Work Text:
Jungkook’s body instantly tensed when he heard you sniffling somewhere in the small apartment. He had come home from work and was shutting the door when he heard the noise.
“Babe?” He questioned softly, kicking off his shoes hastily to get to you. His heart raced with the idea of you in pain.
He found you sat on the bed, the small trash can in the room was filled with used Kleenex. He sat next to you, a tattooed hand running up your legs that were curled to your body. Your nose was red, eyes puffy, and cheeks damp with tears.
He brushed the hair falling in your face as he leaned down to get a better look at you. You didn’t look up at him when he brought his face closer.
“I’m right here, baby,” he cooed delicately. “I’m right here.”
He didn’t bother asking what was wrong, knowing you would bring it up when you felt more composed. Right now, he simply wanted to ease your nerves, to stop the river of tears flowing down your soft cheeks.
“Sit on my lap, pretty girl,” he whispered and gently nudged your body toward his. You nodded meekly, lazily moving yourself to straddle his strong thighs. You snaked your arms under his arms and nuzzled your face in his chest. He smelled of his favorite laundry detergent and it made you feel at home.
Jungkook adjusted your body so you sat on him comfortably then wrapped his arms around your shaking body. He brought a hand to your head and tenderly petted it. He ignored the pang in his chest as he listened to your fading cries. It was never easy to hear you in such distress.
He rocked you both steadily, whispering how amazing you are and how much he loves you. That he was here for you and that it was okay to cry. Your body gradually relaxed in his arms, growing weak from having cried a good twenty minutes before Jungkook showed up.
You pulled away and Jungkook wiped the remaining tears from your face. He leaned in, pecking your lips lovingly before he stared at you. He tried not to look so worried, but it was hard when your face remained crestfallen.
“T-They told me my work wasn’t fitting,” you stuttered, eyes filling with more tears as you thought back to earlier at work. “They decided to go with another person’s work instead. W-which is fine, but I-” You hiccuped.
Jungkook swiped the tear that rolled down your face. He stayed silent as you spoke, gently running one hand up and down your back soothingly while he kept the other caressing your cheek.
“I spent four weeks on it. This other person spent one and suddenly theirs is so much better. A-and this person, they- They didn’t even try to hide how… They were gloating right in front of me.”
Jungkook’s eyes narrowed slightly as the small ball of fire lit in his chest. His movements on your back paused as he grew irritated at how this person treated you. It wasn’t until you spoke again that he pushed those feeling aside. Now wasn’t the time.
“I sound so silly, don’t I?” You laughed humorlessly. You shook your head and slumped against his chest. You felt embarrassed. So what your work didn’t get picked? So what the person was an asshole? It wasn’t the first time these things had happened to you. But something about this particular situation had your heart ripping. You weren’t entirely sure why. Your feelings were funny like that.
“Not at all,” Jungkook assured. “You worked extremely hard on that piece. I remember you showing me a draft of it. I could see how proud you were. And that person… They were a dick.”
You hummed in agreement at the last part.
“Jagiya,” Jungkook called out to you quietly, reeling you back to him. You peered up at him.
“They don’t compare to you. No one does.” Jungkook said firmly. He shook his head at the thought of someone hurting you. You were too kind, too fair, to deserve what happened. “You’re so hard-working. You put in your all and it shows in your work. Some people are just too blind to see that.”
You sniffled again, playing absentmindedly with the bottom of his shirt. You tried to believe his words, but it was difficult to when all you could think about was your failure. That maybe you weren’t as talented as you thought you were.
“You should’ve accidentally slipped their work in the shredder,” Jungkook mumbled under his breath.
“Jungkook,” you laughed weakly and pushed at his chest. He smiled at your small action, happy to see a shimmer of a smile.
“Hey, I said ‘accidentally’,” he tried to argue and you simply rolled your eyes.
Jungkook sat there for a moment and noticed for the first time that you were still in your work clothes. He lightly tapped your ass, hinting that he wanted you to get off. You obliged and sank onto the mattress.
He stood up, pressed a kiss to your forehead, then strode to the closet. He bypassed your clothes and took off one of his hoodies from a hanger. It was one of your favorites since it was soft on the inside. He remembered how you had said it felt like a bear was hugging you.
He tossed the hoodie over his shoulder and eased you onto your feet.
“Up,” he ordered gently as he started to tug your shirt up. You lifted your arms at his request, shaking slightly when your exposed skin was hit with the chilly air. He swiftly removed the rest of your clothing, leaving you in just your underwear. He slipped the hoodie over your frame.
“Better?” He asked. You nodded with a hint of a smile.
Jungkook grinned, grabbed your hand, and led you to the bed. He gestured for you to sit.
“I want you to be comfy,” he said and squeezed your hand. “I’ll take care of you. I’ll make you happy again.”
You gave him a small smile that had his heart fill with adoration. Even if it wasn’t your full smile, it still warmed his heart.
“Does hot cocoa sound good, baby?” He asked, knowing it was one of your favorite comfort drinks.
“Sounds great,” you murmured. Jungkook nodded and started making his way to the kitchen, however, one strong tug on his hand made him stop in his tracks. He looked back at you, head tilting to the side in confusion.
“I-I don’t want to be alone,” you reasoned and stood up. He chuckled softly and turned his back. He lowered himself, reaching backward and steading his position while he waited. You took the invitation happily. You leaped onto this broad back and wrapped your legs around his slender waist.
“Hold tightly, okay?” He said and cautiously let go of you. You tighten your told around him and watched as he walked you both to the kitchen.
You observed silently as he grabbed a glass and started making your drink. It was soothing to hear his steady breathing and the ripping of the hot cocoa packet in the quiet apartment. You peppered light kisses from his shoulder to his neck then back again. He hummed contently at your actions, never stopping his movements.
It was moments like these that had Jungkook solidify his love for you. He has always loved you, but more so in times like these.
It had him falling in love with you all over again.
