Love Foolish ~KageHina~ Fluff (Slight Angst)

Work Text:

(First years as Second Years)

Kageyama's POV:

Recently during practice I've been avoiding Hinata. My reason? I feel weird around him, something I've never felt before. All I know is that his name is coming to my mind and out of my mouth more often. A thousand, maybe a million times a day, and he's caught on to it too. I didn't realize it at first, but when I did, I realized I hated it. But I loved it? I just sorta let it stick with me at first.

"You've been spacing out more often. Need my help as usual?" Hinata's voice is so calming and angeli- wait what am I thinking? Gotta think fast. How the hell do I respond to people again, ah shit uhm-

"No." I panicked like an idiot.

"Aaah, is that so?" God his voice is pissing me off, wait why am I thinking differently all of a sudden? Because I caught myself thinking weird shit? Probably. Oh well it doesn't matter, now hurry up and say something back.

"Yeah, now shut up and leave me alone." I'M AN IDIOT. I MEAN- I ALREADY KNEW THAT? BUT GOD DAMMIT TOBIO, GET YOUR MIND STRAIGHT.

"I'm not going anywhere. You're probably gonna trip on yourself and I'm gonna have to catch you." The way he laughed at his own joke...was...soothing? Nonono, get a hold of yourself. Just focus on practice and go home, that's all you have to do.

"Ah! Kageyama-kun!" Perfect timing. Thank God for Yachi.

"Yeah? What's up?" My eyes follow Hinata as he gets up the same time as me, but leaves.

"I was just thinking about our next practice match with Seijoh. I was wondering if we should try changing the lineup- only if that's okay with you guys. I mean- I haven't asked Ennoshita-san and I wanted to hear your's and Yamaguchi-kun's opinions since next year you'll probably be taking over as captains, but-"

"Sounds good. I'll ask Coach first to see if he's okay with it."

"Ah! Thank you, Kageyama-kun!"

"Don't worry so much about next year when this year just started. We have plenty of time to switch things up with this team. And you don't need to be so formal anymore, Yachi."

"Oh, okay Kageyama-ku...Kageyama." As she left my sight I wondered why I replied to her with such ease. Maybe because we talked about volleyball? I mean- it's the only thing I'm really good at, so I would naturally be comfortable about it. I should probably just shrug it off. Anyways back to Hinata- wait why am I thinking about him so much. I shouldn't waste the little to no brain power on him, unless it's him playing volleyball. But that's really all he does. He fucks around everything else well...I guess he's good at talking to people too. It's cool to see him talk to so many people then all of a sudden they become one of his allies. The way to just...captivates people in a certain w- whaaaat am I thinking? I can't deny the facts, but it's just weird for me to be thinking about him so much. So many little details I never noticed last year or over the Summer. How the hell have I not noticed them before? All the little things he does, they're so prominent, so vibrant, so out there, so-

"Kageyama, are you okay? Looks like you're gonna hurt yourself if you keep thinking about whatever you're thinking about." Ah, it's just Yamaguchi.

"Yeah I'm fine..." My face started to heat up despite me sitting down and taking a break.

"You've been blushing a lot more lately though. Something on your mind?"

"Not really."

"Want me to reply as a friend or as your future captain."

"I prefer talking to you as a friend, Yamaguchi."

"Well in that case, stop thinking about your crush. You're too obvious."

"I WASN'T THINKING ABOUT HINATA AT ALL I WAS JUST-"

"I never said who your crush was..."

"Cheeky bastard."

Third Person POV (because i can't write first person for my life)

Kageyama scoffed at Yamaguchi as he got up to continue practicing, before his friend's voice stopped him again.

"Are you planning to confess anytime soon?"

"Never." He started walking again, trying to avoid any further conversation.

"But you like him."

"No, I hate him."

"But you love him, actually, let me rephrase that.  You're in love with him," Kageyama stopped again to think. Since walking and thinking were two things he couldn't do at once. He recalls everything he can, from the match in middle school up to today. Hinata's always had the same effect on Kageyama. Why was it just now it felt like he felt different, when nothing about his feelings had changed. "Considering how you acted last year too, you've been in love with him since the start. Never realized it though. All the times you guys have said you're invincible together, that sounds like something two lovebirds would say to each other if I know anything. But I don't know anything, obviously, since you're not in love with him."

"Wait maybe..."

"I mean you said you aren't, so I'm trusting your words." Yamaguchi shrugs at his words before walking away.

"Yamaguchi I-" I think...I'm totally in love with Hinata.

Kageyama continued his day with his mind wrapped around the fact he fell for his best friend, his volleyball partner, his knight in shining armor, Hinata Shoyo. And he knew he fell hard. Everyone knew he was out of his head for the day, watching as he took a few spikes to the face during scrimmage. He was benched of course, letting the new first year setter get used to playing with the team.

"This is a familiar sight." Hinata snickered at the younger second year as he sat down next to him.

"Shut up, you're sitting here too." Kageyama scooted away, too nervous to even look at him.

"Well that's because I'm out of the rotation. At least I didn't get benched, dumbass," Hinata retorted as well as giving Kageyama an elbow to the waist. The whistle blew and Nishinoya stood at the edge of the court waiting to switch out with Hinata. "Looks like you're staying on the bench." Hinata teased as he got up from the floor.

"Shut up before I hit you with the ball again." Kageyama looked down at his hands as he responded.

"I should be saying that to you," Hinata let out a cute little laugh. "Don't get in trouble again. Hurry up and get yourself back together so we can play together, okay?" Hinata winked at Kageyama before heading back to the court, stealing Kageyama's fast beating heart as he ran to the front row. He screamed into his towel as the game continued on.

"I WAS SO AWESOME OUT THERE! NISHINOYA-SENPAI'S TOSSES ARE GETTING REALLY GOOD! WHEN HE JUMPS OVER THE LINE IT'S MAKES HIM LOOK SO COOL AND AWESOME!" Hinata shouted as the new second years walked down the street together.

"Shut up before you wake up everyone living near the mountains." Tsukishima's scoffed.

"Oh please, you're guys's relationship is waaaaaaaaay  louder than me. If we could get electricity from romance, you guys could supply all of Japan." Hinata teased Tsukishima and  Yamaguchi as they held hands. As their conversation continued, Kageyama mind and eyes were focused on Hinata and Hinata only. Not even on what he was saying, but everything they did together in the past year or so. The way he captivated his heart like turning on a light in a dark room. The way he-

"Kageyama? You're spacing out...again. Is someone on your mind?" Yachi asked as she fell back from the other three to talk to the younger second year.

"No, I'm not thinking about Hinata." Kageyama grumbled back.

"You're...thinking about Hinata?"

"I just said I wasn't!"

"Kageyama...you're really gullible...I never said who..."

"Ooh who are we talking about?" Hinata asked as the remaining three stopped to wait for Yachi and Kageyama.

"N-no one really!" Yachi lied as she nervously waved her hands, more panicked than Kageyama despite the conversation of his crush.

"Probably talking about Kageyama's massive crush on you." Tsukishima laughed as he looked at Hinata. Yachi and Yamaguchi exchanged worried glances at each other as Kageyama looked at Tsukishima like a deer in the headlights. Hinata shrugged as he continued walking.

"Oh well, can't be helped, right?" He received no response, but he didn't need one. After that, the volume of the group got progressively louder, mainly due to Kageyama and Tsukishima screaming at each other with Yamaguchi and Yachi's verbal attempts to hold them back. Through all the chaos, Hinata stayed quiet. No one knowing what could've been going on through Hinata's head. The only thing that was going through his head however, was Kageyama.

The next day was surprisingly normal, ignoring the fact Kageyama and Tsukishima were bickering like they time traveled back to their first year, which wasn't that long ago, but they made considerable progress as friends during the last few months or so. Every now and then Yamaguchi and Tsukishima would exchange glances as if they were talking. Whenever those "interactions" would happen, Tsukishima would stop teasing Kageyama, the eye contact signaling the taller friend to stop causing a ruckus. This continued up until clean-up, the insults getting louder and worse since the day was over. Hinata watched everything happen from afar, taking in every word they said, every time they threatened each other. Paying attention to every single detail as if it were a volleyball game. He was tired of their arguing, and so was everyone else. Feeling a pinch of guilt, Hinata grabbed Kageyama's wrist mid-argument before trapping him against the wall, a smirk across his face. Kageyama felt his face heat up, shocked at Hinata's choice to take some initiative.

"O-oi...What..." His eyes traveled away from the orange boy surrounding him to the remaining club members leaving the gym, Tsukishima silently teasing them as Yamaguchi pushed him out the door. Once everyone was gone he turned his eyes back to Hinata who stayed silent the entire time, confusing the trapped boy. "You're just gonna keep me against this wall until you pass out?" Kageyama stood still, not bothering to move the smaller and weaker boy in front of him. Out of nowhere Hinata puts his forehead against Kageyama's chest.

"You're not gonna do anything about this?" Hinata mumbled, his eyes gently closed, the atmosphere around still and silent.

"I don't hate it..." After a minute or so of pure calm, Hinata lifted his head. His warm, brown golden eyes meeting the other's cold, icy ones. His small hand gently finding it's way under Kageyama's chin, leading their faces closer and closer. Hinata smirked as he quickly turned away. Kageyama stared shocked at the small figure as he walked farther away from him. "WH-WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! STU-STUPID! I HATE YOU SO MUCH!" Kageyama yelled, his face flushed in red as Hinata laughed back before turning around.

"Keep expecting that for the rest of the week!" And if you can't take it, then I won't let you be my boyfriend!"

"Is that a challenge?" Kageyama scoffed back.

"Maaaaaaybe."

"Alright then, if I don't break down or yell at you for the rest of the three school days this week, you have to accept my confession at the end of the week, okay?"

"Challenge accepted. Well it's really only a challenge for you. This'll be way too easy for me," Hinata pranced back to the position he was in just a few seconds ago, trapping Kageyama once again. "You can always back out if you want, Ka-ge-ya-ma-kun~" He gently whispered each syllable of the name into Kageyama's ear.

"I fucking hate you so much." Kageyama hid the bottom half of his face with his fist.

"Looking forward to it~"

Day 1 (Wednesday)

"What are they doing?" Tsukishima asked as he looked over at Hinata getting a bit too comfortable with Kageyama.

"They challenged each other to something, and if Kageyama loses, Hinata won't accept his confession." Yamaguchi said as he walked farther away from the scene.

"You know damn well they're gonna end up together either way."

For the rest of practice, Hinata blew kisses, threw winks, and did small little gestures whenever he knew Kageyama focused on him, which was almost the entire time. Kageyama's was completely red for the entire time, with the added physical activity. During breaks, Hinata would get a bit touchy with Kageyama. Specifically with his hands, neck, and face. His fingers would show up on his body during random times of the day, keeping Kageyama on his toes the entire time.

"Awhh c'mon Kageyama-kuuuuuun, give me just a bit of a reaction." Hinata pouted as he continuously poked the middle of Kageyama's cheek.

"You've been getting closer with Kageyama today, Hinata." Yachi walks up to the two messes, handing each of them a water bottle and a towel.

"I'm just trying to put him in his place. Isn't that right, Tobio-kun?" Hinata's half-lidded eyes try to meet Kageyama's again, but the dark-haired boy turns his focus to the opposite direction.

"T-TOBIO-KUN?!" Yachi's face is quickly painted with a tint of red. Even after the shout of shock, Hinata and Kageyama's focus stayed on each other, leaving Yachi frozen and confused.

Time flew by quicker than Hinata expected, bursting his bubble as the group walked out of the clubroom. As the five second years walked toward the gym, an idea came to Hinata's head.

"Tobio-kuun~ Let me bike you home!" He sung as he grabbed Kageyama's wrist and dragged him to the bike rack.

"D-don't call me that. You sound like a girl...or Oikawa-san," He muttered as they continued walking. Once they had arrived to pick up Hinata's bike, Kageyama noticed it's condition. It was sun damaged and covered in dirt. Just another small trait Kageyama knew about Hinata, that he wasn't the best at taking care of his belongings. "Your bike looks like shit."

"Well, I've had this since my first year of middle school, and I don't really know how to take proper care of it. I never had someone to teach me, maaaaaybe you can," His closed the space between them, lips centimetres away from contact. "Well, let's go now, don't want to be locked on campus now do we?" Hinata waved as he turned around and hopped onto his bike.

"Is this gonna be big enough to fit me?" Kageyama asked before getting on.

"I don't take up a lotta space, it's fine."

"Are you even gonna be able to pedal with me on?"

"Do you want a free ride home from me or not?"

"Sh-shut up I'm getting on."

Day 2 (Thursday)

"They're still at it?" Yachi asked her two other grademates.

"Yeah...dammit why can't they just ask each other out already? It doesn't take a three day challenge to start dating." Yamaguchi complained.

"Nah don't encourage them. One, because they won't listen, and two because I wanna see where this goes." Tsukishima smirked a bit as he leaned onto the wall. The three of them observed the other two from afar, then laughed in amusement as Ennoshita scolded them for messing around during practice. Another day passed, less eventful than the last. (AN: I UNINTENTIONALLY MADE THAT RHYME HOLY HELL) Kageyama went home alone that day, making sure to leave Hinata behind in the clubroom.

Final Day (Friday)

Kageyama woke up before his alarm to a text sent around 4 AM or so.

'Just one more day, you can do this, Tobio.' He thought to himself before grabbing his phone off the nightstand.

From: Hinata

you awake??? I wanna walk to morning practice with you┗(^0^) ┛

From: Kageyama

I'm awake now since you texted me before 5 am

Incoming Call: Hinata

'The fuck?' Kageyama clicked his tongue before answering the call.

"Morning! Did you sleep well?" Hinata's voice was loud and hyper for it being 4 am.

"I would've, if you didn't wake me up at 4 am." On the contrary, Kageyama's voice was still hoarse and quiet.

"Hmmm...well it's nice to get up nice and early, right? Especially for today~"

"Shut up. If I can take two days without yelling at you, I can take another."

"I love that confidence you have, Tobio. Now hurry up, I'm outside your house."

"WHAT?" Kageyama sat up fully alarmed, his shouting probably heard by Hinata from both the phone and through the house walls. He quickly threw his blanket off of his legs, the fabric lightly hitting the wall as he ran off. He sped up his shower, only washing for 5 minutes instead of ten, drying and fixing his hair as he brushed his teeth, and finally changing as fast as he could, not worrying about breakfast. He slammed his door open as Hinata sat on his bike, waving at him.

"That was fast," Hinata giggled as they started slowly walking to school. "You could've taken your time, it's only 4:13."

"I didn't want to keep you waiting."

"Awh~ So considerate~ You didn't even eat breakfast."

"I can grab something from the store."

"All the stores are still closed, dumbass. We have time, I'll cook you something. My house is close by."

"A-are you sure? We won't have time."

"It's literally still 4 am."

"I can't go to your house."

"Nervous much~"

"Not at all. I just...wanna get this day over with."

"You still deal with me for a majority of the day, a couple of hours won't hurt you."

"Well...You're cooking might be horrible."

"Who do you think makes my lunch everyday? The lunch you sneak bites of everyday."

"I only eat it cause I'm hungry."

"Yeahyeahyeah you love my cooking, I know," Hinata grins as they take the path to Hinata's house, sparking casual conversation about volleyball and school.

"I'm home," Hinata whisper shouts as he opens the door, not wanting to alarm his mom and sister. "Leave your shoes and bag there and wait at the table." Hinata says as he leads Kageyama to the main family room. Kageyama checks the clock on the stove, 4:27 am. They have over an hour before school starts, but the need to leave still stays with him.

"I...I just remembered...I had to get something from the store quickly before school for my sister."

As we know, Kageyama isn't the best at excuses, or lying, or thinking, but he tries to lie anyways.

"We can go after breakfast." Hinata responds stiffly, not taking his eyes away from his current task.

"I don't need breakfast. Thanks though." Kageyama quietly gets up from the table.

"Why do you keep trying to leave?" Hinata tenses up as he keeps his head down.

"Hinata..."

"Y'know what? It's really fine, leave if you want I can't force you to stay."

"Well now you're making me feel guilty. I'll stay."

"...You're a terrible liar." Hinata can't keep the tears back and they start to fall down onto his jacket sleeves. They're backs are faced towards each other, but they're so far away from each other despite basically being in the same room. Kageyama is looking around the space in front of him, and Hinata seems like he's focusing on the food, when his mind is absent.

"The food's burning," Kageyama calmly says, his eyes not even towards the kitchen. All Hinata could do is snap out of his trance and turn off the stove. The room gets quiet as Hinata goes to turn on a fan and open a window. He goes back to the stove to throw the food away, then turns the sink on to cold to cool down the pan. After ten seconds of rinsing it, he leaves it in the sink and sits down across from Kageyama. The silence between them stinging the atmosphere around them. "I'm sorry for lying."

"No, it's not your fault. I get it, I've been...overwhelming this week." Hinata tenses up again as he fiddles with his thumbs. His head stays down and focused on his hands as he struggles to find more words.

"It was a bet. Don't worry...We can call it off. You don't have to force yourself to keep...teasing me."

"But it was fun! I liked seeing you flustered, the way you had to hold yourself back, it was really funny! It was...really cute. I never got to see you like that, I had fun. So, call it off. I don't want to ruin my chances with you over some bet."

"Who said I was gonna lose though? I still haven't blown up at you," Hinata's mind clears up with that sentence. He turns his head just enough to see Kageyama at the corner of his eye. He can see his icy blue eyes staring at him. He doesn't know how or why, but Hinata started to move to the other chair closest to the other boy. It's like he was being dragged closer and closer to him the more he was being looked at. Soon enough, they sat next to each other, no space between them. Hinata gently tilted his head to rest on Kageyama's arm, since he wasn't tall enough to reach his shoulder. He wrapped his arm around Kageyama's pulling it close to his body as he gently massaged tiny circles with his thumb. No words needed to be said and no one detested. They sat together in silence until the clock reached 5 am. "Let's head to school, okay?" Kageyama said as he slowly got up from the seat and looked down on Hinata. All Hinata could do was nod as the both of them walked out the door and to school again. The walk to the clubroom was entirely quiet, with the same thought going through their heads. They want the day to end. Both of them knew it was useless since they would just end up together anyways, but both are too prideful to call off the bet. Once they got to the building, they went to their separate homerooms as the day went on as slow as possible. They decided to not meet up at lunch that day, both of them too embarrassed of what took place at Hinata's house. It's not like what they did was wrong, it's just that they were ashamed of their words. They didn't know what to say to each other, and they both hoped that it would turn normal by the end of practice.

The sound of the last bell rang and they sprinted out of their classrooms as fast as they could, running into each other as the first ones at the clubroom as usual. They just nodded at each other with simple 'hi's traded between them before changing and heading into the gym. They just started practicing small volleys in the corner of the gym as they waited for their under and upperclassmen to arrive. Practice went on smoothly, if you can call playing together during a scrimmage silently as a smooth practice. Everyone around them knew something happened, but didn't bother to ask, they never do. Because if there's one thing the whole team knows about Kageyama and Hinata, is that their fights will never last long. The longest they can go without talking is about 2 weeks, but they're both miserable in that time period. It's come to a point where they bet on how long their grudges will hold out for. But this time, it wasn't a grudge. It was a mix of nervousness, regret, and uncertainty. They couldn't find the right words to say, and they didn't want to act like nothing happened. They prayed for practice to end, and they prayed for the bet to be over with. The tension grew and grew with each passing minute, the rest of the team grew anxious since the two of them were impossible to read. Sure it was easy to tell when they were fighting and all, but you never knew when they could blow up at each other. Even if they knew it was gonna happen at one point, it always caught everyone off guard. Everyone else tried to keep it normal during practice as well, but were all on edge, waiting for the two boys to talk to each other. But it seemed like all the preparation and tension that everyone had been building up for the past few hours were for nothing. Practice ended and they didn't say a single word. Yachi tried once to get Hinata to talk, but was too scared to ask again after Hinata reassured her that they were fine. After everyone cleaned the gym, changed, and started walking home, Kageyama and Hinata stayed farther back away from the group. They walked beside each other again, with no space between them just like before. Hinata hugged Kageyama's arm close to his body once more, massaging more circles onto his arm with his thumbs.

"Y'know what's weird," Hinata looked down at his feet as they continued walking. Kageyama just responded with a simple hum. "Whenever we get into a fight, I always...fall a bit more for you--SORRY SORRY IT PROBABLY SOUNDS FOOLISH AND CRINGY BUT I COULDN'T FIND ANOTHER WAY TO SAY IT!" A blush spreads across Hinata's face as he squeezes Kageyama's arm a bit tighter, which brings a quiet laugh out of the other boy.

"Sorry, sorry-- so what I'm getting is that, You love me when you start to hate me, right?" Kageyama makes eye contact with a beet red Hinata beside him.

"Y-yeah...I guess so." Hinata turns his eyes back towards the ground again.

"Well, the day is over. So looks like I won the bet."

"Yeah..."

"What? You're too nervous to say anything else besides 'yeah'? Did I fluster you too much~"

"ST-STOP!" Hinata pushes Kageyama away in embarrassment.

"My my, how the tables turn so quickly. All because I won a bet," Kageyama reaches his arm out before quickly grabbing Hinata's hand, embracing it with his own before pulling him back in closer. "What were you gonna do if I lost?"

"I probably would've been the one to confess, or I would've teased the living hell out of you." Hinata laughed before poking Kageyama's cheek with his free hand.

"You're stupid."

"What can I say? The bet was pretty foolish after all."
