

Chords started to play throughout their apartment from Lena’s upgrade she installed into a mainframe, which automatically connected her phone. It was kind of like a surround sound system.

Kara took the lead by placing holding one of Lena’s hands in hers and her other hand going to the brunette’s waist. Then Lena, who placed her free hand on Kara’s shoulder. As the introduction finished, Kara and her ever angelic voice joined into the song, bringing pleasure to Lena’s ears and warmth to her chest.

“These things you keep

You better throw them all away

You want to turn your back

On your soulless days.”

Kara looked so deeply into Lena’s eyes that it was as if she was staring right into her soul.

“Once you were tethered

Well now you are free

Once you were tethered

Well now you are free!”

The hero spun her lover around in the living room before pausing to sway.

“That was the river.

This is the sea.”

The super and Luthor kept this quiet pace throughout the remaining several minutes of the song.

---

Here Kar and Lena were today. The millionth time that they are slow dancing, only this time it’s one of the most important times, their wedding day. People in the crowd cheered as the couple made their way onto the dance floor.

Kara was clad in a navy suit where Lena was in a matching blue dress because screw traditions. The two resumed their positions from the first time they danced like this. The piano started and Moses Sumney’s voice filled the tent from the ground up.

“Hey after all these years

I’m still here, fingers outstretched

With you imprint in my bed

A pit so big, I lay on the edge.”

Kara directed Lena into a sway as they slowly spun around, before pulling her closer by wrapping both her arms around the smaller woman’s waist, and Lena reciprocated by wrapping her arms around the Kryptonian’s neck. Lena began to play with the small, freshly shaved hairs at the base of Kara’s head, since she recently got her hair cut extremely short. The brunette leant her head on Kara’s shoulder and lightly pressed her face into her now wife’s neck.

Kara leant down to whisper in Lena’s ear, the lyrics as it got to the chorus,

“Hey me in twenty years

Does your milk still

Turn to rot too soon?

Do you still hoard souvenirs?

And make them mirrors

Of sentimental veneer.”

There they were, both Kryptonian and hero wrapped up in each other. Each was just a pang of love. A pang of hope. An eternity. Kara whispered the final verse in her wife’s ear.

“And I wonder how I’ll sleep at night

With a cavity right by my side

And nothing left to hold but pride of mine.”

She leant back to finish it off, looking into Lena’s emerald pearls.

“Is it laced within my DNA?

To be braced in endless January

Have I become the cavity I feared?

Ask me in 20 years.”

Here’s to more slow dancing in their future.
