Work Text:
Every time he runs the comb down her hair, he remembers a moment that could’ve led to this.
If he let her heal his scar.
If he said more than his thanks for her healing his lightning-stricken heart.
If he pleaded “stay” rather than bid “see you again” at least one of the many times she’s been in the Fire Nation.
If he cared less about hurting the Avatar’s feelings.
If he braved against the pressures of his countrymen.
If he ignored the children, one by one coming into the picture.
If he knew what he knows now. That he could’ve simply told her, and she would’ve paved a way.
Every time he runs the comb down her now white hair, he remembers the many moments that could’ve led to this much, much earlier .
“Katara, I’m so sorry this is only the first time I can do this for you.”
