Chapter Text
To be completely honest, Luz wasn’t sure she could differentiate dreams from reality anymore. She thought that today would be filled with chores, long overdue homework, and helping Eda out around the house. What she didn’t expect was to walk downstairs, still in her pajamas, to a shy looking, very brunette Amity standing in her living room.
“I let her in. Have fun you two. Hoot!” Was all Hooty said before slamming the door behind him, giving the couple space, an action that surprised Luz a little. But frankly she was too busy panicking to really give it a second thought.
“Hey.” Amity was still standing near the entryway, bag slung across her chest, giving Luz a small wave before looking at the floor, grounding the toe of her boots into Eda’s old carpet.
“Um, hi. What’s up?” Luz was trying very hard to ignore the voice in her head screaming at her to run upstairs and get changed. She wasn’t exactly planning on showing her long time crush recently turned girlfriend her bright blue otter pajamas(they were a birthday gift from Gus, bless his soul) anytime soon, and yet her socked feet found themselves crossing the living room until she was in front of Amity.
“Are you busy right now?” The witch had lifted her head, shyly glancing at the human. The other girl had to fight the urge to laugh, motioning to her outfit and bedhead, a grin placed lopsidedly on her face. For a brief moment she wondered if pajamas on the Boiling Isles looked a little different from human ones. All she ever saw Eda wear was old clothes and slippers she could only assume she got from one of her human “treasure hunts''. But then Amity blushed before glueing her gaze back onto the ground, a look of understanding flashing across her face, and Luz knew she got the idea. “Right. Well, I don’t want to be a bother or anything but I kind of need help with something. And usually I would get Ed or Em to help me with it, but they’re seeing a healer right now with my mom and dad and,” Amity snuck a glance up through her lashes, and Luz swore she could look into those golden irises forever. “I’m rambling again, aren’t I?” Luz could only nod before her girlfriend closed her eyes, straightening her posture, taking a deep breath and looking the other girl dead in the eyes with the confidence that Luz was familiar with seeing in the classroom. “Can you help me dye my hair?”
The human was a little floored at the question. She really had no experience in that area nor was she super artistic. It was actually impressive how many comments on report cards she had gotten from art teachers over the years that were along the lines of “doesn’t follow directions well”, “needs to learn to color in the lines”, and her personal favorite: “Has an interesting imagination that might be more well suited for writing rather than sewing together animal parts while pretending to be Dr. Frankenstein”. And that one was from her biology teacher. But who was she to say no to Amity.
...
Luz’s room at the Owl House wasn’t much, but she liked it. Sure, back home her room was bigger, with plush carpet and pictures of her and her mom when she was little decorating her desk by the window that overlooked her street. If she was lucky and the sky was clear at night, she could see the stars and moon just over the tops of the trees. There were her stuffed animals lined up on her bed, The Good Witch Azura posters covering any blank space on her wall, and shelves of books and journals filled with her own stories that had added up over the years. And while her new room wasn’t yellow and didn’t smell like cinnamon, it had its own character to it. It got cold some nights and she had to sleep in a sleeping bag, but King and lots of blankets made it bearable. Plus, they’re adventures decorated every corner of it, illuminated at night by the bright stars overhead. She had her window perch with the entirety of the Bonesborough laid out in front of her. It wasn’t home, but it was starting to feel like it.
Amity standing in the middle of it didn’t feel nearly as weird as she thought it would.
“You can take a seat anywhere, sorry I don’t have a chair.” The witch shrugged off her bag as she sat herself down next to Luz’s makeshift bed, taking a minute to admire the room, mouth open in awe.
“It’s alright. What is all this stuff?” Luz could feel the blush creeping onto her cheeks, but couldn’t stop the dopey grin that followed.
“I like to think of it like a timeline of all our adventures.” Luz tried to follow Amity’s gaze as she looked around the room with a newfound curiosity, reliving all of her old quests with Eda and the others: the creature from King’s castle, a chest full of clothes including the Witch attire she stole from her mentor, her crown from Grom, and her newest addition, the Echo mouse. She felt her girlfriend’s eyes linger on the crown for a moment longer than anything else and Luz swore her heart skipped a beat. “Anyway,” she said, flushing crimson, “you want to re-dye your hair right?” Amity seemed to snap out of whatever trance she had been in, nodding before reaching into her bag and pulling out of a bottle of some purple liquid. It bubbled slightly as she passed it to Luz which did nothing to help calm her nerves. “Uh, Amity?” The other girl glanced back, the human giving her a questioning look while motioning to the bottle.
“I’m guessing the human realm does this differently?”
“Yup.” Luz made sure to pop the “p”.
“Okay.” She turned around fully this time, facing Luz, placing her hand over Luz’s own that held the bottle. She almost dropped it at the sudden contact. Her and Amity were together now, but it didn’t mean that her heart didn’t almost jump out of her chest at any kind of contact with the witch. “Just pour some of the liquid into your hand and massage it into the part that you want to dye. It might take a couple of tries for it to take, but it will eventually turn the right color. And don’t worry, it won’t turn your skin purple.” Luz let out a sigh of relief.
“That’s it?”
“Yeah pretty much. Why? What’s it like in your world?”
“Well,” she started, uncorking the bottle and applying a slight amount of the solution to her palm before beginning to massage it into Amity’s roots. She was still looking at her, face slightly skewed by her bangs. Luz wasn’t sure she was going to survive this visit. “You start out getting chemicals applied to your hair to kill it which strips it of all the color. And then you apply more chemicals to it which will change its color to the one that you want. But usually the dye washes out after a while and you have to do the whole thing all over again.”
“Sounds painful.” Luz laughed a little at that.
“Yeah, I suppose it does. I’ve never dyed my hair but I don’t think it hurts. At least it isn’t supposed to. Am I doing this right?”
“Is it turning purple?” Luz nodded. “Then yes.”
“Okay.” She worked in silence, Amity watching her as she tried her best to make it seem like she knew what she was doing. In all honesty, it was a bit awkward. Luz felt like she should say something, but aside from the fear of messing up Amity’s dye job, what would she even say? Hey Amity, I think I’m in love with you? Or I know we’re dating now but I still get super nervous around you and my heart speeds up and I think I’m dying? Or possibly Is it weird I want to kiss you every chance I get? Her girlfriend must have sensed the tension, filling in the silence for her.
“It was you, you know.” She didn’t look at Luz, head straight forward, gazing just past her, eyes glued to the scratched up wood. “Who I wanted to ask to Grom, it was you.” This time Luz did drop the bottle. Amity was quick though, catching it just before it hit the ground.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry.” Amity just laughed, looking up fully, smiling bright and wide at her girlfriend, laughing authentically. It was a sound Luz wanted to hear her entire life.
“I didn’t think, I mean, oh my titan Luz.” She couldn’t stop, the giggles were rolling out of her in waves and eventually Luz got sucked down into them, laughing along with her. It was stupid and was starting to make her side hurt, but it felt good . It was the most normal and happy she had felt in a while, but then again Amity had something about her that just made her inexplicably happy. Luz didn’t know much about friendships, let alone relationships, but this just felt right.
When the pair finally calmed down and Amity could breathe again without her entire chest shaking from laughter, Luz deemed it safe enough to finish up what she had been doing.
“Okay all your roots are covered. Can you stand up? I want to make sure I didn’t miss anything.” The other girl obliged, rising as Luz circled her slowly, finger resting on her chin, lower lip pinched between her teeth. When she circled back to face Amity, something seemed to register in her mind. “Do you want to dye these strands too? I didn't think they were purple before so I didn’t want to touch them, but I still have some dye left over if you’d like.” She said, reaching out and barely gracing the two brown pieces of hair that framed the witch’s face. Amity just shook her head, hand rising to the back of her neck, scratching it subconsciously.
“I want to keep some of it brown. I kind of like it.” Her girlfriend nodded before pivoting to the large chest on the floor, digging through it until she found a small, handheld mirror. She couldn’t remember when Eda had given it to her or where the older witch had even gotten it from but as ornate as it was, it did the job just fine. Handing it to Amity, she saw the other’s eyes light up.
“Wow Luz, this actually looks really good. Thank you.”
“I’m just glad it was easy.” She said, sighing a little.
“Well,” Amity inched a little closer, bangs practically brushing against her girlfriend’s forehead. All Luz could smell was lavender and something distinctly like clean linen. “I think it looks lovely.” The witch placed her lips on Luz’s cheek ever so lightly before pulling away, cheeks flushing red. The other girl stood there dumbly for a moment, before grabbing Amity’s hand, intertwining their fingers.
“Well, if you’re not busy, you are more than welcome to stay here for a bit.”
“I would love to.”
