Chapter Text
It was a stressful week, for sure.
It was Whitty's final week, he was spending his last night with Carol, his girlfriend, on a date night.
But before he finally escaped, Carol stopped him.
"I'm going with you too!" is what he remembers her saying so vividly. The genuine emotion in her voice, in her eyes, Whitty could tell she meant it.
He felt bad, deep down, he really did. After their night together, Whitty knew he would miss the best moments he had.
So, after some thought, he agreed.
And that's where they were today.
Carol, Sunday, and Whitty. All together. In a completely new city. They only had each other. At least they would be safe where they were, knowing there was no one out for them in the city, at least not for a while.
They had all just moved in, finished unpacking most of their stuff, but it was mostly done by Carol and Whitty. Sunday took a long nap the whole time, coincidentally.
It was only now that Whitty finally caught a break. After unpacking most of the important stuff and getting it all set up, he was finally able to sit down and relax. It was stupidly hot at this time of day, and getting things set up was extra difficult. Now that he could relax, he decided taking off his shirt would make life a lot easier, and a lot cooler.
Fortunately or unfortunately for him, Carol walked in on him laying exhausted on the floor completely shirtless and burnt out. "It's hot, isn't it?" She said, sheepishly smirking at his completely exhausted state. "You okay down there, Whit?"
He was surprised to see Carol so suddenly, after he had just caught a break, and to see him shirtless of all things. He was shyer than usual, since he was used to being so coddled up in a hoodie. Then again, it was his girlfriend, it wasn't so bad..
"Ah, yeah, it's.. hot. Too hot. I wish there was a way to get rid of it." He murmured, rolling to his side and curling up.
"Y'know, I think there's actually a built in AC in here!" She quipped, searching for something on the wall. Whitty watched with a puzzled look. "AC?" he questioned, "What's that?"
Carol turned her head to face her boyfriend, dumbfounded at his question. "You mean you don't know what an AC is?" She smiled at him, receiving a confused and irritated look in return. "I don't really know much, considering I've been on the run nearly my whole life." He rolled onto his back, hoping to cool off more. The open window wasn't doing much justice for him.
"That's fair, I've got a lot to teach you then!" She grinned, spotting the thermostat on the wall. As she adjusted the temperature to be much cooler, she explained, "So an Air Conditioner, or AC for short, is a little machine that helps either keep the room warm or cold, like controlling the weather of your room at will!" She turned the AC on and the whirring noise startled Whitty, causing him to sit up in a more alert position. "Hey hey, don't be scared, silly, it's just a fan." She giggled. "A fan? Like those things you use to blow in your face to make your face colder?" He leaned onto the wall hesitantly. "Yeah, but instead of in your face, it keeps the room colder. If you look at this little dial right here, turning it will make it hotter or colder. Turn it left, and it'll get colder, turn it right, and it'll get hotter, simple as that!"
Whitty's eyes widened with interest. "That's.. so cool, how is that possible?" He looked up at the air conditioner, "It's like.. a magical box.. with the weather inside of it.." His eyes gleamed as he stood up to put his hands near the fan, which was much colder than the rest of the room, and he gasped quietly. He put his face up to it, and it felt like heaven to him.
Carol giggled at his fascination with the air conditioner. "When it gets to be too cold, you should turn it back up a little, just so it's not freezing." "But I like cold..." Whitty mumbled. "Right now you do, but later when it gets colder, you'll wanna turn it back up. For now though, enjoy your new discovery, silly!" She walked out carrying a box that she originally came to pick up, leaving Whitty to his newfound heaven. "The weather can be whatever I want..." He sighed.
