Forgiving

Summary:

Sunny and Basil desperately try and forgive themselves for their actions. Having read online that meditation can help with forgiveness, Sunny suggests that he and Basil give it a try.

Notes:

Written as a challenge from my partner to stop being obsessed with SunBurn, I have written this SunFlower fic instead. Also to slightly make a point about dialog.

Chapter Text

"Ooommmmmmmmmm," two boys said in unison. Their pitch matching, they him to center their focus. Concentration plastered across their faces, the young gentlemen will themselves to relax.

Basil read online that meditation can help with forgiveness, and he figured he could give it a shot. At this point, what did he have to lose?

"Ooommmmmmmmmm," they hum, again. Legs crossed, and arms as to the side as possible, they were going to relax.

"This isn't working," Basil droops, losing all posture. His face lands on his knees, and Basil gives up. His partner gives a deep sigh.

Sunny opens his eye, and nods in agreement. "Break?" Basil looks back up, and gives an affirmative noise. The two stand, adjust their clothing, and make their way out of Basil's bedroom. A creak accompanies the opening of Basil's door, and the two make their way to the living room. Disappointment infects their faces.

"Maybe we're thinking too hard," Basil starts. He sits down at a small brown table. "If we think less, maybe it'll make more sense."

"Can't," Sunny responds, his quiet voice ripping through the silence of the house. "Brain won't do that."

"O-oh, sorry. I forgot about the a-anxiety," Basil stammers, being the kettle called black by a pot, feels his own anxiety wrack up at Sunny's words.

"Don't worry about it," Sunny dismisses. His brow furrows in thought. "Maybe it's the location?"

"We could go to the secret hangout!" Basil excitedly suggests. "It has a similar level of privacy, it has fresh air, the smell of water, that could work!"

The two grab their phones, and make their way to the park.

Oh yeah, this is the stuff, Basil thinks to himself, a smile plastered across his soft cheeks. The sensation of being in nature, combined with the closeness of his companion, he was feeling his best self. "Ooommmmmmmmmm," he and Sunny repeated. Maybe it was the environment, maybe it was just how focused he was, but he could hear Sunny less and less. He was so focused, this is the best.

"Ooommmmmmmmmm," Sunny is so quiet, he observes. I can barely hear him. But his heart had never felt so still, he could hardly care. The only thing that could make this better is more flowers to smell. Or maybe a blanket.

"OoommmmmmmmMM," Basil startles as something hits his lap, gentle snoring can be heard, a low rumble against the hitch of Basil's hum. He turns his gaze down to see a sleeping Sunny. His hands placed forwards, his head faces forward. The younger boy's mouth falls open, slack jawed in tiredness.

"U-uh, Sunny?" Basil tries. No response. Oh my god. He thinks. That's too relaxed!

Basil suddenly realized. He is now stuck, and he won't be able to relax like this. He looks at his newly found pillow of a lap. The blonde's eyes widen, taking in the details of his friend's face.

His eyes were darkened with subtle bags, purple with exhaustion. Lashes doing nothing to hide the new lines on his face. Still pale otherwise, his cheeks were slightly flush with the summer warmth, rising to match the red of his small lips. His nose perfectly rounding out the front and aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh

"Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh," Basil's cry is more reminiscent of a deflating balloon, high but airy. Oh god what am I thinking?! Internal screams are coupled with two smacks to the face from each palm. I can't think of Sunny like this! Basil lies, like a liar.

Sunny, on the other hand, is unperturbed by this. His gentle snores were akin to a purring cat. He would look cute with cat ears. Basil ponders, his face flushes more red than the eruption of Tambora, and generates just about as much heat. What am I thinking?! He shouts internally.

His traitorous thoughts slowly getting worse, he ponders how he’s going to get out of this situation. He could wake Sunny up, but he knows how tough it is for the younger boy to sleep. He could try to adjust Sunny so he could move out from under his shockingly warm head. Going back to meditation wasn’t an option anymore, Basil’s focus was completely ruined. Maybe he could call one of their friends?

However during all this deliberation his left hand decided to take matters into its namesake and began petting the dark hair of the pale boy. Dammit! Basil rips his hand away, the sudden movement waking Sunny.

Sunny turns his head and makes eye contact with the gardener. Dazed and confused he raises his eyebrows.

“Uh, I d-don’t think this is working either, Sunny,” Basil stammers out. Sunny relaxes and closes his eye again.

“Comfy.”

“What?!” Basil cries, but there is no response. His lap has been colonized by the pale boy.

Sunny and Basil sat across from one another, both dejected. Gino’s was busier than normal, but that didn’t bother the pair. “Uhh, can I take your order?” The poor waiter didn’t know what the boys had been through. The suffering, the betrayal, the horror.

“Just water for now, thanks,” Basil couldn’t even look him in the eye. He gave the two a concerned look and moved away from the table. The noise of the restaurant smothers the silence of the pair.

“Forgiveness is hard.”

“No one ever said it would be easy, but you’re right. Maybe we aren’t-.”

“Stop,” Sunny interrupts Basil’s self-deprecation.

“A-ah! I’m sorry,” Basil shoots upright to meet his companion’s eye. A determined look plasters Sunny’s face. “Mark is great, but.... Sometimes it’s hard to take what he says at face value.” His eyes glance towards Sunny’s eyepatch. “Uh… so to speak.”

Sunny ponders his friend's confession. “Would you like to hear it?”

Basil responds to his friend with a tilt of his head.

“I forgive you.”

Basil is taken aback for a moment, his eyes shoot wide. “E-eh?!”

“For my eye,” A pause. “I forgive you for my eye.”

Confusion struck Basil like a heart attack. A strange warmth spreads across his chest. A weight he didn’t know he carried raised off his shoulders, dragging his body to the sky. “Huh. Oh wow…”

Sunny raises an eyebrow.

“Thank you. I don’t… I don’t know how to describe it ahah,” Basil chuckles meekly. “I uh… I forgive you for leaving me behind.”

Basil can only assume the face Sunny just made was the face he had just made. A gentle smile creeps along his pale cheeks. He shivers, smile only growing wider. “Thank you.”

The two share a laugh, and a confused waiter comes in with their waters.

“I forgive you for never returning my pencil.”

“I forgive you for peeking at my hand in poker.”

The two had spent the walk back to the bus stop forgiving one another for different things from their shared past. Strings of relief puppeteering the two towards the bus stop, posture straighter than ever. Neither boy could stop smiling, an aura of happiness guarding the two.

“When can you come back?”

“I don’t know, hopefully soon.”

Sunny stared off along the road, appreciating the scene before him. Trees were taller than he remembered. The grass was greener, the birds ever more beautiful, the air cleaner than ever before. He could breathe just a little bit easier.

Basil stares at his friend in profile. A smile tweaks his cheeks, dimples slowly forming towards his eyes. He didn’t mind admiring his friend from afar, but up close was much better.

“I love you,” Sunny says.

“Eh??!!?”
