Water splashed heavy and cold against Laurice's clothes, swimming in the blurry dark with his eyes on that angel-white hood.
It hadn't been that long ago when his own life was in danger, threatened in the courtroom with the death penalty for a crime he didn't, couldn't, wouldn't commit.
Phoenix had stood up for him, asked for him by name. Promised his boss that he was ready for a homicide trial because he needed to save his oldest friend. Laurice was alive now because of that.
He couldn't save Cindy, but the least he could do was repay Nick's favor.
