Snake in the Chestnut: Extra Credits

Summary:

This is small a collection of very short drabbles set either in Snake in the Chestnut continuity or those adjacent to it. An alternative ending for the story also masquerades as the fourth chapter.

Snake in the Chestnut was an old story of mine, one that I started writing in 2012, and never finished (until now). Five chapters had been written and a lot of ideas were plotted and discarded along the way, and then there were always other projects or stories that had my attention afterward. This Extra Credits section is what remains, salvaged or written years later, existing in some way apart from the main continuity.

More context will be given in each "chapter" notes. I will mention where in the potential timeline what extra content lies, too.

The timeline itself, if you're that type of curious, can be read in the fifth chapter.

Notes:

Read the main story (Snake in the Chestnut) for context.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Spoof: The Inheritance of the Founders

Summary:

Non-cannon Extra:
Harry Potter seeks the inheritance of the Four Founders of Hogwarts, hoping for a quick path to riches. Daphne remains sceptical.

Notes:

Read at least a chapter or two of the original story for this to make any sense.

When I sat down to plot out the whole time travel business for SitC, I wanted to subvert some popular tropes at the time. Having read a bunch of Harry's interactions with Gringotts, I figured I would have a throwaway scene where Harry goes to get more funding for the war effort, gets bogged down by bureaucracy and back luck. This is not that scene.

The original idea would have been comprised of two scenes, one would have had Harry brainstorming with Greengrass (and perhaps Hermione) about funding and money, lamenting that the Potter wealth is not enough to compete with the likes of Malfoy fortune long term. I have no idea how that scene would have worked out, as now you know as much as I had on it nine years ago.

I have decided to cut most of the financial aspects out even as in the 2012 version, and I don't regret keeping the SitC story clean of that bit of clutter. Whatever satisfaction the inheritance subplot would have bought to my heart it wouldn't have improved the main story.

Anyway, Harry (somehow, in a missing scene) learns about The Four Founders Inheritance having never been claimed. Instantly, warning bells sound in Daphne's mind, but she allows (?) for Harry to drag her to Gringotts, where they bring with them a vial of Karya's blood to have it tested (as per all the tropes).

The following joke drabble, is a potential imagining of how such meeting at Gringotts would go, even if it would never appear in the main story in a similar tone.

Chapter Text

Griptear Clawington pushed a pile of dusty paperwork towards Harry Potter. “Yes, Mr Potter,” Griptear growled out rudely. “The blood test of Karya Lily Potter does confirm her line to bear markings of all four founders. Gryffindor, Slytherin and Hufflepuff ancestry in the paternal line, and Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff in the maternal line.”

Harry glanced at Daphne, grinning. “Told you she was a descendant of all four,” he boasted, “My vision was correct.”

“This feels suspicious,” Daphne remained unconvinced, peering at the mountain of dust and parchment before them. “I know there’s branches of my family who married into some Gryffindor heavy lineages, too. Don’t you think there would have already been an inheritor for all four if there wasn’t for some trick?

“No trick,” Griptear hissed out, and dragged his long fingers on the table. “The Founders’ Inheritance remains unclaimed.”

“I think you shouldn't do it without a legislator on retainer,” Daphne cautioned.

“What are the assets?” Harry asked, grinning.

“Four vaults,” Griptear grumbled. “A deed to a plot of land in Scotland. Sign the paperwork if you want more information.”

“What are the debts?” Daphne jumped in.

“I cannot reveal credit information about an account without the express permission of its owners,” Gripear grimaced. “Why do you ask? Do you think the founders were paupers?”

“Not exactly,” Daphne replied. “What are your fees for recovering contents of the old accounts such as these?”

“Fair and precisely calculated to adhere to the peace treaties between our nations,,” Griptear spat out. “I am doing you a favor by even agreeing to meet with you,” he growled angrily. “Will you be signing the agreement or not? You paid only for one consultation, and the time is running out.”

“No,” Daphne said quickly, but she wasn’t fast enough.

“Yes,” Harry had said at the same time.

Daphne sighed. “Your head, Potter.”

“Excellent,” Griptear gripped into the first parchment, tearing it as he slid it towards Harry. “First signature here.”

Half an hour later, Harry was a proud regent for his underage daughter, the owner of the land Hogwarts was built on and an official heir to all of the Founders of Hogwarts.

He was also extremely, irreparably in debt to the Goblin nation.
