Amity should’ve known better than to doubt Luz. The girl kept surprising her every day. It started on Covention when Luz insisted on being nice to her even though Amity had been the worst to her. Then the Wailing Star, where Luz was able to make Amity laugh by just being herself, something that never happened with Boscha, Skara, Cat, or Amelia when she was hanging out with them. After their adventure in The Knee, Amity started to see Luz in a new light.
Luz was not like anyone she’d ever met, and that had nothing to do that she was human. It was because Luz always made sure that everyone around her was happy. Amity never had someone like that in her life. Maybe that was why she fell hard for her, but still. Amity was still too afraid to ask her out. Maybe that was for the best.
After the defeat of Grom and everyone decided to enjoy the party properly without the worries about a monster lurking to reveal their deepest fears, Amity stayed close to Willow, Gus, and Luz.
Amity noticed how Luz kept glancing at the clock every few seconds but she stopped when the clock finally told everyone that the party was ending in two hours.
Luz set her cup with apple juice on the table after taking a last big gulp.
“You all wait here! I need to do something!” she said before skipping on her boots and running out of the gymnasium. Amity stole a glance at Willow and Gus who were shaking their heads with smiles in their faces.
“Where did she go?” Amity asked both of them and Willow adjusted her glasses that had started to fall down the bridge of her nose.
“I don’t know the specifics, but Luz did mention she wanted to have her own ‘Magical Girl Transformation’ if she defeated Grometheus.”
“Magical Girl Transformation?” Amity echoed the words and had to refrain from smiling. Only Luz would think to do something so silly and so… Luz.
A few minutes went by until Amity heard Boscha and her friends laugh. Amity turned to face Boscha and her gang and whatever made them laugh.
She was taken back to see Luz wearing her otter onesie, the exact one Luz had shown her earlier that day. Willow and Gus were smiling at Luz, their heads hanging low. Amity covered her mouth with her empty hand and giggled at Luz.
When the green-haired witch opened her eyes, she noticed Willow staring at her, a small smile, and one of her brows raised. With a fake cough, Amity tried to suppress her blush and giddiness.
Of course, it didn’t help when Luz started to try to make everyone at the party laugh with her adorable otter impression. During the course of the next hour, Amity felt her cheeks sore from smiling so much. It had been so long since she felt like this. Happy. Free to laugh.
She had to thank Luz a lot for that.

“Hey! The photo backdrop is empty!” Luz said, pointing her gloved hand at the photographer that was scanning a magazine while he waited for some student to take their pictures.
Amity was never a fan of photos herself, so she always stayed away from them. Except when Luz grabbed her earlier and insisted on taking a photo with her. Amity sighed and took another sip of water to calm the heat in her face.
“You can go take your photos Luz,” Willow said “I think I’m going to just sit on the bleachers and rest.”
“And I think I’m going to find King!” Gus replied, his hand going to scratch his chin as he thought deeply, “He still needs to learn how to properly pander his audience.”
“What about you Amity? Care to join me in an otterly adorable photoshoot?”
Amity rolled her eyes fondly and shook her head.
“I’m good, thanks.” The green-haired witch said, trying to hide the blush on her cheeks.
“Okay! Just checking!” Luz said before skipping on her feet in the direction of the photographer. Amity felt a small smile creeping up her face. That is until Willow cleared her throat.
“What?” Amity asked, defensively.
“Nothing, just a sore throat.” She said before winking at Amity and making her way to the bleachers.
Amity huffed and decided to take a break outside. That would help to clear her mind off one particular cute human.
~
As soon Amity entered the gym after taking a break, she heard laughter. But they didn’t come from the human who had grasped her attention. They all came from the Boscha and her gang as they pointed at the spot where the backdrop was set up.
Amity had a feeling she knew why Boscha was laughing but her suspicions were confirmed when she looked at who was being photographed: Luz.
Amity wanted to shut up Boscha at that moment. How could someone laugh like a wicked witch at someone so pure like Luz?
But Amity wasn’t brave enough to do that. At least not yet.
She approached the backdrop and looked at Luz as she thought to herself, probably about the best pose that would capture the true otter inside her.
Amity's heart fluttered at the thought.
Before she knew it, Amity was behind the backdrop, just outside the field of vision of the camera staring at Luz as she tried a couple of poses to a very tired photographer.
Amity felt the biggest smile yet forming in her lips as the photographer finally took the picture.
“These pictures will be on the Grom Memories Album.” The photographer said, annoyed as ever.
Amity let out a sigh and let go of the backdrop fabric, ready to turn on her heel.
“Hey, Amity!” Luz’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts, “What are you doing back there?”
Amity felt her face getting warm and her throat getting dry.
“I- I was-” Amity tried to come up with something but her brain was melting.
“LUZ THE HUMAN!” Their heads snapped in the direction of Principal Bump's voice, “What is that you’re wearing?!”
“It’s my otter onesie, principal Bump!” Luz explained, twirling on her feet.
“I can see that, but that’s no appropriate wear for Grom! Go out and change or you’re kicked out of the party.”
“But-” Principal Bump glared at Luz and the brunette lowered her head before going out of the gym.
Amity observed Luz until she disappeared from her vision, sighing as the sad face Luz had was burned into her mind.
~
Grom was finally over. Amity had survived the rejection she feared so much and she ended up having one of the best nights of her life.
As she adjusted the Grom tiara on her head, she saw the photographer dumping the pictures on a table. Amity approached the table and glanced at the pictures, immediately searching for the one of Luz in her onesie.
She almost let her tiara fall of her head as she found the one she was looking for, except Amity was on the picture, smiling and looking at Luz and not out of the picture as she expected.
Amity panicked as she held her tiara from falling off her head.
Looking around with her heart racing, she waited until the moment no one was looking in her direction and grabbed the photo, putting it in her dress pocket, the same pocket that once held the pink paper that contained what Amity was so afraid of.
“Hey Mittens!” she heard Edric calling her name, “Let's ditch this place!”
She stole a final glance at Luz before turning on her heel and going after her siblings.
When Amity entered her room, she slumped against her door taking the photograph out of her pocket.
“It’s fine Amity,” she told herself, “Just burn the picture and no one will know a thing.”
She snapped her fingers and a pink flame appeared at the tip of her fingers but before she could touch it, she gave up when she saw the way Luz’s eyes were shining.
She got up from the floor and went over to her diary and put the photo between the pages.
“This doesn’t mean anything.” She said to the picture before closing the diary.
But deep down she couldn’t deny it.
It absolutely meant something.
