Your Room Is a Mess

Summary:

Peter Parker is an avenger. Nothing should be able to hurt him, right? Yet a slight raise of a voice does.

Work Text:

Peter was in his room in his spidey suit, hanging onto the web he had attached to the ceiling. He'd been re-watching a show on his phone for the past half an hour, occasionally texting Ned about it.

Just then, May walked in. She stopped at the doorway, and Peter looked at her. "Isn't your suit just for your missions?" She asked.

"Well, yeah." He dropped to the floor. "Don't tell Mr. Stark."

She looked around. "Your room is a mess,"

"Did you just come here to tell me that?" He joked.

May was not having it today. "Clean your room." Her voice had an edge that made his smile fade away.

Was she mad at him? Earlier in the day, he had ranted to her about Star Wars, something he'd really been into recently, but Peter could tell she was only half-listening. He just thought it was her being tired from the workday.

But maybe she was mad at him. Or something else, but what if it was him?

Out of nowhere, tears started forming in his eyes.

No, not this again.

His face scrunched up, and he gasped out a sob, putting his hands to his face.

God, this is embarrassing! She probably isn't even mad. It's probably just you misinterpreting. As usual!

He debated whether he should go out and get some fresh air, but he decided against it and got out of his suit. He couldn't risk FRIDAY sensing what he was going through and telling Tony. Then he'd have to make up some random excuse for it, and he really didn't want to do that.

He tried calming himself, but it was no use. The tears just came with a force he couldn't control. It was stupid, crying about something so meaningless. His brain just had to dissect everything in the most selfish way possible.

He knew he couldn't control it, and he knew this was a part of having ADHD, but sometimes it was hell. Too embarrassing to even explain to others.

He finally stopped crying a few minutes later, leaving his eyes swollen and red. His nose was stuffed too, and he had to tiptoe to the bathroom to take care of it. He couldn't risk May catching him like this. She'd just bombard him with questions, and it was embarrassing enough that he had to go through this.

He decided to take a shower to clean himself up and look like he hadn't just sobbed for the past ten minutes. He'd just barely managed to get past her, without raising any questions from her. He sometimes wished crying wouldn't give him a physical reaction. That this was a part of being Spiderman. Then he could cry all he wanted (or all he didn't want), and it would be ok because he wouldn't have to deal with the aftermath of it all.

After he finished up with his shower, he threw himself on his bed and fell asleep a few minutes later for the day to come.

Notes:

Can not tell you how many times this has happened to me. A slight raise of a voice can make me cry. Just someone not wanting to hang out with me will make the fireworks stream down my face without warning. It makes me feel stupid even though I have no control over it. And I just know my family would make it worse by judging me for it. I know RSD is a part of ADHD, but I still have to get tested for it. And I know it's bad to self-diagnose, but it's crazy how much I relate to people who have been diagnosed and shared their experiences.
