Chapter 1: rip

Chapter Text

Iwaizumi pulled up to his boring old apartment complex. He’d had a long day at work, and he knew there was only one way to really recharge. He glanced over at the old rental car next to his and smiled. Oikawa always gets home before him, always waiting on the couch smiling and ready to greet him. In recent days, both he and his husband have been extremely busy. Oikawa had finally had a couple months of downtime after the summer Olympics due to some... complications, so he came up to Japan to stay with Iwaizumi and revisit his old town. As devastating as the Olympics were, Iwaizumi was somewhat grateful for the time it had allowed for him and Oikawa to be together, selfish as it may sound.

Grabbing his things, he turned off his car and stepped out, slamming the door a little harder than intended. He got to the door expecting to hear Oikawa’s shitty music blasting or something cooking on the stove probably burning over, but nope, just silence. Maybe he's sleeping. Iwaizumi, standing at the door, blindly fumbled around in his bag looking for his keys before realizing they were probably still in his car. Walking back, he heard a small rattle near the dumpster behind the complex. Probably the little black alley cat that took a liking to Oikawa over the past few weeks. Grabbing his keys, he went to unlock the door as quietly as possible.

Wait. Its already unlocked? Oikawa never leaves it unlocked. Something about wanting an audio warning when someone is walking into the room or something dumb and extra. But this was unusual, something's not right. Bracing for the worst, he slowly opened the door, half expecting to see some homeless person raiding their kitchen or something. But what was met to Iwaizumi’s eyes was so much worse than worse. Something he could’ve never imagined.
Cracking the door open he could already see red. Deep red. Everywhere. He glanced down, a familiar shoe in sight, covered in blood. No.

He swung the door open. To his absolute horror lay the love of his entire life, eyes wide open staring up at him. His face, pulverized, but he knew it was Oikawa. Iwaizumi’s body frozen in place as his eyes traced down to Oikawa’s hand, which was clutching the chain around his neck. Their wedding ring. Fuck.

Suddenly, life sprung back into Iwaizumi’s body. A suffocating wave of heat rushed over him and stole the air from his lungs. His knees fell weak, and he stumbled to the blood soaked ground. Trembling hands reached for the face that wore such a bright smile all its life. He didn’t dare touch that delicate face, in fear it would disappear all together. His breath hitched then it hit him all at once. He finally remembered he could scream. He let out the loudest cry he’d imagine he’d ever yelled, neighbors be damned. Anyone be damned.

Oikawa, his best friend, his soulmate, his entire world, his husband was dead. In the most brutal way possible. Who would do this to the kindest person he knew. Who?

He silently sobbed, tears dripping onto Oikawa’s face as Iwaizumi kneeled over the body. He reached down and softly unclenched the fist that grasped on so tightly to the wedding ring. Holding the hand with so much force, hoping by some miracle Oikawa would wake up due to the sheer will power that Iwaizumi seemed to be giving off. But alas. Defeated, he dropped the hand to the body’s chest. But the sudden movement caused the body to jolt just slightly, shift the head and dislodging the bat buried into Oikawa’s face. It rolled over and stopped on a-

Iwaizumi winched at the sight of his love’s split face, even worse than he imagined it’d look. He noticed the bat, a dark indent near the base of the handle. Reaching over, he grabbed the bloodied bat, wiped away at the indent to notice an engraving: Kageyama Kazuyo

Kageyama...
