Chapter Text

Dream Exdii, for the first time in their life, was bored.

The Elders were all busy, and George was asleep, and apparently would be for a while, at least according to Wilbur.

So, Dream was bored.

It was ironic, really. For the God of Order, Dream was so used to others controlling his life. Now that they all seemed to be gone, they just had nothing to do.

There were only so many times one could strum a tune on the harp or fold one's bed. Dream was bored, George was asleep, and the Elders were busy.

So, really, there was only one thing left for Dream to do.

Dream hadn't seen Technoblade in at least a century. The last they'd heard, his childhood sparring partner was down in the human world, going Elders' knew what.

It was only a matter of time before he visited him. Technoblade was a dear friend and a wonderful distraction, and Dream had always been curious about the human world. After all, these were the people they were meant to be controlling in a few centuries' time once they fully matured. How could they maintain Order if they did not know the way of man?

Perhaps Technoblade could teach them. Perhaps they could venture down to the green fields they'd only spotted from far above and have Techno teach them as they'd done many years ago. Only this time, no weapons would be gripped in delicate hands, no blade would clash as they crossed each other. Perhaps Technoblade would teach Dream how to harvest a peach. That would be nice.

With no George to talk him out of it, Dream quickly made up their mind. For as long as they'd done it, Dream never was one to keep themself occupied for long. They were halfway out the gates of the God's realm when they thought to question their decision.

The Elders would probably be mad at them for leaving.

It was only that that made Dream's step falter.

The Elders being mad was a dangerous thing. If anyone would know, it would be Dream, who was the one who spent the most time with them outside of the solstices. But the Elders had been busy for many months, and would be - again, according to Wilbur - for many more. Surely Dream had enough time to spirit down to Technoblade and make it back up in time for the next solstice. And surely the elders would forgive them for leaving, if they even noticed at all.

Thoroughly convinced, Dream continued their descent down into the overworld.

//

It was surprisingly much more difficult to find Technoblade than they thought it was me. In their ignorance, Dream had not thought to consider just how large the human world was. It had all looked so small from above.

Thankfully, after a week of wandering aimlessly and getting more than a few odd looks, Technoblade found them instead.

"Daydream?"

Dream's face soured at the name, but quickly grew more excited as he recognized the voice. He whirled around, searching desperately through the crowd of people.

"Right here, nerd."

And there was Technoblade, wearing a stupidly floofy white shirt and dark pants, carrying what looked to be a trident.

"Technoblade!" Dream shouted, hurrying to the other's side, "How'd you find me?"

"I sensed you from a mile away, princess."

Dream sniffed at the nickname. It'd been so long that they'd forgotten how annoying Techno was. Nevertheless, Dream was happy to see him. He darted behind Techno, examining the strange tool in his hand, "Why do you have a trident?"

"It's a pitchfork. Its for farming."

"...farming," Dream muttered, more to themselves than to Techno, "Are you a farmer?"

"I am. Come with me so we can get you out of those clothes and into some normal ones."

Techno turned away, heading towards a small wooden contraption attached to two animals. Horses, Dream recalled.

Dream hurried to keep up with him, shorter legs struggling to keep pace with Techno's longer strides, "Normal ones? These are normal clothes."

"Maybe in the God's Realm, but nobody here wears long, white robes in May. Honestly, I'm surprised you weren't robbed."

"I don't have any gold on me."

Techno shrugged, "The robbers don't know that."

"Oh"

"Here," Techno said, stepping into the wooden contraption and offering his hand to Dream, "Get in. It's called a carriage. Or a wagon, whichever works, really."

"Carriage," Dream whispered, familiarizing the word in their mouth.

//

The carriage ride was silent and a little bumpy. Dream spent the majority of the trip staring out their window and watch the landscape flicker by, occasionally breaking the silence to ask Techno a question.

"What are those?"

"Sunflowers," Techno answered patiently, "They're called that because they always grow facin' the sun."

"They're lovely."

"They are."

Eventually, the carriage shuddered to a stop. Techno got out first, stopping to assist Dream out of the contraption before approaching the driver and offering a small bundle of coins.

"This is where I live," Techno said, gesturing to the cottage in front of them, "Have been for the last couple years."

Dream frowned, "It's small."

"Yeah, well its home. You'll have to get used to it, princess." He kept a brisk pace as he walked down the wide path towards the front door. Technoblade held it open for Dream, "Welcome in. You never mentioned how long you were stayin' for. When do the Elders need you back?" Techno asked, pinched expression on his face.

Dream winced, "They don't actually... know." Catching sight of Techno's alarmed face, Dream quickly continued, "It'll be fine though!" he assured, "They've been really busy lately so I doubt they'll even notice I'm gone. And George went to sleep for the next century so I had no one and I was just so bored-"

"So you came to see me?" Techno asked, unimpressed.

"I missed you!"

"Dream... the last time I saw you you told me you never wanted to see me again."

The pair stood in awkward silence in the doorway. It was Dream who spoke first.

"You told me you were leaving. And then you pinned me to the wall with an arrow to stop me from chasing after you. I think I had the right to be a little mad."

"To stop you from chasin' me. Which is exactly what you're doing right now. Guess I need to work a little on my persuasion skills."

"I'm older now, Techno. I can handle the human world, you don't need to worry."

"I wasn't worried about that you idiot, I was worried about-" Technoblade stopped himself, taking a deep breath, "You know what? Nevermind. I'll go make some tea."

Converstion thoroughly derailed, Dream followed behind him. They seemed to be doing a lot of that today. It was a harsh reminder.
