Work Text:
"Have you been sleeping lately?" Tsukishima titled his head back onto the side of his bed as he sat on the carpeted ground of his room.
"Yeah, kinda." Yamaguchi shrugged as he continued scrolling on his phone.
"Something up again?"
"I could be better, honestly. It's really nothing I haven't dealt with before, I should be fine."
"Wow so independent."
"Oh be quiet, Tsukki." Silence fell again, but it was normal, it was comfortable. But Tsukishima was hung up and concerned about his best friend.
"How many hours?"
"About... a bit more than 4? Maybe a bit less? It really depends." Yamaguchi couldn't sound more monotone as he casually talked about his horrible sleep schedule.
"Seriously, Tadashi-- Have you been taking naps again? Have you been eating dinner?"
"No and Yes. I've...It's nothing-- it's nothing," Another silence. Tsukishima knew that Yamaguchi liked to take his time when his emotions weren't at 100%, but he still rushed himself. He just let Yamaguchi do whatever he wanted, as long as he didn't ruin himself too much. "...I mean-- I just, don't get as much time to myself at 'reasonable' times anymore. So i make up for it late at night. I'm not that bothered by it. I feel fine in the morning."
"Schedule?"
"School, practice, go home, take a bath, then do my homework, then eat dinner, finish homework and then I study for an hour which I finish around 10 pm usually. So then I stay up til around 2 am to get in my personal alone time."
"You've been studying alot more lately, huh."
"I want to keep myself busy. Might as well do something productive, right?"
"When's the last time you've had a nap?"
"Um, December?"
"Wow, that's a new record for you."
"Oh shut up, it's only like 6 months."
"Surprising for you. Take a short nap."
"Now?"
"I'll join you if it makes you feel better."
"Go ahead." Yamaguchi sighed as he put his phone on Tsukishima's desk before turning to his side as he faced the wall. He payed no obvious attention to his friend when he felt the bed weigh down a bit as he laid down next to him, throwing a thin blanket over the both of them. They were both settled down comfortably and ten minutes had passed, but neither of them had their eyes closed. Their minds were too awake and wandering, restricting them from relaxing to the fullest. It was quiet, but both of them knew that the other was still awake. Tsukishima opened his mouth, a need to say something small built up inside him.
"You're not sleeping yet, are you?"
"Of course not. Too much to think about." Yamaguchi chuckled as he grew a soft smile.
"Oh yeah? Give me an example." Tsukishima switched to lay down on his other side. He soft placed his hand on the shorter one's.
"School, volleyball, school." Yamaguchi sarcastically answered, but it was mainly true.
"Just, remember to keep yourself in check. Especially your emotionally state, you know how you get when you're overwhelmed." Tsukishima sounded a bit monotone, but he was concerned, very concerned.
"Of course I would know how I get. I'm me. It's just that...it's hard being me, and I can't handle it a lot of the time. Why can't someone else do it? Why am I the one stuck being...me? It's confusing-- it's confusing. It's not like I hate myself, my skillset is decent, and I'm pretty good looking, but I know for a fact there's people out there who are good at this, and good at that. But I have my own this and that. Sometimes my 'this and that' doesn't seem worth much in the grand scheme of things."
"I mean, I think you're doing it pretty well. Just because you're not the best doesn't mean you're bad at it." Tsukishima brings his body closer to Yamaguchi's, waiting for a response.
"I feel like shit half the time."
"Don't worry about it now. Just sleep and we can deal with it later." He mumbles as he buries his face in the crook of Yamaguchi's neck. He could only give a simple hum as an answer.
"You awake yet?" Tsukishima lightly tapped Yamaguchi's arm as he sat up. The green haired boy hummed as he hugged the small pillow tighter as the light touch and the soft question.
"It's 8 pm, is there anything you want to do? Do you have anything you need to do?" He tapped the boy a few more times.
"There's nothing I need to do, but can you comfort me a bit more, please?" Yamaguchi buried his face into the pillow he hugged. His voice muffled, but still clear enough to understand.
"Alright then," Tsukishima wrapped his arms around his boyfriend and brought him onto his lap and fiddled with Yamaguchi's smaller fingers. "Well for one thing," His brought one of his hands up to Yamaguchi's cheek, slightly pointing one of them out to poke one of the many freckles on his face. "I'll never get tired of these."
"Oh please--" Yamaguchi scoffed politely.
"It's true! Here-- what do they remind you of?" Tsukishima brought his other hand up as he cupped Yamaguchi's face in his palms.
"Like soot and dust sometimes. Confetti on the better days. Nothing on normal days."
"Oh really? Well I think they remind me of stars. Pretty fitting, right? You being the stars to my moon?"
"Oh shut up, that's so cliché!" Yamaguchi laughed as he lightly shoved Tsukishima's arm.
"It's still cute though, right?"
"Hmmm, it's a cute concept on paper, never thought I'd actually hear you say it though."
"Well, every star is different, right? They're made of the same basic components, but different in other ways. The moon and the sun are both sources of light, just like city lights, and neon signs."
"What point are you trying to make here?" Yamaguchi smiled as he looked up at his boyfriend.
"Say everyone is a source of light. They're all just lights in the big view of the city, all beautiful together, but if you get closer to some of them, they're even more beautiful."
"I guess you're right, or something." Yamaguchi playfully pouted as he played with the blanket that still slightly covered his legs.
"Just do things you're own way and you'll still be pretty, you'll still be great your own way, darling," Tsukishima moved his hand to place a kiss on Yamaguchi's freckled cheek. "You've got your own problems and your own darkness, but that doesn't make you any less brighter, okay?"
"Yeah yeah." Yamaguchi's smile was bright and warm as he focused his eyes on both of his hands, and was caught in surprise when two bigger, and paler ones came into his line of sight.
"Did I do good?" Tsukishima laughed before peppering hundreds of kisses onto Yamaguchi's face.
"Of course you did! Of course," Yamaguchi sighed, his smile getting smaller, but the same warmth still there. "Thanks for this, Tsukki."
"You mean a lot to me, that's all. Like a beautiful night time view I saw when I was young I mean-- yeah it was you."
"Stop it with the little space and night metaphors and stuff!" Yamaguchi scolded his boyfriend light heartedly, knowing he actually loved hearing them. He loved Tsukishima. Tsukishima loved him. He was truly thankful that such a bright moon could help him shine in the darkness of the night.
