Doctors are the Worst Patients

Summary:

Oneshot I wrote in like an hour lol

Doctor Jared never goes to the hospital when he’s hurt. It drives his husband, Jensen, absolutely insane.

Just some hurt and fluff for you :)

Work Text:

“You know, I absolutely hate when you do this.”

“I know.”

“And yet, you keep doing it.”

Jensen continued dabbing the wet washcloth on Jared’s exposed palm, clenching his jaw as he watched his boyfriend sigh and drop his head into his other, free hand.

The thing was, Jared was a doctor - a damn good one, at that - but as everyone knows, doctors tend to make the absolute worst patients in the world. He flat out refused to go to a hospital whenever anything happened to him, downplaying the severity of the injury or insisting that he knew what it was and it wasn’t that bad . Of course, if any of the things that happened to him happened to Jensen , he would be speeding them to a hospital without second thought. He was just so stubborn about it and it drove Jensen absolutely insane because seeing his love hurting was the worst pain in the world and he worried about him like crazy.

Like right now. Jared was trimming a big brisket to throw on the grill for dinner later and the knife slipped and slid right into his palm. There was a two inch long gash across his palm and it was bleeding like crazy.

“Shit.” Jared had muttered, and that cued Jensen to get up and check on him.

“What’s wrong?” He’d asked with furrowed brows, and then he saw the blood and his stomach dropped, “Shit!”

Very quickly they got into an argument because Jensen was sure that thing needed stitches and Jared rolled his eyes and said it was ‘fine, I just need some bandaids.’

And now they’re here; Jared sitting at the kitchen counter with his forehead in his hand and Jensen holding a washcloth tightly to his wounded palm in hopes of keeping it clean and stopping the bleeding.

“I still think it needs stitches.” Jensen mumbled, huffing.

“I’m a doctor Jensen.” Jared grumbled, “If I don’t think it needs stitches, it doesn’t need stitches.”

Jensen rolled his eyes. He was really tempted to push harder on the wound just to make Jared flinch, that’s how much this bothered him, but he didn’t. Because he loved the idiot.

“Yeah, right.” He scoffed, “But if it was my hand, we’d already be at the freakin’ ER.”

Jared opened his mouth to speak, but then abruptly closed it. Jensen nearly scoffed again.

“Yeah, exactly.” He sassed, shaking his head slightly as he reached for the alcohol, “I’m gonna-”

“Sterilize it. Yeah, I know how it works.” Jared cut him off, sounding incredibly bored and annoyed at the same time.

“I know you know, sweetheart .” He said the last word bitterly, smiling over widely and tightly, “And I also know that you know you need stitches. You’re too smart and went through too much schooling to be this dumb. Now, I know you won’t let me take you to the hospital, so the next best thing? Just shut up and let me take care of you.”

“Whatever you say, smart ass-AYE!” Jensen poured the alcohol over the wound while Jared was speaking, not allowing him to finish the remark. His boyfriend hissed and grumbled, “A little warning would be nice!”

“Hurts?” Jensen asked, already knowing the answer, as he put the bottle back down and went back to dabbing at the cut.

“Little bit.” Jared sighed, still sounding annoyed.

Jensen was incredibly tempted to say good , or karma’s a bitch , or that’s what you get … but… then he saw the tiniest shreds of fear and pain in Jared’s eyes and he deflated. The majority of his anger slipped away and he swallowed.

“Worst part’s over.” He said quietly, trying not to hold as much anger or annoyance in his tone, “Stay here while I get some supplies, okay?”

Jared just took a deep breath and eyed him for a moment before nodding. He looked so tired.

Jensen pressed a soft kiss to his hairline before getting up and going to the bathroom. He knew that Jared didn’t have bad intentions or want him to worry about him, but it was just so damn frustrating. He was a dick when he got this stubborn, and it tends to bring the worst out in Jensen, too.

He breathed in and out evenly as he gathered the gauze and medical tape from the first aid kit. He walked back out of the bathroom slowly and paused in the hallway when he saw Jared was still sitting at the table, but now he was staring down at his sliced open hand with a frown.

“Change your mind?” Jensen asked, raising a brow as he closed the distance between them and placed the supplies down on the table.

Jared sent him a look and Jensen huffed a laugh, “Yeah, didn’t think so.”

“I was just looking at it.” Jared mumbled like a grumpy toddler, “It’s not around any nerves or arteries. Barely a quarter of an inch deep. It’s my left hand, and since my next procedure isn’t until Monday, it will be fine. It will close up on it’s own in a few days, probably leave a scar. No long term damage. I can deal with the dressing myself, I’ve done it a million times, thanks though.”

Jensen stared at him for a moment.

“You know,” He sighed, reaching for Jared’s chin and gently guiding his head up so they could make eye contact, “You should put your doctor brain away for a minute and just let your boyfriend who loves you very much patch you up.”

Jared’s shoulders visibly relaxed and his eyes softened slightly. He took a deep breath and let it out.

“You’re right.” He said quietly, adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed, “I’m sorry. And I love you, too.”

Jensen couldn’t help but smile softly and then he sat down and went about putting the gauze and tape on Jared’s hand.

“If you put the tape around my thumb it won’t stop me from bend-”

Jensen sent Jared a hard, pointed look and his boyfriend shut up immediately and blushed. He whispered, “Sorry. Doctor brain off. Promise.”

Jensen continued bandaging up his palm until the dressing was on nice and tight. He pressed a kiss to the hand when he was finished.

“Kissing it better?” Jared asked with a playful smirk.

Jensen huffed a laugh and then winked, “No, it’ll take a few days to heal.”

Jared rolled his eyes and teased, “Oh, nice. Now who’s using doctor brain?”

Jensen laughed, smiling for a minute and then letting it go. The smile dropped and he breathed in deeply. He looked Jared in the eyes and tried to portray as much sincerity as he could when he spoke softly.

“You know it’s not because I don’t trust your judgement or anything like that, right? It’s just… I care about you, and I worry.”

Jared’s smile fell slightly, too, and he reached for Jensen’s hand with his free one. He squeezed it tightly and whispered back, “I know. And I appreciate that. I wish I could promise I wouldn’t do it anymore, but…”

“I know you can’t.” Jensen sighed, “But that’s okay. As long as you’re smart about it. No dying or getting badly injured, okay? I need you.”

Jared pulled him in by the back of the neck and pressed a small kiss to his lips.

“Promise.” He whispered against his mouth, and then they were kissing again.
