Work Text:
“Mr Wayne! Mr Wayne, come talk to the Gotham Gazette!” the reporter shouted from the side of the red carpet that led into the grand theatre.
Bruce didn't usually attend events for very long, due to his “work”, but tonight was very important and he was going to stick around for this. Y/N had a special hometown concert that night as the final stop of her nationwide tour, so Bruce set Dick, Jason, and Tim out on patrol in his place. Damian, however, was a complete mama’s boy when it came to his stepmother and insisted on attending.
“Good evening, Mr Wayne,” the reporter said to Bruce before looking down and noticing Damian. “Oh, and young Mr Wayne. Are the two of you excited about the show tonight?”
“We certainly are,” Bruce said cheerfully, his usual playboy facade left at home. “We’ve been waiting an eternity for Y/N to come home so greeting her here seemed like a good idea.”
“How sweet!” the reporter cooed. “Y/N is so lucky to have a husband like you.”
“I’m the lucky one,” Bruce said, noticing Damian rolling his eyes.
“And how about you, young sir?” the reporter asked Damian, crouching down slightly to angle their phone so they could record his voice better. “Are you excited to see your mom perform?”
“Yes, I am,” Damian said bluntly. He never was one for interviews but it was an unfortunate part of being his father's son that he couldn't escape forever.
“Oh, well, I’m glad to hear that,” the reporter said, taken aback by the boy’s brief answer. There wasn’t much point in trying to interview him, so they turned their attention back to Bruce.
“So, Mr Wayne, we don’t see you at music events very often, so I must ask, who is your favourite band or artist?”
“Well, my wife, of course,” Bruce said shyly, a soft blush creeping across his face.
“That’s so sweet!” the reporter said, placing a hand over their heart. “The two of you are such a power couple, you’re so supportive of one another!”
Damian rolled his eyes once again, trying to hold his tongue so that he wouldn’t make a biting comment.
“Yes, well, I knew Y/N was an incredible singer back when we were kids and we’re glad to see her achieve her dreams,” Bruce said as he placed a hand on Damian’s shoulder, silently reminding him to behave himself.
“I’ll let you get inside, enjoy the show!” the reporter said, moving to the side to let the two Waynes into the theatre.
The show went off without a hitch. Y/N was in perfect voice, capturing the crowd so hung onto every note that came out of her mouth. Bruce had attended as many of Y/N’s concerts as he could in the past and was always hypnotised by her singing, but seeing how Damian reacted warmed his heart. The boy had heard Y/N sing at home while she was doing menial tasks or when she comforted him while he was sick, but that was nothing compared to seeing his mama up on the stage and commanding the audience with her music.
After Y/N had completed her encore and thanked the audience for coming, Bruce and Damian headed backstage to congratulate her on her performance.
“Dami!” Y/N called as she saw her stepson making his way through the crew. He shoved his way past the roadies and launched himself into a hug, almost knocking the wind out of her as he wrapped his arms around her. “Okay, okay, I missed you too! Did you enjoy the show?”
“You were amazing, Mama,” Damian said as he lifted his face out of the sequins that lined Y/N’s dress.
“Glad to hear, honey,” Y/N said, ruffling Damian’s hair. She looked up from the boy to see Bruce making his way towards them, squeezing past the roadies instead of barging through as his impatient son had. “And did you enjoy the show?”
“I enjoy all of your shows, darling,” he said before bending down slightly to kiss her on the cheek. Even in six-inch heels, she was tiny compared to him.
“It’s a little loud out here and my feet are killing me,” Y/N said. “Come to my dressing room and we can talk properly.”
In the dressing room, Y/N threw herself into the chair in front of the illuminated mirror and took off her heels, unbuckling the straps and almost throwing them onto the floor before sighing in relief and wiggling her toes free.
“Y’know, there was a reporter outside who decided to interview us on the spot,” Bruce said as he watched Y/N in the mirror from his spot on the couch behind her.
“Oh yeah? What’d they ask you about?” she asked as she made a start on removing her makeup.
“The usual stuff: asking if we were excited for the show, saying that we’re a ‘power couple’, that sort of thing,” he responded.
“Sounds riveting,” Y/N said sarcastically. “Did you talk to them Dami?”
“I said as much as I felt like saying,” Damian scoffed. Y/N knew that Damian hated talking to the press and didn’t expect anything less from him.
“They asked who my favourite singer is,” Bruce added.
“Oh really? And who did you say?” Y/N asked, already knowing what the answer was.
“You, of course,” he said with a soft smile. Y/N laughed.
“You only said me because you don’t know any other singers, didn’t you?”
“Well, yes, but it is true, honey,” Bruce said. “Besides, I don’t need to keep up with today’s music when I have you to tell me what’s doing on.”
“Careful with how sweet you’re being, Bruce,” Y/N said, turning around in her seat to look at him properly. “We don’t want to make Damian sick.”
“Too late,” Damian said as he dug his father’s phone out of his pocket and left to go call Alfred to have the three of them picked up.
By the time they arrived back home at the manor, Y/N’s voice had taken on a soft rasp and her eyes felt heavy. As much as she loved her job and performing, it always took a toll on her afterwards. Thankfully, she was home to get a ton of well-deserved rest and relaxation and she didn’t plan on using her voice for the next two days.
She sighed as she sunk into the warm bath that Alfred had prepared for her and let her eyes drift closed. The water relaxed her tired muscles, easing them after two months of standing in heels almost every night for two hours.
“Want some company?” a deep voice asked her. She cracked her tired eyes opened and nodded before sitting up slightly to let Bruce join her in the tub. He quickly undressed, noticing Y/N’s eyes wandering over his body, and stepped into the water, drawing her body into his as he reclined back against the tub’s wall.
“I missed you,” she said huskily, forgetting that she intended to rest her voice.
“I missed you too,” he said as he ran his palms across her smooth skin. “I love knowing that you’re out on the road doing what you’ve always dreamed of, but nothing compares to having you home with me.”
“It’s not like you’re alone, you have Alfred and the boys,” Y/N said, melting into him as he touched her.
“I can’t take a bath with Alfred and the boys like this.”
“That’s true, it’d be weird if you did,” Y/N said with a chuckle before the two of them settled into a comfortable silence.
“Did you mean it?” Y/N asked Bruce after a while.
“Mean what?” he asked in response.
“When you told that reporter that I’m your favourite, did you mean it?”
“Of course I meant it, darling,” Bruce said softly. “You’re my favourite person in every category. I’d never lie about that just because it’s what some reporter wants to hear.”
Y/N moved around in his hold to face him, the water sloshing softly as she moved.
“You’re my favourite person too,” she whispered against his lips before kissing him tenderly. “I love touring, but I love you even more. ”
