I missed you.

Summary:

Dazai made his days brighter. He deserves to know this. He also needed to understand how much Ranpo missed him last night. Dazai was only away for one night, but it was the first night since the beginning of their relationship that Ranpo had fallen asleep without his boyfriend beside him.

Notes:

i started this but i didn't know how to end it, I've also never written anything this short before, so I'm kind of nervous, but enjoy i guess?

Work Text:

“Osamu!”

Dazai wakes up to the sound of his boyfriend, and then he is playfully pounced on, causing a quiet groan to leave his mouth.

“Mmm…” he murmurs, still half asleep, burrowing his head into the pillow. He locks his eyes shut but can’t help be kept awake by the rustling of a blanket and his boyfriend crawling underneath it. Dazai was lying on his back, and Rampo lies on top of him, hugging him tightly.

Until recently, Dazai hadn’t become entirely comfortable with physical contact and affection. Ranpo had given him his space, of course, and only did what the other was happy with, but he also encouraged Dazai to step outside of his comfort zone once in a while and get the love he deserves.

Now Dazai was happy to let Ranpo do whatever he wanted, and almost nothing was out of bounds. The two of them were basically inseparable and did everything in their power to make sure they were safe and happy.

Ranpo holds him close, wrapping his arms around the taller man’s torso, so his cheek is squishing against Dazai’s uncovered back.

Another thing that had recently changed was that Dazai had stopped wearing his bandages around Ranpo, and now it was common to see him sleep shirtless and wear shorts. Ranpo couldn’t be happier with what their relationship was becoming, and every day he woke up glad to be alive and see his boyfriend.

Dazai made his days brighter. He deserves to know this. He also needed to understand how much Ranpo missed him last night. Dazai was only away for one night, but it was the first night since the beginning of their relationship that Ranpo had fallen asleep without his boyfriend beside him.

They had a nights worth of love and affection to make up for. Although Dazai was absolutely not a morning person and was probably still very tired from a busy night of work, Rampo couldn’t wait any longer, it felt unnatural trying not to be as close to his boyfriend as physically possible.

“I love you so much,” Ranpo smiles, placing a warm kiss on Dazai’s spine, cradling him. All he earns in return from the sleepy brunet is another groan, which the eldest giggles at. “I love you.”

Finally, Dazai chuckles, burying his head even deeper into the pillow. Rampo crawls up Dazai’s body, so his lips meet Dazai’s earlobe, and he begins kissing his scarred skin softly. He plants small and delicate kisses from his ear down and around to the nape of his neck, then around his shoulder blades, and down then down his spine.

The kisses stop when Ranpo is met with the band of Dazai’s pyjama bottoms, so he climbs back up to kiss what was accessible of his cheeks and neck. He doesn’t leave marks; they weren’t these types of kisses-
No, these kisses didn’t have an ounce of lust; this was pure admiration and devotion; Ranpo wanted to make his boyfriend have no doubt that Ranpo loved him.

“I love you,” Ranpo says once more, now placing his hands on each side of Dazai’s waist softly, causing the younger man to buck his hips slightly at the fight (Dazai was actually rather ticklish, which not a lot of people ever consider). Ranpo laughs, leaning over to whisper in his ear, “I’m glad you’re home, my love.”

Again, another sleepy groan from Dazai. Ranpo knows that this isn’t a groan to say leave me alone, no, this was simply a groan that says “I know what you’re saying, I know what you’re doing, and I am thankful, but I do not have the energy to reply right now.” which was understandable since Dazai didn’t get home until 4am this morning after a long case with Kunikida and Tanizaki. It was now 11am, and Ranpo had been awake for an hour or two, patiently waiting for his boyfriend to wake up.

But Ranpo was impatient and couldn’t bring himself to bear even another second without Dazai beside him. Now that he was with Dazai, he was happy.

“I missed you last night. I couldn’t fall asleep without you here,” Ranpo continues to speak after a few moments and goes back to laying on top of Dazai’s back, wrapping his arms around him.

It seemed like a blessing that Dazai was so much bigger than him. Not just in height- most people were taller than Ranpo, so he always expected to be the smallest in the relationship if he was with another man- but also Dazai was so much more muscular, and his shoulders were so much broader. Dazai was well built for someone who only ever did the bare minimum and lives off shellfish, but hey, Ranpo wasn’t complaining.

“The bed feels empty without you here. Please don’t ever leave me alone like that again-”

“-Mhm-”

“I know it’s technically not your fault, but still-”

“-mhm,-”

“I’d talk to Fukuzawa and Kunikida about it, but I don’t think they’ll take me very seriously.”

“Mhm.”

Ranpo takes in Dazai’s warmth, the warmth and scent he oh so missed after Dazai had been away for half a day.

“I didn’t even get to see you in the meeting. The desk felt empty without you there next to me. I didn’t know what to do with all of the space.”

“Mm,”

“Yeah, I ate the candy, obviously. But eating your favourite candy only makes me miss you more. I can’t help that I love you so much.”

Dazai huffs, reaching his hand out behind him in search of Ranpo, and he pulls Ranpo’s arm out from underneath him and holds his hand instead. Dazai rests his cheek on the back of Ranpo’s hand and snuggles into it, smiling.

“I’m not attached in a bad way, y’know. I just don’t get close to people easily- I find them annoying, most of the time- so when I find someone that I’m comfortable with and want to spend my precious time and thoughts on, I know that they’re definitely someone special and I shouldn’t take that for granted.”

Dazai looks up, eyes glancing over to Ranpo, and their gaze meet- for a few seconds, it’s quiet, and Ranpo is in complete awe with the sight in front of him,

Dazia’s deep, dark chocolatey brown eyes, his umber, wavy hair, thick dark eyebrows, henna coloured freckles that congregate around his nose, and his plump, dark pink lips.

Oh, how Ranpo wishes he could make all of Dazai’s dreams come true, give him endless gourmet meals, a comfortable, warm, safe place to live, as much love and affection as physically possible, and enough snacks to keep him forever satisfied. There wasn’t a single fraction of evil on Dazai. Ranpo trusted him from the moment he saw him. Ranpo could never love this man more, and he could never love anymore more.

They were going to be like this forever. They must.

Dazai smiles, and his cheeks begin to go rosy. Ranpo can see the top row of his well-kept teeth, Dazai’s brunet bed hair pointing off in random directions, and his eyes are still obviously sleepy.

Both of them giggle together before Dazai uses the back of Ranpo’s hand to rub his eyes, then he yawns.

“You’re happy today, Ranpo.”

“I’m always happy.” he insists, looking at the other man, “Especially when I’m with you.”

Again, Dazai laughs. “Why are you so sweet? What have you done?”

“I haven’t done anything! I’m just saying,” Ranpo tails off, and he yawns too, just like Dazai did a few moments prior. “I couldn’t sleep last night because I was not used to you not being beside me. Now I’m tired. So, if anything, I’m more angry than sweet.”

“Angry Ranpo,” Dazai hums, moving Ranpo off of him, and he pulls the more petite man to lay beside him, and they face each other. “Angry.”

“Yeah, angry.”

“Angry,” Dazai repeats, unable to stop smiling. Ranpo can’t stop grinning either, they’re two smiling idiots who are deeply in love.

“Yeah.”

“I’ll sleep beside you as much as I can, baby. Last night just got a little busy, that’s all, but it’s over now, and I have all day to make it up to you.”

“Yes, you better,” Ranpo leans over to kiss Dazai on the tip of his nose. “I hope you know that I missed you.”
