Work Text:
Lately, my mind hasn’t been focusing on the tasks I have in front of me. It was almost as if I’ve been in a constant daze, even more so this week. No matter how much I wanted to stay focused, it was as if this certain person kept me from doing just that. Everything about him is just so engrossing and I simply couldn’t get enough of it - even if I was only watching from afar.
“Jisung? Are you alright?” Hyunjin asked, snapping me away from my thoughts.
“Huh? Yeah, of course,” I said with an uneasy smile, my eyes focusing on the figure at the table by ours.
Lee Minho ran his fingers through his hair, his eyes trained on the paper that he’s been doodling on for the past thirty minutes. He swiped his tongue over his lips, the moisture glistening when the light hit them. His hand lowered from his hair and back to his paper, turning it to get to a blank spot. Fluffy brown locks fell onto his forehead and the urge to run my fingers through his silky hair became an insatiable itch.
Hyunjin turned around to see what I was looking at. “Minho?” He muttered, turning back to me. “You’re looking at Minho?”
An uncontrollable blush rose to my cheeks. “N-No, of course not, why would I be staring at him?” I asked, bringing my chin closer to my chest in a futile attempt to hide my red cheeks.
My best friend rolled his eyes at me, leaning closer to talk to me. “I can tell when you have a crush, Jisung.”
At the word “crush” my cheeks once again felt like they were on fire. “How did you know?” I whispered, glancing back to Minho discreetly.
“That,” Hyunjin stated.
I looked back at him once again. “What?”
He let out a long sigh, leaning back in his chair. “It’s because you’re always looking at him. It’s painfully obvious that you have a crush on him.”
“Really?” I asked, biting my lower lip nervously as I thought. I looked down at my paper, my assignment only halfway done. At this rate, it may be the first grade that I don’t get an A on.
“If you want I can help you get together with him,” Hyunjin suggested, but I shook my head vigorously.
“No, no way. He probably doesn’t even know me…” I frowned, rereading through a problem for what seemed like the hundredth time.
“That’s complete nonsense. I’m sure the whole school knows you, you’re like the nicest person ever,” Hyunjin retorted, going on with his rant. “Besides, if you don’t confess your feelings you’ll never know if he has a crush on you too.”
I let out a long sigh, my eyes naturally drawn to Minho. My heart throbbed in my chest as I stared at him. In my head, I imagined confessing to him and all of the possible responses I would receive. Most of them weren’t pretty, but the last one I imagined had me blushing all over again.
“What are you thinking about now?” Hyunjin interrupted my train of thought, making me jump.
“Nothing!” I went to grab my pencil again but it rolled off the table. I leaned down to get it, only for the chair to tip over and create a loud bang in the silent classroom. I felt everyone's eyes on me as I got up, picking up my chair and pencil. I was sitting back down when my eyes connected with Minho’s gaze. I couldn’t seem to look away - his gorgeous eyes seemed to pull me in.
“You okay?” Hyunjin asked, breaking the moment and causing me to look away for one second. When I looked back, Minho was starting to turn back to what he was doing before.
My heart thumped loudly in my chest as I placed my pencil on the table. “Yeah…” I muttered, going back to my work for the rest of the class period.
The rest of my day was similar to every other day - my thoughts revolved around Minho. Every time I saw him was a blessing, mostly when I saw him smiling. I wouldn’t mind looking at that stunning smile for the rest of my life.
After school, I normally studied in the library for an hour before heading home. I would always pass by the dance room where Minho practiced, and I tended to watch for several minutes before going on my way. The way his body moved with the music was entrancing and the cute moments in between songs made my day. Sometimes he would do a sudden adorable action that made me grin so much that my cheeks hurt. The dancing left a sheen of sweat glistening on his skin, making him even more attractive in my eyes.
As I passed by the dance room I went to peek in, only to realize it was empty. The smile on my face dropped, my heart faltering when I walked by quietly. I went to the entrance of the school, going outside the doors and staring at the rain pouring down in sheets.
My frown deepened, looking at the hazy skies created by the loudly pelting rain. I stayed under the cover of the school, looking to my right to see a familiar figure. When I looked closer I realized it was Minho.
Is this a sign that I should confess?
I softly trodded to Minho, greeting him nervously. “Hello.”
He looked away from the rain, pulling out his earbuds with an unreadable expression on his face. “Ah, hello.”
I shifted nervously, my hands fumbling with my phone. “How are you?”
He raised his eyebrows, stuffing his earbuds in his pockets and fully turning towards me. “And why are you asking that? We’ve never spoken before.”
I flinched slightly at his words, but the smile that rose on his face afterward was contagious. “I don’t know, it’s raining and we’re both trapped at school. Maybe this is fate?” I suggested, my usual confidence slowly coming back.
“Well, finally fate is deciding to step in since you won’t do anything without a push,” Minho joked with a smile.
“What do you mean?” I furrowed my eyebrows, confusion hitting me full force.
“Every day you always watch me dance but you never step in to say anything,” He said, staring right into my eyes. The close proximity was making my heart beat violently. I was even able to smell the Febreze he used as a perfume - what a funny guy.
My breath caught as my mind finally registered his words. “Wait, you knew?”
He laughed, the angelic sound making me smile. “Of course I knew, you were so obvious.”
I shifted my weight onto my right foot, shoving my hands into my hoodie pocket. We stood in awkward silence for what felt like the longest time until he broke it unexpectedly.
“Jisung, do you like me?” He asked, his heavy gaze causing a blush to rise on my cheeks.
My heart was beating so loudly that I could hear it in my ears. The palms of my hands were sweating from nerves and my breathing slightly picked up as I prepared myself to answer his question. “Yes, I like you very much,” I said, my voice coming out strong. It was the opposite of what I was actually feeling, though.
“Good, because I like you too,” Minho exclaimed with a smile. The unexpected response took me by surprise so much that a small squeak left my lips.
“Really?” I grinned widely, a jubilant laugh emerging from the depths of my heart. It felt like I was about to burst with the feeling of happiness.
“Yes!” He stepped closer to me, so close that I was able to feel his warm breath on my face. His lips were pink and luscious, pulled back in a constant broad smile. He pulled me into a warm hug and I rested my chin on his shoulder, the comforting embrace making me feel like I was on cloud nine.
“Jisung?” He mumbled, his voice so quiet that I was barely able to pick it up over the rain.
“Hmm?” I opened my eyes when he started to pull back from the hug.
“Nothing,” he smiled mischievously before suddenly pushing me into the pelting rain. I stumbled, regaining my balance as the rain violently hit my body and completely soaked me.
“Oh, no you don’t!” I yelled, grabbing his arm and forcefully pulling him in the rain with me. We both laughed, the sound slightly muffled under the loud torrent.
It was undeniably fate that brought us together.
