"It's almost your birthday! Are you sure you don't wanna do anything?" Yamaguchi asks from the kitchen of their shared apartment.
"I don't know what your definition of 'almost' is because my birthday isn't for another 6 months." Kageyama replies confused from the dining table.
"...Then it's your half birthday." Yamaguchi sighs as he finishes putting the dishes away and sits across from his boyfriend.
"Besides it's Hinata's birthday today, shouldn't you be focusing on that rather than mine."
"We can send him a video later, but for now..." He starts adjusting the shirt he stole from Kageyama's side of the closet, drawing the attention of the shirt's owner. "Let's just finish breakfast then we can decide what to do today."
"Okay, but just so we're clear, that swimsuit must look really cute on you." Kageyama smirks as he drinks his tea, catching a blush from Yamaguchi's star studded face.
"H-how?!"
"I can see the ruffles from under the shirt, and the thin shoulder strap really gave it away." At this point Kageyama was close to breaking a whole laugh, only letting out a mere giggle or two at his boyfriend's slight disappointment.
"Well that's a bust...I really wanted to surprise you by going to the beach today since we both have a three day weekend."
"It's not like the whole day is ruined, we can still go," Kageyama's heart was captivated as he saw the other one's face glow and his eyes gleam with joy.
After finishing their breakfast, Yamaguchi prepared all the beach essentials as he waited for Kageyama as he changed. Sooner than expected, they started to head out of their apartment into the parking garage of the complex. The boyfriends excitedly jumped into their car and started their path to a day filled with fluff and fun. After an hour or so of random pop songs and driving, they arrived at Kodanohama Beach. They parked under a tree to keep the car shaded and cool, although the shadow would just shift later, before racing to the sand, not bringing anything with them.
"Are you not gonna show off your swimsuit? I thought you were excited to show me." Kageyama pokes at Yamaguchi's side.
"Well...it's a bit less surprising now, and I kinda wanna save it for tonight."
"I-in bed...?"
"Wait what- nonono! I mean here!"
"...You want to do it here?"
"NO! Did you really think we're just gonna stay here for a few hours and leave," Everything goes still as the couple is overwhelmed with embarrassment and disappointment, one different emotion for each party. "Tobio...you're really dense, but once you realize it, you get all blushy and cute." Yamaguchi laughs as he walks towards his lover, placing his tanned hand on the side of his fair skinned face, lips just centimetres away from contact.
"Sh-shut up and commit to it." Kageyama whispered before connecting his lips with Yamaguchi's.
"YOU'RE TOO STRAIGHT FORWARD!" He attempted to hid his blushing face as he pushed Kageyama away in embarrassment.
"And you're a tease," Kageyama flicked Yamaguchi's arm in revolt as he walked back to the car to grab their supplies. "There's not a lot of people here surprisingly."
"Well Summer break for students doesn't start until next month, and this place is usually a hot spot for high schoolers."
"Wonder why we didn't go here with the team back then."
"We would've gotten kicked out or banned for being a public nuisance."
"And whose fault would that be?"
"Obviously yours and Hinata's, and maybe Tanaka and Nishinoya-senpai's too."
"Fuck you."
"I'm just telling the truth," Yamaguchi said in a playful tone as he walked back to the sand with towels and sunscreen in one arm, and the umbrella in the other. Kageyama scrambled to get the rest of the things from the car before running to catch up. After five or so minutes and setting up their spot they sat on the towel to take a break, as if they weren't on one already. "What should we do first?"
"I dunno, this was your surprise after all."
"I'm just trying to spoil you...without spending too much money, and with something that has nothing to do with volleyball."
"It's still early so we might as well swim before it gets too dark." Kageyama took off the t-shirt he had on and threw it onto the towel that laid on the sand. He snatched the bottle of sunscreen that was close to his feet, before sloppily applying it onto his torso, arms, face, and legs. He started to walk, almost run, towards the water, but a warm grip on his ankle stopped him. He looked down behind him to see Yamaguchi, sitting criss-crossed, leaning forward as he held Kageyama still.
"Idiot, you didn't put the sunscreen on properly."
"I think I did just fine." Kageyama clicked as he sat down from where he stood.
"L-let me...get your back. I don't want you to get sunburned." Yamaguchi mumbled as he grabbed the bottle near him. Kageyama just shrugged as he scooted himself closer towards the other. Yamaguchi was hesitant as his covered hands got closer and closer to his lover's back. His heart pounded loudly that it was the only thing he could hear, blocking out the sounds of the waves and what-not that surrounded him. He couldn't even tell if he was breathing correctly. Once both of his hands made contact, he kept them still in the same spot, but they were trembling.
"Are you gonna start moving your hands, or should I help you with it?"
"I GOT IT-- DON'T WORRY!" Yamaguchi nervously laughed as his hands moved at a rapid speed. He spread the sunscreen out thin until it wasn't visible anymore, then stopped to lay his head against Kageyama's back.
"You don't have to be embarrassed about things like this, especially around me." Kageyama reached behind him as he blindly searched for Yamaguchi's hand. The green haired boy noticed the sign and softly laid his hand on top of the bigger one that stayed next to him.
"Lemme finish this first before I hold your hand, okay?" Yamaguchi ruffled the black hair in front of him before continuing the small chore. He focused on the land surrounding him, mostly just washed up seaweed and a few crabs, but a pile of branches near a wall that separated high grassland from the sand caught his attention the most. He started to mindlessly move his hands as he had a small idea that he kept mentally building up on.
"Can I start swimming now?" Kageyama mumbled as he started to grow impatient.
"Uhmmm, not yet," Yamaguchi quickly snapped out of his daze. "bECAUSE I'M GOING IN FIRST!" A laugh left his mouth as he left his shirt and shorts on their towel, leaving himself in his "surprise" swimsuit and ran towards the ocean.
"NOT FAIR-- GET BACK HERE!!" Kageyama got up and followed behind with a wide smile on his face. They played in the water as if they were children with no care in the world. Splashing the saltwater as eachother, racing from one point to the other, seeing how long they can stay underwater, a true lover's paradise. The sun started to set, and the seawater glistened in yellow and orange, with the white shining back at them. They acknowledged the dusk quickly approaching them so they got out of the water, the excess drops left along with the natural light made it look like the two of them were surrounded in sparkles. By the time they dried off, the sun had already set, but the moonlight and the orchestra of stars was all they needed.
"Having fun?" Yamaguchi laughed as he picked up a single tote bag.
"Of course I am. This is one of your best ideas. Thanks for the surprise." Kageyama leaned in to give Yamaguchi a peck on the cheek as a small present.
"Actually, I have one more thing I want to do before we leave." Yamaguchi got up and held Kageyama's wrist as he led him towards the pile of branches he had seen prior to them swimming.
"What's in the bag?" Kageyama tried to reach into said bag, but Yamaguchi stopped at his destination before Kageyama could.
"I was thinking of making some little, I don't know, fort? Shelter structure thing? Before we leave just for fun, of course." Yamaguchi dug one of his feet in the sand in nervously.
"How many hours do we have until 11 pm?" Kageyama asked, Yamaguchi pulling his phone out of the bag as soon as he heard the word 'hours'.
"It's 9:07. What time do we do leave?"
"We can get this done in less than 10 if we start now, we can leave at 11:15," Yamaguchi's eyes lit up, and with the additional moonlight, his eyes looked like a galaxy. Kageyama quickly picked up one of the sturdier branches of the bunch before standing it against the wall. "Let's hurry up with this, okay?"
"Y-Yeah!" Yamaguchi quickly ran over to help his lover.
Once they had finished, Yamaguchi spread out led light bulbs on the branches that acted as a foundation of a roof, placed a speaker onto a small towel, and danced the night away with his boyfriend until it was time for them to leave. They had lost track of time when the clock had hit past 11:30, so they didn't bother to take the sticks down before they grabbed the lights and speaker as they ran back to the car. Once everyone and everything was situated in it's place, Kageyama set off for the drive back home, glancing at his partner sleeping every chance he could get. He silently wished for another day like this to come up in their lives once more.
