Chapter Text

A rhythmic chopping sound filled the kitchen as Yang prepared the ingredients needed for dinner. She swore to herself that she wouldn’t let this catch on fire like dinner did yesterday. She still couldn’t figure out how she’d managed to do that. She heard the patter of little footsteps running up to her and smiled. Shawn ran in and hugged his mothers legs. Yang looked down and felt love blossom in her chest. She adopted the 7 year old Faunus after seeing him in the orphanage, lonely and wanting a home . She had loved him from the beginning and promised to never let anything hurt him. He reminded Yang of Blake, his cats ears and tail always reflecting his emotions. Thinking of her partner made her smile falter slightly, immediately catching Shawn’s attention.
“Mama…why do you look sad?”
Yang looked at her son and sighed “It’s nothing, you hungry?”
Shawn smiled and nodded enthusiastically. Yang grinned and concentrated on not ruining the meal.

Yang tucked Shawn into bed, making sure he was snug. He giggled as she booped his nose and then kissed his forehead. He looked at her, “Mama can you tell me the story again? About you and Auntie Ruby and Auntie Weiss and Auntie Blake beating the monster?”
Yang grinned slightly and nodded, “Alright.” Shawn shuffled a little in his bed and let his mother lay in the bed with him.
“Before you came into my life, me and your three Aunties had to face off a horrible monster that threatened all of Remnant.”
Shawn perked up, “Salem…”
Yang nodded, “It was thanks to your Auntie Blake that we were able to take her down. She figured out that your Auntie Ruby’s eyes could beat her, take her out for good.”
Shawn nodded and his ears shot up a little, “And Auntie Blake saved you!”
Yang let out a soft laugh, “That’s right…your Auntie Blake saved my life.”
Shawn snuggled close to his mother, “I wanna be like her, save people and be a hero.”
Yang chuckled softly and hugged her son, “Oh I bet you will be, but your gonna need sleep if you want to be a hero.”
Shawn grinned and closed his eyes, trying his hardest to fall asleep. In a few minutes his features relaxed as he drifted off.
Yang slipped out of the bed and turned off the light. She went to the kitchen to finish the dishes and glanced at the Team RWBY picture. Tears welled up in her eyes as her thoughts drifted off to what really happened that day.

———————————

“Yang! Look out!!”
Yang looked up to see a Beowulf charging at her, she cocked back her arm and gave a swift punch with Ember Celica. As the Beowulf dissipated she looked at her partner and gave her a thumbs up. Blake smiled at her and nodded. The two ran over to where Ruby and Weiss was, all of them out of breath. Ruby was frantically thinking of a plan. Jaune’s team, along with Oscar and Qrow were a good 30 minutes away. Why didn’t they wait dammit! It was obvious now Salem’s threat to use the relic was a ruse! Yang sighed and looked up “What if we kill her?”
The rest of the team gave her a look and Yang groaned “I know she’ll come back but I mean, it took her a while to regenerate once before right? We could use that time to grab the relic and go!”
Ruby nodded, “Alright…but how?”
Yang grinned, “Leave it to me!”
Before the team could react, Yang charged towards Salem, using her gauntlets to pick up speed. Blake ran promptly after her, calling her name. Yang ignored Blake as she slammed her fist into Salem’s chest, planting detonators into her skin. Salem looked with shock but then chuckled, “You can’t kill me.”
Yang laughed back, “No I can’t…but I can give us time!!”
She leaped back to where Blake was waiting. She set of the bombs and watched them explode, along with Salem. Ruby and Weiss were running to get to the two. Yang turned to Blake and grinned, “I got her!! Let’s get the relic and get out of here!”
Blake smiled back but her face quickly turned to shock. Before Yang could say a word, Blake grabbed her and spun them around as a sharp claw stabbed through her chest, splattering Yang with Blake’s blood. Yang’s eyes went wide and Blake looked down at the claw in her chest. She coughed blood and looked at Yang, “Y-Yang? I-I-it hurts..”
Yang only whimpered, “Blake…”
Ruby and Weiss screamed in both anger and grief. The claw pulled itself out of Blake’s chest, letting her fall to the ground. It retracted to where Salem stood, her wounds stitching themselves together. “Foolish girl, I have trained my body to regenerate quickly, rather then take too much time. True it is tiring, but it works.”

Yang kneeled by Blake as tears streamed from her eyes, she carefully scooped up her partner and took cover, gently letting Blake lay against a pile of rubble. Ruby and Weiss ran over and tried to see what they could do. Yang ripped off her coat and draped it over Blake. Blake coughed weakly, bleeding heavily from the hole in her chest.
Ruby took Blake’s hand “B-Blake! Blake please! Stay with us okay?!”
Blake looked at Ruby, confusion first in her face but then realization. “Eyes….”
Ruby sniffled, “W-What?”
Blake smiled slightly, “Y…your eyes…l-l-light b-beats darkness..”
Ruby went slightly wide-eyed, “Light beats dark…”
Blake nodded a little, Yang and Weiss slowly coming to realization. Ruby nodded and looked at Weiss firmly, “I need your help in holding Salem down, okay?”
Weiss nodded and took one last look at Blake, she gently rubbed her ears, trying to give a small amount of comfort. Blake smiled at her, “I-I’ll be okay…I-Ice Q-Q-Queen…”
Weiss smiled back and got up, looking at Ruby, “We can do this… for Blake.”
Ruby grinned and looked at Blake, “You hang on okay Blake?”
Blake gave a slight nod of the head.
Ruby looked at Weiss, both of them running towards Salem. Yang watched the two of them fending off Salem, but she knew they needed her. She looked at Blake and was surprised to see Blake nudging Gambol Shroud towards her. Blake looked up at her, “T-Take it…with…y-you.”
Yang rubbed Blake’s cheek, “I-I can’t just leave you.”
Blake smiled and took Yangs hand. “I’ll…I’ll always be w-with you…I promise…”
Yang felt Blake’s hand on her chest, gently pushing her towards the battle. Yang leaned forward and softly kissed Blake on the lips. They held it before Yang pulled away slowly. Blake gave her a grin and nodded, watching Yang run towards the fight.
Weiss used her glyphs to quickly maneuver Ruby in a position of where she could catch Salem with the power of her eyes. She then froze the area around where Salem stood.
Before Salem could free herself, Yang quickly came from behind and held Salem tightly forcing her in place. Ruby activated her eyes and yelled “THIS IS FOR BLAKE YOU BASTARD!!” Salem could not move before the force of the silver eyes enveloped her.

She screamed in agony as it burned through her darkness, disintegrating her into nothingness. The trio sat in silence before Yang started laughing, “Yes..YES!! YOU DID IT RUBY!! YOU GOT HER!!”
Weiss ran over and grabbed the relic letting out a sigh of relief. Ruby slid down and joined the two of them, “It was thanks to Blake that…oh my God.. BLAKE!!”
They ran to where Blake was, Yang reaching to her first and gently cupping her face, “Hey! Hey Blake, baby, we got her! Ruby’s eyes worked you were right!”
Ruby felt her breath leave her momentarily when she saw Blake. Her skin pale and her eyes closed, her chest still and unmoving. Weiss put her hand to her mouth and sobbed. Yang was still for a moment before rubbing Blake’s cheek. It was in that moment that Yang realized, Blake was gone. Ruby was crying as she laid her hand on Yangs shoulder, “Sis…Yang, she..she’s gone..”
Yang shook her head, “N-No…No she’s just hurt real bad okay? W-we gotta get her out of here!”
Weiss put her hand on Yang’s other shoulder, “Y-Yang honey…”
Yang sighed and turned to her, “What?!”
Weiss sniffled, “Yang we…she’s gone Yang, she’s dead.”
Yang stared at her before turning back to Blake. Ruby tried to pull Yang away, “Yang we..we gotta go okay?”
Yang shook her head and pulled Blake into her arms, letting her head lay in the crook of her neck hugging her body and rubbing her hair, her crying intensified. She rocked back and forth, Ruby and Weiss trying to pull her away. “No! No!! W-We can still help her guys! WE CAN STILL HELP HER!! NOO!!”
Ruby and Weiss had to drag Yang away, her cries echoing in the area around.

———————————

Yang rubbed her eyes, tears threatening to stream down. She focused herself on the dishes, trying to distract herself.
She remembered Blake’s funeral, her parents thanking Yang, Weiss and Ruby for avenging Blake and trying to save their daughter. Yang saw it fitting to give Gambol Shroud to Ghira and Kali, they gratefully accepted it before both of them hugged Yang, all of them crying.
It was a year and a half later when Yang found Shawn, his small body shivering in the orphanage. She picked him up and gave him food and new clothes. He was shy at first but then became more talkative. What struck Yang’s heart was his eyes, golden amber eyes that glinted with personality, even when he wasn’t talking, he was speaking with his eyes, just like Blake.
Yang knew that one day Shawn would find out the true story of his Auntie Blake. How she gave her life for the woman she loved and how she was one of the only reasons for the victory. But for now, she wanted him to stay innocent, to be kept safe from the cruelty of the world. Maybe one day, one day he’ll learn of their Last Mission.
