Putting a Shine On Things

Summary:

Bucky and Steve are planning out an unusual, time-sensitive mission and Bucky needs Tony’s metallurgical expertise.

Stucky July 2021 Flash Bingo - Silver

Work Text:

“It’s not a good idea, Buck,” Steve protested. “It’s too complicated and we don’t have time.”

“Easy for you to say,” Bucky shot back at Steve. “You’ve got your shield.”

“And we’ve both got guns.”

“Those are last resort only. You know that.” Bucky replied fiercely. “They didn’t choose to be like this —Hydra forced it on them. Banner’s already said he’d help out once we brought them in.”

“You told Bruce about all this?” Steve exclaimed. “This mission was supposed to be just you and me.”

“I figured he might have some insight, ya know? Between him and Stark—“

“You’re gonna tell Tony, too?”

You know if anyone can get what I need done, it’s him.”

“Fine,” Steve shook his head. But you better get going - the clock is ticking.”

Tony took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose. “You mean to tell me that you want me to electroplate your entire arm in silver before sunset tomorrow night?”

“Pretty much, yeah.” Bucky hefted the bag of ingots onto the workshop bench with a clank. “I got you the raw materials you’ll need.”

Listen, Buckaroo, if you’re doing this to impress your boyfriend, don’t bother. He already thinks you hung the stars and the moon.”

“Funny you should mention the moon, Stark.” Bucky went on to brief Tony on his his and Steve’s self-appointed mission.

“You and Cap are hunting down a pack of Hydra werewolves,” Tony responded flatly.

“Not so much ‘hunting down’ as rounding up,” Bucky explained. “Best we can tell, Hydra experimented on these people against their wills and we don’t want to hurt them any more than necessary to get them under control. Banner’s gonna help us figure out how to reverse the curse.”

“So, apparently this is our lives now,” Tony muttered, running a hand through his hair before gesturing to bring up a set of holo screens. “Okay. J - fire up Crucible number one.” He pulled up a schematic of Bucky’s arm, and with a few taps on his custom keyboard, the plates floated off the surface onto another screen and a series of numbers scrolled down along one side.

Turning to Bucky, Tony stated, “Here’s the deal. One — it looks like we’ve got time to silver up your fist and part of your forearm, that’s about it.” Bucky nodded; he’d known it was a lot to ask on such short notice.

“Two - I’m coming with you.” Bucky started to protest, but Tony waved him off. “Phasers on stun, yeah, I get that. Final condition — you let me give Rhodey a call - he’s always wanted to meet a wolfman.”
