Work Text:
Ensign Number Five doesn’t speak to her right away.
After his cryo chamber fails, his cries of anguish are directed at himself — awakened mid-flight while his crewmates, frozen, sleep on.
Then comes the silence, disbelief and angered determination as he calculates his rations, avoiding starvation without jeopardizing the colony the crew will someday build.
When charts their course, sees in cold metric truth that he’ll grow old and die in the cold, lonely void of space decades short of their destination — then he speaks to her.
“I guess it’s just you and me now.”
Number Five and the Starship Delores.
