“Xiongzhang,” whispers Wangji, “how does a person go on?”

Xichen’s heart breaks. It was one thing to suspect Wangji’s feelings toward Wei-gongzi, but it is another to have them confirmed in the sight of his brother curled on the ground, quietly devastated. He wraps a hand around Wangji’s shoulder and squeezes.

“A person finds something else to live for,” he says quietly, helplessly. Wangji looks at him, expression cracked. “What would Wei-gongzi want you to live for?”

He almost regrets the words, because Wei-gongzi gave everything up to protect the Wens, and there is nothing anyone can do for them now. He can see Wangji following the same train of thought. But then Wangji says, “To defend the weak. To be righteous.”

“Then do that,” breathes Xichen, something like hope or relief curling in his chest.


He watches his little brother internalize it, build a reputation as the cultivator that helps the common people, that goes where he is needed without regard for the glory it can bring him or the subtle judgment of the other sects, and is proud of him.


Wei-gongzi comes back to life, and at first Xichen is surprised to see the way Wangji lets every flirtation, every teasing remark roll off his back, and looks at Wei-gongzi as though…as though none of it matters. He has the love of his life back, and clearly that's all he cares about, regardless of whether or not Wei-gongzi returns his feelings.

“Thirteen years,” is all Wangji says the one time Xichen brings it up, and the rest falls into place. Wangji has had a very long time to reflect on his regrets and figure out what he would have done differently, given another chance, and now he has one.

I know it is narrated by Xichen, who does not appear in the video, but it's intending to communicate the same thing, so.

(The music copyright only makes it so I can't put my own ads on this video and make money off it--fair--but the video copyright makes it unplayable in all territories.) I don't understand the pattern at all.

me: but it's all the same footage as the literal first video I made? (tries to reupload that first video to see if standards have changed)

me: (edits entire new video to use the same lower-quality footage as in that first video, uploads video)

Me: ok (crops all video between 0:45 and 1:23 so the tencent logo doesn't show and hopes that helps, reuploads)

I have tried like 7 uploads and every time I'm afraid YouTube is going to realize that I'm trying to get around its algorithm. so. you are going to have to click the link. I promise it's worth it.
