A Peaceful Sleep

Summary:

Weisz is up late working on a project, and Shiki insists on keeping him company.

Work Text:

"Weisz, it's getting late," Shiki pouted, peering in from the doorway. He looked over at the clock Weisz kept on the front end of the desk in his workshop, "don't you think you ought to sleep?"

The blond shook his head, fiddling with bits of metal and various wires, "Not yet. I'm close to being finished with this. Just a little ways to go."

"Can't you work on it tomorrow?"

"Well, in theory I suppose," he exhaled, exasperated at his own inability to leave things unfinished and take a break. "But I want to finish it tonight. I can't rest peacefully until I do."

Just then the door creaked shut and Shiki bounced over to the table where Weisz was working,  "Alright, then I'll keep you company while you work."

"Shiki you don't have to-"

"I want to," the boy asserted, sliding up close to him.

The warmth of Shiki next to him made him both nervous and at the same time, comforted. Having someone watch him work made him a little anxious, but if it was Shiki it wasn't so bad. In fact, Weisz valued his presence. Whether he had the nerve to admit it or not, he was glad that Shiki decided to stay with him.

The room was painted with shadows by now, lit only by the table lamp Weisz kept on his desk. He preferred it this way, having things too bright just didn't feel right. Back on Norma, he was used to working under dim lights and so having low lighting like this felt natural.

He fit the wires into their place along the metal plates, "You're not tired at all, Shiki?"

"Nope!"

Weisz couldn't help but grin at the enthusiasm, "I see. Weren't you training earlier today though?"

"Yeah, so?"

"Well for normal people, exerting yourself like that depletes your energy and makes you tired," the blond quipped, squinting down at the contraption in his hands, "but I suppose you are a rare breed of superhuman."

"I am?"

"You are," he sang with confidence, "for some reason, you've been blessed with never ending energy. It's a surprise you even sleep at all."

Shiki snorted, "If you say so, Professor."

"Oi, what did I say about calling me that!" Weisz clicked his tongue at the boy, "It makes me feel old."

He giggled in response. Clearly, Shiki loved teasing Weisz as much as his other crewmates, and although it agitated him to no end when others did it, there was always a sweet aftertaste to Shiki's jabs. It was impossible not to find the charm in it.

Weisz sighed, clicking pieces into place. He fiddled around a little more and before long, he felt a sudden weight on his shoulder.

Carefully turning his head to the side, he caught a glimpse of Shiki, who had fallen fast asleep nestled up next to him. His heart pounded as he watched the boy breath comfortably next to him.

"So you were tired after all," Weisz kissed the top of his head, "I guess a superhuman like you has his limits too, huh?"

He shifted his gaze back to the object in his hands. If he was too stubborn to stop working before, that had certainly dissipated by now. There's no way he could concentrate as it stood. Not when Shiki was cuddled up next to him like this. The boy was like a puppy that was simply too cute to wake.

He chuckled to himself. Moving smoothly and quietly, Weisz picked Shiki up, holding him in his arms, "Alright, let's head to bed then. With you by my side there's no way my sleep won't be peaceful."
