Work Text:
Tsu should have been able to save him, her quirk should have allowed her to save him. Instead, she watched standing on the dock watching unable to jump in and help, due to the cold. Standing and watching one of her friends and classmates fight helplessly in the water was something she would never forget, never forgive herself for. She hadn’t known the bird student couldn’t swim, hadn’t known that Dark Shadow was out of commission due to being exhausted from fighting their captors. When they crashed down into the water she was supposed to be watching over she tried to jump in the water only to be affected by the cold almost immediately and knew she had to get out in order to save herself, as much as she hated herself for that discussion she knew that Tokoyami and Dark Shadow would understand.
Water splashed and splashed as they fought for their life. Tokoyami had never learned to swim, their mother had never allowed it, plus they didn’t like to get their feathers completely wet, though to be honest, that was an excuse they used to now break their mothers' rules and save themself from the inevitable punishment that would come if their mother found out they knew how to swim. Life had never been pleasant for them but they didn’t want to go out like this. When they landed in the water they knew it was useless Tsu would never be able to save them in this water, she wasn’t built for the cold, frigid temperatures that this water was. Forgiving her as they started to lose feeling in their extremities was as easy as being her friend was to them. When eventually they could no longer bring themself to the surface and they knew it was over, they couldn't force themself to breathe in the water it went against everything their body wanted. They wanted to live they did but as the need to breathe became more and more prominent their lungs burned, their mind went numb and the last thought they had was wanting to say goodbye. In a final act of desperation, their beak opened on its own and sucked in water filling their lungs with fluid.
Back on the deck, Tsu watched the struggle screaming out for someone to come and help. No one showed, no one jumped into the water and pulled Tokoyami to the shore. As Tokoyami sank deeper and deeper into the water Tsu knew it was over. Yelling and Screaming now would only allow them to produce the lifeless body that was Tokoyami now. Never again would anyone hear them recite Edgar Allen Poe from the depth of their memory, they wouldn't surround their friends in an extra cape just because they could for comfort, their room would remain silent with no music blasting from it again.
