Work Text:
Fili had been gone all day and most of the evening. You huffed to yourself, entering your shared chambers and noticing he was still busy. You weren’t angry at the fact your husband was always so busy, being next in line for the throne meant that he had a whole host of responsibilities to attend to, but it would be nice to just have a day to yourselves every once in a while.
Today, you’d only seen Fili at dinner. He’d been up and out the door before you’d even woken up. You missed him terribly but knew better than to project your sadness onto your husband. He had a lot to deal with at the moment and you wouldn’t be the one to add to that list.
Since you’d only seen him once today, you decided you’d stay up and wait for your husband. Stripping out of your constricting clothing, you shivered as the cold air of the room hit your skin. Winters in Erabor were harsh, hardly helped by the fires that burned in most rooms. The fire in your own room burned brightly but offered little warmth against the chill that was now seeping into your bones
Your nightgown was only made out of thin material and would do little against the cold. Biting your lip thoughtfully, you spotted one of Fili’s shirts folded on the back of a chair. Fili’s shirts were always thicker than your own, and normally much more comfortable. By looking at it, you’d expect the material to be scratchy but in reality it was soft and smelled like home.
You crossed the room quickly and slipped it on. Fili’s clothing was always too big for you, the shirt almost coming down to your knees. At the moment, though, you didn’t mind and the extra material helped to provide more warmth.
The comforting feeling of Fili’s shirt made you feel slightly drowsy but you did your best to shake the feeling off. You’d made a promise to yourself to stay awake and wait for him to come to bed and you were determined to keep it.
Instead of waiting on the sofa next to the fireplace, you took to pacing around your chambers, rubbing your arms in an effort to keep out the chill. Fili had been gone a long time and you hoped nothing bad had happened to keep his attentions else ware. At dinner he’d said he’d only be out for another hour or so but that must have been at least three hours ago. You knew that sometimes Fili would even sleep at his desk if things got too busy. You only hoped he’d come back at a reasonable hour tonight.
Playing with the sleeves of the shirt, you stared thoughtfully at the fire. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to spend a few minutes on the sofa where it was warmer. After all, if you caught a cold, you’d get a lecture from several dwarves, least of all Fili.
Acting almost on impulse, you took a seat on the sofa. Immediately, you felt warmer; the heat from the fire soothing your chill. You relaxed back into the sofa with a sigh. The only thing that would make you more content was if Fili was beside you.
You’d only been sitting for a few minutes when you could already feel yourself start to get drowsy. Frowning, you shook yourself awake, deliberating if you should stand up to avoid accidently falling asleep. But you shivered at the thought of moving away from the fire so decided to stay put.
That seemed to be the wrong decision as you could feel yourself getting drowsier and drowsier, head starting to lull onto your shoulder. You slumped in your seat. It was ok for you to take a little nap, right? Fili probably wouldn’t come back for about an hour or two anyway. You’d be up and awake by then.
Fili retired for the night at exactly half past one in the morning. He opened the door to your shared chambers quietly, expecting you to be in bed asleep, and started shrugging out of his heavy fur coat.
But when he noticed you, he froze. He didn’t know how long you’d been asleep for but your hair was a mess. You were lying across the sofa on your side, legs curled up as far as you could get them on the narrow sofa. He smiled to himself at the sight, guessing you’d probably been waiting for him. Fili couldn’t help but feel slightly guilty he’d left you waiting for this long.
His heart swelled when he noticed you were wearing one of his shirts. You pulled it closer around yourself in your sleep as Fili approached with a small smile on his face. He crouched down beside you, chuckling softly to himself as he tucked a strand of your unruly hair behind your ear. You shifted slightly but didn’t wake.
“My darling…” Fili murmured, hand sliding up your arm as he brought his face close to yours so your noses were touching. You hummed quietly but didn’t open your eyes, nose twitching slightly as you felt Fili’s warm breath on your face.
He pressed a soft kiss against your lips, resting his forehead against yours as he stroked up and down your arm. “You should be in bed…” He smiled, other hand coming up to stroke your hair.
“Fili?” You asked, opening your eyes a crack. Your husband smiled back at you, taking your hand in his and kissing it tenderly. “I was waiting until you got back...”
“And here I am.” You wound an arm around his neck as Fili kissed you again. “Is that my shirt?” He asked you with a chuckle.
“Mine now…” You murmured, eyes slipping closed again with a satisfied smile.
“Let’s go to bed, my love, yes?” You nodded in agreement as Fili brought an arm underneath your bent legs, the other going to support your back as he lifted you.
You burrowed your head into his chest, getting as close as you possibly could and breathed deeply. Somewhere in your sleep addled brain you felt Fili press a kiss to your hair but you were too sleepy to react.
Almost falling asleep in Fili’s arms on the short walk from the sofa to the bed, you gave a start as he lowered you onto the mattress, arms tightening around Fili’s neck.
“Shhhh, you need to let go so I can get undressed, my love…” He chuckled.
“But you’re so warm….” You gripped tighter, pressing your face further into his neck. Fili laughed quietly and sat about unwinding your arms from him so he could stand. You pouted as he moved away, pulling the covers up higher around yourself as you shivered.
Fili watched you for a moment with a smile on his face, taking in the scene before him. At this moment, nothing could make him more content.
Quickly he stripped off to just his undershirt and joined you under the thick duvet. Immediately, you snuggled closer to him, already asleep again as you searched for warmth. Fili was more than happy to provide and pulled you against his chest.
You murmured something slurred under your breath but Fili was too tired to try and decipher it. He buried his face in your hair as your own head rested on his shoulder, pulling the covers over your shoulders and skimming his fingers lightly over your back as he let sleep take him.
