Chapter Text
Despite the popular belief that he was solely committed to only the healthiest of possible meals due to his sophisticated taste, popular acai bowls were not Miles Edgeworth’s breakfast of choice. Frankly it was the first time he had tried this fruity dish, sitting in front of a happily smiling Trucy Wright.
“So, do you like it Uncle Miles?” she had started to call him that a few years prior but he still felt the same warmth each time he heard himself being addressed so familiarly as ‘Uncle’. It sparked a nice feeling of belonging.
“It’s… rather fruity.” He replied, taking another spoonful in his mouth, “but it is quite tasty. Thank you for convincing me to try it, Trucy.”
“You’re welcome!” the young girl smiled again, brighter than the sun itself in that moment.
“I’m happy there’s at least one person around who appreciates Truce’s tastes. Because I’m surely not the person for the job.” Watching their exchange from behind his cup of coffee, Phoenix Wright sighed quietly, “smoothies, especially in a bowl, were never my kind of food.”
“Ow, you just didn’t find the one you’d like Daddy. Wanna try mine? It has strawberries and you like strawberries.” Trucy pointed out, her smile remaining unflagging.
Phoenix shook his head. “Thank you Truce, but I’m fine with my… fancy boiled eggs.”
“It’s Eggs Benedict, Wright.” Edgeworth corrected, briefly glancing at him. He knew for a fact that Phoenix’s daughter had made him watch every season of Master Chef so that there was no way he would not know such a popular dish.
“Yeah, whatever. They are tasty, that’s what I meant.”
Miles just rolled his eyes at that. The three of them were sitting at the nice café near the district courthouse enjoying their breakfast together before Wright’s newest trial. One of Edgeworth’s old acquaintances from Germany had been accused of murder during his vacation in their city. However, murdering his tour guide in a highly frequented tourist area was notably out of character for a famous, elderly German lawyer. He had no motive whatsoever and the victim was recently in the midst of a messy divorce so there were other potential suspects. The tour guide had cheated on his wife and lied to his mistress that he was a single man. Both women attempted to behave in the grieving attitude standard for heartbroken mourners, yet it was clear as day that they were furious with him.
Having examined the mess of a case himself Edgeworth immediately recommended his old acquaintance, Mr Weber, hire Wright as his defence attorney. Athena Cykes was busy with a case of her own so Trucy took it upon herself to help her father in the investigation. He was reluctant for her assistance, but as it was the Spring school break and she was not currently on tour he begrudgingly gave up. Edgeworth on the other hand just wanted to watch how the truth behind the murder unraveled and as he was not prosecuting the case, he was perfectly able to come to the court with the excuse of supervising his subordinates. Before the case began for the day he decided he might as well grab a pleasant breakfast with his closest friend and daughter.
“You assigned Blackquill to the case, am I right?” Phoenix asked, briefly looking up from his plate.
“Surely Wright you fully understand that discussing the case with you would be a conflict of interest.” Edgeworth replied plainly, meeting those bright blue eyes and holding Phoenix’s questioning gaze.
“It’s not classified information if it’s in the case files.” Phoenix complained, rolling his eyes.
“Then why are you asking?” the prosecutor raised both eyebrows, seeking an explanation.
“Um… to clarify? I don’t know. I just wanted to break this silence and talk about something.” The defence attorney shrugged awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck as he often did in court. Was he uncomfortable? It was not like this was their first meal out together. It had been a while since their last public outing. Miles recalled that they had not met each other outside of work since the New Year party. Now in the beginnings of March, three months had fled on by in the blink of an eye.
Obviously, as they had become good friends, they called each other weekly, sometimes daily. Since Phoenix finally obtained a smartphone as a birthday gift from his daughter last year the two attorneys had began exchanging messages and photos privately as well as in family and friend group chats with Larry, Maya and many others. They visited each other in their offices when they could but those meetings were mostly work related. They stumbled upon each other occasionally in other places but either one of the two professionals were always too busy to converse for long. Once or twice Edgeworth had driven Trucy to her performances but could not stay to watch them due to his work commitments. Now Edgeworth remembered further, the last three months had been predictably busy. Thankfully because of their other forms of communication he did not feel as separated from the other man as he had before.
“Wright…” he wanted to say something to express that he acknowledged the prolonged pause in their friendly meet ups when Trucy suddenly clapped her hands.
“Oh! I remembered something interesting!” Both men turned their attentions to her curiously. “The acai berry that we’re eating comes from the acai palm tree. But the other name of these three is Euterpe.” She paused as if to add dramatic effect, but the name of said three spoke nothing to Miles Edgeworth and from the lack of response, Phoenix was equally if not more so unaware. “Euterpe is an ancient Greek muse of music!” Trucy informed.
It was a rather peculiar fact that Edgeworth was about to comment on when Phoenix abruptly started choking on his coffee.
“Are you alright?” Edgeworth stood up from his seat to assist him. Phoenix waved his hands, clearing his throat of the liquid.
“Y-yeah… I just…” he coughed one more time. His cheeks were red, supposedly from choking. “I’m okay. Trucy, dear, why did you remember that so suddenly?” he asked his daughter.
“Oh, I don’t know Daddy.” Her sweet smile remained unbudging, though there was a glint of mischief in her eyes. Was there some kind of inside joke between the two relating to her comment that Edgeworth did not know? Should he know of it? Should he ask them to explain?
The chief prosecutor rarely found himself feeling any kind of uncertainty but when he did it almost always involved Phoenix Wright in one way or another.
“Is the fact even real or did you just want to make fun of me, my Sunshine?” despite his kind words Phoenix glared at his daughter. His question gave Edgeworth something to do, as he investigated it for himself using his phone.
“Hmm. Wikipedia says that she is correct, Wright.” Edgeworth stated, showing the relevant article to his friend about the Euterpe plant on his phone. While he did not understand the joke he could still probe into it and fact check for himself.
“I’m always Wright!” Trucy was overly proud of the overused joke this time. “See, no lies Daddy.” She practically beamed as if she had formulated a new magic trick for her act. “So, do you like breakfast of the ‘muses’, Uncle Edgeworth?”
“Well, if you want to play off that name that it’s more of a breakfast made… from muses?” Miles took off his glasses to wipe down while he pondered, “but I’m not an artist, so I do not have anything to do with muses. Frankly, I am more familiar with Themis.”
“Yeah, the personification of law. I know about her, but that’s not as interesting as muses. By the way, Daddy said you know how to play piano and Euterpe is a muse of music. So, how do you find your muse breakfast?” Edgeworth could grasp what Trucy was trying to convey but—
“Trucy.” As Phoenix warned his daughter about something it struck the prosecutor what this was all about.
“…Did you… did you make a joke about how your father cannot play piano for the life of him and that’s why he could not enjoy this ‘muse’ food?” Edgeworth inquired, pointing a finger at the now grinning girl.
Confirming his suspicions, Trucy began laughing so hard she almost fell from her seat.
“Ugh.” Phoenix hid his flustered face in his palms.
“Somet-something like… Oh my god! Ha! Like that. But your comment is even funnier, Uncle Miles!” Trucy was struggling to speak as she teared up. Wiping the corners of her eyes with a napkin, she continued giggling. “I’m so sorry I made a scene.”
“I hope you are, young lady, or you’ll be in trouble.” Phoenix finally composed himself, lifting his head from his palms and giving his daughter the trademarked ‘Serious Dad’ look. From the prosecutor’s experiences with the two, it never worked. “Edgeworth decided to treat us with a nice meal, even though I told him that I can pay for us, and you’re…” he lost his train of thoughts.
“It’s fine, Wright. There’s no need to ground your daughter because of a joke based on simple observation.” Trucy basically snorted at Edgeworth’s remark.
“I wouldn’t ground her. I’d just forbid her from being my assistant in today’s trial.” Phoenix said in the calm manner of a man who had just caught a culprit red handed.
“Hey! No fair, Daddy! You said that I helped you a lot yesterday!” the young girl stopped laughing immediately, clearly worried she would be sent home in that instant.
“Yes, that and my unconditional love for you is the reason why I will still allow you to go there with me.” Phoenix smiled warmly at Trucy and she all but leapt into his open arms.
“I love you too Daddy!” Trucy hugged her dad close. “No more jokes about muses today. I promise.”
Miles Edgeworth watched them with a small but warm smile of his own. But every moment he spent looking at them was filled with yearning. What he wouldn’t give to be a part of that family. To hug them both so openly, to spend every morning like that. But if he broached his luck he might just lose it all. Even though he could not consider his feelings for Phoenix ‘brotherly’, he would accept the designated role of ‘Uncle’, treasuring the connection they had in that moment.
They thought that the true culprit was the wife. It turned out that both the wife and the mistress had plotted their revenge against the tour guide together. The trial ended in a single day thanks to the wife breaking down on the witness stand. She tried her hardest to blame everything on the defendant, but confronted by a court she faced the hard reality that she did not give her husband a lesson on cheating but killed the person she dedicated herself to. The mistress made a scene herself, trying to flee from the gallery. There were tears, there were screams, there was confetti in the air. Mr Weber, the defendant, expressed his gratitude to both Wright for defending him and Edgeworth for recommending the defence attorney to him. If he had been represented by any other lawyer he may have lost the case and been condemned of a crime he did not commit. Phoenix, armed with his bluffs, had saved another innocent from conviction.
“No cross-examination of the victim’s cat? You’re losing your touch, Wright.” Edgeworth teased after the trial, arriving in the defendant lobby to congratulate his friend on clearing Weber’s name.
“Ha ha, Edgeworth. My cross examination of that parrot saved your life.” Wright placed his hands on his waist, meeting the jest with a smile of his own. His unbuttoned jacket meant the palms of his hands rested on the light-blue waistcoat that fitting his frame so neatly. He was dressed nicely thanks to Edgeworth’s help with covering the costs of a professional tailor but Edgeworth still appreciated the look.
“And I will be forever grateful for it. But, if I’m being honest, in that moment I thought it was the end for me.” Edgeworth smiled warmly at the man who saved his life and changed the course of it.
Phoenix looked like he was about to say something in turn when they heard a familiar voice.
“Hey Boss!” Athena Cykes herself was bouncing toward them with Trucy right by her side. “I won my trial and I heard you won yours too!”
“I wonder who you heard that from.” Phoenix briefly hugged his daughter with one hand, the girl latching onto his waist. “So, he didn’t steal the statue?”
“Yeah! And guess what? It’s still in the museum! It’s just in the basement behind a fake wall. They planned to take it and sell it after the trial was over.” Athena explained.
“Obviously. ‘He was the only one with the car, how could anyone else have taken it?’ is not a valued argument if no one took it out of the building.” They chatted for a bit about that strange case involving a missing statue of the muse of… wait.
“Trucy, was Ms Cykes the reason for that comment at breakfast? It was the muse of music statue that went missing, after all.” Phoenix asked plainly.
How could the chief prosecutor have forgotten about that case? Especially as Klavier Gavin himself was interested in it (because it mentioned music) until this morning, when he unexpectedly messaged that he would be temporarily resigning immediately, forcing Edgeworth to give the case to Winston Payne. Perhaps he mostly thought about who was prosecuting it and not about the details of the trial itself.
“What?” Phoenix suddenly looked pale. “Athena, your case was about the muse… of… m-music? You didn’t tell me that.”
“Did it matter? A statue is a statue after all, but if you want to know it was the statue of one of the muses, Boss.” The younger attorney ogled them skeptically. Trucy covered her mouth, attempting not to laugh out loud. “I… I didn’t overlook something, did I?”
“No. I don’t think so. Truce, dear. A word.” Phoenix briefly gestured his head and headed to the other side of the room, his daughter following suit.
Whilst they chatted, Athena turned to Edgeworth. “I think I might’ve made prosecutor Payne cry. I’m sorry, Mr Edgeworth.” She offered an apologetic smile.
Edgeworth knew that both Athena and Phoenix’s other understudy Apollo Justice were slightly intimidated by him, despite the chief prosecutor being close friends with their mentor. He once briefly mentioned the fact to his therapist, when they had discussed the possibility of him expanding his social circle and who he would be okay with including in it. After a brief discussion of the matter they decided that the best way to proceed would be to bring the WAA members out of the work environment whenever possible but to remain considerate of every member’s comfort zones.
Thus since last year he had started paying occasional visits to their office and spending time with them when he was invited to participate in some group activities by Phoenix himself. Mostly it was being dragged along to one of Trucy’s shows or having lunch with the group somewhere they could afford. The chief prosecutor told himself that he did it to expand his circle and not to just spend more time with one specific defence attorney. He knew it was a lie because every time Phoenix invited him somewhere, adding ‘by the way, it’ll just be us, everyone else is busy, is that okay?’ he was more excited while replying with a simple ‘that’s fine’.
Still, he wanted to build a suitable connection with Phoenix’s subordinates but both of them still remained uncomfortable in some way around him. Maybe it was due to the lack of bonding over anything other than court and law. Justice was thrilled to discuss said topics at any time but he still behaved more openly toward everyone aside from Edgeworth. Cykes mostly discussed cases she was working on. Major law topics obviously bored her, as it became clear she was more interested in talking about psychology. Regrettably she was not someone Edgeworth was comfortable diving into that topic with, especially considering her uncanny abilities. Now Justice was out of the country working on his own, Athena seemed even more intimidated by the chief prosecutor than usual as she literally apologized to him for crushing Payne in court.
“It’s alright. I’m used to his breakdowns. It is nice to see you again, Ms Cykes.” He smirked, trying to appear as amicable as possible. Suddenly he thought that someone from the WAA might know more than him regarding a particular subject. “May I ask you one thing?”
"Yeah, we don't have open cases, so ask away. What is it?" the red haired girl smiled widely, waiting for his question.
"Is there some kind of inside joke about muses in the agency or between the Wrights?" he glanced over to where the father and daughter were still quietly talking away.
"About muses? There are jokes about cleaning the toilet or about calling wine 'grape juice' but muses of all things? I haven’t heard any jokes about that", the younger attorney scratched her head, a perplexed air about her, “now you’ve mention it I got to say it’s quite strange. I mean, Mr Wright’s reaction when we talked about the muse. I heard how he became like, really nervous. That’s new. Or we’ve never talked much about muses before. Why do you ask, Mr Edgeworth?”
"Oh, Trucy made a joke on the same theme this morning", the prosecutor exhaled a sigh, still unable to understand the situation. " I suppose it must be something between two of them".
"Hmm, seems quite possible if you ask me. They often refer to things I have no idea about. But something's odd", Athena paused to think while playing with her hair. "I usually try not to listen to Boss's emotions too much, because… ehem... rude. But now I concentrate a bit... wow, he's all over the place. He’s mostly feeling embarrassed".
"Yes, even lacking your impressive powers I also found he's quite uncomfortable with the topic of... muses", Edgeworth scowled, staring in the direction of their conversation topic.
"Maybe it's about how bad he is with piano? I only heard stories from Apollo but still, his lack of skill is infamous around our office", Athena chuckled and then shyly looked up at man beside her.
"I actually made the same assumption", he smirked at the red head and she beamed in response. Yes, bonding over making fun of Wright was a bit wrong but it worked sometimes with Trucy. “I'm glad you never heard him play. He might have damage your hearing and we can't have that".
The comment made her laugh loudly, drawing attention from people in the courthouse lobby, including both of the Wrights who quickly walked back to join them.
“What’re you laughing at?” Phoenix smiled at them then gestured to Edgeworth. “If you’re laughing at Edgeworth you’re playing a dangerous game, Athena.”
“No, Boss, we’re laughing at your complete lack of a sense of pitch.” Athena was still giggling, each word laced in amusement.
"I said I was happy that you never had a chance to endanger Ms Cykes's amazing abilities", Edgeworth smirked, noticing how Wright's face began warming up with pinkish color.
"Yeah, yeah, I can't play piano, we got the drift at breakfast already. No more music talk, I'm getting tired of repetitive jokes", Phoenix rolled his eyes, still obviously embarrassed. So all those jokes had to do with music after all. Trying to switch the subject, he asked, "Don't you have any other topic in mind?"
"I actually have! Boss, as we both won our cases today I thought how about we go out and celebrate?" the redhead started to bounce in place, followed swiftly by Trucy.
“What? We haven’t even been paid yet and you’re already in the mood to make me spend money?” Phoenix griped, putting a hand through his raven spikes. Despite his grouchy attitude, he did not appear entirely opposed to the idea.
“Daddy, a celebration sounds so good!” that was downright emotional manipulation. Phoenix rarely said ‘no’ to his beloved daughter and now she decided to use it to her advantage. For god knows what time that day another small, fond smile emerged on Miles Edgeworth’s face. As if she noticed his expression (and knowing her abilities, she might well have) the young magician looked to the prosecutor. “Maybe Uncle Miles wants to celebrate too! It was his friend you defended after all!” she beamed at both men. It was more flagrant manipulation on her part, that Cheshire cat smile urging them both to move mountains to please her.
“Mr Weber is more of an acquaintance than a friend…” Edgeworth murmured, searching for the right answer to the invitation and speaking the first thing that came to his mind. Of course he wanted to spend more time with Phoenix and his daughter. If it was for him to decide he would have spent the rest of his living days with them. However, sounding desperate about a simple after trial celebration would be strange for him. What would his therapist say in this instant? He needed to think quickly or…
"Hey, Truce, we already had breakfast together. Don't you think the Chief Prosecutor here has work to do?" Phoenix light-heartedly scolded his daughter and then shared a glance with Edgeworth. "Especially after two of his subordinates lost their cases.”
“…I actually took the day off.” Edgeworth confessed.
"Edgeworth you... A day off? You?" Wright stood dumbfounded and then began recalling all of the day’s events. "W-wait, then why you are in court?"
"I wanted to supervise this case and due to the possible conflict of interest I was sitting at the gallery not as a Chief Prosecutor but merely as a spectator.” Edgeworth informed, readjusting his glasses.
"You sure Weber isn't your friend? Taking a day, that's rare for you. You usually have a ton of paperwork nowadays.” Phoenix continued to eye him suspiciously.
Was Wright... cross-examining him and looking for a contradiction in his statements? He deduced he was still in his working mood. Edgeworth wanted to shake the man to his senses and say ‘you are my friend, that was an interesting case and as I can't legally prosecute it I wanted to watch you from the gallery. I took a day off for you, you idiot!’ He pointedly refrained from saying as such.
"I took some of my paperwork home with me", he answered, looking straight into those blue eyes. It was not a lie, in case Phoenix had his magatama on his person. He always took paperwork home.
"It's not a day off then, it's just a 'day of supervising a case and working from home' if there's no shorter name for that", Phoenix frowned immediately. He hated when Edgeworth overworked himself and was very, very vocal about it.
"Legally speaking it is a day off, I can do whatever I want.” He wanted to add; Make me don't want to work please, I'm really tired. He did not.
"So you're hanging out with us for the rest of the day then.” Phoenix smiled as if he knew. Maybe he did somehow know. Was magatama on him now? Sure it was. But Miles had not said a word of untruth... Maybe it wasn't magatama and the man's own knowledge of his friend. "If it's okay with you.” Phoenix added coyly. Obviously he would never put Edgeworth through anything he did not actually wish to participate in.
Miles' heart ached. Why was this man so... and why oh why was he straight.
If only...
"I think I don't have much of a choice.” The prosecutor smiled a little, looking at the eagerly waiting Trucy who all but jumped in excitement when he replied.
"Yay! Then it's settled! Time for Eldoon's Noodles!" the girls began jumping in excitement while Edgeworth’s stomach twisted further.
"Anything but that. I will gladly pay.” Edgeworth had multiple reasons for that reply, the first and foremost being that the last time they went to Eldoon’s Noodles he received a supplementary course of mild food poisoning. He also was the only member of whole party who got it so explaining that was not an option. Luckily, Phoenix was briefly informed by his text of his condition alongside a threat to sue Guy Eldoon.
"Yeah, I'll not in the mood for noodles.” the other man caught up with his inference quickly, aiding him and adding, "but you know you don't have to pay. We're not inviting you for money. Just tagging along is fine, we'll choose another place.”
"The court record provides ample evidence that you were afraid for the state of your wallet mere minutes ago. Additionally you both won your cases. So it would be my treat.” Edgeworth deadpanned, refusing to accept Phoenix’s dismissive reply. He began to think about what options would be to his companions’ liking. He needed to consider the huge possibility that some of Phoenix’s other acquaintances would tag along. Who knew when Maya and Pearl Fey would appear out of nowhere like they usually did at the mention of a free meal.
"Ugh, it will be to high end and fancy again..." putting his hands in his pants pockets Phoenix sighed and glanced at his pouting daughter. She would never decline a high-end meal. "Maybe we can order some takeout to our place, Truce? Edgeworth can choose whatever fancy food he likes that way.”
"A home party, what a great idea daddy!" Trucy began bouncing again, grabbing Athena's hands.
"Won't it be too cramped it your apartment?" Edgeworth scowled, remembering their last Christmas party when Phoenix’s residence suffered. The defence attorney also earned a noise complaint the next day from an irritated neighbour.
The man in question looked over their company. "Really? With only four people?"
"Uhm, actually Ema texted me that wanted to tag along... And Simon wanted to discuss something after the work..." Athena gave her boss an apologetic look while continuing to scroll through her phone.
"Yeah... it's getting crowded. Maybe the office would be better.” Phoenix hummed, obviously considering his options.
"Daddy!" the young magician exclaimed before anyone could answer. "My new props were delivered yesterday! There's nowhere to seat at the office beside Athena’s and your chair!"
"Shit.” The immoral word slipped through Phoenix's lips without thought.
"You're lucky the swear jar is at home.” The young girl glared at her father who rubbed back of his neck again nervously.
"Hmm, what about my apartment?" another voice suggested, earning a trio of perplexed looks. Did Edgeworth just offer to host the Wright Anything Agency celebration party in his home? Moreover with his own subordinates as possible attendants. Had he gone mad? He was not sure. The prosecutor blinked rapidly, trying to remain composed. He was only used to inviting Phoenix and Trucy to his place and that first invitation took a lot of preparation talk with his therapist. Perhaps he was truly overworked to the core to slip up so atypically.
“What about it? W-wait! You’re inviting us there?” Phoenix was looking him directly in his eyes as if searching for any sign of a stroke.
"Yes. You and Trucy have been there. It's quite spacious.” If mind and feelings failed you returned to basic logic. Basic logic told Miles Edgeworth that his apartment was the most comfortable option. Well, that escalated quickly.
"I know but..." when Edgeworth gave him a curious glance he succumbed. "It's a lot of people. If it's okay with you, Edgeworth, then-"
"Oh my god I want to see Pess! I missed her so much, Uncle Miles!" Before he could nod Trucy jumped straight into prosecutor's arms as if their group did not draw enough unneeded attention in the courthouse already.
"Truce!"
Despite Phoenix's worry the chief prosecutor lightly hugged the girl back. "She'll be happy to see you too.” Edgeworth smiled remembering his cute pet waiting for him at home. She loved company.
"Who's Pess?" questioned Athena curiously.
"My service dog", Edgeworth answered seriously as if he was boarding a plane while holding his puppy on a leash.
"Aww! You love dogs, Mr Edgeworth?" the flame haired girl sounded sincerely touched.
"She's a service-"
"Yes he does. He adopted a Pomeranian named Missile as a child", practically beaming, Phoenix interrupted him and started to share their childhood story.
Before prosecutor had a chance to response Mr Weber came to lobby and went to his still smiling attorney. After they chatted for a bit standing away from other people, the defendant came to firmly shake Edgeworth’s hand. He said something about how he owned both men his life, but Edgeworth thoughts tended to draw to the exchange that ended in him as a party host. Well, if it would be his apartment, then he could drink a bit and finally relax after three months of hard work.
They bide goodbye to Weber and walked to the parking lot deciding that they should order delivery from prosecutor's favorite Korean restaurant. Then, as if reading his friends thoughts again, Phoenix offered to buy some beer and sodju on their way.
Standing before Edgeworth's fancy red Mazda Athena sighed. "I'd really like to be a passenger in this fancy car but I can't. I’ve left mine elsewhere. The cost of parking here when trial isn’t in session is basically stealing.” The girl bit her lip, “is there anywhere I can park at your place while we celebrate, Mr Edgeworth?”
Miles nodded at the valid question, he respected that girl was thinking ahead. "There's underground parking in my apartment building. Usually there are enough place for guests to park as well as residents.” the man pulled out his phone, "I'll text you my address and the security code to open the gates, Ms Cykes. You just dial it in, it's automatic. I'll also inform security about your arrival.”
While he was explaining how to get to his apartment, Trucy was poking her father. "Daddy can I go with 'Thena? I wanted to discuss girly things with her.” she was putting on an angelic face.
"Okay. But Athena, drive carefully please.” Phoenix put on his dad face but it was working poorly today.
The young attorney smiled, looking over the red car and then winking at her boss. "Looking at Mr Edgeworth's sports car I think it's me who should remind you two to be careful.”
Phoenix chuckled at that. "That's fair. Someone does miss autobahn occasionally.” Edgeworth only rolled his eyes at the comment. But it was true, as well as the simple fact of defence attorney enjoyed a fast ride as well if not even more so being a passenger. Though he would never admit it.
When all questions with organizing their little party were over and arranged everyone went to their vehicles. Edgeworth found himself alone with Phoenix for the first time in months. The dark haired man was rambling about where to buy good alcohol on cheaper prices on their way but the prosecutor was not actually listening, finding himself calmed in the very presence of his company. He could pay for overpriced beer, if only they remained in each other’s company that evening. Lighting the ignition and pulling his car from the parking lot he agreed to go to the shop that Phoenix chose, putting the coordinates into his GPS navigator.
The defence attorney stretched his shoulders, leaning back into the seat. "Huh, it’s been kinda long since we were driving somewhere together, Edgeworth".
"I suppose so.” It was somewhat comforting knowing that Phoenix was as well aware of the time they did not spend together. "You're not the worst road companion.”
Phoenix made an exaggerated surprised face. "Did you simply missed my company, Edgeworth?" he half-joked.
You have no idea how much.
Not more than a month ago he had a talked about it with his therapist. That woman was never prying but obviously had her suspicions regarding how often Phoenix Wright had been brought up in their discussions. That time Miles Edgeworth decided that if he should talk to someone, then a person specifically trained to help people was best for it. He started his appointment with informing her he was gay and that he was considering how his coming out might affect the Prosecutors Office. It was easy. It was facts, logic, he could look at himself from a distant point of view at that moment. But slowly the theme changed to Phoenix yet again and his therapist gave him knowing glance.
It was harder then he anticipated. Luckily she was free for two additional hours after their usual time. The prosecutor rambled. He cried, breaking his soul to pieces. He told her how long he had held those feelings. How he could not get over Phoenix even though he had tried. He had some casual affairs with other men. He tried dating one time when agent Lang offered it but the relationship did not last long. Because he was not Phoenix.
Edgeworth brought up his father and how sad he was that he had no chance to talk to him about all those things. Von Karma also became a topic, especially his comments on relationships. His therapist provided a great support as she always would. After the prolonged appointment Edgeworth insisted on paying her triple price for every extra hour.
He slept for only three hours the night after this appointment. He was shivering as if he had a cold, afraid his usual nightmares may be triggered by it. He petted his dog and drank tea in his darkened, quiet kitchen. He could not even focus on checking his email or anything else. But by the morning he finally was more ready to face the truth, whatever it might be, than he ever was before.
Stopping at the red light the prosecutor looked over at raven-head sitting beside him. Being more honest would be good idea, he values honesty. "You are my best friend after all.” That was easier and harder then he anticipated at the same time. Words came out easy, waiting for a reply was like walking on shattered glass.
Phoenix stared at him wide-eyed but before either of them could say anything the next green light forced Edgeworth to direct his attention back to the road.
"I- I didn't know that you thought that way about me", Phoenix eventually started, something strange in his voice. Had he overstepped? It was not like he confessed anything that could make him uncomfortable. "You obviously my best friend too.” That was a literal wave of relief washing over Edgeworth’s body and soul. "I don't know if I ever made it clear before, but I didn't want to like... impose myself on you. Wow, that makes me happy that we're even, ha-ha. I didn’t expect to be so relieved.”
Looking over Edgeworth noticed that other man was wiping away loose tears. "Be reasonable, Wright. That's not such a big deal to cry over it.” he hummed but deep down he wanted to cry himself. Perhaps if he would confess his romantic feelings and got the same reciprocation he would tear up himself, but not over a mere 'friendship confession'.
"You know me, always a crybaby. Also my case is over and this conversation is over, and a lawyer can cry when it's all over.” Phoenix laughed deliberately, turning to face the window.
Edgeworth tsked a few times. "I thought that it meant crying over something heartbreaking or important.”
"Do you dare to imply an almost life-long friendship is not important enough for me to cry over a bit?" the man retorted, though did not sound offended in the slightest.
"I would never have chartered a private jet for someone not important, so don't doubt yourself, Wright", the driver replied in a matter-of-fact tone.
Phoenix's gazed drifted from the window. "Yeah... Wait. When you did that happen?"
Shit. In hospital I told him that I just happened to be in the city. Shit. Edgeworth tried to retain his composure. He had unintentionally stepped into a dangerous grounds.
"Well, when you fell from a burning bridge and Butz told me you were dead obviously.” That was the simple truth and the truth was all that mattered.
"Oh... You never told me.” Their eyes met. Phoenix’s gaze was strange, like he was inspecting the man beside him, searching for something. For clues. Or...
Edgeworth looked at the road ahead of them. The defence attorney had god damn magic rock on him. How could he have forgotten. The prosecutor needed to be careful with his words. There was very high chance of saying something wrong and for psyche locks to appear.
"I panicked. I charted a jet from Germany. It happed to be a good choice because you ended up requiring my assistance.” That statement was the blatant truth. The hardest part was why he lied to him that time. "I didn't want to cause you any more worry. You already suffered enough. And..." Edgeworth hesitated for a second. "As you happen to know in my twenties I was a lot more uptight with those kind of things.”
Why I did I word it that way? If he asks 'what kind of things' I'd be cornered. What would I even answer with? Another line about 'Unnecessary feelings' again?
He noticed that Phoenix nodded to that. "Yeah, you were. But you were a lot better by that time already.” He snorted as if remembering some kind of joke. "I still remember that after the Powers trial you said to me that I 'saddled you with unnecessary feelings'. Hope I'm not much of a burden now if we're best friends.”
"Even more of a burden sometimes if I'm being honest.” Edgeworth bickered back. Before Phoenix had a chance to reply he added, "But more often you are not. And I can't even count the amount of times you helped me. Just today you defended Weber..."
"It was my job. You helped me more by giving me the case. And you helped me first-"
"In grade school. That was in grade school Wright. Did that experience traumatized you so badly? Children can be rude but thanking me for the 'class trial' in your thirties is unbecoming for a grown-up man.” Edgeworth rolled his eyes. How many times had they spoke of it? He lost count years ago, but it was close to the number of times Phoenix showed his attorney badge to Gumshoe. Noticing parking near the designated shop they were headed to he pulled the car over.
"Hm, not so much as traumatized, more of inspired. No one had protected me like that before back then except my parents and you very passionate for an eight year old.” the ravenhead man answered, unbuckling his seatbelt. "Either way, don't roll your eyes at me. You started being sap first by saying that we’re besties.”
Opening his door and stepping outside in the warm sun Edgeworth knitted his brows. "Wright, if you will dare describe us with that word one more time I'm taking my words back.”
"As if I’d let you, Edgeworth!"
Clicking his tongue the prosecutor walked towards the small shop that Phoenix chose earlier. Both men once again took on a 'professional' attitude, acting as if the conversation in the car never happened. But Edgeworth noticed how confident Phoenix's smile had became. Was he really so insecure about their connection? Though if he was it was all prosecutor's fault.
Trying not to scowl gray-haired man adjusted his glasses. Looking for imported alcohol aisle they walked through the store until a loud irritated voice came out of nowhere.
"What do you mean by 'over' Stacy? I flew just for you and you're dumping me two days later? ‘I seemed nicer while we were long-distance?’ Well you too were nicer then! W-wait! That's not what I meant!"
"This voice... isn't it...?" Phoenix looked suspiciously.
Edgeworth had the same thought but hoped that they were wrong.
"Don't hang-up- Shit! Stacy... why?" With that no other than Larry Butz came from behind one of the shelves. He looked pretty sad but immediately noticed his friends and brightened up. "Nick? Edgey?! What are you doing here?"
Phoenix sighed profoundly. "Buying liquor obviously. But why are you here and not in Italy learning stuff?”
"I was dating this cute girl Stacy. We met online and had long-distant relationships for like, a whole month.” By Butz standards it might as well be a record. "I flew to spend some quality time with her, but she dumped me... Didn't you overhear our conversation just now?"
"We didn't mean to eavesdrop but I got the idea.” The defence attorney admitted, scratching the back of his neck.
Larry's shoulders dropped. "My luck is awful.” He looked over his friends. Edgeworth could not feel sorry for him even if he tried. Butz made all of his dates run away, many to other countries. Suddenly Larry looked at Phoenix as if having some kind of epiphany. "Bu~ut as you are buying some booze should I guess you are guys were more lucky?" He wiggled his eyebrows at them.
"Larry!" Phoenix's face flushed crimson at the comment and he shushed his friend. "No, we're just planning to celebrate the Agency’s successful work today. By the way, we should get going, Edgeworth. Trucy texted me that they are already at the bakery choosing the cupcakes they wanted.”
"Ohh, you're planning a friends and family party and you didn't invite me? Rude!” laughing, Butz followed the two man choosing beer.
"You are a grown man. Whining doesn't suit you.” Edgeworth soon grew irritated with their other childhood friend but it was only to be expected.
"We thought you were in Italy. And you're not a lawyer, why should we invite you?" Phoenix looked at soju Miles was holding in his hands. "Is it any good? I can't stand that stuff."
"It's the finest here. If we went to the winery of my choosing there would be a better options, but you decided on this particular shop.” The prosecutor informed, putting the alcohol in the cart.
"Guys, don't ignore me! My girlfriend just dumped me! Can I at least tag along with you?" Larry struggled to sound convincing. "And I had something to discuss with Nick about your plans.”
Edgeworth looked at the man he once called his friend. Larry Butz was obnoxious and all over the place since they were children. Even in adulthood the prosecutor could barely stand his company if Phoenix was not around. The grey haired man glanced at the raven-head but he only shrugged in response. "I don't know, it's up to you, Edgeworth.” The unspoken notion of 'it's your apartment after all' was left in the air.
"Edgey, we barely catch up! Aren't we friends?" Larry persisted.
"Nnghh". Memories of Larry testifying in his defense during the DL-6 retrial brought up the thought of acting friendly toward this obnoxious individual at least once. "Have it your way Larry Butz. But you should pay for this. It'll only be polite.” the prosecutor gestured at the cart. "It should not be too expensive as it was establishment of Wright’s choice".
"Hell yeah! Bros hanging out!"
He regretted it already.
"Hey, did you just call me cheap?" Phoenix tried acting offended by the inference.
"Aren't you?"
They continued bickering on their way to the cashier and all the way back to the car. Larry got there by bus so Edgeworth was forced to drive both of his friends. As if reminiscing on their childhood, said friends started fighting over front seat. When Butz tried bringing the topic of him driving the car the prosecutor put an end to it all and pushed Larry unceremoniously into the back seat. On their way to the apartment Phoenix made some stupid jokes about the alcohol staying in the trunk where a dead body once was.
Right before they arrived Trucy called telling them that they picked up Ema but that Blackquill would not come until later due to some issues with Taka. Edgeworth was silent but hoped that the bird did not ruin the other prosecutor’s paperwork yet again. He was the only person to whom his subordinate admitted those incidents. The magician cheered upon hearing that 'Uncle Larry' would be present. All things considered, the evening was going surprisingly well.
Picking up the alcohol the three men took the stairs to the flat that was on the third floor of an apartment building. Considering the underground parking it was realistically four flights of stairs, much to Larry's dismay. He could have taken elevator but for some reason stubbornly took stairs. Edgeworth was accustomed to Phoenix doing so. Butz's logic on the other hand was unexplainable to the prosecutor. Maybe this walking disaster had a good heart after all.
"Welcome.” Edgeworth said, opening his door and the next second a red coated sleepy sheltie dog walked to them. "Sorry for disturbing your sleep Pess.” The dog cheerfully wiggled her tail waking up bit by bit. "I hope you don't have an allergy to dogs, Butz.”
"Pess! I can finally see you not on my phone screen! Edgey takes such cute pics of you, girl.” Edgeworth indeed posted a lot of pictures and videos of his sheltie to their group chat. It was Trucy's advice to 'share a pic of an adorable animal if you don't know what to say'. It worked pretty well and saved Miles from a lot of uncomfortable topics. Larry opened his arms for the dog, but she went past him to Phoenix. "What up with all the girls dumping me today?" he grouched, pouting.
"She doesn't know you.” The prosecutor muttered while closing the door.
Meanwhile Phoenix slobbered over dog jumping excitingly around him. "Did you miss me Pess? Who's a good girl? You are! Oh yes you are!"
Edgeworth made a face to hide how adorable he found this entire situation. "If you continue that she'll expect a treat from you.”
"Aren't I myself a treat?"
The three man stopped what they were doing that instant. In the next second Larry burst out laughing. "Wow, Nick, feeling flirty? That what brings the girls to you huh.”
"Sh-shut up! I didn't mean... I meant Pess missed me I guess and wasn't I myself enough... it came out wrong!” Phoenix fumbled, standing up to his feet. His cheeks turned slightly pink. "Okay, forget it. I need to use the bathroom.”
Coughing profoundly Edgeworth waved to the direction of guest bathroom. "You know where it is. Make yourself at home.”
"Thanks.”
While Phoenix walked away the prosecutor scowled. If Larry wasn't around with his comments could Edgeworth flirt back? Could he have said something? Smile knowingly? Would their eyes meet intentionally after the comment, conveying the feelings he held so closely to his chest?
"Where should I put it, man?" Larry asked, picking up alcohol.
"I'll lead you to kitchen.” Edgeworth nodded to the right direction.
When Phoenix was back they opened a restaurants app and started picking the dishes. Shortly after three overly enthusiastic girls arrived holding way too many cupcakes and some soda. Phoenix gave his daughter an unamused look, supposedly considering there being too many 'sugary' things on the table. Luckily for him and unluckily for Trucy, Edgeworth brought up few bottles of water from the fridge. The magician hugged her other 'uncle' as they shared some news with each other. Finalizing their order, they decided to wait for the food to arrive in the large living area. His dining area was actually right behind the sofa so when the food would arrive everyone could easily relocate. Soon the television was on and Larry's phone was connected to the newly downloaded youtube app. He showed some footages of Uffizi when Edgeworth received phone call from prosecutor Gavin.
"Excuse me for a moment.” Edgeworth gave a light bow and left his living room for the kitchen to speak privately. "Chief Prosecutor Edgeworth speaking.”
"Herr Edgeworth.” Gavin sighed loudly. "Two hours ago I was released on bail from the detention centre. I already left my temporarily resign form and report at your office but I would like to give you a copy personally and explain myself. Sorry for disturbing you on your day off but it's not a phone conversation and I believe it can't wait because paparazzi are following me.”
He sounded serious and tired so Edgeworth decided upon letting him in. "Should I send you my address prosecutor Gavin?"
"No sir, your secretary handled it to me already.” another deep sig, "Actually I'm on my way already. I believe it won't take more than fifteen minutes for me to arrive.”
Edgeworth clicked his tongue at that. "You should not be on your phone if you're driving, prosecutor..."
"I'm taking a cab actually. I can't drive my bike now if I'm honest.” Gavin sounded tired.
"Then I'll see you shortly, prosecutor Gavin.” He finalized the conversation, hanging up the phone. Something happened to one of his subordinates today and he had no clue what exactly it was. Maybe taking the day off was not his brightest idea.
"Edgeworth?"
A spiky haired head peeked through the door. Raising his brows the prosecutor looked back at his friend.
"Yes".
"You finished talking? Can I come in?" He sneaked in anyway, supposedly because he noticed that Edgeworth put his cell-phone away on the kitchen counter.
Edgeworth watched how Phoenix opened his crowded fridge. "Why of course. We were not discussing any classified information.”
"Oh, okay then. Larry and Ema want some beer already, I wanted to grab some. Also I didn't know it was Ema's vacation now.” Rambling again, he picked up few bottles. Being absolutely against drinking from anything rather than appropriate glassware, Edgeworth took four beer-mugs.
"Huh. I had no idea you owned those.” Phoenix let out small gasp.
In respond Edgeworth tsked few times. "I'm more a fan of fine wine as you know, but I enjoy beer occasionally, especially if it compliments food. And as you know I spent my adolescence in Germany, so, well, I crave German cuisine sometimes. Some dishes are better with beer..."
"Yeah, I do remember food in Munch being great with beer..." Phoenix recalled on one of their trips until- "Wait. Von Karma had let you drink beer?"
"Well he didn't exactly forbid it. They never served me anything of sorts the manor, but when I ate at other places I ordered alcohol sometimes. As it's legal to buy and consume wine and beer at sixteen without parents or custodian supervision, I had roughly four years to develop my tastes.” The man hummed, going to the living area. "Von Karma was out of country often so Franziska and I were left to our own devices. When he was around had no problem with it as I never was truly drunk nor did it affect my studies.”
"Even though it's legal he could... hm... should've thought he would not just be abusive but neglectful as well.”
Finally sitting at the two opposing white sofas the men proceeded with chatting while opening their beer. Unlike everyone else Edgeworth decided on refraining from drinking until the food arrived. Larry, still fascinated with the prosecutor’s TV chromecast, turned on some strange music. He tried flirting with Ema but she dismissed him easily, while Athena and Trucy, who cuddled on the couch with Pess, discussed something on topic of boardgames. Phoenix and Edgeworth chatted a bit about today's case until the door bell rang.
"It's too early for Simon to arrive.” Athena frowned.
"Prosecutor Gavin wanted to discuss his temporary reassignment with me personally.” Edgeworth informed, getting up to open the door.
"That's why he wasn't prosecuting my case today?" the redhead looked at the man, referring to the day’s case.
"What? You don't know? It's all over tabloids.” Detective Sky frowned. "Gavin and his band members were arrested today.”
Not wanting to learn everything from gossip Miles sighed and walked to the front door.
"Wait, are Gavinners are back?" Trucy’s squeal followed by dog barks were heard through the apartment. The chief prosecutor opened the front door and was immediately met with the sight of an extremely upset Klavier Gavin.
"Guten Tag Herr Edgeworth,” he barely managed. His usually smugly demeanor made a room for a gloomy expression. "Sorry I had to withdraw you from your day off but here's copy of my report.” He hold out some papers, "Please ask away about any details.”
"Please come in, I would refrain from talking by the door.” Edgeworth gestured inside, while opening the first page of the document.
Briefly looking through he noted everything he needed. "Apprehended at the backroom of music rehearsal facilities with a significant amount of illegal drugs in their possession.” "Authorities were informed by Klavier Gavin", "Fight between musicians lead to Klavier Gavin being arrested as well", "Requires full investigation on who exactly was in possession on said drugs and if they were distributing them to other people", "Only two band members were in intoxicated when police arrived".
Edgeworth looked up at his subordinate and then back at the document. The illegal drugs listed in the report were synthetic, never used for recreational or medical purposes. They were highly addictive and taking them could easy lead to permanent health damage. Obtaining those drugs was not an easy feat, selling them was clearly illegal and the chief prosecutor could have listed a hundred of reasons why the Klavier Gavin he knew would never possess or use them.
"I don't know who is a bigger idiot in this situation.” Klavier said suddenly, "Me for wanting to play music again and believing those guys or them for taking that shit for 'inspiration' and 'extra cash' when their 'leader' is a known prosecutor.” The sardonic smile he pulled was a bitter one.
"Having passion for music is not a crime. Distributing this,” Edgeworth pointed at the name of the drug, "is a crime. You are not an idiot prosecutor Gavin, but you may be unlucky in some regard. If your band members wanted to relax there are plenty of legal ways to do it. We'll have your trial as soon as possible and prove you not guilty. But you do understand that you'll be prosecuted by someone from out of state?"
"Yes, that's obvious... Thanks, Herr Edgeworth, for believing in me. You are an amazing chief.” He smiled slightly more brightly but it was clear something still bothered him. Then he awed at something. "Herr Wright! Haven't thought I'd see you here. Guten Tag".
"Hello, Klavier.” Outside of work environment Phoenix almost always addressed prosecutor by his first name as if to separate him from his brother. "Ema told us what happened. Or media's position on what happened.”
"I- I haven't had a chance to read-"
"Drue Merr said you had a fight about music the other day and you were the one who brought that shit to 'make them play with more passion' and told them to sell it to buy more expansive instruments. That’s what the news dropped about half an hour ago.” As the defence attorney spoke Gavin cursed in German. "I personally believe you're innocent and for some reason he is trying to frame you. I think you need a lawyer to defend you.”
"Herr Wright?"
The chief prosecutor, who was still reading the file while Phoenix spoke finally raised his eyes. Phoenix was still wearing his characteristic navy suit, he had not manage to ditch the jacket and his attorney badge was bright as ever on his lapel. Blue eyes were filled with determination and a confident smug was playing upon his lips. Edgeworth’s heart took a leap and nearly stopped. This was the version of Phoenix that always shined brightly in his eyes and filled him with love.
"I can't..." Gavin flinched as if he had been hit. "I got you disbarred..."
"Yeah, and I like to make friends by defeating people in court. I think your reconciliation was taking too long, Klavier Gavin.” Phoenix beamed at the man in front of him. "And if you want to bring that situation I have to correct you - you know who played us both.”
"I... It would be an honour for me to be defended by you, herr Wright.” Smiling at each other they shook hands. "Consider yourself hired. And I'll pay! In advance! I won't take nien for an answer.”
"I don't speak German but-"
"I have enough money, despite what tabloids suggest, believe me!" Finally Klavier regained at least some of his confidence. "Well, that solves at least one problem.”
"As your superior I can say that I believe you're innocent and can promise to keep your office your's until you return after the trial.” Edgeworth closed the file and gave it back to Gavin. "You have the best defense attorney in the state if not in country, what other problems may bother you?"
"Wow, Edgeworth, don't praise me so much, I'll think you're sick or something!" Phoenix chuckled. Was that a blush on his cheeks?
"Don't get used to it Wright.”
"Oh, I would never.” He smiled again. Shaking his head, he returned his full attentions to the blond man standing in front of them. "So, what are those other problems that bother my client?"
"First of all, I want to have couple of drinks, but going to the bar now is not an option and I hate drinking alone. Reminds me of... bad times,” while Klavier chewed his lips the men exchanged glances. Phoenix clearly wanted to invite him to join their celebration but could not because it wasn't his house. "Also I'm afraid I could get pretty drunk alone in my... Current condition? And post something on social media that I might regret after.”
"We can't have that!" the ravenhead almost shouted, bringing out his attorney side.
Understanding if he did not do something Phoenix would drop everything and go to Klavier's house to supervise him Edgeworth stated, "We are actually having a celebration of sorts here today. We bought beer and soju for the occasion but I have a collection of wine and some whiskey if that’s more to your tastes.” Edgeworth was ready to invite Gavin from the beginning but was not sure of Phoenix’s opinion on the matter. "It would be better if you join us. Prosecutor Blackquill will also be arriving later.”
"Oh, if you'll have me it'll be far better then drinking alone.” Gavin happily agreed.
"You're always welcome here.” Edgeworth was pleased with how his subordinate relaxed. He should invite Sebastian some time. Kay just intruded when she wanted, but he could invite her too.
Enlarging his social circle, huh...
"Are there any problems left?" Phoenix questioned light-heartedly but Klavier scrunched his nose. "Oh, there are.”
"Yeah, it's not so urgent, not really related to the accusations and kind of strange but-"
Abruptly the Steel Samurai main theme started playing. Phoenix and Edgeworth simultaneously checked their phones.
"Oh, it's the delivery!" Phoenix exclaimed. It was strange having the same tune. "Sorry, one sec. Hello. Yes, we did. Huh. Where? You can't? That would be smarter yeah, I'll be there in five minutes!" Hanging up he smiled apologetically. "There was a car accident nearby and our delivery guy is stuck there. I'll go pick up our food, it'll be faster than waiting for him to arrive. You'll tell me what's bothering you when I get back, ok?"
Klavier nodded, while Edgeworth took spare keys and put them in Phoenix’s hands. "So you won't need to ring the doorbell.”
"Thanks!"
With that Phoenix disappeared behind the door. Sighing Edgeworth gestured to the living room. "Make yourself at home, Gavin". When they came inside the first thing that welcomed them was Pess sniffing the new intruder. Following her were amused gasps of girls and Larry's unblinking stare.
"Klavier! Daddy said you were framed! I believe him. You would never..." Trucy was rambling, standing from her place on the couch.
Beside her Athena winced covering her ears. "Hello, Gavin. You sound very disturbed.”
"Sorry, Fräulein Cykes. Situation got to me, I suppose.” He smiled sadly, as if trying to compose himself inside. Curiously he looked at Larry. "I believe we haven't met before. I'm Klavier Gavin..."
"I know you. You're the prosecutor who got my friend disbarred", that mischievous remark made Klavier drop his head a bit and made Trucy shout 'Uncle Larry!' "But he's cool with it, and so am I then. Also you're band is pretty great! I'm Larry Butz, but far more widely known as Laurice Deauxnim!"
"Thank you and nice to meet you.” They shook hands. "As for my band it sadly exists more in a past tense. The people with whom I planned a short rehearsal before trial are temporary hired musicians. I missed the stage.”
"Boo-hoo, so Gavinners aren't back?” Trucy pouted after giving Klavier a brief hug.
"They never will be, the band name brings too many bad memories.” The young man sat down next to Larry.
"But you want to perform? If 'yes' I want a free ticket! Or better two, I'm sure sis'll tag along. It`ll be a compensation for all you put me through at work.” Ema smiled, trying to change topic to a more lighthearted one but it only brought Gavin's spirit more down.
"About that. I wanted… I actually still want to perform in a month but I'm not so sure if it'll be possible.” He chucked bitterly. "It's actually the last problem I promised to tell Herr Wright when he's back.”
"By the way! Where is Daddy? And have you agreed?" Trucy looked on knowingly. Edgeworth rolled his eyes. Of course this dramatic man had exclaimed that he'll defend Gavin right before everyone.
Miles Edgeworth, who brought his subordinate one more beer mug, finally returned to his seat. "Your father went out to get your dinner. And protector Gavin made the wise decision of hiring him.” Smirking at how girl squeaked with delight he looked back at Gavin. "But what might be the problem if you desire to perform?"
"Ugh. There are two actually, but merged into one.” Relaxing a bit blonde man decided to describe his current situation. "I booked a small concert hall for about two thousand people. We already sold a little less than half of tickets. And now I don't have drummer and second guitar player. Even if Herr Wright clears my name in record time I don't have time for audition! There's barely time to rehearse if I hire someone today. So if you happen to know skilled drummer and guitarist...?"
"Talk no more!" Exclaimed Butz.
If something smells...
A few things happened simultaneously. Larry started grinning and put something on his phone, while Trucy stood up and tried running in his direction but was met halfway by Pess jumping into her arms, blockading her from preventing what was about to transpire. Some generic pop-music that played on the TV youtube app stopped midway and new video started.
"Uncle Larry!" Trucy shouted again but it was already too late.
There was a small stage, presumably at some bar. Three people were on it - one by the keys, one drummer and one guitarist. The latter stood before mic front stage. As the entertainer announced the band as "Blue Bird" a camera zoomed in showing man's spiky raven hear. Even when he wore a black t-shirt and jeans it was unmistakably Phoenix Wright. The drummer and pianist who were Larry and Trucy started playing while Phoenix barely touched guitar strings. After few seconds he stepped forward and began to sing...
His singing voice was beautiful. Melodic words flowed from his lips never missing a note. Edgeworth fell transfixed, slowly falling onto the closest couch for the first time in his life discovering this side of Phoenix. The sad song suited the man so well. He sang it with passion, as if it meant a lot to him.
There’s nothing left, no fortress to defend
And tonight’s the night that we begin the end
O-oh
And with finishing with the guitar riff started. The camera changed to the one filming the guitarist's hands and then back. Phoenix strummed his guitar strings, glancing down, but it stopped soon followed by second verse.
You and I kept looking to transcend
The fact that I was breaking to your bend
But this is now and, sadly, that was then
And tonight’s the night that we begin the end
This time along with playing the riff Phoenix sang the chorus. His eyes were filled with poignant sorrow while the song flowed out word by word.
I tried, God knows, I tried
But there’s nothing you can do to change my mind
And I don’t enjoy to watch you crumble
I don’t enjoy to watch you cry
Make no mistake
Make no mistake
There was something familiar about Phoenix look. And Trucy looked younger. Could this record be from a couple of years ago?
"Oh, I just remembered, we played this shortly after that boy Apollo defended Nick in court!" Larry's voice resonated in the living room. "Nick is the one who chooses our songs and they are usually a bit different. Guess he had some baggage from that trial.”
Look me in the eyes, say that again
Blame me for the sorry state you’re in
Edgeworth looked back at people gathered in his apartment but he still heard the words sang in Phoenix’s voice. It started to make sense. This song was about...
Gavin sat in awe. "It's... about Kristoph isn't it?" He looked between Larry and Trucy. While song intensified the young girl slightly nodded, covering half of her face with hands. "It's rather fitting. I didn't know that Herr Wright..."
Stumbling on his words Klavier looked back at screen where song was coming to an end. Phoenix on video let go all of his feelings and the small crowd outside the camera view cheered. Stage Phoenix gave a small bow and suddenly grabbed the mic.
"Today we were in the mood for something sad and for an electric guitar. Had to rent it actually, huh. Glad you liked it!” the crowd cheered again and he smiled a bit. "Our beautiful pianist will leave us for today to join the audience, but we two will play one more song.” Trucy waved her hand leaving the stage. "The previous one was for someone who I'll hope I never have to see again. As for the next song..." Stage Phoenix paused and then looked, staring into the camera. "It is, as always, for my Muse.” The cheering intensified and Phoenix started playing before Larry this time.
Edgeworth’s deduction skills screamed at him, the pieces finally falling into place. Muse. Euterpe. Trucy's joke...
I know, you love the song but not the singer
I know, you’ve got me wrapped around your
I know, you want the sin without the sinner
I know
I know
Phoenix sang with even more feelings behind his voice. His look was intense, he grabbed the guitar harder and his hands flew across the strings as he played and the chorus started. Larry in the background drummed with all his might swinging his head.
Phoenix knew how to play guitar and was really skilled at it. He had a muse that inspired him to sing. Was in an amorous connection? Was it someone Edgeworth knew? His thoughts spiraled but he could barely look away. Then the second verse started.
I know, you cut me loose in contradiction
I know, I’m all wrapped up in sweet attrition
I know, it’s asking for your benediction
I know
I know
The word "contradiction" made something move in Edgeworth’s chest when he heard it in Phoenix's singing voice. He had heard it today multiple times in court, but it was something else hearing it like that. This was Phoenix’s own testimony.
"Can I hire you both? You're a really good drummer Herr Butz!” Gavin laughed but Edgeworth did not look back at him.
Larry chuckled in response. "Wait until you listen to next bridge!" As the chorus came to an end he exclaimed. "Here it comes!"
And it did. If Edgeworth thought Phoenix was with skillful with a guitar moments before that that thought now doubled. His guitar was basically singing in his hands and his hips rocked back and forth. By the end of guitar-bridge Larry drummed something unutterable.
"Yeah, I'm hiring both of you!" Gavin sounded ecstatic.
"You've got a deal!" Larry laughed.
All Edgeworth was capable of doing was staring fixedly at TV screen and Phoenix on stage.
Picking up food took more time then Phoenix expected. But now he was at the front door of Edgeworth apartment opening it himself. It was nice feeling that amount of trust. When he came inside he heard familiar guitar bridge coming out from the living room. Weird. He put bags down and took off his shoes. And then his own voice sang.
{I know, the past will catch you up as you run faster}
Line sounded as cruel joke. Forgetting about the food he rushed to the room from where Larry's laugh was heard. He stood dumbfound in the dining area while everyone was staring at the screen from the couches. Stage version of himself deliberately unplugged the guitar and played final riff like that while actual Phoenix was getting paler with each passing second. Crowd cheered and tape stopped. But before anyone else could say a word, Wright slammed his hands on the table and screamed.
"What the fuck?!"
