Now his best friend’s son sat in front of him, confessing to not thinking he will live to see himself become a man. Cangse and Changze must be furious in their graves as the sweet smiling son they raised endured pain because of a jealous woman and a cowardly man. Sighing, he did the only thing he could to make things right and accepted the boy’s wishes.

Chapter Text

“Sect Leader Jiang, I wish to leave the Yunmeng Jiang sect.”

Jiang Fengmian lifted his head in alarm, staring at the son of his heart, Wei Wuxian.

“A-xian, what is the meaning of this? Why do you want to leave all of a sudden? Are you not happy here?”

Wei Wuxian took a pained deep breath before answering. “No, not really.”

His answer hit Jiang Fengmian hard, making him breathless. Still, he needed to try to persuade him to stay. “What about A-cheng and A-Li? Do you not get along well with them?”

“Jiang Cheng does not treat me with respect, and Shijie...is kind.” That’s all he said on the subject, not elaborating nor slandering the Jiang siblings.

“Where would you even go once you left? It’ll be dangerous if you leave at your age. So why don’t you wait a few more years, when you turn 18 maybe? Then you can become a rogue cultivator like your parents.”

“Will I live to see that long?” Wei Wuxian whispered under his breath.

Jiang Fengmian felt cold at those words. He knew what the child in front of him meant. ‘Would he survive another one of Yu Ziyuan’s rages?’  After the Elders decided recently that Wei Wuxian would peak up the mantel of being Head Disciple instead of Jiang Cheng, his wife flew into a rage, looking for any and every excuse to whip the boy for daring to do better than her son. As always, Jiang Fengmian turned a blind eye to the beating, not wanting to ruin his family anymore by seemingly choosing sides. He always thought his children would be the ones to heal the scars left by their mother on Wei Wuxian, but just the concise way he spoke about them, he knows that wasn’t true. He will receive the berating from the Elders about losing such an outstanding talent because he couldnt get his wife under control, he will ignore the whispers of the disciples and the townspeople slandering him and his family, he will ignore Cangse and Changze’s words as he lay at night reminding him of his sins. Right now, he will help the boy pack for his journey, giving him medical supplies for his still-healing back, money to last him for a while, and letting him keep the clarity bell that belonged to his father before him.

At age 14, Wei Wuxian left Lotus Pier and never looked back.

Yu Ziyuan returned to her home after one of her many extended night hunts. As she walked the training grounds, the mood was somber and quiet. No sound was heard besides the swishing of swords, the crunching of gravel, and the instructor’s count. Looking over the disciples, she saw her son with a deep scowl on his face resembling her and the extra forced used to swing his sword. She tsked, thinking he was angry because of something that nuisance did. Looking around, she noticed a distance vibrant red ribbon was not among that group. Fury rose in her at the gall of that boy to dismiss his training to do something foolish. When she sees him, she’ll teach the brat a lesson! While stuck in her thoughts, Zidian sparked, breaking the disciples out of their concentration. Some looked at her warily, and others looked at her in disdain. She did not like their disrespect and hit a few of them with her whip, disrupting the entire lesson.

“I leave for a few weeks, and you all forget respect? I am the Lady of the sect; I am the sect leader, bow when you see me and fix those defiant eyes!”

The disciples bow low in greeting even those of her assault as they learn to lock their feelings into their hearts.

~~~
Dinner at the Jiang household that night was quiet, with tension bubbling underneath the surface. Jiang Cheng continued to sit with an angry scowl on his face; Jiang Yanli was more subdued than usual, Jiang Fengmian looked as if he was in mourning, and the brat Wei Wuxian still didn’t appear in front of her. Usually, she would be happy for the nuisance to be gone, but the way the entire sect was acting, you would think he’d be dead, and if he is dead, she doesn’t know why her family is upset about a mere servant.
Slamming her bowl down, she turned her poisonous words onto her family. “A-Cheng, stop playing with your food and eat properly, A-Li straighten up and quit slouching, Fengmian we are not in the middle of lotus season, there’s no reason for you to look this tired, and where is that insolent brat?!
Everything was quiet after her outburst, no one wanting to break the silence as she tapped her nails on the table, growing ever more impatient. Finally, Jiang Fengmian sighed before making eye contact with his wife. “A-xian chose to leave the sect.”
Disbelief was the first thing that she felt as her mouth opened in shock before humor took over, bubbling up into a full belly laugh, still going as she looked at her family’s sad faces. “What? Don’t tell me you all are SAD over an ungrateful gutter rat? I warned you all, didn’t I? That brat is nothing but trouble and only used Yunmeng Jiang for his selfish gain. This is your karma Fengmian, for spending years worried about that boy instead of your own son,” Yu Ziyuan declared, feeling vindicated that the sect’s prized disciple chose to run away instead of doing his duties like his arrogant parents. Who knows, one day, they might find his dead body in the woods just the same. Now at least Jiang Cheng will get the recognition he deserves as the sect heir.
“He only left because of you,” Jiang Fengmian said bitterly. Jiang Cheng and Jiang Yanli both put their heads down, not wanting to be in the middle of their parent’s argument. Jiang Yanli tightened her hold on her brother’s hand as she felt the anger radiating from her mother. This was the first time their father ever argued back with their mother, and with such hatred, the two were scared of what will happen.
“My fault?! If it weren’t for me, that little brat would be running around doing as he pleased! If he ran because of a couple of beatings, then he was weak and didn’t deserve to be our head disciple!”
“Oh? Is that why A-Cheng is so weak in comparison? Because you coddle him?”
“You dare blame me?! You?! The one who spent years searching for a street urchin and then only praised him while your son was falling behind?!”
“I accept my actions while you deflect like normal. You who is gone night hunting more than you stay in your home. When you are home, you spend most of your time watching and berating every move A-xian makes so you can punish him. You, who interrupts me whenever I do attempt to correct our son in one way or another. It’s almost as if you care more about A-xian than A-cheng as you claim I do.”
“HOW DARE YOU!” Yu Ziyuan screamed, standing up in a rage and knocking her table over. “You dare accuse me of ignoring my children to defend your bastard son?!”
“You’re still claiming A-Xian is my illegitimate son?” Jiang Fengmian sighed in exasperation. “Really, I should be asking you if A-Cheng is actually mine or not. You live separately away from the rest of us, you are barely here, and A-Cheng was barely three months old before you were leaving again. After all this time, and he’s more your son than mine.”
“Are you calling me a whore Jiang Fengmian?! Accusing me of laying with someone else because of that bitch and her son?! Is that how you’re going to remove A-Cheng from his rightful place as heir?!”
“Those that bark the loudest are hiding their own skeletons. You accuse me of cheating until the whole of Yunmeng thinks so, but I can’t do the same? Besides, you and I both know that if A-xian were my son, the elders would have snapped at the chance to make him official. You can always prove me wrong.”
“I don’t have to prove anything!”
“Unfortunately, I’m not giving you a choice. Starting tomorrow, you will be confined to Lotus Pier, and you will start doing your duties as the lady of the sect instead of pushing it off to A-Li. You will take control of A-Cheng’s training since you don’t like the way I do it, and I want monthly updates on his progress.”
“Jiang Fengmian! Who do you think you are?! I am also the sect leader of Lotus Pier. You can’t confine me here!”
“That was my mistake, giving you power which you do not deserve. I will be correcting that. As of tomorrow, you will become a proper mother, wife, and lady of the gentry. Anything I find unsatisfactory will be dealt with by punishment.”
Jiang Fengmian then stood up and walked out of the dining hall, their voices heard by those outside the dining hall. Soon, rumors will spread throughout the mundane and cultivation world about the treatment of the yunmeng disciples, Yu Ziyuan’s faithfulness and punishment, Jiang Cheng’s birth, and wistful rumors about a boy named Wei Wuxian.
~~~

Over the next few years, a change was gradually brought to the Yunmeng Jiang sect. Rarely were there shouting voices breaking the hustle and bustle of the merchants coming from Lotus Pier, and no longer were children scared about a lightning whip except one. Jiang Cheng regularly tasted the sting of Zidian on his back, feeling the electricity shooting up and down his body. As his mother was now relegated to control his training and studies, any wrongness was caught by her. His father, who he’s always wanted the attention of, is finally giving it, but he no longer wants it. The disappointment on his face whenever he gets less than a perfect score or the monthly checks to see if his core has grown has started to weigh heavy on him.

He was disappointed for both his parents, still fighting to catch up to the ghost that Wei Wuxian left behind. After one of his many beatings with Zidian, Jiang Wanyin laid in his sister’s lap, letting out the tears from the pain. “It’s all his fault. This is Wei Wuxian’s fault that our family is like this. I hate him. I hate him and i hope he’s dead somewhere!” he confessed in Jiang Yanli’s arms.

Jiang Yanli tried to reprimand him for wishing death on someone, but it was weak and meaningless. Something cold hardened in Jiang Yanli that day as she listened to her father question her brother’s parentage, accusing her mother of infidelity and then restricting her powers to create the tempered yet monstrous version of her today. Her mother, who wouldn’t dare raise her hands to her children, now uses Jiang Cheng as a whipping post, and after the loss of Yinzhu and Jinzhu, it has only gotten worse. She has to listen to the disciples be happy that her mother was restrained and how they no longer have to endure her attitude. The joy that her A-Cheng was now the outlet for her anger because he deserved it for his terrible attitude. The gossip in the cultivation world that Jiang Fengmian finally put his wife on a leash and turned her into a homemaker as she was supposed to be. A burning rage burned inside of her. Even though there was nothing she could do about she held onto that furry and pushed the blame onto the most accessible target; Wei Wuxian.

Now Jiang Yanli stood next to her parents on the docks of Lotus Pier as they sent off Jiang Cheng and a few other disciples to Gusu for the illustrious lectures in the Cloud Recesses. She was happy for her brother that he was able to get away for a whole year and be safe from his mother’s rage. However, she was also jealous that she couldnt go either. While her mother never raised her hand to her, Yu Ziyuan’s words were enough to kill a person, so you mostly hide in the safety of her father, ignoring the bitter feelings she felt about him as well. The boys were sent off with no considerable fanfare as Jiang Fengmian spoke softly, wanting them to do their best and learn a lot from Lan Qiren and Yu Ziyuan, warning them not to embarrass Yunmeng Jiang as there will be other sect heirs in attendance. Just when Jiang Cheng was about to board, Jiang Yanli stopped him, handing him pouches full of snacks for the trip and made sure he knew they were only for him. Yu Ziyuan wanted to say something but kept her mouth shut as she learned to do in public.

The boat left steadily, getting closer to Gusu and leaving Yunmeng behind.

Wei Wuxian POV

Chapter Text

Wei Wuxian left Lotus Pier packing the little belongings that he owned and were not the property of the Jiang sect. His notebooks with his many notes for talismans and other inventions, Suibian and his father’s clarity bell. He also had the money he earned during his time as a disciple, which was enhanced by the extra money Jiang Fengmian gave him as some sort of recompense for not doing anything to protect him. It left a bad taste in Wei Wuxian’s mouth, so he put the money in a separate pouch at the bottom of his bag. He would only use that money for emergencies; his purchases will be made with his own money and merit. He also had a pouch of medicines from the healers, enough for his still-healing back and any injuries he could get on his own.

Wandering through the streets of Yunmeng, saying his farewells to the surprise and happiness of the locals that he was leaving a toxic situation. Tearful goodbyes and arms full of trinkets and food later, Wei Wuxian finally left the borders of his once home. He had some good memories there, but the bad outweighed the good, and he would steer clear of Jiang's disciples as much as he could.

Wei Wuxian traveled mostly through small towns and villages to avoid the major sects and help the citizens, knowing they were too poor to afford help from the cultivation world. At first, the citizens were wary of trusting a young boy to help solve their problems, especially without a sect backing him. But, looking at his well-crafted sword, the citizens decided it wouldn't hurt to have him try, and Wei Wuxian came back successful every time. He built a reputation with the poorer citizens as a young daozhang traveling from town to town only requesting a warm meal and a place to sleep for payment. If the village couldn't spare the food, he would ask for someone to help sew the holes in his robes as his stitch work was subpar. To refill his wallet, Wei Wuxian would sell talismans in bigger towns, his own inventions, or his improved versions of the standard talismans. Eventually, he made a deal with a merchant who frequently traveled to Qinghe to give him a large supply in exchange for a large sum. Joy at having his inventions recognized by non-cultivators made him happy as he thought about them using the talismans to improve their quality of life.

During the first winter of his life as a rogue cultivator, Wei Wuxian traveled to a remote area when the wounds on his back started acting up. Rubbing his arms to keep the warmth in his thinner robes, he regretted not listening to the older man at the market about the winter storm. Yunmeng was a warm area, and their winters were mild; he was arrogant for thinking having his golden core would be enough in other areas. Stopping, he decided to start setting up camp and a fire before his scars tighten more and restrict his movement, a young boy who looked younger than him approached with a bow on his back.

“Young master, are you lost?” asked the new boy.

“Ah no, I’m just setting up camp before night falls.”

“This isn't a good spot for camping. The snow is about to start falling soon. Why don't you rest in my village? It’s nothing fancy, but you’ll be dry and warm.” the boy said, looking up at the dark clouds in the sky.

Wei Wuxian couldn't argue with such a nice offer and accepted, cleaning his supplies up swiftly. The faster he gets near a fire; the more his back will relax. Then, walking into step with the stranger, he thanked him for his kind offer.

“It’s no problem. My name is Wen Ning, Wen Qionglin.”

“I’m Wei Ying, courtesy Wei Wuxian! Nice to meet you!”

His first winter and Wei Wuxian was snowed in with the Dafan Wen’s, a branch family from the Qishan Wen sect that consisted of farmers and carpenters. The only cultivators in the village other than him are Wen Ning and his scary older sister Wen Qing. The first time he met her, she knew instantly something was wrong with him, forcing him to unrobe near the fire to stay warm so she could check his injuries. Seeing the scars across his back, her mouth flattened before commending him for taking good care of them on his own and his strong core that fought off the infection in places that he couldn't reach on his own. That was the first night of his stay.

During the months he stayed with the Wen’s, Wei Wuxian learned what a family is for the first time since his parents passed. Hunting and gathering with the uncles during the day, the gentle scoldings of Wen popo for his recklessness as she sewed him a thick winter robe to keep warm, learning medicine and creating new inventions under Wen Qing’s sharp words that had an underlayer of warmth and practicing the bow with the timid Wen Ning who was slowly becoming more confident under his attention. Wei Wuxian was happier than he was in months. Even though he got immense joy from helping the common people, he was a social person by nature, and traveling alone was dispiriting, but he was getting restless. Staying in one place after being on the move constantly was making him fidgety, so when the snow melted and the air turned warmer, he descended from the mountain with well wishes, gentle scoldings, a promise to keep in touch, and a stuffed qiankun pouch.

In the second year of Wei Wuxian’s life as a rogue cultivator, he met a pretty Lan disciple in pure white robes and a jade-like face. They ran across each other multiple times, and each time the boy was by himself. Wei Wuxian attempted to start a friendship with him against his own rules. He always made sure to stay clear of those from the great sects, but something about this boy drew him in. He seemed lonely, and well, Wei Wuxian was lonely as well most days, so why not try to brighten the other day, at least for a bit. He learned the boy in white was Lan Wangji, the second young master of Gusu Lan and one-half of the twin jades. He was shocked that a young master would be hunting by himself at such a young age and going out of his way to help the common people even when the mission was completed.

The two teens became companions, and Wei Wuxian was always excited to see the quiet young master. Lan Wangji didn't talk much, but it seemed after their second meeting he became used to Wei Wuxian’s ramblings. He even contributed to the conversation when it veered into cultivation and Wei Ying’s talismans. That was how Wei Wuxian obtained an invitation to visit the Cloud Recesses.

“Eh? Lan Zhan, are you sure?”

“Mm. Gusu Lan’s library is vast, and it might have the information you’re looking for. I will ask Uncle to grant you access to it.”

“But….isn't there a lot of rules there? What if I can’t follow all of them?”

“Wei Ying is capable. Plus, you are a guest; the rules will be more lenient.”

“Ah, Lan-er-gongzi has so much faith in this one! Hypothetically speaking, if I were to break the rules...I wouldn't be whipped, right?” Wei Wuxian asked nervously.

Lan Wangji frowned at the question, concerned for why his friend would ask that. Did the Lan sect have such a strict reputation to outsiders, or was it something else? “Those that break the rules are punished by copying lines either from the Lan precepts to familiarize themselves with it or other books that align with the lesson they should learn. If the rule breaker has repeated transgressions, they will get hit with the paddle. Whipping is only used in the case of treason or other such offenses,” Lan Wangji settled on saying as he watched the relief invade the others' eyes. He wanted to ask why he thought he would be whipped, but Wei Wuxian ran ahead, and when he spun around, long dark hair and a red ribbon catching the sun and a bright grin back on his face, Lan Wangji thought about asking another time.

“Lan Zhan, let’s go!”

~~~
Wei Wuxian has been at the Cloud Recesses for a few weeks now, and Lan Qiren doesn't know what to make of the boy. He was wary of letting him into his home, being that he was the menace of his teen years, Cangse Sanren’s son, but he was also the first friend that Wangji made so reluctantly he gave his permission. That same night in the quiet of his home, his nephew came to him and Xichen and voiced his concern about Wei Wuxian fearing being whipped for punishment. It stunned him and Xichen as they sat with wide eyes. Conflicting emotions flashed within him. The two he could identify first were outrage for thinking his sect would resort to something barbaric and then concern. Lan Qiren had a brief recollection that Wei Wuxian was taken into the Jiang sect after their leader spent so long looking for him, so why is he traveling as a rogue cultivator when he has barely reached the age of junior disciples instead of being protected in a sect? Lan Qiren and Cangse Sanren may not have been close, but he would keep an eye out on the boy during his time here, Lan Qiren thought.
So far, he hasn't noticed anything major. Wei Wuxian became fidgety when Lan Qiren was around, and he could see the restraint the boy exercised to control the volume of his voice and keep from running around. When he was in the library pavilion, he was studious and messy. Papers and books surrounded his workspace, but he bothered no one and cleaned up before he left. Wei Wuxian was a model guest student. The biggest change was in his nephew. Lan Wangji, when he wasn't busy with his own duties, followed Wei Wuxian around like a puppy. The two were often together, and Wangji had a lightness to his usual cool aura that was only diminished when Wei Wuxian decided to stay out longer during their night hunts while The second Jade had to return. Wei Wuxian would then come back with gifts from wherever he was as an apology before clinging on his arm for the rest of the day. Lan Qiren almost choked to death the first time he witnessed it, thinking the boy was violating his nephew's boundaries, but the slight uptick of Wangji’s lips had him frozen in place. When was the last time he saw his youngest nephew happy? Not since the death of his mother has he seen any emotion so obvious on his face. Lan Wangji’s change in behavior would not be obvious to outsiders. Still, to the rest of the Lan Sect, they were happy that their second young master had found a confidant, and it also helped that Wei Wuxian was charming and intelligent to the sect full of scholars. An unspoken agreement spread throughout the Lan sect to protect the two young boys' happiness at any cost.
With this new decree in his heart, Lan Qiren decided to create a relationship with Wei Wuxian. Lan Xichen has already been captured by the boy’s charm and says he would enjoy an intellectual discussion with him. So here, Lan Qiren was heading to the back of the library, where the teen regularly sat and sighed at sight. Truly, how did the boy work in such chaos, and how did his nephew tolerate it.
“Wei Wuxian.”
“Grandmaster Lan!” he said loudly even to his ears, not noticing anyone approaching him. He moved to stand up to greet him before Lan Qiren stopped him. “My nephews have spoken highly of your inventions, and I was intrigued. Would you tell me what you’re working on? I may be able to provide some insight or at the very least point you to some texts that may help.”
Wei Wuxian’s smile was radiant, only being rivaled by the glow of his eyes, the same look that had drawn him to Cangse originally and his brother to his wife. The Lan’s truly were cursed. Sitting down, he listened to Wei Wuxian speak about the “compass of evil” and the intricacies involved in its creation. He wanted to refine it to give a more accurate reading and could detect more high-level monsters, but at the moment, the common people to whom he has sold some of them to were just happy to have a general idea of the danger they faced. As he listened, Lan Qiren accidentally knocked over a sheet of paper in a messy scrawl that piqued his interest.
“What is this array for?”
“To increase fertility.”
Lan Qiren’s face turned red in indignation. Then, when he was about to scold Wei Wuxian for his shamelessness, the boy continued speaking, not looking at him.
“I traveled through many villages, and some farms have a hard time growing their crops. However, even when I check the soil for any signs of curses or resentful energy, nothing is there. With this talisman, I attempted to capture the natural energy in the surrounding area and divert it into the soil to increase the growth rate and quality. Winter isn't too far away now, so I want to finish this soon.”
Lan Qiren calmed down, listening to his explanation. This boy was truly his parents' child. Even though they only raised him for a few short years, Wei Wuxian embodies his parent’s ideals and morals even after the trials and tribulations he has faced. He was snapped out of his musings by silver eyes landing on him.
“Grandmaster Lan, why are you pink? Wait, what did you think the talisman was for? Don’t tell me you thought-” Wei Wuxian cut himself off as he started laughing at his expense. He really was his parents' child, Lan Qiren thought, shaking his head in exasperation before lowering his head to the sheet of paper that only years of being an educator have trained him to be able to read. They spent a few more sessions like that before something changed again.
Lan Qiren sat in his home attempting to meditate when he heard footsteps approaching his door. He sighed in annoyance at whoever the visitor once, except the knock never came. Instead, he listened to the person walk back and forth, stopping at moments before starting again. Impatience and the annoyance at being disturbed had Lan Qiren sliding the door open with a scowl on his face.
“Stop this bothersome pacing at once! There are other places for you to think!”
Wei Wuxian was stunned, frozen with his mouth wide open and eyes widened. He looked like how Lan Qiren felt, but he kept the scowl on his face.
“Grandmaster Lan! This one apologizes. I will let you continue with your evening.”
“You’ve already broken my meditation, so come on in and tell me whatever it is you have to say.”
Wei Wuxian hesitated at first before nodding and stiffly walked into the home. They sat in silence until the teen finished the fight within himself and built the courage to ask what was on his mind.
“Will...you tell me about my parents?” he asked in a small voice that didn't fit him.
Lan Qiren poured the both of them tea as he asked, “Did Jiang Fengmian not speak of them to you?” The first time he acknowledged he knew Wei Wuxian’s background before becoming a rogue cultivator.
A gasp left Wei Wuxian as his eyes showed his vulnerability. “Did Lan Zhan-”
Lan Qiren scoffed, waving his head. “Of course not. That boy is stubborn to his core. It would be easier to move mountains than get him to speak if you asked him to keep it a secret. Your fighting style is the first giveaway. Even though you’ve started incorporating your own moves and even some of ours, which I’m assuming you picked up from Wangji, it still has that distinct Jiang flare. Not to mention it was common knowledge that Jiang Fengmian was searching for you across the cultivation world. I will not pry and ask why you now are a rogue cultivator. If that is something you want to tell me or just keep between you and Wangji, I will respect your wishes.” If the light pink scar marks that his youngest nephew saw on the other while they went to the Cold Pond and did speak to him painted a nasty picture about what happened in the Jiang household during his time there, that was his anger to keep hidden.
Seeing the relief flood, his young visitor Lan Qiren cleared his throat before telling the few stories he had with the couple and the stories he heard from others. It was almost time for curfew when the two were finished. He sent Wei Wuxian off with one final word.
“Your parents would be proud of you.”
They both ignored the tears that gathered in the younger’s eyes as they bid each other good night.
~~~

It was one of the few warm days as the season transitioned to autumn weather as Lan Qiren walked to the designated spot to meet his nephews and Wei Wuxian. The latter had found a weak point in their barrier in the back hills.

“What were you doing back there?” questioned Lan Qiren.

“Ahaha, you know, just walking.”

“Wei Wuxian!”

“Alright, alright! I was fishing in the streams. I know killing is forbidden, but the fish were so plump I just had to!”

Lan Qiren arrived to see the three chatting when Wei Wuxian was the first to spot him. “Grandmaster Lan!” he shouted and waved like he wouldn't be able to find them. The longer Wei Wuxian stayed, the more relaxed he became, which meant “bending” some rules. His nephews were no help as Lan Xichen just chuckled, and Lan Wangji half-heartedly scolded him with a soft “Wei Ying.” Lan Qiren sighed as his Head of Discipline showed biasness before deciding not to comment on it. It would only give him a headache.

“What is all this?” he asked instead as he looked at the basket and other supplies the teens were holding.

“Wuxian said that the area is calming and quiet. So, as you’ve been overworking yourself with the lectures and running the sect, we decided to have a picnic,” Lan Xichen said.

“A picnic? We are going to secure the safety of our home, not play around. I also need to get back to work after we finish this.”

“The arrangements have already been taken care of. Huang-laoshi will be taking over your midday class, and Elder Qiang and Elder Bojing have agreed to take over your sect duties.”

Lan Qiren looked at the three that had hope shining in their eyes, that he would agree and he couldn't crush their dreams. Not when they went off their way to get coverage for him to have a break. He also hasn't spent too much time with either of his nephews recently, so this would be a nice moment to catch up.

“Well, lead the way.”

~~~
The area they arrived in was as described, and they quickly found the reason for their breach of security. A tree that had rotted fell over, leaving a gap in their wards. The group of four swiftly dealt with the issue, and the Lan’s started restitching their spells together. As Wei Wuxian watched, he threw out suggestions to strengthen the barrier and explained how their current barrier could easily be broken down. When asked how he knows so much about the formation of barriers, his answer was simple.
“I’ve built one. I told you I stayed on Dafan mountain last winter, right? Well, the people who live there are a branch family of the Wen sect, but they're all farmers and craftspeople. There are only two cultivators there, but they’re medics. The Wen main branch is not...kind to their citizens. They impose heavy taxes and beat their people, sometimes going a step farther if they feel like it. So I built them a barrier to keep out unwanted guests and creatures since Wen cultivators don't night hunt either.” Wei Wuxian scoffed before shaking his head. “Anyway, if you change the formation of these spells and change these characters, you’ll add an absorbing effect to the barrier. The more the intruder hits the barrier, the stronger it will become. Once it reaches its overload, the barrier will backfire.”
The three Lan’s stared at Wei Wuxian in awe as he drew the spell into the dirt with a stick, explaining it clearly and concisely. This boy, who hasn't even reached the age of 16, was explaining a high-level spell that he invented to protect farmers and talked as if he was discussing the weather. Gone was the playful teen, and here was the young genius who creates either to help people or satisfy his own boredom. Of course, a barrier was nothing to him as it was just a larger canvas made up of arrays combined to make one big entity. The Jiangs were foolish to let such a bright youth go, but Lan Qiren was thankful as his brilliance wasn't squashed because of petty jealousy. On the contrary, he would help nurture this talent as much as he could. The three finished rebuilding their current barrier as plans to bring the changes up to the other elders were talked through. They didn't have much to worry about because even though the older Elders hated change and would rather stick to tradition, Wei Wuxian has captured their attention with his brilliance. It might be an argument just to save them some face, but this was an upgrade to their already well-established system that wouldn't change too much.
Their task was completed, the group started setting up their picnic area. Laying down soft blankets to sit on, removing the carefully packed bowls of rice and soup, setting up the teapot with a warming talisman, and creating a small pile of wood from the dead tree to create a fire.
“Alright! Now here’s the fun part where we catch our own lunch. Don't worry, Grandmaster Lan, I’ll catch you fish for you so you can continue to look all scholarly.” reassured Wei Wuxian.
Lan Qiren was anything but reassured. Learning to catch fish barehanded is just so...uncouth. His face must've shown his thoughts as he responded while imitating Lan Qiren. “Catching fish is a life skill. You’ll never know when you are out on the road, and the only available food sources around are alive. Do not worry, young masters, Wei-laoshi will teach you the ropes!”
Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen huffed in amusement before following Wei Wuxian’s lead. Taking their boots off and tucking their sleeves and skirts out of the way, the trio made their way into the river. Lan Qiren watched as Wei Wuxian demonstrated for his nephews, scooping up the fish so quietly and quickly he would have missed it if he were not paying attention. When the boy came and skewered it on a stick, then laid it on a rock, Lan Qiren started preparing the tea.
Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen were both quick learners and could catch a fish in no time. Their main problem was holding onto it after removing it from the water. Finally, after the third time, Lan Wangji was able to secure his fish. It took his older brother a few more tries, who hilariously obtained his prize.
“Wuxian...why did the fish suddenly stop moving?” Lan Xichen asked.
Wei Wuxian, who was heckling Lan Qiren, turned to look at him before breaking out into a full belly laugh. “Wow, the famed Lan arm strength in action!”
Lan Xichen was stunned as the fish lay limp in his grasp while the rest looked at him in amusement. “It’s fine. Just watch out for the bones when you eat it.”
The group of four sat around enjoying each other's company, eating good food, and having rich conversations. Then, as the sun started lowering and they made their way back to the inner parts of the Cloud Recesses, Lan Qiren thought he would remember this day and feeling for a long time to come.
~~~

Wei Wuxian walked along with Lan Wangji and his new friend Nie Huaisang as they returned from the back hills. The two had met while the latter was bird-catching after the lunch period. Wei Wuxian, who knew the other was there for the lectures, let him catch the little bird before approaching him. After that, the two teens became fast friends as they talked about catching birds, one for eating and the other to keep as pets, their love of poetry and art, and lastly, bonding over their experiences in Qinghe, as Wei Wuxian spent some time in the region for his hunts. Nie Huaisang, fascinated by his new rogue cultivator friend, asked how he could stay in a place with so many rules after having total freedom.

“I like the rules. They keep people safe, and no one is above them. Though...there are a few that can go, like the no alcohol rule.” Wei Wuxian said with a wink.

Now the pair were seen together frequently, and Lan Wangji even joined them on such occasions as today, where they had just finished testing out Wei Wuxian’s fireproof talisman. After testing it out on different surfaces; a paper house, Nie Huaisang’s wooden fan, and Wei Wuxian’s robes concluded it to be a success. Reaching the main pathway, Nie Huaisang’s whinings were cut short by a gruff voice. The trio turned in its direction and saw sect leader Nie Mingjue walking towards them with Lan Xichen by his side.

Bowing in greeting and getting the same in return, the group started walking together. “What are the three of you doing together?” Nie Mingjue asked.

“We were testing out Wei-Xiong's new fireproof talisman! But, Da-ge, it was so mean. They set my fan on fire to see if it worked!”

“Wei?”

Nie Mingjue’s eyes met with Wei Wuxians as a piece of information connected in his thoughts. “You’re Wei Wuxian, the young rogue cultivator everyone has been talking about. ‘The People’s Prince, huh?”

Wei Wuxian flushed at the title, laughing nervously. “I see you’ve met Liu-xiansheng. He keeps trying to make it stick everywhere it goes.”

“Well, it’s working. From what I hear, it’s a different variation of that depending on the region. It's a matter of time before a singular title is bestowed on you. Now, tell me about this new invention of yours. Why create a fireproof talisman?”

“Oh, sometimes my inventions backfire on me. I’ve burnt a lot of robes, but it's fine. Now I just need to see if the seamstress will stitch the runes into my clothes. I would do it myself, but I'm terrible with a needle. Right, Lan Zhan?”

“Wei Ying’s needlework leaves a lot to be desired.”

“Mm.” Wei Wuxian said in imitation before laughing.

“Ah, there they go again,” whispered Nie Huaisang, making Lan Xichen chuckle.

“Oh, if the Nie and Lan sect want to be my first buyers, I’ll give you a super-secret deal. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; you shouldn't miss out!”

“The Unclean Realm is made of stone, and we have few trees in our vicinity. We wouldn't need that,” said Nie Mingjue

“Well, what if the trees you do have to get struck by lightning and catch fire? Your disciples aren't made of stone and can catch on fire. So it would be a good investment.” Wei Wuxian said matter of factly. Nie Mingjue laughed at his reasoning, clapping him on the back.

“I like you. Fine, I’ll buy your talismans. Let’s meet later to discuss the price.”

“Before we go, Wuxian, Uncle would like you to join us for afternoon tea. He wishes to speak with you,” Lan Xichen.

“Oh, of course.”

~~~
It was a common occurrence for Wei Wuxian to be having tea with the Lan’s. What wasn't common was Lan Qiren wanting to “talk” to him about something. He doesn't know why but it seemed important. When he voiced these thoughts to Lan Wangji, he was reassured that it was nothing bad, but still, he felt anxious. What if the Cloud Recesses was tired of him hanging around? Has he been too loud and broken the rules? Maybe they don’t want him hanging about Lan Zhan anymore. After all, he’s a second young master of a great sect, while Wei Wuxian is a servant’s son.
These fears stayed in his heart all day, so when the time came, and Lan Qiren told him to leave, it wouldn't be too much of a shock. He prepared himself to go back to his room tonight and pack his belongings. He had believed that was what the conversation was about; he wasn't prepared for the opposite to happen.
“What?” Wei Wuxian asked, confused.
“I’m asking you if you want to stay in the Cloud Recesses for the winter. I know you can go to Dafan if you choose not to stay, but you’re already here, so stay with us.” Lan Qiren repeated himself.
Wei Wuxian sat wide-eyed, looking at the other occupants' faces before nodding his head numbly in agreement.
“Good. Then this leads me to my next point of business. I would like to officially invite you to join the lectures starting the following spring.”
“Really? But aren’t the lectures mostly about sects and politics?"
“That is one portion of the studies. As the students are from different sects and will have to live and work together not only in their time here but also in the future, we must teach about the differences that each sect has to avoid conflict. Students like you who hail from no sect will help you navigate the world easier as you go from region to region, not to create discord with the ruling sect. Building alliances is also another benefit of the lecture. Your mother, a rogue cultivator, and your father, a disciple, joined the lectures. You should carry on their legacy and be the next generation. You are talented with the sword and brilliant in mind; taking formal classes along with your self-studying could benefit you greatly,” Lan Qiren. ‘Besides, if things go the way I think they will, you will be a high-ranking member of our sect. You will have to learn politics then.’ Lan Qiren thought to himself.
Clearing his throat, Lan Qiren turned back to his guest. “Any other reservations you have?”
“Just one. The Jiang sect.” Wei Wuxian said with a  grimace.
Three pairs of eyes honed in on him at the admission. This was the first time he has brought up The Jiang sect to anyone outside of Lan Wangji, even though he knows the other two know of his past.
“Are you having issues with the Jiang disciples that are here? Do we need to keep an eye on them?” Lan Xichen asked, concerned.
“No, no, there’s no trouble with them. In fact, we still get along well; it's just that. They’ve told me about some things that happened after I left, and Jiang Ch-, Jiang-gongzi will be here for next year's lectures, and I don't think he’ll be too happy to see me here.”
The group sat in silence, pondering the situation before it was broken.
“We will protect Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji said resolutely.
“Lan Zhan... you can't start a diplomatic incident just for me.”
“Will protect you,” he repeated.
“My nephew is right. Cloud Recesses is a haven for those that wish to learn. No one is above the rules, not even sect heirs. If you feel endangered, let us know, and we will take action. The only thing I ask is that you keep your outlandish theories to yourself.”
Taking a deep breath to control his emotions, Wei Wuxian nodded his head. “I accept.”
~~~

Winter blanketed the earth in white, and the warm air of spring unfroze the land. Before the first snowfall, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji went to Dafan to test out his fertility talismans and visit the first family that claimed him as their own. The Wens was delighted to see him again, commenting on how healthy he looks compared to when they first met him. They were also happy to meet Lan Wangji, as his letters to them talked about the young man often. There was light teasing from the older family members, asking about courtship or marriage, flustering the teens. Their last night, there was a big feast as Wen Ning and Wen Qing were also leaving, heading to Nightless City at the call of Sect leader Wen. It was a bittersweet moment, but they made the most of us, just enjoying the time they had together. Before Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji headed back to the Cloud Recesses, Wen Qing handed them a pouch of herbs to the Lan’s for taking care of Wei Wuxian.

Once winter was fully here, Wei Wuxian spent most of his time in the jingshi instead of the library pavilion. When Lan Xichen learned that he could play the dizi, he got one commissioned for him, and now he plays almost every day with Lan Wangji. When the skies are clear and the snow isn't deep, the two partake in some night hunting around Caiyi for a change of pace.

With the ending of winter came the ending of the lectures. While the other students rejoiced that their year was over, Nie Huaisang was screaming as he ran away from his brother to hide.

“Wei-Xiong! You’ll protect me, right?”

“Nie-Xiong, how did you fail? You were doing better!”

“Yeah, but you’re joining the lectures this year, right? Think of all the fun we could have together if I stayed this year.”

“That’s why you failed?? Chifeng-zun isn't going to like that.”

“NIE HUAISANG!” yelled a booming voice.

Nie Mingjue walked towards them with Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji behind him. When confronting his brother, Nie Huaisang reassured him that he would pass this year with the help of Wei Wuxian. Nie Mingjue turned sharp eyes onto the teen.

“Wei Wuxian, make sure my brother passes, and I will buy one year’s worth of one of your inventions. If he fails, then I’m taking you back to Qinghe with me!” he declared.

“Mingjue-Xiong, be reasonable.”

“Da-ge, you can't just take people!”

While the others protested for him, Wei Wuxian laughed in disbelief. “Why am I involved in this?”

Now standing in his white disciple's robes, Wei Wuxian felt that this year would truly change a lot for him. So he walked out of his room as the guest lectures were about to begin.

Chapter Text

Wei Wuxian walked to the classroom with Lan Wangji for the first day of the lectures. He was nervous. Not only would he be surrounded by high-ranking cultivators, but he would be in a classroom setting for the first time in 2 years. The material itself he wasn't worried about as he was familiar with it since he helped Nie Huaisang with his homework last year. Even when he was still in Yunmeng Jiang, he had the highest scores in theoretical and practical knowledge. Two years being a rogue cultivator and having unlimited access to the Lan’s library; he was confident that none of the sheltered sect heirs could match him in his knowledge. Lan Wangji being the only exception. No, his main concern was if he’d be able to stay still and focus the whole time. If push came to shove, he would just write theories on a new invention.

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were among the first in the classroom as they sat down in the front of the class. He could feel the eyes of the other students on them as he casually conversed with Lan Wangji. Well, he couldn't blame them; Lan Wangji is beautiful. He would stare at him too. Students slowly started to trickle in small groups and individually. Nie Huaisang came to say hello to them before sitting in the back of the class, hoping that Lan Qiren wouldn't notice him back there. The other Lan disciples joining the lecture sat around and behind Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, effectively blocking the other sects from being near them. This was by design, of course, as Lan Qiren didn't want anything to happen to the two. They couldnt predict how the Jiang sect would react to Wei Wuxian’s presence, but he could predict how his nephew would respond if any danger came towards the other’s person. So it was better if they were kept separate for now.

The Jins and the Jiangs were the last groups to enter the room. While the Jins turned off yet attracted people because of their haughty attitudes and good looks, the Jiangs were the opposite. While the disciples had a friendly smile on their faces, nobody was willing to get close because of the oppressive, volatile aura radiating off of Jiang Wanyin, the sect heir. Sharp eyes cut everyone who looked in their direction, effectively cutting any conversation attempts off before it could even start. Jiang Wanyin sucked his teeth after noticing the only available seats on both sides of the class were in the back before he started scolding his fellow disciples for being lazy, and tomorrow, they would need to get up earlier.

The arrival of Lan Qiren stopped his tantrum in its tracks as every disciple rushed to sit properly and quietly. Lan Qiren stood at the front of the class and only said a few words before taking a scroll and unrolling it until it reached the room entrance. There, he began reading all 3000 rules of the Lan sect to the dismay of all of the visiting disciples. As all of the Lan’s and Wei Wuxian were already familiar with the rules, the latter let the words wash over him, lulling him into a sense of security. The longer Lan Qiren went on, the more Wei Wuxian slumped in his seat, almost invading Lan Wangji’s space. Sensing his friend's boredom, Lan Wangji took a piece of paper, writing something down before sliding it onto Wei Wuxian’s desk. The pair started discreetly passing notes to each other, with Wei Wuxian having to hide his laughter behind the sleeve of his robes.

The class carried on, eventually shifting to the introductory lesson, but it was still easy. The basics of how each great sect was founded, their sect motifs, and beginner cultivation theory. This was stuff that any cultivator should know, yet Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian had to take over as the other sect disciples were stuck. As soon as his name was called, Wei Wuxian felt eyes on his back. Those that are curious, some that are familiar, and one that was full of hatred. For the rest of the class, he sat on edge as the fiery gaze never shifted from his person. Finally, when the gong wrung, sighs were released around the room as they were dismissed for lunch. As the other Lan disciples felt the hate-filled glare in their direction during the class, they kept Wei Wuxian in the middle of their group as they exited the room together. The only one who approached them was Nie Huaisang, who looked nervous.

Once far enough away, the Nie sect heir couldnt hold it anymore and let out his thoughts. “Wei-Xiong, that guy was super scary. It felt like I was suffocating from his aura. Jiang-gongzi spent the whole time glaring at the back of your head. Why does he hate you so much?”

Scratching the back of his head, Wei Wuxian responded, “I don't really know why he hates me. We didn't leave off on the best terms, but I have no hard feelings towards him.”

Wei Wuxian thought back to the conversation he had with the Jiang disciples for last year's lectures.

“Wei-Xiong, it would've been great if you stayed and became our Head Disciple. Everyone knows you deserved it, unlike that brat Jiang Wanyin. But I don't blame you for leaving. Actually, after you left, the sect changed quite a bit.”

“Yeah yeah! Madam Yu is no longer allowed to discipline us. The Elders were really upset when you left. I think they pressured the Sect Leader to take action against the Madam. Madam Yu and Sect Leader Jiang had a big argument, and then the next day, she no longer supervised our training. We still have to deal with Jiang Wanyin’s temper, but that's nothing,” said another Jiang disciple.

“Speaking of Jiang Wanyin, you might want to steer clear of him if you’re still in the Cloud Recesses. He’s coming next year, and he really hates you for some reason.”

“One time, we went to Yiling for a night hunt, but when we got there, it was already taken care of. The villagers said you had taken care of it already. Fourth-shidi was really excited that you were doing well, and the sect heir did not like that and punched him. When we returned home, he and Madam Yu were so angry. Even Shijjie was.”

“Jiang-guniang too?” Asked Wei Wuxian in surprise.

“Ah, you know how she is. No thoughts of her own. Her family says that they hate you, so she goes along with it. So don't worry about it.”

That was the last time they talked about the Jiang main family, as Wei Wuxian didn't want to hear anymore. It was better if he didn't think about them, but now he couldnt do that as one of the people who hated him most was here for the next year. So all he could do was not let his guard down.

~~~
A week went by without any issues. Jiang Wanyin seemed content with glaring at Wei Wuxian from afar, and the latter was fine with that. There's nothing wrong with just looking. Today, Wei Wuxian was by himself walking along the paths of the Cloud Recesses. Nie Huaisang was in the library pavilion for breaking the no pets rule with his birds, and Lan Wangji was overseeing him and the other disciples that were copying lines. Of course, this would be when Jiang Wanyin struck, the one moment when people didn't constantly surround him.
“Well, well well, look who it is. ‘The People's Champion’ *. Where are your entourage and your guard dog Lan Wangji? Did they finally realize how annoying you are and left?”
Sighing, Wei Wuxian turned around towards the Jiang sect heir, “Jiang Chen-”
“Do NOT call me that! You have no right to speak to me so casually!”
Pursing his lips, Wei Wuxian tried again. “Jiang Wanyin, I don't know what your issue with me is, but we can talk to each other respectfully.”
Jiang Wanyin huffed a laugh. ”’ Respectfully?’ What, you think because you have clouds embroidered on your robe, you’re a Lan now?”
“Everyone has clouds on their robes.”
“And they also have their sect insignia. You’re a rogue cultivator, yet your robe isn't blank. Did you really not notice that your robes resemble a Lan disciple and not the guest lecture robes?” Jiang Wanyin shouted.
Wei Wuxian was taken aback. He really didn't notice the difference. The only thought he gave to the robes was that he matched Lan Zhan and even teased him when his friend looked happy to see him in his sect colors. Thinking on it now, he could see the difference between the guest disciples and his, but he doesn't understand why that would be an issue, and he said it out loud. Jiang Wanyin’s face turned shades of red and purple before he grabbed Wei Wuxian by the front of his robes and slammed him into the nearby building.
“Don’t be so arrogant just because you fooled those idiot commoners into thinking you’re some hero! You would be NOTHING if it weren’t for my family, and look at how you repaid us. Now you’re here using the Lan’s like the leech that you are. Tell me, are you sleeping with Lan Wangji? Courting powerful men just like your who-“
“JIANG WANYIN!” Wei Wuxian yelled, cutting off the insult that he’s heard plenty during his time at Lotus Pier. He was no longer under their abuse; he didn’t have to accept the scornful words thrown on his parents' names any longer. Anger morphed his usually smiling face into a scowl as he grabbed Jiang Wanyin’s wrist. He tightened his grip to force the other to let him go, but they were interrupted before it reached that point.
“Is there a problem here?”
Wei Wuxian turned his head to the voice and saw the person who interrupted them was Elder Qiang. He has spent time with the Elder on numerous occasions and thinks he’s gotten to know him relatively well. The man had a stern exterior like all of the older generation, but he had a hidden mischievous side that he used to play minor pranks on his fellow Elders. However, he also was deeply compassionate and had a wide depth of patience, which is why he was put in charge of helping to train the baby Lan disciples. Wei Wuxian respected the man a lot and didn't want to cause trouble in his home. Pushing Jiang Cheng away, Wei Wuxian bowed to the man.
“Elder Qiang, this one apologizes for any trouble. Jiang-gongzi and I were having a discussion that turned heated. There’s no problem.”
Jiang Wanyin sneered before bowing to the Elder and turning away. He made it two steps before he was stopped.
“Jiang-gongzi, please report to Wangji for punishment for breaking the rules 210,117, and 369. Wuxian, come with me.”
Both boys looked at the man with wide eyes as he turned away and walked in another direction. Wei Wuxian jogged to catch up with him as Jiang Wanyin stood in place, fists clenching as his face flashed between red and purple in his anger, stomping away in the direction of the discipline hall.
Wei Wuxian and Elder Qiang walked in silence for a while before the younger broke it. “Elder, why did you punish Jiang-gongzi?”
“Hmm…I saw the whole altercation. I was wondering if you both would tell the truth of what transpired. You chose to vaguely speak of the issue, while Jiang-gongzi chose to let you take the fall for the argument he started. It is commendable that you chose to pin the blame on both of you, but I won't punish you for defending your mother’s honor.”
“Grandmaster Lan would probably say, ‘I shouldn't be provoked by such petty words probably.” Wei Wuxian laughed sheepishly.
Elder Qiang snorted at the imitation. “Well, it’s a good thing he’s not here right now. But, since you don't seem too busy at the moment, will you keep the children company for me while I speak with Qiren?”
“Of course!”
Wei Wuxian walked over the little group of toddlers he affectionately called his ducklings and played with them while the elders spoke. The children looked up to him because he was different from most people in their sect, being more outspoken and free with his emotions, praising them, and giving encouragement to keep going on. Wei Wuxian also helped them with their homework since he spent most of his time in the library anyway. Of course, they also had something to say about his new robes after seeing the teen in only black and red for a year straight.
“Wei-gege, you’re dressed like us now!” yelled one of the little ones excitedly.
“I am! Do I look like a Lan now?” he asked with a wink.
“No, still too noisy,” said another child.
“Mu-ayi used to wear different colors, then she had a wedding and started wearing white. Did you have a wedding, Wei-gege?”
“Did you get married to Lan-er-gongzi? A-Niang said he was going to get married soon.”
“Wei-gege, why weren't we invited to your wedding?”
Wei Wuxian spluttered, face flushing, “No! I didn't get married! I’m joining the lectures with the other disciples!” he said with pride.
Wei Wuxian didn't get the reaction he wanted as the group of toddlers started crying at his words. He was stunned and quickly tried to stop their tears.
“What’s going on?” Elder Qiang asked with Lan Qiren beside him, their conversation finished.
“Aiyah, I don't know what happened! I told them I was joining the guest lectures, and they started crying,” Wei Wuxian said, distressed.
“B-because! That means Wei-gege will leave when it’s over just like the others,” one of the toddlers cried.
“Ah, I see. Well, then we’ll just have to make sure you Wei-gege stays after the lectures. Isn't that right, Qiren?”
Huffing at the absurdity of the conversation, Lan Qiren just answers with a nod of his head.
“Even if you don't marry Lan-er-gongzi?”
Various reactions broke out on the older three occupants' faces, from a hushed laugh to a groan.
“Yes, I’ll stay even then,” Wei Wuxian conceded.
~~~

Wei Wuxian was sitting in his normal spot in the library when he noticed someone walking around lost. He looked at the person and saw it was Jin Zixuan, the Jin sect heir. He doesn't know how to feel about the young man. When he was younger, he didn't like him because Jiang Wanyin didn't like how he treated his sister. Obviously, Wei Wuxian followed suit before his eyes opened to his reality. Now he was just an arrogant young master who seemed a bit lonely if he only talked to a select few people in his sect was anything to go by. Reaching out a friendly hand to him, the same way he did to Lan Wangji, he directed him where the book he was looking for was. He then offered his assistance if he needed any help with the homework or anything else in the library because he was always there. He didn't think the Jin sect heir would take him up on his offer, truth be told, but he joined them one day, and he’s been a fixture in their little group ever since. Much to Lan Wangji’s ire. Wei Wuxian teases his friend for drinking so much vinegar, and the other doesn't even have the shame to hide his jealousy. Nie Huaisang had to be the one to reassure Jin Zixuan that Lan Wangji didn't hate him but was jealous of him spending time in Wei Wuxian’s company. Wei Wuxian even said he spoiled Lan Wangji by giving him all his attention, so now he doesn't know how to act. Jin Zixuan sighed and accepted his fate as the fourth wheel along with Nie Huaisang.

~~~
This week is the yearly discussion conference, so the visiting disciples had a break as Lan Qiren was in Qinghe. Lan Xichen had approached his brother for help to investigate water ghouls in Caiyi town. At the moment, Lan Wangji was headed to Wei Wuxian’s guest room to see if he wanted to help. Knocking on the door and not receiving an answer, Lan Wangji let himself in. He walked into a room of disarray; papers, talismans, and books were strewn all over the floor with Wei Wuxian sleeping at the table in his under robes and hair down. Sighing, Lan Wangji started cleaning up the mess around the sleeping teen, making piles of his notes and materials. Once the floor and table can be seen again, Lan Wangji moves to wake up Wei Wuxian enough so the other can get to bed.
Feeling a hand on him, Wei Wuxian steers and turns to face his friend with sleep-heavy eyes.
“Lan Zhan.”
“Wei Ying, what time did you go to sleep?”
“What time does the morning bell ring?” he asked while sitting up lethargically.
 “You need to take better care of yourself. Go back to sleep; I’ll send someone to bring you lunch later,” he said, leading the younger to the bed.
“Lan Zhan, why are you here? Not that I'm not happy to see you, but..”
“Xiongzhang and I will investigate water ghouls in Caiyi and wanted to ask Wei Ying to join.”
“Ahh!” Wei Wuxian stood up, a bit more awake, walking over to his talisman stacks. He pushed some things around before finding the one he was looking for. “Here! Try this out for me. It’s a purifying talisman; let me know how well it works. Oh, and use the compass; it should help you find the ghouls easier.”
“Mm.”
Wei Wuxian walks back to his bed while yawning. “Let me know how the hunt goes,” he said before snuggling under the sheets, letting out a content sigh.
Lan Wangji looked at the other with a smile on his face before turning to leave. He gave instructions to a servant to bring Wei Wuxian lunch before meeting back up with his brother. He sees Jiang Wanyin speaking to Lan Xichen, and a frown crosses his face upon his arrival. He waits for their conversation to end before approaching his brother.
“Wangji, will Wuxian be joining us?”
“No, he didn't go to sleep until the waking bell rang. Then, he gave me a new invention of his to test.”
“I see. Jiang-gongzi and Jin-gongzi have offered their services in helping us in Caiyi.”
“Is that wise? Jin-gongzi is capable, but the other one is not trustworthy.”
“Jiang-gongzi grew up in Yunmeng, where they are used to dealing with water ghouls. Therefore, having his experience would be helpful. Hopefully, he will use this chance to fix his image in the other students' eyes and make comrades. We should not judge others harshly based on our preconceived notions.”
Lan Wangji replied with a quiet “Mm” and turned his head. He understands the meaning of his brother's words but knows his own animosity towards the Jiang heir was justified. He has seen the teens' interactions with Wei Ying and the other guest disciples. He has heard his responses to theory questions in class, choosing violence instead of helping people. He has seen him on their joint night hunt experiences, with the heir choosing his own life over aiding another. Wangji is willing to evaluate a person’s character and not judge so harshly depending on circumstances. Still, a repeat pattern of cruel behavior shows exactly the type of person Jiang Wanyin is. He has no reason to think otherwise, and he doubts this little excursion will change that.
The investigation of the water ghouls turned out to be bigger, with the dark mass being a waterborne abyss. The exploration started normal enough with Jiang Wanyin making snide comments about Wei Wuxian’s absence which was soon cut off by Lan Wangji’s icy glare and the mentions of the other’s inventions. The compass pointed towards the center of Biling Lake in only one direction, giving them an idea of what was to come and where the ghouls were leading them to. With the help of the compass, they were not taken by too much surprise when a whirlpool started trying to sink them. The group ascended their swords and saw a Gusu Lan outer disciple stuck in the boat without his sword. Water tentacles emerged, wrapping around the boat and dragging it under the currents with the disciple still on it. Lan Wangji was too far away to attempt to save him when he remembered he had Wei Wuxian’s purification talisman in his robes. Taking it out and throwing it at the tentacles, a bright light shone once it made contact and had the tentacles scrambling to getaway. Lan Wangji used that chance to grab the disciple using Binding - another of Wei Wuxian’s inventions to grab the disciple out of the boat. Not wanting to irritate the Abyss anymore, the cultivators flew back to the safety of the town. Once on land Lan Wangji turned to the cultivator and asked, “are you alright?”
Getting a frantic reply and thanks from him, Wangji nodded his head and reconvened with his brother. There was not much they could say around outsiders, but the agreement of where the waterborne abyss came from was reached.
~~~

The lectures continued as normal after the waterborne abyss incident. Wei Wuxian’s purifying talismans were used to help weaken it after Lan Xichen noted in the meeting with the elders the effect they had on the tentacles. It was a good thing this worked because they didn't have to drain the lake and interrupt the livelihoods of those in Caiyi town. Along with the lectures continuing as normal, so did the punishments. Lan Wangji, as the head of discipline, was sitting in his spot in the library overseeing the trouble makers who were copying lines.

The door to the library pavilion suddenly opened harshly, and Lan Wangji turned sharp eyes to the intruder, ready to reprimand them before softening as they landed on the figure of his beloved.

“Lan Zhan~” Wei Wuxian whined, coming to flop in front of him at his table. “What should I do? Nie-Xiong is in trouble for having spring books, Jin-Xiong went to visit his demon dog, and you’re stuck here! So who’s going to play with me?” he wailed, rolling around on the floor for attention.

“You can spend time with Uncle,” Lan Wangji suggested.

“He’s busy! I saw him talking to a group of senior disciples on my way here.”

“And Xiongzhang?”

“He went to Caiyi, but it’s not the same. Let's go play music in the Jingshi,” Wei Wuxian pouted, placing his head on the table. Lan Wangji looked down at him, thinking he looked like their bunnies in the back hill before his hand moved without thinking. Dipping his brush in ink, Lan Wangji drew a circle on Wei Wuxian’s scrunched nose, filling it in before moving to draw three lines under his nose under both nostrils. Wei Wuxian stayed still in his curiosity of what the other was drawing on his face but scrunched his nose, feeling the wet ink touch him.

Once Lan Wangji was finished, the two sat there staring at each other before the older broke the silence. “Cute,” Lan Wangji said before turning away, his blushing ears giving him away. Wei Wuxian’s face flushed down to his neck, whining into the sleeves of his robes. “Lan Zhan~! You can't just say things like that! I have a weak heart.”

“Wei Ying will just have to get used to it.”

“YOU TWO!” an angry voice yelled out in the quiet of the library pavilion. Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian turned to the side where the disciples there for punishment sat and stared at Jiang Wanyin, who was standing, face-changing between red and purple. His hands were clenched tightly, and in between, one of them was a broken brush.

“How dare you both be so shameless in public! Do you even have any-”

“Copy virtue 100 more times,” interrupted Lan Wangji with a steely expression.

“What?!”

“An additional 50 times. Shall I keep going, Jiang-gongzi?”

Jiang Wanyin opened and closed his mouth, wanting to argue back before sitting down in a huff and continuing his work. The other disciples in the area avoid him not to get caught in the crossfire.

Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian turned back into their own little bubble together, ignoring the dark glare being sent in their direction.

~~~
Today Jiang Wanyin was in an even worse mood than normal. In class, they learned about the founder of the Lan sect, Lan An, and learned about how romantic he was. It was sickening watching the ungrateful brat being so shameless with the Second Jade. It was even worse after listening to the other disciples talk about girls from different families. Even though she was the only daughter of a great sect, his sister was barely spoken of, and when she was, there were dismissive comments about her lack of cultivation or average looks. The disrespect to his sister pushed him to snap at his fellow students before being punished again by Lan Wangji.
Leaving the library after copying his amount of lines for the day, Jiang Wanyin decided to take a walk before dinner, where he came across Wei Wuxian, Nie Huaisang, and Jin Zixuan playing around, making a fool of themselves in the clearing. Looking at the trio, Jiang Wanyin felt his temper rising. Every time he looked at Wei Wuxian, he just remembered how this ungrateful son of a servant ruined his family. Even before he was brought to live with them, his father cared more about the other than him and his mother always compared their skills as Jiang Wanyin couldn't match someone who started cultivating later in his childhood. Once he left, his mother was reduced to a puppet, his father treated him as an ordinary disciple, and his sister became harsher. Now he looks at the reason for his misery, living a life of joy and tainting his A-Jie's betrothed. Jiang Wanyin didn't like Jin Zixuan because of his dismissiveness about his sister when he should be worshipping her, but he hated Wei Wuxian even more. Stomping over to the three teens with a dark scowl on his face, interrupting their jovial mood.
“Jin Zixuan, you’re the heir to a great sect; you shouldn't keep such riffraff in your company, “Jiang Wanyin said, looking at Wei Wuxian from head to toe.
“Who I keep as friends is none of Jiang-gongzi’s business,” Jin Zixuan replied, standing defensively.
“You! You’re engaged to my sister! You should not be prancing around with a dirty traitor.”
“Stop being rude to Wei-Xiong. He left your sect on good terms; just leave him alone,” yelled Nie Huaisang.
“Good terms?! That bastard-” Jiang Wanyin yelled, pointing his finger in Wei Wuxian’s face, “ruined everything!”
Nie Huaisang moved in between the two, separating Jiang Wanyin from his friend. “Whatever happened after Wei-Xiong left is not his concern. So don't take your anger out on him! If you have complaints, tell them to your parents and not us!”
At the mention of his parents, Jiang Wanyin’s vision turned black, and he struck out, punching Nie Huaisang in the face, knocking him to the ground. Both Wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan were shocked and went to help the other, but before they could, Nie Huaisang locked fiery eyes onto the other and punched him back. Jin Zixuan pushed Wei Wuxian out of the way to get help while he tried to break the two up. Wei Wuxian nodded and ran in the opposite direction. Jin Zixuan pulled Nie Huaisang off of Jiang Wanyin, separating the two. The Jin heir tried to calm down his friend when he was suddenly struck in the face by a still flaming Jiang Wanyin. Realizing the other wouldn't stop just from words, Jin Zixuan hit him back. Soon Gusu Lan's disciples, followed by Lan Qiren, came into the clearing to stop the chaos.
That day letters were sent to three of the great sects about the brawl during the guest lectures.
~~~

Jin Guangshan and Jiang Fengmian were the first to arrive as they were closer to the Cloud Recesses. The two were briefed on the situation and went to talk to their sons while waiting for Nie Mingjue to arrive. When the Nie sect leader did, he was met at the gate by Lan Xichen, who was trying to placate him enough not to attack the Jiang sect heir. Nie Mingjue’s first concern was his brother’s wellbeing, so he went to the infirmary where he was resting. Because of Nie Huaisang’s weaker constitution, he was more banged up and healed a bit slower than the other two, so he was kept there to be watched by the doctors.

Nie Mingjue barged into the healing pavilion loudly, to the doctors' agitation, eyes only looking for one thing. “Huaisang!” he shouted once he was spotted.

Nie Huaisang was sitting on the bed with Wei Wuxian by his side as the two laughed at something. When the Nie sect leader noticed them, Wei Wuxian stood up and bowed to the older man as Huaisang waved happily before wincing from agitating his injuries. “Da-ge! You came quick!”

“Huaisang! I sent you here to learn, and now you’re getting into fights?!”

“Ah Sect leader, Nie, don't be too harsh on him. Nie-Xiong was just trying to defend me...and it turned out like this.”

Nie Mingjue turned in his direction, “tell me what happened.”

Nie Huaisang and Wei Wuxian tell the story starting with them fooling around together with Jin Zixuan in the main clearing when Jiang Wanyin approached them, antagonizing the Jin heir for being friends with the so-called traitor. Huaisang, who tried to defend Wei Wuxian, got hit, and the situation escalated from there. At the end of the story, Nie Mingjue gripped Baxia till his knuckles turned white in his anger.

“That little punk...I’ll teach him a lesson,” Nie Mingjue said through clenched teeth.

“Mingjue-Xiong, don't do anything reckless. I’m sure we can resolve this peacefully,” spoke Lan Xichen, who stayed out of the way.

“Yeah, Da-ge. Besides, I already got some punches in!” bragged Nie Huaisang.

The Nie sect leader smacked his younger brother in the back of the head. “Hmph, you had better; you’re a Nie!” Nie Mingjue then turned to Wei Wuxian, “you’re the only thing that’s got him fired up beside his fans. You sure you don't want to come back to Qinghe with us?”

Not expecting that reaction, Wei Wuxian laughed while Lan Xichen tried to explain to his friend again why he couldn't kidnap Wei Wuxian exasperatedly.

After making sure his brother was alright, Nie Mingjue joined the meeting with the other sect leaders. Unfortunately, the betrothal between the Jin sect and Jiang sect was broken, Nie Mingjue wanted to challenge Jiang Wanyin to a duel, and Jiang Fengmian almost approved it. Still, Lan Qiren talked them down, and at the end, Jiang Fengmian requested a meeting with Wei Wuxian to the ire of Lan Qiren, but he passed the message along.

Wei Wuxian was shocked to receive such a request but accepted, knowing that declining would be rude. The Jiang sect leader and Wei Wuxian met in a room adjacent to the four sect leaders were. It was quiet while the two drank their tea, the rogue cultivator not knowing where to start. Wei Wuxian observed the man in front of him and noticed he looked lighter than the last time he saw him like he had a weight lifted off his shoulders. His smile came easier and didn't look as pacifying as before. Wei Wuxian’s heard whispers here and there of what had happened to the Jiang sect after he left, and he guessed they were true.

“A-xian, you look well. Are you enjoying your time in Gusu?”

“Ah, I am. The Lan’s are very accommodating, and I’ve made some nice acquaintances.”

“That’s good. I’ve heard of your achievements. Your parents would be proud of you.”

Wei Wuxian froze. This was the first time that Jiang Fengmian ever spoke to him about his parents. Then, swallowing the knot down, he bowed his head. “Thank you, Jiang-zhongzhu.”

The light in Jiang Fengmian’s eyes dimmed a bit from being called his title and not familiarly, but he knew he didn't deserve it. Shaking his head, he asked, “Are you happy, A-xian?”

“I am,” Wei Wuxian said with no hesitation. He thought about his journeys and the people he’s met so far. Even though some days it was hard, seeing the poverty and destruction that he couldn't help with, easing the common people’s troubles gave him joy. He thought about meeting the Wen’s and how loving they were to him when he was just a stranger in the snow. Next, he thought about the freedom he has to invent and be himself without worrying about punishments. Next were the people he met in the Cloud recesses, the toddler, the elders, Grandmaster Lan and Xichen-ge, the Nie brothers, and his friends from the guest lectures. Lastly, he thought about his Lan Zhan. The two would have eventually met if he stayed with the Jiangs but would their relationship be what it is today? Would he put the servitude that the Jiangs wanted over the feelings that grew for his jade-faced friend? Would they even be allowed to be friends under Madam Yu and Jiang Wanyin’s hatred, having quiet nights where music filled the air?

Wei Wuxian thinks of the connections he’s made in the last two years and can confidently say he’s pleased. The first time he’s been since his parents passed away. Leaving the Jiang sect was the best thing he could do, and Jiang Fengmian sees that he is radiating happiness in his posture. Giving the boy that he failed a true smile as the older really is happy for the son of his heart to live joyfully and free like his parents would've wanted.

The two make small talk for a while longer before Jiang Fengmian gets up to depart with his son, who he feels no joy being around but loves regardless. That day Jiang Wanyin was expelled from the Cloud Recesses guest lectures, and word spread through the teahouses of what transpired.

Notes:

*People’s Champion- I mentioned in the last chapter that his title was different depending on region and this is the Yunmeng version of it. if anyone wants to help m choose a permanent title for our boy that would be helpful 😭

this is finally done! yay. i settled on a chapter amount because I really don't want this to be long since I still need to update transpose.

random annoyance but the way the wangxian tag is being clogged with jc-centric fics and you cant filter them out??! I hate it here.

kudos and comment please ❤️

Chapter Text

The lectures at the Cloud Recesses ended without fanfare. Nie Mingjue attempted once more to poach Wei Wuxian to his sect after finding out Nie Huaisang passed but was shut down by both him and the Lan's. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji continued to night hunt and test the former's inventions. With the downtime of not joining the lectures, they could visit the Dafan Wen's a bit more often but had to take precautions as the Wen sect was becoming more aggressive.

Before they knew it, the yearly discussion conference was upon them again. Wei Wuxian was invited to join the Gusu Lan sect as an outer disciple to participate in the event. He declined the invite, but he still went with them wanting to visit his Qing-Jie and A-Ning. Seeing them again made him elated. He even spent time with Nie Huaisang again as the others did not participate in the events either. Huaisang and Wen Ning got along well with their easy-going personalities. When it was time for the teens to go back with their respective sects, Lan Xichen, Nie Mingjue, and Wen Qing went to get their younger brothers, watching the unusual group interact because of one wandering child. The older siblings watched the scene for a bit longer as the starlight child twirled his way around the others, capturing their attention with every word he spoke.

Wen Qing was the first to break the scene, needing to return to Wen Ruohan before he noticed they were missing for too long. After telling Wei Wuxian they would see him later, Wen Qing thanked Lan Xichen for looking after Wei Wuxian, while he thanked her for the gift of herbs she sent last time, saying the healers found them very useful.

The little group broke up and went their separate ways after a few more words. The last banquet of the event was held that night, and many of the cultivators let loose even in Qishan Wen territory. People mingled with boisterous laughter as the drinks flowed. Wei Wuxian stuck out from the Lan sect since he didn't wear the forehead ribbon that even outer disciples wore. He still wore white robes in the Gusu Lan fashion as they were a gift from Lan Qiren to attend the conference. Many others were curious about the boy who had no visible relation to the Lan Sect, sitting and eating with the main family. Others didn't pay him any mind outside of gossip. They thought he was a child with no relevant name and no achievements. The Lan's must have taken him in as a pet project or another. Seeing this new person interact casually with Grandmaster Lan, Nie-zhongzhu, and Jiang-zhongzhu, they decided to keep an open ear for this boy.

The emergency bell rang, and the disturbance of spiritual energy rippled throughout the mountain. The Lan disciples and their seniors were rushing around to find out what was happening. Lan Qiren and a few other Elders went to the gate and saw Wen sect cultivators led by their heir Wen Xu attacking their barrier.

"Wen-gongzi, what is the meaning of this?!" Lan Qiren yelled.

"The Lan sect has become arrogant as of lately. Your leader is hiding away in his home, daring not to see the sun. Your heirs daring to reach the heavens. Your sect, inventing new powerful talismans. It seems your famous library has many secrets. I wonder, how many more you have kept from the rest of us?" Wen Xu said haughtily.

"You are mistaken on one thing. We only distribute the talismans; we do not invent them."

"Well, we'll just have to see, won't we?"

"You are welcome to try," Lan Qiren said, turning his back on the Wen forces, his robes flapping in the wind. Ignoring the screams of indignation from the intruders, he directed people to start moving the children and non-cultivators to evacuate, putting seniors on standby near the gate and sending others to check the perimeter of the barrier to make sure everything stayed in tack. Lan Qiren trusted the barrier Wei Wuxian helped them reinforce; he just had to take precautions. Anything can happen, and the Wen sect was an unpredictable bunch. If the barrier holds out like it's supposed to, the Lan can shelter on their mountain for at least a year before having to get more supplies from Caiyi. Sending his nephews and Wei Wuxian to the library pavilion to protect it, he returned to the entrance as that seemed to be the Wen's goal. Sitting in a lotus pose, he started meditating to circulate his qi. If a fight were to be had, he would need to be in top form.

Lan Qiren sat for a while when he was forced back to the present by a loud explosion. His eyes flew open, and his hand unsheathed his sword. Standing up and looking around, he noticed that none of the other disciples moved from their positions. The only yelling came from the other side of the still intact barrier. Smoke and fire surrounded the Wen sect members who couldn't see in front of them or who they were stepping on. Lan Qiren turned to the nearest disciple and asked for an explanation. Lan Biyu said that the barrier glowed silver before a beam of light shot out towards the Wen soldiers. That's when Lan Qiren remembered Wei Wuxian's words when they discussed the barrier's reinforcement. The barrier collects the energy, fortifying itself, and then redirects it back to the intruders. The dust and smoke started to settle, and the sight became clear. Wen bodies laid on the steps of the cloud recesses while others were tending to burns. Wen Xu was sat on the ground with his entire left side scorched and members of his sect passing him spiritual energy to heal him. It was a terrible scene, and the smell of burning flesh permeated through the air. Getting their bearings, the able-bodied disciples retreated, leaving their dead and injured comrades behind, except for their sect heir.

The Lan disciples turned to Lan Qiren, wondering what their next move would be. They were a sect committed to music and learning; no one expected a possible hostile takeover ever to occur. However, now that it was thwarted without them having to do anything and the proof of the incident left on their doorsteps, they didn't know what to do. Many were just glad that they or a loved one didn't die today over the Wen sect's entitlement and misguided belief that they were hiding powerful talismans or secrets in their library.

The Lan's decided to drag the closest people still alive in and put them into custody for questioning. Everything else would be saved for later. They did not know if the Wen sect would come back or if some were hidden in the trees, waiting for the opportune time to strike. The rest can be done tomorrow; today, they will reassure their loved ones that everything will be alright.

~~~
Word of the failed Wen take over, spread through the cultivation world. The Lan sect sent messages to their fellow sect leaders, warning them of the danger and what they witnessed from the Wen soldiers. Soon after the embarrassment of their failure, the Wen sect decreed that every sect should send their heirs and disciples to Qishan for indoctrination. Lan Qiren was not sending his nephews to be held as hostages in Wen Ruohan's hands when they were safe in their home. Nie Mingjue sent Nie Huaisang to the cloud recesses to be protected. If the Wen's decided to retaliate, then he and his men would fight to the death. Nie Mingjue has already lost his father to that sect; he won't bow to them anymore. The Jin's are closer to the Wen than the rest, so Jin Zixuan was sent. The Jiang's were the weakest of the great sects and didn't have any close ties to the others, so they reluctantly sent Jiang Wanyin, hoping he didn't draw ire upon them. The minor sects also had to follow along. Even if they protected their heir by sending them to Gusu, they would still face backlash, and they could not stand up to the Wen's might.
Not long after the indoctrination started, information spread about what transpired during the young masters' time in the Wen sect. It was hard to keep quiet when many were preparing funerals without even a body to mourn. Wen Chao took their weapons the moment they arrived and had their night hunting for him. His last and most fatal hunt woke up a deformed Xuanwu. Using a young woman from a non-gentry family as bait after beating the Jin sect heir, the tortoise was drawn to the smell of blood, and it went crazy, eating as many people as possible. Finally, the Wen cultivators retreated from the cave and locked the other sects inside to hide their crimes. No one knows who thought of it, but the disciples could get out through a hole in the lake. Having to swim through their friends' and families' dead bodies was traumatic for the teens. One flipped out, causing a disturbance in the water, reawakening the great beast. Only a handful of people escaped.
A conference would be held in the cloud recesses to discuss their current situation.
~~~

Wei Wuxian was currently in a seaside town in Laoling. Jin territory was still relatively safe for him to travel through. He kept his sword hidden in his qiankun pouch and wore his traditional black and red robes. This was an area he hadn't traveled through a lot, so luckily, he wasn't too well known by the locals. At present, he was out gathering information for the Lan sect. It wasn't safe for cultivators, especially those from the Great sects, to be out wandering, with the Wen sect being as ruthless as they are. Since Wei Wuxian was not part of any sect, he could move a bit more freely, and he told that to the Lans. Lan Wangji and Lan Qiren attempted to persuade him to stay within the Cloud Recesses, to stay safe, but eventually, he was able to convince them that he would take precautions, and if he felt he was in danger, he would let them know.

Wei Wuxian did not find much information in that little port town, so he spent his morning gathering seashells on the beach as a present for Lan Wangji before moving on to the next town. He sent his daily message to Lan Wangji, letting him know he was still safe and that no Wen movements have been found in the area he was in. Arriving back in town, he saw the citizens were anxious and whispering to themselves. Going to a tavern that he had visited the night before, he asked the waiter what had happened, making everyone panic. Wei Wuxian was told about the massacre of Lotus Pier.

Oh.

He didn't know how to react to that, sitting in his seat numbly. Wei Wuxian spent a few years living there, and though not every memory was good, there were still people he cared about there. The waiter told him everything he knew about the situation; the main family was able to escape, but Madam Yu died in the fight. No longer will she be able to wield her mighty whip again. The heir, who attempted to save his mother, has a damaged core, and about 90% of their disciples were killed. Jiang-zhongzhu evacuated the rest with the group of seniors he had with him as he was out before everything went to hell. With the conference coming up in the Cloud Recesses soon, Wei Wuxian was sure war would be declared against the Qishan Wen sect. He had to do something. He didn't know what, but too many people have lost their lives already to greed and arrogance. Once the waiter left, Wei Wuxian took out ink and paper and wrote a message to Lan Wangji. He would need help to achieve his plan.

~~~
"KILL THE WENS!"
"THEY KILLED MY SON! THEY DESERVE TO FEEL HIS PAIN A THOUSAND TIMES!"
"WEN RUOHAN NEEDS TO BE KNOCKED OFF HIS PEDESTAL. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!"
Shouts continued to ring out around the hall in the Cloud Recesses. Parents of deceased children and those wronged shouted out their anger as they finally had people to listen to them. Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen sat at the head of the room, listening to the masses. They were able to escape the fate that the Wen's had tried to lay upon them because of the genius boy their youngest brought home. When the screams became unbearable, they silenced everyone, starting the meeting to get allies on their side. With the Jiangs weakened and the Jin's on the fence because of their relations with the Wen sect, this meeting was not going the way people wanted. Many cultivators called Jin Guangshan a coward for not wanting to fight back as his son could've been dead as well. He tried placating the others, but it didn't work out in his favor once Nie Mingjue joined in with the crowd.
The doors of the room suddenly opened, and in walked Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, leading a group of displaced cultivators who have had their homes destroyed by the violence of the Wen sect and several rouge cultivators who have also felt the effects of the Wen tyranny, coming to pledge themselves to the cause of stopping them. The morale in the room boosted as their numbers were bolstered, but that still wasn't enough to sway certain people to join the newly dubbed Sunshot Campaign.
Wei Wuxian still had one more trick up his sleeve, hoping that this wildcard would not only influence the more hesitant people but change the course of the war. Making eye contact with Lan Wangji, the two moved in sync to bring a person in a cloak to the forefront of the group they just led.
"Grandmaster Lan, there is another group of people who would like to join us in this fight. Please listen before passing judgment."
Lan Qiren frowned before nodding his head. As if on cue, the person in the cloak took off their hood, revealing themselves. Wen Qing stood in the middle of the room, looking at the present crowd with no fear, only determination. Multiple people stood up, unsheathing their swords, pointing them at her, and shouting curses and death threats. At the hostility, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian stood before her, hands on the hilt of their swords, ready to defend her if anything was to happen.
"Wei Wuxian! You brought a Wen to this meeting and dare to protect her? You were there when the Cloud Recesses were under attack! How can you side with them?!" roared Nie Mingjue.
"You're right. I was in the Cloud Recesses when it was attacked. I was also in Qishan and witnessed the oppression from Wen Ruohan to his citizens. His tyranny didn't just begin with us; you should know this. He's been preparing this for a long time, and the other Wens received the brunt of his attacks, "Wei Wuxian stated.
Nie Mingjue stood quiet at the pointed attack towards him. He did know that Wen Ruohan had been preparing for a war for a long time, his father a casualty in the grand scheme of the Wen sect leader's mind. No one else spoke, as Nie Mingjue didn't respond yet.
"Sect leader Nie," spoke Wen Qing, bringing all eyes on her. "I understand that you don't trust my family, but fighting and winning this war is more important. So I hope you can put your grievances aside. Even if the Jin sect joins the war, you will all still be outnumbered by Wen Ruohan's forces."
"What do you suggest?" Nie Mingjue asked, ignoring the Jin's in the background who balked at Wen Qing's insinuation that they were cowards. Jin Guangshan sat with a frown on his face, but he wasn't going to say anything. After all, if this "Sunshot campaign" fails, his sect will still be fine and prosperous. The others can't judge him if they don't have a sect to live in.
"I am going to defect, creating a split in the sect. There are already factions inside the Sun Palace, and many more disciples have lost at least one person to my uncle's madness."
"And you think they would follow you?" Lan Qiren.
"I know quite a few would. Even if it's not a complete split, it still lessens their numbers. The majority of the healers would join me. You can't fight a war without medical aid."
The group of assembled cultivators pondered the situation for a moment, some breaking off into conversations about them being able to win now, others still resisting to work with those from the Wen sect, another group called out the Jin's cowardice as Wen Ruohan's niece was raising the flag of rebellion against her own family.
"What do you want in return for your help?" The Nie sect leader asked, silencing the others.
"Peace for the noncombatants, the dissenters, and the non-cultivators. We've been under the strict rule for a long time. I refuse to dethrone one tyrant and replace them with another, let alone from another sect. We will recreate a new path, whatever form that might take. I ask that you leave us our land and some valuables to take care of our people."
Nie Mingjue looked towards Wei Wuxian again, their eyes meeting. "Wei Wuxian, you trust her?"
"With my life," he said with no hesitation.
Nie Mingjue closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His tongue felt heavy with the words he never thought he would ever have to say. "The Nie sect stands with the Wen defectors," he yelled in a booming voice.
"The Lan also stand with the Wen defectors," spoke Lan Qiren, shocking others in the room. "Wen-guniang, this is our first time meeting, but I have heard good things about you from Wuxian and Wangji. Thank you for the herbs you sent us; they helped immensely," he said, bowing to Wen Qing, who returned his bow.
Jiang Fengmian stood up next, "Yunmeng Jiang stands with the Wen defectors. A-Xian, you have always had a good reading on people. I will trust you in this matter as well," Jiang Fengmian acquiesced. Jiang Wanyin stood at his father's side, face changing colors in his anger, but he said nothing.
One by one, minor sects started agreeing. Even if they were reluctant, they weren't going to be the ones to speak out against it when everyone else was choosing to side with the Wen defectors. The Jin's were still undecided on their stance until the end when they switched, but people ignored them to focus on the weakening of Wen Ruohan's forces. At the end of the meeting, everyone signed a document to participate in the Sunshot campaign.
A week later, the decree from Wen Qing came calling for the exodus of people who did not support Wen Ruohan. Safe zones were set up for people in Qinghe, Gusu, and Dafan for those that wanted to flee from Wen Ruohan and for those who wanted to join the war efforts. More people than expected escaped from Wen territory. It became so bad that Wen Ruohan had to hold people hostage to ensure no one else left his army.
Wei Wuxian came from one of the camps located at the base of the Cloud Recesses, where he was passing out rations when he arrived back to see Wen Qing and Wen Ning speaking to Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen. This was a regular sight, but what caught him off guard was the Wen sibling's clothes. Instead of the white and red that they usually wore, they now were wearing black and red. Approaching them, Wen Ning and Lan Xichen smiled at him as they showed off the new robes for the Wen defectors.
"Xian-ge, do you like our new robes?" Wen Ning asked excitedly.
"They're great. Why did you choose these colors?"
"What other colors would we choose? This was your idea, and you're my second in command. Of course, we'd take your colors for our new sect," Wen Qing said conclusively. Wei Wuxian felt choked up at her words. Our sect . It felt surreal. He left a great sect because of the mistreatment from the elites, wanting to roam the world and be free from rumors and hierarchy. Yet here he is now, a part of a new breakaway sect and being wholly welcomed in two other great sects. Swallowing hard, he nodded, and a bright smile graced his face.
"Let's get to work!"
Chapter Text
Wei Wuxian walked into the tent meeting the eyes of the other sect leaders. The war was in full gear now and they were meeting once again to go over the battle lines and discuss the rations in each encampment. Wei Wuxian was there not only as Wen Qing’s second in command but as their weapons supplier. It was important that he knew what every camp's stock was for his talismans and if the barriers he applied were holding up. No one outside of him, the Wen siblings, and the Lan family knew the details of how to create and set up the array to keep their territory safe from the Wen’s. If anything were to happen, he would need to be notified immediately.
Listening to the sect leaders speak, he made mental notes to address once the initial once-over was finished, when he looked up to see gold eyes looking at him. Sticking his tongue out teasingly, Lan Wangji responded with a raised eyebrow. The pair continued their silent conversation, trading different minute reactions. Wei Wuxian coughed to hide a laugh when he was called on by Lan Qiren.
“Wei Wuxian, do you have anything to share from your scouting?”
“Yes, Grandmaster. There is a Wen contingent approaching the eastern border and will have arrived within two days. Their forces are on a smaller scale. Based on the enemy's movements, I believe that they're sending more reinforcements to Yunmeng to hold control over the area.”
Jiang Fengmian had a troubled look. At the moment, reclaiming Yunmeng was not a top priority for the Sunshot Campaign. He understood and waited for the right time but it was still frustrating. The people who killed his family and disciples were living comfortably in his house while he was depending on the kindness of others. Releasing a deep sigh, he nodded and the conversation continued.
“A small village is located there. I would like to request that I and a small contingent of Wen defectors go there to evacuate the villagers.”
“Is there a reason why you only want the defectors to go with you?” asked Nie Mingjue.
“Because it's a Wen village. I think it'll be easier for everyone involved if we were the ones to deal with it.”
Nobody disagreed. There were still plenty of cultivators who were eager to get back and hurt any Wen they came across - the remnants of the Jiang sect in particular. The approval was given and the meeting continued on till the sun was high in the sky. Once the meeting was over, Wen Qing and Wei Wuxian went to pick their most capable people and flew off towards the village. There was a cave system that Wei Wuxian discovered a while back during his travels and the plan was to set up the villagers there until the fighting ended and they could go back to whatever was left of their homes.
Touching down, the group was immediately under scrutiny, the black of their robes standing out in contrast to the white of the villagers. This didn't deter them though as Wen Qing walked forward and introduced herself and where she could find the elder. There was silence for a while, with no one daring to speak. Again Wen Qing spoke out warning them of the impending danger when an elderly man approached the group.
“We have heard your yelling, but we will not move. Wen-Zhongzhu may not be the best, but he’s better than his predecessor. We will not return his kindness by stabbing him in the back and running away like you!”
At his response, the other villagers chime in their displeasure.
“You cultivators only care now that his madness is affecting you!”
“No one came to the defense of us small villages as famine and illness killed our loved ones!”
“This is our home! We haven't left yet and we won't now either.”
The Wen defectors have troubled expressions, but they hold strong knowing that they have to listen to the truth. While they sat cozy in Nightless City, the surrounding villages were used for their resources and left to take care of their own problems. The illness that they speak of was curable and yet they did nothing because it didn't affect them personally. Once all of their grievances were shouted at the defectors, the crowd started to disburse, going back to their homes or tending to the fields. No one else would feed them if they didn't work.
In the thinning of the crowd, Wei Wuxian sees a woman with an infant in her arms, before she turns away. He chases after her until they reach her small house and she invites him inside for tea. He nods, thinking this was a chance to persuade her without the mob mentality. Inside, he sees a small shrine, the incense freshly burned.
“This is for my husband. He died a few months ago in the conflict. He never even got the chance to meet our son,” the woman says as she puts the kettle over the fire.
“I’m sorry for your loss. My name is Wei Wuxian,” he bowed.
“I’m Wen DaiLu. It’s nice to actually meet the People’s Guardian.* Is that why you’re here right now? To protect us?”
“I try to protect those that can't protect themselves if it is in my power.”
“How noble. And from someone so young as well. You live up to your title.”
“Guniang, please reconsider leaving. You have an infant son. Wouldn't you like to see him grow up? “
A somber smile sits on her face as she turns to the shrine, “This is my home. I’ll be here.”
Wei Wuxian tries reasoning with her some more. Even if it’s just one life from this village, he’s determined to save her. He didn't think that someone else could out stubborn him, as she never so much as budgets from her position or the smile leaving her face. Eventually, Wen Qing comes to collect him. He tries to argue but it's no use. It was time to leave. They did all they could, they would just have to pray that they followed their advice to hide in the cave system on their own. Rising back into the sky, a dark cloud hanging over the heads of the Wen defectors, they return back to the war camp with heavy hearts knowing the outcome of the villager's fates.
~~~

As predicted the fight starts in earnest a few days later and lasts throughout the night. Both sides have taken heavy casualties, but the alliance pulls through and secures more territory. After helping the wounded and sending off the dead, Wei Wuxian drifts off into a dreamless sleep. In the morning, he heads back to the Wen village with Lan Wangji in tow.

It was expected but the sight that greeted them still hurt. Homes burnt to the ground and the few that were left standing are scorched beyond repair. Windows and doors were wide open and anything of value that was there had already been stolen by thieves in the night. Wei Wuxian sighed, feeling guilty. If only he had tried harder, he could've prevented this senseless loss of life. Lan Wangji reaches up to place a hand on his shoulder and he gives him a small smile in return before moving away. In the center of the village Wei Wuxian starts drawing the sigil for his fertility talisman. It would help renew and purify the ground, nullifying the blood that soaked into the dirt. He hoped that someday, someone would move back to this village and start again.

Once finished drawing, Wei Wuxian pulls out his dizi and Wangji his guqin, and the two start playing cleansing, sending the souls of the villagers to a peaceful afterlife. Once finished, the two share a melancholy look and put away their instruments, getting ready to head back when the quiet atmosphere is broken by a shrill cry. The two nod at each other before dashing to the sound. Hidden behind shrubs and inside of a tree trunk is an infant in a familiar blanket. Wei Wuxian gently picks him up, trying to calm him down. When that didn't work, the pair rushed back to the war camp and took the infant to Wen Qing.

Wen Qing was startled by the sudden intrusion but understood the situation right away. She stood up and had them lay the baby down as she checked all of his vitals. It doesnt take her long to finish the check-up, turning her attention back to the waiting teens.

“He’s hungry and dehydrated, but he’ll be fine.”

Wen Qing wraps him back in the blanket they found him in and saw something stitched onto a corner.

A-Yuan . The one life he was able to save. Wei Wuxian breathes easier.

The time has finally come for the alliance to strike back and retake Yunmeng Jiang, securing their route into Wen territory. After receiving a letter from Jiang Fengmian requesting their aid, the Defectors arrive in Yunping raring to go. They are also eager to end this war and return back to their homeland. Jiang Fengmian greets them, receiving them warmly - especially Wei Wuxian.

“A-xian I’m glad to see you're doing well.”

“Likewise, Jiang-zhonghzhu. I hope you haven't had too much trouble out here?”

“We ran into some resistance, but we were able to fight back. Your talismans especially were helpful.”

As the conversation continues, Jiang Cheng’s scowl deepens. “We would've been fine without that garbage.”

“A-Cheng, stop. It’s because of Wuxian and the Defectors that we have gotten this far as is,” he scolds.

Jiang Cheng explodes. “Have you forgotten that the reason we lost our home in the first place is because of those Wen dogs?! And you’re not only asking for their help but bringing the ungrateful traitor as well. A-Niang would have NEVER allowed this!”

“And where did that get us?! Relying on the help of others to feed our own people,” Jiang Fengmian snapped.

The father and son stared at each other in shock at the former’s outburst, before Jiang Cheng stomped away silently. Jiang Fengmian took a deep breath and turned back around, his placid smile back on his face.

“I apologize that you had to witness that. Come, this way.”

He shows them to the area where they could set up their tents and their makeshift canteen. Once he leaves the Defectors quietly start unpacking, gossiping about the heated argument between the sect leader and his son. The war must have pushed Jiang-Zhongzhu enough to grow a backbone. Wei Wuxian tells them to focus on their tasks and that silences any more talk. Once they're settled, the leaders meet in the war tent to discuss strategy.

The plan is simple, Yunmeng Jiang disciples would attack from the water and the Defectors would attack from the skies using the cover of night to hide. With the approval of the sect leader, Wei Wuxian could place bomb talismans on certain buildings, taking out their opponents before they even knew what was happening.

The battle begins as planned. Buildings lit up the night one by one, the Wens fleeing in their confusion. They jumped on their boats, thinking they'd be safe away from raging fires, but were wrong as the Jiang disciples had already put holes in the bottom of the boats, sinking under their combined weights. The Wens flailed in the water making them easy targets to be cut down. The water turned red with their blood. They weren't safe on land or in the water as the Defectors descended from the sky taking care of those trying to escape on their swords.

The sounds of the Wen’s screams rang in Jiang Cheng’s ears and he delighted in it. They deserved this and more. He smiled. His home was finally back in his grasp. Knowing that their success was imminent, Jiang Cheng pushed ahead, breaking formation. In doing so he also pushed his own abilities. Using a particularly powerful attack of spiritual energy to cut down his foe, he felt a sharp pain in his lower dantian. He feels breathless as he falls to one knee, Sandu clattering to the ground. The pain disorients him and he’s too slow to defend himself from the Wen coming up behind him. He raises his arm, attempting to use his bracer to block an oncoming attack, but misjudges the placement and his arm is cut off at the elbow. It takes him a moment to realize what just happened, the sound of his arm hitting the ground drowned out by the fighting. Once the pain registers he releases an ear-shattering scream.

Wei Wuxian who is nearby hears the scream and rushes over, slicing the Wen cultivator down and grabbing Jiang Cheng by his robes. He carries him to the healers that are stationed outside of Lotus Pier and are waiting for any injured to be brought to them. Settling him down, Wei Wuxian yells out Jiang Cheng’s injuries so the healers can gather the necessary equipment. Hearing movement around him, Jiang Cheng looks around with crazed eyes and starts trying to fight back while yelling obscenities.

“I don't want or need help from any Wen dogs! Get the fuck away from me! I’ll kill you all!”

He shouted while laughing in a deranged manner. The healers stood still with a grim look on their faces. They could see the onset of a qi deviation, but there was nothing they could do if the patient didn't want help. Yes, they took an oath to help anyone but there were limits to how much abuse they would put up with. And just as they predicted, Jiang Cheng started bleeding from his eyes and ears as he continued to laugh maniacally.

Jiang Fengmian who arrived not too long after Wei Wuxian watched as his son slowly died of madness. He turned to the Wen healers and saw their hesitant faces and felt despair. Was he going to lose another family member in this war? His son wasn't the most pleasant person to be around and in fact, he actually dislikes him quite a bit but still, he loved him and will protect him as his father. Stepping in front of the defectors, he kowtowed begging them to save his son if possible. The Defectors startled at a sect leader bowing his head to them and shared an apprehensive look with each other before moving.

Terrible for him, but good for the healers was that Jiang Cheng was easier to maneuver after his excessive loss of blood. Putting him in a tent they closed the curtain on Wei Wuxian and Jiang Fengmian while they got to work. The sect leader sat despondently while they waited to hear anything back. Wei Wuxian on the other hand decided to stand guard, in case any of the Wen decided to pursue them. He watched the fighting continue from the distance and slowly but surely there were fewer and fewer people standing wearing Wen robes. He took a deep breath and exhaled. They would win this. It came at the cost of half of Lotus Pier but buildings could be rebuilt, and life wasn't so easily replaceable. The Jiang sect knew that well. He turned to Jiang Fengmian and wanted to give him words of comfort but nothing came to mind at this moment. He clasped a hand on his shoulder, as the older man did to him all those years ago when he was promised a family and safety. Wei Wuxian didn't know what his clasp promised but it was enough to get the sect leader responsive.

The sun started rising and with it cheers from the alliance as they had claimed another victory in a very strategic area. Soon enough the final battle would take place and they would all need to be in top form if they had any hope of defeating Wen Ruohan. Wen Qing left the tent, her sleeves covered in blood but not a hair out of place walked over to the two. “Your son is alive, but he will never be a cultivator again. His core shattered in the middle of the battle, which led to his qi deviation. He lost a lot of blood. We will need to do a transfusion. Jiang-zhongzhu, we would like to see if your blood is compatible with your sons.”

“Of course!” Jiang Fengmian shouted, standing up, ready to follow the Defectors leader.

Wen Qing nodded and turned to yell commands at her people. The fighting was over and that meant they had been injured inside of Lotus Pier. It was time to gather their things and move. Finished, she leads the Jiang leader into the tent in hopes that they can save Jiang Cheng’s life.

~~~
The reclamation of Lotus Pier is a morale boost for the rest of the Alliance. Finally, they can see light at the end of the tunnel and they are one step closer to ending this and being able to return back to a semblance of a normal life. Word spread quickly throughout the camps and even to the common folks. This is how Jiang Yanli found herself on a boat heading home for the first time in two years. She wasn't there when Lotus Pier fell, visiting her grandmother in Meishan. Once Meishan fell to the Wen sect, she was hidden behind the golden walls of Koi Tower. She has only seen her father and brother a handful of times since then as they have been away fighting. Jiang Yanli sighs. She can't wait to go home.
As the boat gets closer to the docks, she’s disappointed, to say the least. The lotus flowers are dead, her home nearly burned to the ground and the purple robes of Yunmeng Jiang are but specks of color in the crowd of black and red. Reaching the pier, she stands there, waiting for someone to come greet her and welcome her home. When it becomes apparent that no one was coming, she turns and thanks her agitated Jin escorts for their assistance, she walks through the remains of her home, a scowl on her face.
She stops in her tracks when she sees Wei Wuxian interacting with the Wen siblings. Even after all this he still had that stupid smile on his face, while her whole world has been torn apart. She turns away quickly, not wanting to see him so happy.
“Jie Jie!”
Jiang Yanli freezes when she hears him, eyes turning back in their direction. Wei Wuxian’s attention was still focused on the Wens - Wen Qing in particular as she scolded him for apparently doing something reckless. New jealousy burns in her core. Of course, he wasn't talking to her. He never called her Jie Jie, why would he start now? Jiang Cheng and she weren't good enough for him so he went and got replacement siblings. An older sister who would scold him harshly and a timid younger brother.
The trio turned in her direction as they felt eyes on them and they bowed to her. “Welcome home, Jiang-guniang.”
Jiang Yanli’s brow twitched, her face smoothing out, but the anger simmered underneath. They dare mock her like this? Giving them a hard look, she turns in the other direction and heads to her father’s office. The one thing that didn't change in all this chaos is his cowardice, hiding in his office while someone else is running the sect.vShe puts back on her mask, being the devoted daughter and sister, and knocks.
“Father, I’m home.”
Notes:
Hey guys, it's been a while since I've updated this fic. If you were here since the beginning then you probably guessed that I haven’t updated because of the whole plagiarism fiasco that was 2 years ago. wow does time fly. y'know a couple of times I came really close to deleting this story altogether because of that situation but in the end, chose not to and I'm glad I didn't cause I actually love this fic and apparently influenced others. Anyway, small update. I changed the chapter count from 7 to 6 cause I lost my original notes for this and dont know what the "6th" chapter was going to be about so I'll be ending it there. If you're an old reader, someone who found it while on hiatus or just joined in, thanks for taking the time to read my story and if you made it this far in the authors note you're amazing *keanu reeve's voice* ❤️❤️
