    Scott was hunched over, covered in blankets and tissues, his face beet red and wet with tears. And snot. And was that drool? He looks like a shell of himself. The person Shane's known all these years, the closest thing he's ever had to a role model. It was harrowing… and frankly, a little pathetic.

    "Jesus Christ," Shane mutters under his breath. He looks around the room, taking in the once pristine guest room. The bed is covered in tissues, the pillows thrown around the king size bed. The bedside tables are both decorated with empty bottles of lotion, brown liquor, and even Ilya's good vodka.

    And there's gay porn playing softly on the TV, the two men in the video engaging in tender lovemaking.

    For a little while, the warm, contented feeling persists. Shane settles—not quite as comfortable without Ilya to lean on—and returns to his book. He finishes his chapter and starts another.

    The change comes without any warning. Nothing triggers it, really. Not a bad thought, or anything in the book he's reading that strikes some kind of cord.

    Just, suddenly, something changes in Shane.

    The first thing he notices is the cold. It's summer, and the cottage is warm, sunlight streaming through the windows. So why does he suddenly feel like he's walking through a Montreal street in the dead of winter with no coat? He's actually shivering.
