Of all the misfortunes in the world, Eijun had to have sent his confession to the wrong person.
His morning had started perfectly. He ran a few laps before dawn, ate breakfast heartily and chatted with his friends before going back to his room. He didn’t forget to smile to his crush, giddily remembering the shine on those amber eyes and that blinding grin (he also yelled at him and grabbed him by the collar, but that was to be expected considering he was a tanuki).
Today was the day he would confess to Miyuki Kazuya, he decided.
Eijun spent an hour formulating the best message he could for the perfect confession. He flipped through hundreds of manga pages (Youichi screamed at him to pick up all his mangas on the floor or he would burn the goddamn trash) and even consulted Jun through email for more tips. Once he finished typing the message, he scrolled through his contacts and clicked ‘Captain’ before sending it.
(He discreetly asked him for a date at the end of the message.)
The day went smoothly afterwards. Since it was a day-off, he played a few video games with Youichi. He got bored soon and went outside to run more laps as he waited for a reply. Knowing Miyuki Kazuya, Eijun guessed that the tanuki was probably asleep and would awaken at dinner time. He just had to be patient.
Lunch was calmer than usual. Though he got a few funny looks from some of the third years, he ignored them and cheerily told his friends a story about his recent manga adventures – a girl who reincarnated in her favorite game as a villain. He shared about how almost all the love interests fell in love with the girl, moving his hands enthusiastically. Haruichi and Shinji looked bored and Furuya was sleeping, but that didn’t deter him from his storytelling.
(Hideaki was pretending to listen as he tried to recall their earlier lessons in Math.)
About late in the afternoon, he noticed a tall figure waiting outside his room.
“Oi, Yuuki-senpai!” exclaimed Eijun. “What brings you here?”
Tetsuya scratched his head. “I want to talk about the message you sent.”
Eijun stopped in his tracks. “Message?”
Confusion filled Eijun’s mind as he tried to wrack his brain for a memory of sending a message to his former captain. From what he could remember, he only sent a message to his crush. He shook his head and waited for Tetsuya to say something.
“Didn’t you send this?”
Eijun froze. The message he was supposed to send to Miyuki Kazuya glared at him from Tetsuya’s phone screen. He opened his mouth, but his voice wouldn’t come out. He had forgotten that he saved both their names as captain. He was so stupid.
Tetsuya blinked. “I haven’t really thought about dating in general, much less dating boys, but if you’re serious, I don’t mind trying.”
Eijun’s mind combusted.
***
Eijun was now miserably preparing himself for the date. It wasn’t as if he disliked Yuuki-senpai. The former captain was very reliable and kind – he admired him on his performance last summer and regretted that he couldn’t go to Koshien. Still, he wasn’t Miyuki Kazuya.
(Eijun wouldn’t have agreed to go on the date if Jun wasn’t hiding in the corridor.)
As he stepped out of the door, he bumped into Shinji who looked at him suspiciously.
“Where are you going, Wamura?”
Eijun chuckled nervously. “Hahaha! Fear not, Kanemaru. This Sawamura Eijun is going on a date.”
Shinji gaped. “A date? With who?”
“Hahaha! With Leader-san.”
Shinji stared at him blankly. “Huh?”
Waving at Shinji more cheerily than usual, Eijun sprinted towards the Seidou gate. He gasped once he arrived. Tetsuya looked more different than usual. He wore casual clothes that fit his stature (Eijun swore those clothes were owned by Chris-senpai) and his hair was slightly gelled. He looked more handsome than usual.
(Eijun realized Yuuki-senpai was really handsome when he’s not looking scary at the field.)
“Sawamura-kun,” greeted Tetsuya.
Eijun smiled. “You’re early, Yuuki-senpai.”
“Shall we go?”
The walk to the café was almost silent, if not for the fact that Eijun couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Yuuki wasn’t keen on starting a conversation – he was always the silent type anyway – so Eijun recounted a recent manga he had read yesterday.
“Didn’t the girl die in the ending?” asked Tetsuya.
Eijun widened his eyes. “How did you know, Leader-san?”
Tetsuya smiled. “I recalled Jun complaining about a musical manga last week. He said the girl main character died and he moped for a few days.”
Eijun chuckled. “Sounds like Spitz-senpai. It was really sad, captain! I even cried while reading the manga. You should try reading it.”
The two spent the whole afternoon munching on sweet desserts as Eijun talked more about the new mangas he had read. After a long speech about flower language, Eijun asked Yuuki about his favorite books.
“I mostly read Japanese History and Classical Literature.”
Eijun was delighted. “I love history, senpai! Tell me more.”
And so, the supposed-to-be silent captain narrated stories about the Edo period – one of his favorite periods - and the battles among the samurai. Eijun added a few bits and pieces from what he learned from his grandfather, nodding along as he drank the words Tetsuya was saying. Eijun was a bit disappointed that the talk had to end since it was already late.
“Maybe we should go on another date next time,” muttered Eijun. “Miyuki Kazuya would have to wait.”
***
“How was the date, Eijun-kun?” asked Haruichi. “Was Yuuki-senpai good?”
Eijun nodded excitedly. “It was so fun! I can’t believe we like similar topics! I want to talk to him more. He is also really kind. He paid for all the food, and he even bought me chocolates. I’ll give you some later.”
Haruichi smiled. “I thought you liked Miyuki-senpai?”
“Gah! Yeah, I do,” said Eijun, scratching his head. “But, I doubt he likes me back anyway. All he does is tease me. I’ll just focus on getting to know Yuuki-senpai.”
“Whatever you say.”
Haruichi grinned darkly, but Eijun didn’t notice.
***
“Didn’t you hear? Sawamura is dating Yuuki-san?”
“Eh? Who told you that?”
“One of my classmates. He saw the two in a café near the train station.”
“Huh? I didn’t even know our former captain was interested in dating.”
“Apparently, it was Sawamura who asked him out.”
“Are they boyfriends – “
Kazuya slammed his spoon and fork at the table. Cursing internally, he left the cafeteria as a few people stared at him, surprised.
Youichi sighed. He was not looking forward to deal with a moping Miyuki Kazuya.

Eijun noticed a few changes from his crush’s behavior. Kazuya was a little bit kinder to him. It honestly weirded him out. Thinking it was just a passing phase, Eijun ignored the captain and focused on his date.
Tetsuya was taking him out to a history museum.
Eijun was ecstatic for the most part of the date. He loved learning more about history and it was fun to talk with Tetsuya. He initially thought he would be spending most of the time talking to a wall. To his surprise, Tetsuya was actually really talkative on topics he liked.
After the date, Eijun summoned his courage and admitted to Tetsuya the truth about his message.
“Leader-san, honestly, I was supposed to send that message to Miyuki Kazuya.” Eijun sighed heavily. “But, after careful consideration, I think that I’m still really interested in getting to know you better and I – “ Eijun chuckled nervously. “I might have a crush on you, too.”
Tetsuya blinked. “So, you like Miyuki-kun?”
Eijun nodded. “Yes, but I also like you. I don’t think Miyuki-senpai likes me back, so I’d like to get to know you better.”
Tetsuya stared at Eijun for a minute.
“Leader-san?” asked Eijun, looking away as his hands shook.
“Okay.”
Eijun glanced at Tetsuya. “Eh?”
“I don’t mind it.” Tetsuya smiled softly. “I had fun going on dates with you. Besides, I’d rather not lose to a fellow captain.”
“Huh?”
Tetsuya chuckled. “Honestly, I think Miyuki likes you back. But since I’m interested in dating you, I’ll do my best not to lose to him.”
Eijun frowned. “Huh? Eh?!”
***
“Bakamura, you look really happy,” commented Youichi as he stared at the television screen intently.
Eijun laughed. “Of course, Kuramochi-senpai. This Sawamura Eijun just came home from a very fun date after all!”
Youichi glanced at Eijun. “Huh. I was shocked that you confessed to Yuuki-senpai. I thought you liked Miyuki.”
“I do.”
Youichi froze. “Huh? What do you mean you do?”
Eijun chuckled nervously. “Honestly, I accidentally sent my confession to Yuuki-senpai instead of Miyuki.”
“EH?!”
Eijun nodded, oblivious to Youichi’s gaping mouth. “I already told Yuuki-senpai but he didn’t mind it if I liked them both. He said he’ll do his best not to lose. I told him Miyuki doesn’t really like me, so there is no winner or loser.”
Youichi looked bewildered. “Bakamura, are you serious?”
“Yeah. I mean, why would the Miyuki Kazuya like me back?”
“Shit,” muttered Youichi. “This is the worst. I can’t believe I’m going to be part of a shoujo manga plot.”
***
“Are you seriously nuts?!” Youichi scowled at Kazuya. “How can you think that offering pitching sessions is considered as flirting?! You’re fucking hopeless!”
Kazuya glared at Youichi. “That’s why I’m asking for help.”
Youichi slapped his forehead. “Why am I obligated to do this?”
“For your captain’s inner peace.”
Of all the misfortunes in the world, Youichi’s roommate had to have sent his confession to the wrong person. Now he was stuck helping a pining asshole with flirting skills of a toddler.
“You’ll pay for this, Bakamura!”
