Work Text:
Rox let out a sigh as she watched Ethan lean back against his pillow, a huff leaving his lips as he tried his best to get situated in the bed.
“I hate hospitals.” He growled out, his fists slamming down on the mattress softly as he gritted his teeth together.
“You’re a doctor, Ethan, how can you hate hospitals?” She had never understood that about him, even after all these years.
“Still hate them.” She let out another sigh before pushing herself to stand. “Please don’t leave me.”
“I’m gonna go find out from Leanne when they plan on letting you out of here.” That and she kind of needed some space, his moaning and groaning was starting to become a bit much.
“Probably never.” If he could have sunk himself into the mattress any more he probably would have disappeared.
“Stop being such a baby.” She leaned against the door frame as she watched him make a face at her. “If you had just listened to me in the first place you wouldn’t even be in this predicament.”
“I told you, Rox, I didn’t hear you.” Rolling her eyes she pushed herself off the door frame and into the hallway, spotting Leanne the minute that she swept her eyes across the open space before her.
“Leanne!” She watched as the older woman swung her head in her direction and Rox offered her a pensive look.
The chuckle the doctor let out as she came toward her softened Rox’s heart a little.
Sometimes she forgot just how well Leanne knew Ethan’s annoying habits.
“Is he driving you batty yet?” Of course he was, he was like a small child or a caged animal.
“When can I take him home?” Not that home would be any better.
But at least there she could just shut him up in the bedroom and enjoy some peace and quiet downstairs on the catch.
And a glass of wine, maybe two.
“I’ll get his paperwork.” Leanne poked her head through the door and glared at the man before them. “You better listen to your wife better at home then you do in the field.”
“I swear I never heard her tell me to duck.” He huffed out, his arms crossing over his chest as he winced.
“Still, if I hear one bad report from her, I’m going to send your father over.” Ethan looked mortified and Rox couldn’t help but chuckle.
The relationship between Martin and Ethan had certainly improved over the past few years, but they still drove each other bonkers.
“I hate you. Both of you.” Rox watched as Leanne rolled her eyes before stepping back out into the hallway.
“If he gives you a hard time, call me.” She definitely wasn’t afraid to take her up on that offer. “And if you need anyone to watch the kids, Ariel is home all weekend.”
“Duly noted.” Not that she expected either of the kids to be the problem.
They had, thankfully inherited their listening habits from their mother, not their father.
“I’ll be right back with those papers.” And then she was vanishing off toward the nurse’s station and Rox found herself sighing before stepping back into the small room.
“You two are never going to let me live this down are you?” She smiled as she shook her head back and forth.
“Never.” Especially not when there was actual video footage of the whole thing. “Perhaps I should have had Jesse check your hearing while he was in here earlier.”
“My hearing is fine!” She highly doubted that sometimes.
“I told you to duck Ethan, three times.” And he hadn’t been listening and now here they were, about to spend their weekend doing absolutely nothing because he was nursing off a concussion and a small skull fracture.
“And I…” She held up a hand and shook her head.
“I know, you didn’t hear me.” He offered her a soft smile but she wasn’t buying it. “Next time, let me do the dirty work.”
“Yes ma’am.” He winked at her and she huffed.
Flirty always solved everything and he knew it.
This man was going to drive her to an early grave for sure.
