Chapter 1: Stepping Stone

Chapter Text

Adelaide flicked the pages of some magazine, making mental plans for how to be more skinny, her eyes rested on the coffee mug on her desk. She intended to drink but instead snapped her hand back to the glossy pages and returned to flicking them back and forth too rapidly to read much.

"Salads... Who wants to eat salad all day, everyday?" She mumbled looking at a recipe. Her eyes find her coffee once again, reaching for it for a sip.

Addy winced as she tasted the coffee - it was tepid, overly bitter and lacking real cream. It was a source of caffeine though and she needed it.

"I'm making new coffee," Erin spoke, grabbing Addy's mug. "Quit drinking that crap."

"But I need some," Addy turned her chair towards her friend.

"You always need coffee." Erin said, turning the coffee machine on.

Addy followed her, ready for some caffeine, if she was going to make it through this day. Since waking up this morning, she had a bad feeling about today. It wasn't the first time, and she knew it wouldn't be last, as much as she hoped it would.

"That stuff will kill ya now, apparently."

Both Erin and Addy looked towards the door, as their friend and co-worker walked in.

"Saw an article online." Jay grabbed his black mug from the cabinet turning back to look towards the girls.

Addy raised her eyebrow toward her partner, "Well, that is last on the very long list of things that I'm concerned about." She mumbled.

Jay held out his mug towards Erin, "Please."

Erin rolls her eyes and pours the man coffee into his mug as Addy says, "Caitlin was asking about you."

"Oh, yeah. Tell her I say hi." Jays says, with no interest and emotion.

"So no interest on your part?" Addy says, putting sugar into her coffee when Erin left the two alone to go to her desk.

"She's super sweet, but my loss."

Addy rolled her eyes at her partner. He would never get married, just too picky.

"Hey, you guys seen Voight around?" Jin looked into the break room and asked.

Addy frowned at Jin "No, Why?" She noticed him shaking a bit. "Is everything okay?"

"Nothing." Jin says, before walking away.

Addy and Jay share a glance. Something was wrong.

"You" Addy put a finger on her partner's chest. "I am never setting you up again."

"What?" Jay grabbed her finger. "Who says I want to be set up?"

"You don't know a good thing when you see it." Shaking her hand out of Jay's grip, Addy walked towards her desk.

"Morning!" Addy looked up to see Jules coming in. Her eyes narrowed on the coffee cup in the blonde's hand.

"Time to start a new day!" Jules's partner Antonio passed her.

"You didn't bring me any coffee." Addy turned her lip out. "Jules, where's mine?"

"Tonio got me mine." Jules smirked at her. "You wouldn't like my plain coffee anyways. All you have is creamer and sugar."

"Plus, that's what partners do for each other." Antonio winked at Jules.

"Heard that, Jay?" Addy said, looking straight at her partner.

"You have your coffee." Jay pointed to the mug in her hand.

Addy rolled her eyes, meeting Jay's across the room. She used to believe his glacier eyes were ice cold, that they knew no warmth and never shared love. That's what she used to believe. Now she knew, the hottest fires always burn blue.

"All right, listen up." Hank Voight walked up the stairs with two patrol officers behind him.

Addy smiled at them knowing them from the academy. Kim and Kevin smiled back. "Got a name on those dope deaths. It's a dealer named Rev on South Emerald. As soon as Olinsky gets here, we're gonna"

"Over here" Al interrupted, leaning back in his chair, eating a banana. "Hey"

"Hey, Alvin."

"Hank."

Addy smirked at the two. They were her father figures in her life since hers did everything a father shouldn't do.

"We're gonna set up a controlled buy. Halstead and Ellis in the doorway." Hank looked straight at Addy. "Do not go inside."

"Got it." Addy nods her head looking towards Hank.

"All right, one more thing," Hank walked towards his office before turning around to his unit. "We've been doing this, what, two months? Now more than ever, we keep everything in house. Understand?" He looked each one in the eye. "I don't care how they run other departments or how you came up. This is Intelligence. My unit. You tell me the truth, so I can lie for you. And if you ever go over my head, it'll be the last head you go over." His eyes met Addy's once more. "Everybody goes home tonight."

--

Jay and Addy walked up to the white door. "Is this it?" Addy asked.

"Yup. Let's do this!" Jay smirked before slamming his fist against the door. "Rev! Open up!"

A door opening caught the two's attention as a man from next door stuck his head out. "Hey! You mind keeping it down?"

"Am I banging on your door?" Jay asked. "No? Then go back inside."

Addy watched as the man rolled his eyes and went back inside. She grabbed Jay's hand and intertwined their fingers, leaning against his shoulder. She felt his eyes on her before he went back to hit the door.

"Rev, open up!"

"I'm going out on a limb here. Rev might not be home." Antonio's voice came through their earpieces.

Addy looked back towards the car and rolled her eyes. "Thanks, Tonio." she whispered.

"Come on, man!" Jay yelled once more, before a man opened the door.

"What?" the man said.

Addy took in his shaggy brown hair. His eyes, red rimmed. Definitely, something going on.

The man scanned Jay up and down a moment before looking at Addy.

"Yeah, uh, is Rev here?" Jay asked, taking the attention off of Addy.

"No, so quit pounding on the door." The man snapped.

"Hey, man, yo, my girl she's going into rehab tomorrow." Jay glanced down to Addy as she curled herself more into him. "Wants to go out with a bang tonight. Rev usually hooks me up."

Addy backed away; he was creepy. He looked her up and down. There was something in the way he looked at her, like he's doing so much more than just taking in her form like others do.

Jay noticed the look in the man's eyes. "You ever been to rehab, man? It sucks."

The man took another look at Addy and motioned them in. "Come in."

Addy pulled Jay back. Something was going on. The man wasn't injured, yet he had blood on his pant leg. She didn't want to risk something happening. "We'll come back when Rev's here."

Jay turned to her, and started to yell. "You've been up my ass for two hours about scoring some H."

Addy glared at Jay, hoping he would get the message. "Well, I changed my mind!"

A small nod was Addy's answer as Jay looked back towards the man. "Mujeres, right?"

Jay wrapped his arm around Addy as they walked away. "What's wrong?" he whispered.

"There was blood on his pants." Addy said. "I didn't want to risk anything."

"You sure?" Jay questioned her.

Addy pushed away from him, anger building up inside her. "When have you ever questioned anything I do?"

"Ads, I didn't" Jay started but fell silent as they were close to their group.

Addy stepped up into the circle they had formed. "It looked like blood. That and the fact that we don't know that guy "

"You don't have to justify it." Hank said, "You got a bad hit, you got a bad hit." He looked around the group. "Let's go in."

"No. Cause maybe it looked like blood? That's not probable cause to force an entry." Jules said, sending Addy a look.

Addy nodded, knowing they needed more. They had to be a hundred percent sure.

"He could have been marinating a chicken and spilled barbecue sauce on his pants." Antonio spoke up.

Barbecue sauce, really Tonio? Addy shook her head at Antonio.

"We've got three O.D.s traced back to the heroin Rev's moving." Hanks stared right at Antonio, almost challenging him. "You want to wait for another kid to die?"

"We'll do a knock-and-talk, all right? Whoever's in control of the apartment gets all squirrelly, we'll take it from there. All right?" Al cuts in, to ease the tension.

"We're going. Back up, stand by." Hank spoke into his radio.

"Tucked in and ready to go, boss." The reply from Atwater.

"Barbecue sauce as a marinade? What's that? Some kind of Puerto Rican thing - or something?" Hank laughed at Antonio, pushing him a bit.

"I'm Dominican." Antonio glanced back at Hank.

"It's got too much sugar in it. It'll burn the meat." Addy joked, seeing the glare from Antonio. He went to say something, but stopped.

Gunshots come thick like winter hail. The tin projectiles cutting through the frozen air, oblivious to their purpose.

"10-1! Shots fired at the police." Antonio yelled over the radio as everyone took cover.

"10-1. 5600 Emerald. Plain clothes officers at the scene!"

Senses sharpened with adrenaline, Addy held her breath, straining to hear with every ounce of her concentration. Not quite silent. Her ears strained for more sounds, more clues as to where the gunshot had originated. Jay shared a glance with her, nodding to where they just came from.

"Get the long guns!" Hank shouted at Jay and Al.

Jay squeezed his partner's shoulder, sending her a look. They did this every time they went out on calls. It meant to be safe. It went both ways.

"Get back inside!" Al told the mother and daughter as the group made their way to the apartment. "Go back upstairs!" Al had seen a young man come down the stairs right next to them.

"All right, man." The man answered before heading back up.

Al looked at Hank, who gave him the signal to break the door.

"Police!" Antonio was the first one in. "Clear!"

Jules went in next with Addy right behind her. "Clear!"

"Body!" Addy yelled. She turned away as her stomach heaved, nostrils filled with the smell of rotting meat. The dead man sat against the bathtub, in a pool of blood that was almost dried and gave the room a sickly-sweet butchershop odor. His head in the sink with blood running down the sides of the cabinets.

Jay and the others moved in, as Addy stayed behind the group, taking in all she could with the body. It was a mess. But when wasn't it?

Jay spoke, "That's Rev in the John."

"Offender must have booked." Antonio said, turning around to Hank.

Hank grabbed his radio."Call it in." He glanced around at his team. "Clear the rest of the building. Shooter's in the wind."

A noise alerted Addy and the team. They weren't alone. Addy made her way to the door, looking at her team, before opening the door.

A small boy raised both of his hands in the air. Addy looked at Jay, before moving closer to the boy.

"Easy, we won't hurt you." Addy raised both of her hands to let him know she means no harm. "You're safe. You can come out."

The boy kept his eyes on her, and she motioned him out. He stepped out into her arms, shaking.

Addy met Hank's glaze. This boy needed to come with them.

---

The unit returned back to the station with the little boy in handcuffs, much to Addie's dismay. She felt like it was too much. The boy wasn't going anywhere with seven of them surrounding him.

"Do they have to keep the handcuffs on him?" Addie asked her partner as they got out of their car, getting their long guns from the trunk.

Jay sighed. "Yes, Ads. We do."

The two walked to the garage area where Hank was standing. He looked the boy over and tried to get him to meet his eyes, but the boy pulled away, staring down at the ground.

"Take him upstairs." Hank ordered Jules. She pushed the boy forward.

Addie and Jay joined up with Hank and Antonio, sharing a look. Jay saw the concern on Addie's face. She worried about the boy, fearing that he wouldn't talk. There was no word exchanged during the ride back. Whatever he went through was bad. Addie understood that. Having people killed in the same room as you or close to you. Those you know and loved. It scarred even the strongest of people.

"Beheading." Antonio started. "That's a signature cartel move."

"Yeah." Hank nodded to Erin as she and Antonio headed into the building. "Ellis. Put together a description of the guy who answered the door. See if you can find him in any of our databases."

Addie nodded as she walked into the garage to put her gun away, when Jin passes her. She smiled at him.

"Hey, is your transmitter alright?" Jin asked. "It cut out." He glanced at Jay.

"Uh, banged up against the wall." Jay said as he pulled out the crushed transmitter.

Jin raised his eyebrow as Jay gave him the transmitter.

Addie smirked. "Another one Jay? That's like what the fourth one you have broken?"

Jin rolled his eyes. "Try, ninth one."

"I'm sorry, Jin." Jay said handing Addie his long gun.

Hank leaned up against the caged wall and said, "Alvin, I'm gonna need a fresh face in case we have someone pose as a buyer again."

"Yeah. I'll pull someone from the academy." Alvin replied.

Jay walked over to Addie and whispered, "I owe you one."

"That's why you have back up." Addie smiled, punching his shoulder lightly. "Remember I like a double chocolate frappe with extra chocolate chips."

"With no whip cream." Jay replied before walking away.

"Yup." Addie laughed before she caught a look on Hank's and Al's face. Her smile faded. "What?" She raised an eyebrow.

"Nothing." Was all Al said before he and Hank went inside.

Addie rolled her eyes. Those two were unique. It was crazy how they would understand each other and think like each other. She wondered what the look was for. She probably would never know.

___

The approaching footsteps made Addie look up. Antonio and Jules enter back into the main room.

"Anything?" Addie asked. It had been several minutes since she had given up on finding the man from the apartment. There wasn't anything in the database at the moment.

One response she received was Jules holding up one finger as she typed something on her computer as Antonio looked over her shoulder.

Moments later, Jules printed off a photo, handing it to Jay and Addie. "Does he look familiar?"

"That's him." Addie says, looking at the picture of the guy, her and Jay talked to, then gave the photo to Antonio.

"Andrew Dias, aka Pulpo, the octopus." Anotnio says, writing the name onto the whiteboard. "He's got dual citizenship here and Colombia." He taped the mugshot under the name. "Me and Jules had him on our radar five years back, when he was working his way up from street enforcer."

"Yeah, I remember his name. Didn't he beat a double murder rap?" Voight asks.

"The two key witnesses were killed," Jules says.

"Goodness... Knows how to cover his tracks." Addie sighs from where she was leaning against Antonio's desk.

"Was he cutting off heads back then, too?" Erin questions.

"No, he learned a thing or two since he was in Colombia." Jules replied.

"Ah." Erin said, sharing a look with Addie. If he upgraded to beheading, who knows what he was going to do next.

"What type of player was he? What part of the city did he hold down?" Jay asks.

"Oh, see, that's the thing, he wasn't affiliated with any faction. Nobody knew his real script. He was just in it for the money and the blood." Antonio says as he held a folder in his hands.

"Okay, you two." Hank motioned to Jay and Antonio. "In my office."

Antonio gave Hank a confused look, while Addie sighed at Jay. She patted his shoulder before moving to her desk.

"Wonder what that's about." Erin asked.

Addie shrugged at her, "I assume because Jay almost went inside the apartment if I didn't pull him out." She knew that she was the only reason Jay pulled out. The gut feeling she had, she knew that the guy was the one they were looking for.

When Jay questioned her, it hurt. She wasn't going to lie. They had been partners for one month now in the unit, but knew each other when they both were in the army.

She always thought that trust must come before love, yet it is not so, for love and trust could arrive at the same moment. When love was given in this way, immediate, no explanations, the trust arrived too. Perhaps that was why people advised caution or called it foolish, but to her it never was.

Love was love, always a gift from the divine spirit. This love wasn't physical, it wasn't a "sin" to feel such strong affections; it wasn't an excuse to leave a relationship that has become difficult. This love was a clue to a possible new branch in a life.

This person maybe someone she will one day protect, rescue or nurture. So even though trust was so foundational to all human relationships, it didn't always first, it could come as part of a sudden package deal.

The future was always something she had worried about. She wasn't sure if it was because of her young mind and lack of wisdom, but she never gave thought to all the time that was enclosed her life into only a small speck in a timeline.

She had so much time. So much time that she let it slide through her fingers like worthless pennies. So much time that she watched it drain like water in a tub. So much time she stood as it flew across the empty horizon. And now she realized that she had so much time, and she wasted it. Now she realized that for some of the,, today might be our last tomorrow.

"Let's go for a ride."

Addie startled out of her thoughts as she found her boss standing in front of her. She raised her eyebrow.

"Let's take a ride."

Everyone looked over at Addie, silently asking what was going on. She shrugged, following Hank to the car.

--

"Hey, I got a couple of CI's I can reach out to, see if they know anything about Pulpo." Addie turned her head from her phone to look at Hank, who was driving. "Is that who we're going to see? A CI of yours?"

"Basically." Hank said, turning the corner.

Addie raised her eyebrow."What the hell does that mean? Either they are or they aren't."

Voight parked the car and smirked "I got big plans for you." He messed with Addie's hair.

"Ah!" She pushed his hand away. "Do you always have to do that?" She started to get out of the car, he stopped her. "Stay here."

Addie shut the door, turning to face Hank. "That's your big plan? For me to stay in the car?" She pointed outside. "What'd you bring me for then?"

"You cheer me up." Hank smiled, before walking away.

Addie rolled her eyes, "Sure I do." She watched him walk off.

In her eyes, Hank was her father. Her real father, if you could call him that, was a dead beat. Hank was friends with her father. When he learned that David was abusing Addie, he did everything in his power to get her out of there.

Addie became Hank's daughter he never had. And she was thankful for that. She needed a father figure, since none of her brothers were home during that time. All were off fighting for their country which Addie eventually did.

She was blessed to have Hank and even Al looking after her. Shaking her head from those dark thoughts, she caught Hank looking back at her from talking to a couple of guys. Confused about what he was doing, she wouldn't questioned though. Hank always did stuff his way. Not matter the consequences.

--

The team headed down the street to where an Eric Cooper lived. From what Hank gotten from his CI, Eric who went by Coop, worked for the Rev.

Antonio and Jay went straight for the front door as the other hung back glancing around the area keeping an eye on things. Antonio slams his fist on the door and says, "Eric Cooper open up!" He banded on the door once more. "Hey, Coop, open up!"

"Pry marks." Jay says, looking back at Hank.

"Breach." All Hank said, before everyone pulled their guns out.

Jay shot the door lock to open the door and kicked it in.

Antonio went first inside the apartment, yelling "Police!" He moved around with his gun raised "Clear!"

The others rushed in scanning the room, Jules yelled, "Clear."

Erin moved past Jules calling out. "Police." She searched another room, before coming back into the living area. "Clear."

Addie went behind Erin towards the kitchen, finding a head sitting on display. "All Clear."

The team took a few moments to look around, before turning their attention to the severed head in front of them.

"The next head I see better be Pulpo's." Hank put his gun away and started to walk out.

Jay caught Addie's eyes over Hank's shoulder. The sight of a dead body would always make her a little dizzy and nauseous. Her skin paled just a bit, before she could cause a scene, Jay pulled her away from the body.

"Just keep your head down. You'll be fine." Jay whispered as the two headed back to their car.

"It gets easier, doesn't it?" Addie asked.

"Never." A quick response as they got into the car.

--

The team made their way inside to their offices. Addie took a seat at her desk, while Jay looked over the board again.

Addie glanced towards him. He'd changed for the better since their time at the rangers. Every muscle on his torso showed from his tight shirt. His slightly tanned skin so tempting to touch; every move giving away his strength. His eyes were locked onto the board in front of him as he talked to Hank.

Addie edged closer until she could read his lips. serious like she'd seen him before. She missed the carefree Jay, but after multiple tours would change just about anyone.

His eyes met hers. Not only her cheeks, but her whole face turned red. Though her ears were hidden among the dark curls of her hair, it was obvious that they were as rosy as her face. He caught her and she knew it, but neither cared. He shook his head, a smile gracing his lips as he looked back at the board, turning his back to her. His backside was just as nice as his front though.

"You're drooling."

Addie attempted to hide her face behind her fingers as she heard Jules' voice near her ear. "I hate you." She turned to face her and Erin. Both wearing a smirk. Addie rolled her eyes and glanced back to Jay, but saw Hank moving toward the stairs where Al and some guy walked up into the area.

"Just wait here." Al told the blond, looking toward Hank. "Hey, come here."

Hank walked over to the two as Al explains who the guy was. "Adam Ruzek, this is Sergeant Voight."

"Hey, boss. Nice to meet you." Adam said, shaking Hank's hand.

"You too." Hank said, turning to Al and said, "Ruzek, huh? I know that name."

"Yeah, my dad Bob was a patrolman his whole career in the 26th."

Addie watched the three men talk, eavesdropping on the observation as well. That was the bonus for having a desk closest to the stairs.

"I pulled him out of the academy. Not his old man." Al said, sending a look to Hank. Something about the look told Addie there was more to the story.

"What, did you work with my dad?" Adam asked.

"Yeah, we were on the same, uh, softball team together," Al mumbled

Hank looked at Al, knowing that's not the truth and says, "Softball league."

Addie saw Hank smirked at the answer. She raise an eyebrow when Hank caught her looking at him. He slightly shook his head. Now, she knew there was a past between the three men.

"He designed t- shirts, if I'm not mistaken. Yep." Al replied.

"Bet you ten dollars, he just came from the academy." Erin said from her desk with the phone on her shoulder

Addie smiled at her, glancing back to see Hank walking towards them, with Al and Adam.

"If D'Anthony was right and he heard three voices in the apartment, Pulpo must've brought two hit men with him from Medellin." Antonio said, writing on the whiteboard.

"Alright, just get all this information to Lieutenant Belden in Violent Crimes." Hank glanced at Antonio. "Hey, have we gotten anything from his end?"

"Nothing." Antonio replied

"Calls between Rev and Coop yesterday, only one other number called them both." Erin came up beside Hank. "It's a pay as you go drop phone. Signal's off, but it was purchased at a cell phone store in Greektown."

"Ellis, Take Halstead with you, check it out." Hank pointed at Addie and Jay, before turning to Adam. "Hey, I want the Canaryville out of you, not the Beverly, huh?"

Addie nodded her head and the two detectives grab their coats and leave as Adam replied.

--

As Addie drove, Jay rode shotgun. Though he wasn't very happy about it.

"We've worked together a month, right?" Jay asked.

Addie nodded her head.

"I meant we have known each other for what 5, 6 years now?"

Addie didn't know where this was going. "Yes?"

"Two things. One. You driving all the time? I'm not down with that."

"Sorry." Addie smirked, glancing at her partner. "Not." She turned her attention back to the road.

"I've been on the job longer."

That was his best comeback? "I've been in this unit longer." Take that, Jay. Addie smiled. "Does it really bother you that much?"

"Okay, look, I feel like a house husband."

Addie laughed, giving her partner the puppy dog look and says, "Aww. What was the second thing?"

Jay cleared his throat, looking anywhere but at her. "What happened back at the office?"

Addie pulled over and parked the car, taking her seat belt off and sighed "I don't know what you are talking about" Honestly, she didn't know what he was asking about.

"Of course, you don't."

Addie went silent. He was talking about her staring at him, right? She liked Jay, but was worried if it went to more then how would it affect their job. Hank would transfer one of them away, and then distance relationship would suck.

Jay gave her a look as the two got out of the car. "I mean, did I have something on my face?" Jay asked, as Addie joined him on the sidewalk to get to the corner store. "If I were to ask you out, would you say yes?"

Addie looked back at her partner. "I don't want to get either one of us in trouble. You know how Hank is about dating," They walked toward the store, passing by some men working on a car.

"Ah, shake it, baby." One of the men said.

Addie rolled her eyes as she looked at the guy. She laughed as she walked by to the store they were looking for. She heard Jay make some comment to the guy, and the guy saluted him. Men. It makes her disguised when guys acted like pig. Thinking they can make ridiculous comments to any woman.

Jay first spoken up as the man lifts his head to watch them come closer to the counter. "A pay as you go phone was purchased from your store in the last 24 hours. We're looking for who bought it."

Addie handed the man a slip of paper with details.

The man checked out the date through his receipts and said, "Yeah, a Juan Garcia. Yesterday. Paid cash."

"Any other information you can provide us?" Addie asked, crossing her arms. This man knew more than he was giving them.

"No, we're not responsible for background checks." The man told her.

Addie smirked. "True, but it is a fairly common name. You know, there's not a lot we can do with that." She shared a look with Jay, before turning her attention back to the man.

"Yeah." Halstead nodded his head.

"You don't tell me how to do my job and I don't tell you how to do yours." The man says, handing Addie the paper back.

She looked down trying to hide back the smile. Jay was about to bust him. She knew this was probably going to happened the moment she walked in, she caught the eye of the man, his face paled as he saw the police badge on her hip.

"You're Glen Pearson, right? The owner of this place?" Jay leaned against the counter before taking out a piece of paper from his back pocket, unfolding it.

"That's right." Glen responded quite proud that he was the owner.

Addie hid her laugh as she knew what Jay was about to do.

"You know, it looks like there's a Glen Pearson with a deceptive practice and fraud charges for selling stolen merchandise out of Gary, Indiana." Jay responded.

"Oh?" Addie looked at her partner in fake shock. Busted.

"That's a 25,000 dollar extraditable must hold warrant." Jay looked back at the man, who knew he was in trouble.

"Ouch." Addie stared at the man, throwing a questioning glare at him. Daring him to lie once more.

"What do you think? Height, weight match. Eye color too." Jay said showing the paper to his partner.

Addie examined the photo on the paper then back at the man."Yeah. But I don't know. I hate to jump to conclusions." She smiled at the man. "You know what? I got an idea. Why don't we throw some bracelets on him, we'll take him down to the station, run his prints, and then we can be sure."

"I got a nanny cam up here. I can pull some footage. Get a picture of the guy who did it. It's the best I can do." The man interrupted Addie.

"Oh. That's wonderful." Addie smiled.

"You're too kind." Jay said, watching Glen grabbed the video for them.

It only took a moment for the video for the two detectives. They left the store, walking back to the car as Jay said. "Knew that would work."

"Mhmm." Addie hummed. "Just gotta figure out who this idiot is."

The two turn around after hearing a beer bottle breaking right close to them. They glared up at the man who spoke to them earlier.

"Why don't you bring that ass over to my place sometime, girl. I'll let you in." The jerk didn't know when to stop.

Addie scoffed as Jay handed her his gun "Let it go, Jay."

"Uh-huh" Was all he said.

"Uh-huh" Addie mocked him as he hands her his shield and walks over to the men and said. "Hey. Come here a sec."

Addie took a step closer to Jay. She knew he was trying to protect her, but she didn't need it. It was best to ignore men like this.

"Nah, you're just trying to get me with assaulting a police officer." the man says, walking closer to Jay.

"Do you see a badge on me?" Jay pointed to where his badge normally was. The man goes to punch him, but Jay grabbed the man by the neck and kicked him in the face with his knee.

The man fell to the ground holding his bleeding nose and Jay said, "Anyone else?" Looking towards the three others.

And when no one answered he helped the man up, who looked at him stunned.

Jay walked back over to Addie, a smirk on his face. Always needing to be the hero

"My hero," Addie said, giving her partner back his gun and badge back."You're still not driving."

"but you owe me a beer." Jay whined.

"I owe you nothing." Addie laughed as she got into the car.

---

"Colombian authorities ID'd this guy as Omar Rojas, freelance hitman." Jay said, as Antonio wrote underneath the mans picture.

"So Rev was the boss, Coop moved the merchandise, who's the next in the chain of command?" Hank walked around the group.

"Well, that was the problem. Rev was only in from Baton Rouge for a year. There was no structure to his crew." Jules stood next to Erin and Addie.

"And nobody's talking?" Hank asked, pointing to the board.

"Nope."Jules said as Antonio shrugged. The case was going slower than normal.

"Alright, when Olinsky gets in, you tell him." Hank said

"I'm right here," Al interrupted Hank, leaning back in his chair.

Addie smiled. The corner that held Al's desk kept him hidden from everyone. It was a nice private area, one she wished she had.

Hank looks at Al and asked, "Anything from your CI's?"

"No dice. Something about not wanting to have their heads chopped off." Al replied.

Hank sighed "Alright. Get Rojas' image out there with Pulpo's city wide, all airports, train, bus stations, and keep hitting the bushes."

Addie noticed Belden walking up the stairs, causing her to roll her eyes. The man was a prick always causing trouble for Hank as well as the whole unit.

Hank sighed, motioning Belden to follow him to his office.

As Belden walked past Addie's desk, he gave her a smirk and slight wave before following Hank into his office. Addie's eyes followed the man until Hank met hers. Concern growing in him. Addie shook her head, mouthing that she was fine, but Hank only gave her a look before shutting the door.

Addie sat down at her desk when Jay followed her.

"Are you okay?" He asked. "What was that about?"

"Belden is a good friend of my father. He disapproved of me going into the army. He thought I should stay home and take care of my father."

Jay put an arm on her shoulder. "Don't let his thoughts of what you should have done bring you down."

"Thanks, Jay." Addie smiled but faded as Jay walked away. It was hard not letting what others think of you get to you. She wanted to say she didn't let it get to her, but she would be lying. It was her battle, and her battle only.

--

Addie watched a group of people headed into Molly's. Going to a bar wasn't really her scene, but she knew most of her friends were there. She walked into the door, Atwater made her pay to come in. "Really?" He smiled at her before grabbing the cash she held out, before going inside.

Her eyes caught Erin and Jay sitting side by side. Addie held her breath behind pursed lips to steer herself from the green monster trying to escape. Erin knew she liked Jay, so she wouldn't do anything, right?

Pushing it down, Addie made her way to her co-workers. "Hey."

"Look who decide to join us." Erin laughed.

"Sorry. I was having a debate on leaving my comfy couch." Addie smiled.

"Hey." Erin caught Atwater coming towards them. "We had to pay full cover at the door."

"I'm running a business, Detective." Kevin sat down at the head of the table, next to Addie.

"Atwater is the cheapest, I mean the cheapest guy you will ever meet." Kim said. "We drove, wait for it, we drove around for a half hour yesterday looking for an ATM that wouldn't charge him a withdrawal fee."

"And there's a two-drink minimum, so start knocking 'em back." Kevin said as he left the group. "I ain't playing."

"Okay, then I want mine in that cup." Erin point to the large glass Kevin was holding.

"Next time." Was the last thing Kevin said.

Addie glanced around the room, a lot of the people where policemen and women, doctors, firefighters. Molly's was the heart of the first responders. It was where they could come and take a load off, and be normal. Though tonight seemed to be more of Kevin's friends than the main crew.

Addie caught the middle of the conversation that was going on next to her.

"You can break my balls all you want, but I learned more about crowd control and conflict resolution and intimidation tactics traits that will serve me well when you guys detail me up into Intelligence." Kim went on and on. One would say that she was a little bit tipsy. "Hint.. Hint.."

"Oh. Wow." Erin laughed.

"Okay. Noted." Jay looked disinterested to be honest.

"Thanks. How about you?" Kim asked Erin.

Guess they were talking about what they did before the academy. Addie didn't want to go down that road. She was a private person, she only told a few people what went on in her life.

"Oh, I just kicked around nothing glamorous." Erin took a sip of her beer, looking anywhere but at Kim.

Addie knew she didn't want to tell everything at few meetings. She didn't blame her, she wasn't going to either.

"You." Kim switched to Jay, noticing that Erin wasn't going to say much.

"I was in the military." Jay answered.

"Cool, what about you, Addie?" Kim turned to her.

"Same. Military." Plain and simple. That's all she would say.

"You see any action?" Kim kept asking.

"I did. Yeah" Addie flinched, hoping no one notice, but the look in Jay's eye told her different.

"Ever see anything like you did today?"Kim asked.

Addie kept her gaze on Jay. The flashback started coming back in waves.

The blood staining her hands.

Bombs bursting in the air.

Orders being yelled out in a language Addie didn't catch.

The whip leaving their mark on her back.

Kim stopped when she saw the haunt look in Addie's eyes. "I'm sorry.I- Forget I asked that. That was a stupid question."

"It's fine. I'm got- got to go." Addie got up and walked away quickly.

"Ads.. Wait!" Jay followed her.

---

Addie leaned against the wall, watching the interrogation that was happened in the room next to her. Adam did his job, acting as a drug dealer and score the unit a lead. Now, Antonio and Jules were questioning one of the drug dealers.

"I mean, this is the sweetest offer I've ever heard, right? You tell us who the Colombians are targeting next, and we won't charge you with distribution." Antonio moved in front of the guy. "What's the debate?"

"Ain't no debate." The guy said. "I just know not to trust a word that comes out of a cop's mouth." The guy was trying to be a smartypants.

"We're trying to save someone's life." Jules tried to get the man to give up.

"You all worried about my boy? Don't. He's ready. Them Colombians try to make a move on him, it'll be the last move they try and make." The man says as Jules pushed a folder in front of him.

Antonio opened up the folder, showing the man images that would scar just about anyone.

The man couldn't turn his eyes away, groaning. "Woah." He wasn't expecting that.

"They were ready too." Jules replied.

Addie walked out of the room as Jules and Antonio came out of the interrogation room.

"Good job, guys." She clapped Antonio's shoulder as she followed them back into the main room.

Dawson walked in "We're looking for a Shane Cameron. Xavier says he's been in hiding since yesterday."

"Yeah, but he has a flop house over on Addison. Might be worth checking out." Jules said

"Alright, everybody vest up." Hank ordered.

---

Jules, Erin and Addie were putting on their vests when Jules asked. "What's up Voight's ass today?"

"Who knows?" Erin said, fitting her vest on.

"You two would," Jules said. "You both have his card in your locker. How old are they, anyway?"

"Nine years." Addie said as Erin replied with thirteen.

"Wanna tell me about it?" The blonde asked, leaning against the surrounding lockers watching the two making sure that had everything ready.

Addie looked at Erin and said,"The man saved our lives. Here we are." She noticed the look Jules gave her, "Oh, you want to know more about that? It's gonna cost you a couple drinks" then she closed her locker.

"Hey, a night away from the kids and two juicy stories? Happy to buy." Jules smiled, walking away.

"That's deal. Girls' night!" Addie smiled, before following after Jules and Erin.

---

"Dawson and Willhite will go inside, see if he's home."

"Got it." Jules replied before following her partner inside the apartment building.

"I got a bad feeling about this." Addie mumbled to herself.

"What?" Jay whispered. He heard what she said, but he knew she always got a bad feeling, and most of the time she was right about it.

"Nothing. Just talking to myself." Addie replied.

"Are you okay?" Jay asked. He went after her last night but was late when he saw her car down the street. Knowing that she didn't need to be alone, he showed up to her house.

They spent the entire night talking, and Jay having to calm her down from a panic attack and then a nightmare later on. Jay was her anchor. He always brought her back down.

"I'm fine." She took a deep breath. "What the hell is he doing here?"

Her question caught the attention of the unit as they saw police cars drive up. Belden stepped out of one car, as his team follows him.

"It's okay, Lieutenant. We got it covered. I'll let you know if he's upstairs." Hank said, clearly not happy that the man was here.

"Who?" Belden asks.

"Shane Cameron. I left you a message." Hank shrugged.

"We're following up on the car." Belden said.

Addie started towards Belden. What was he talking about? "What car?"

"Plate matched to a black four door seen leaving the scene of the Coop murder yesterday." Belden said, looking toward the apartment then back to Hank. "Supposed to be parked around here."

Addie felt her stomach dropped as Belden spoke. A sickening feeling came over her as the bad news echoed in her mind. Jules. Antonio. They didn't know what was going on.

Hank narrowed his eyes at the man and said, "I never got that info."

"Yeah, must've dropped the ball on that." Belden smirked.

Voight got on his walkie and says, "Terminate. Pull back. Targets may be in the building."

A gunshot echoed through the apartment complex. Addie felt like she was about to throw up.

Antonio's voice came onto the radio. "10-1. Officer shot!"

"Adelaide!"

The call of her name went in one ear and out the other. All she was thinking about was getting to her co-workers. Her friends. Her family.

"Jules!"

Some saw a bullet hole, Addie saw the person around it. The pain in the one still living. She saw the person that loved laughter. She saw a friend, a sister and felt the grief of those whom loved her and the fracturing echo of the unit.

Blood soaked into Addie's sleeve, radiating outward. She stripped the fabric away to shove it against the bullet wound.

"You're going to be alright." She heard Antonio say.

Everything was sounded like she was in a tunnel. Addie could feel the tears streaming down her face, but she didn't care. Her sister was laying there, her eyes showing the fear she had.

"You have to be okay. You owe me a beer." Addie said, her hands shaking.

Addie saw Jules moved her gaze to her. She tried to talk, but Addie hushed her. "Keep you strength. Fight, Jules, fight." She sobbed.

Antonio and Addie tried their best on stopping the flow, but nothing was helping. Addie heard Hank come back toward them saying something, but Jules had all her attention.

"Addie, we need to get her to the ambo." Antonio pulled Addie up as the three helped get Jules to the paramedics waiting.

Addie caught a glance towards Gabby and Shay. "She's gonna be okay, right?"

"We gotta move, now." Gabby stated, as Hank and Antonio help Jules up onto the stretcher, "Mid clavicular."

"I'm coming with you, sister," Addy said, getting into the back of the ambulance with Jules and holding onto her hand.

"Start an IV," Gabby told Shay, as Gabby got into the driver's seat.

"You're gonna be okay," Addie said, trying to stay strong. "Jules, look at me." The dark brown eyes flickered open and shut, before staying shut. "Jules! No!"

---

"Why?" is all Addie could choke out, as her mind filled with utter shock. Jules was gone. Tears blurred her vision as she struggled not to completely break down. She unlocked her phone after several attempts. Taking a deep breath, before she called Hank.

"Yeah." His deep voice came through the phone.

How was she going to tell him that she was gone? Was this even real?

"Adelaide?" Hank asked, causing Addie to close her eyes. "Adelaide?"

"H-Hank." Addie cleared her throat. She let out a shaky breath. "Jules.. She didn't make it."

"Addie..." She heard him taking a deep breath. He was making sure he heard her right.

"Hank, I should have stopped her. This shouldn't have happened." She managed to say.

"I know, little one. I- I got to deal." Hank started.

"Go. He needs to pay." She whispered, looking down the hallway.

"He will."
