Chapter Text
"Vincent..."
I snapped out of my daydream when I heard her voice, I had zoned out looking at the party in front of us. Wanting the night to be over so I could sleep. I looked over at Olivia Gold, one of the most beautiful people at this party, the Mayor, the Leader, the one who is most the proud of me. She smiled, I didn't.
"Walk around some, make sure everyone is doing well. Tell them I'm grateful that they are here and if they need anything to let me know."
I just nodded, feeling my body move first and my mind to follow in a delay. I wanted to roll my eyes, I wanted to leave, to scream, to sleep.
When my eyes finally fell forwards to scan everyone, I mostly went to those by themselves. A few businessmen, an older women who had too many to drink, and another younger woman.
"Elizabeth." She mentions after our conversation.
"Ah." I say and smile, hope to not share a grimace. She was very pretty, wearing her hair up in blonde curls with a few strains hanging down. A red dress that complimented her skin, it fit her nicely. I know I've seen her somewhere around town, I just can't place it. I tested the waters and physically moved my hand to hers, lifting up to kiss her knuckles.
"It has been a pleasure. Like I mention previously, any trouble occurs let me or Mrs. Gold know." I look up to meet her eyes, ocean blue. Like shiny sea glass. Before my heart could melt I felt it frozen over again, an icy pit had formed in the back of my chest. Tonight was going to be longer then expected.
Time goes on, I repeat my speech to guests in the same tone I was taught to say. Mid-conversation with a older gentleman trying to convince me to play cards with him I felt the need to look at Olivia.
It was like the sea of people knew they'd all needed to part just so I could look at her.
Her head is tilted slightly upward, her hands are placed together relaxing on her dark blue dress. Her dark hair almost blends into the back ground. She looks even more stunning then before and it makes me want to barf. Staring at me she motions for me to come over, as if I had to choice to deny in the first place. I walk over not being able to look away.
When I finally get up to her, the restrictive presences she had dissolves but she still looked concerned. She takes my hand and leads me to an empty area.
"There's someone here that I don't recognize." I could tell the worry in her voice, but it was still sharp and clear. It was beautiful.
"She's not from the city either. She must be dealt with, do that for me."
As if I could deny anything I nodded and cleared my throat.
"It will be taken care of, trust me." I reply, it was in my own voice this time.
Her faced warmed and she placed and hand on my cheek.
"You are always my favorite Vincent. You do so much for me and for that I am always grateful. Thank you." She leaned in, and for a moment I wanted her. To feel the warmth her words trailed on, the close the gap between us. She was not worth it. I nodded my head again and pulled back, turning towards the crowd to find the mystery woman.
The first place I go to is the front entrance, I search a little book sign-in sheet from the guests:
...
Elizabeth Rosen
Victor Johnson
A̶n̶ Lilith Carter
Joel Williams
Confused, I look up to see if I can spot her right away. I recognize everyone on the list and in my line of site. Lilith Carter. Hmm.
"Excuse me." I say to one of nearest guests. Edward Hobbs, Olivia invites him often, He is a taller man. Not the best drunk but looks like he isn't that into it tonight. Maybe she had convince him to take it easy tonight.
"I'm looking for a woman who may look lost. I usually I'm good about meeting all the new people but I must have missed her." I smiled with my lips closed.
I caught him in a conversation with Maria, Olivia's right hand women. I'd like to say her and I are on the same page but we aren't. For the majority of the time I've known her she's unreadable. Some days it feel like she looks at me like she wants to connect somehow, and others, complies with what Olivia wants.
"Oh! I saw a strange looking woman going into one of the rented room on the east side, that's probably who you are looking for. She's blonde, and not dressed for a business ball. You can't miss her." He replies very excitedly, probably waiting to hear whatever gossip the other guests or Olivia is sharing. Maria and I lock eyes for a second before she looks back at Hobbs politely waiting to continue the conversation.
"Much appreciated." I response, slightly bow and walk off towards my destination.
