Work Text:

“This morning on the breakfast show, we have got the lovely, extremely talented, incredibly affectionate, Mr Edward Sheeran,” Nick spoke into the microphone. “Edward, how’s it going, mate?”

“Mr Nicholas Grimshaw, hello,” Ed replied cheerfully. “I’m good, I’m good, thanks. How about yourself?”

“Well, I’m not doing too badly, thank you,” Nick nodded. “I’ve been annoying the crap out of my boyfriend for the past week for playing your album, Divide, stylised as the symbol ÷, of course.”

“Oh no, what did you want to annoy him for?” Ed asked, his eyes wide.

“Because it’s a bloody good album, and he can sit down and shush for once,” Nick immediately said. “He’s always been a drama queen, as you well know, so he can get used to the fact that it’s not all about him for once.”

“Ohhh, mate, you’re risking the sofa tonight,” Ed chuckled. “I’d like to have it known that I was not involved in that decision making process.”

Nick waved a dismissive hand.

“He’ll get over it,” he assured Ed. “But anyway, let’s talk about your album. It’s beautiful, a wonderful follow-up to Multiply, and the lead singles – yes, people you heard me right, singles plural, are Shape of You and Castle on the Hill. Is there a reason for that?”

He glanced down at his phone as Ed began to answer, smirking a little at the text message that had come through.

Lou: wtf is that supposed to mean? I’m a drama queen? You’re the fucking drama queen in this relationship, you little shit.

Lou: and yes, you’re sleeping on the sofa. Pig and Cliff are gonna keep me company in bed. Screw you.

Nick quickly tapped out a reply.

Grim: or apparently not? Unless you wanna go for it on the sofa again. But last time you said it fucked with your back…

Lou: stop msging me and pay attention to your guest. He’s been rambling for five mins.

Nick looked up at Ed quickly, blushing a little as he realised that the singer had been covering for his silence and distraction.

“Well, how about we hear one of those songs?” Nick scrambled. “Would you like to say something about it?”

Ed smothered a snicker into his hand and gave a quick introduction, before Shape of You began to play, and Nick shut the microphones off, rubbing his hands over his face in embarrassment.

“That the boyfriend distracting you?” Ed asked amusedly.

“Yes, he’s being a dick,” Nick huffed.

“The usual, then,” Ed nodded.

“Yeah, but even so. It’s not fair when I’m at work.”

“I think you probably started it with the comments,” Ed pointed out.

“Yes, thank you Edward, that’s enough from you,” Nick grumbled.

“Fuck you’re so well suited for each other,” Ed snorted.

Later that afternoon, Nick let himself into the flat.

“Babe, I’m home!” he called down the hallway, rolling his eyes at the lack of reply.

He made his way into the living room and shook his head at the sight of his pillow and a blanket already folded up on the sofa, before he searched the rest of the home for his elusive boyfriend. He folded his arms across his chest and leaned against the doorframe of the bedroom, raising his eyebrows at Louis, who’d made himself comfortable in the centre of their bed, the dogs either side of him, and eyes fixed on the television.

“You’re on the sofa, I told you already,” Louis said, without looking at him.

“You only said that cos Ed brought it up,” Nick pointed out.

“It was a good idea, I’ll give the man his due. Besides, it wasn’t just the drama queen comment. It wasn’t very nice listening to you flirting with him.”

“Flirting??” Nick spluttered. “What the fuck were you listening to? I wasn’t flirting!”

“You had your soft voice on, when you were introducing him,” Louis said with a slight pout. “You’re only allowed to use that voice when you talk about me.”

Nick sighed heavily, then crawled over the end of the bed, nudging Pig out of the way and taking his place alongside Louis.

“Darling boy,” he murmured. “You’re the only one I love, the only one I want to flirt with, and the only one my voice goes soft for. I was already thinking about how I’d been annoying you. And how much you actually like the album, no matter how much you’ve been protesting.” He pressed a kiss to Louis’ cheek. “Plus, I had to stop myself babbling about how Photograph is our song, and how you want it to be our first dance at our wedding, oh yeah, and how you’re actually my fiancé, not my boyfriend.”

Louis eyed him suspiciously, but began to sink against him.

“Really?” he asked.

“Really,” Nick swore.

“Hmm, maybe.”

“Such a drama queen.”

“Oi, that sofa’s still ready for you.”

“Yeah, yeah.”
