Jason's Fast Track Birthday Gift

Summary:

Jason doesn't like his birthday and generally doesn't want gifts. To bad his girlfriend is someone who deems that unacceptable.

Work Text:

Jason never really cared about his birthday, never had much reason to. Given that when his parents were still around, them remembering it was a rarity and afterwards, well, living on the street gave him bigger things to worry about.

Even after Bruce took him in, he never made much of his birthday. Sure, Alfred made an effort to celebrate the day and even Bruce did in his own way. For his part, Jason played along just not to seem ungrateful, but he didn't feel the need for all the ceremony. After coming back as the Red Hood, he felt even less reason to celebrate.

Unfortunately for him, he ended up with a girlfriend with a bubbly personality and very deep pockets.

“Bette, I appreciate you doing this for me, but I don't celebrate my birthday” Jason said, as he was being guided to a parking lot by his girlfriend, Bette Kane. Bette was not having any of Jason's pessimistic attitude.

“And I have told you I am not going to let you do that. You deserve to actually celebrate the day of your birth as anyone else does and I don't care what 'I had a crappy childhood' excuse you have”.

“But I don't see the need. Besides I feel like I'm being pampered and taking advantage of having a rich girlfriend. Like I'm some kind of gold digger.

Bette couldn't help but laugh at the implication “You make it sound like you're some trailer park floozy. You are not taking advantage of me and more then you took advantage of Bruce. Besides, what's the point of having a rich girlfriend if she can't spoil you? Come on, let me be your sugar momma.”

“My sugar momma?!” Jason said “Now I feel like someone's 'pool boy'.”

“Well thank you for giving me a few role playing ideas. Now come one, you're gift awaits.” Bette took Jason's hand and pulled him to the parking lot next to her penthouse. Jason figured what ever she got him had to be large.

The duo got the were Bette was guiding them to something Jason didn't expect “Is this a Firebird?!” Sure enough it was indeed a red colored Pontiac Firebird, one in pristine condition. Then again, given Bette was insanely wealthy getting one like that or having on restored would be little problem.

“Well, what do you think?” Bette asked, waiting for Jason's response.

Jason stood there, trying to find the words to say. He didn't want to put his foot in his mouth and don't get him wrong, he like the gift. It was just that it was a little much.

“What year is it”?

“1984.

“All original parts?”

“Mostly. There are a few more modern parts here and there. Now quit with the easy comments and tell me what you think.”

You noticed. Well, um, I like it. But babe, its just too much”.

“Jason Todd!” Bette wasn't one to shout, but when she did, you noticed “You stop that now! I do this because I care and I love you and after the crap that was, well, the vast percent of your life, you deserve some luxury for once”.

Jason knew that arguing anymore at this point was pointless. Bette was even more stubborn then he was. It was one of things that he loved about her. He reluctantly let Bette push him inside the of the vehicle.

Once in, Jason was amazed at the interior. He was no nostalgia buff, but he couldn't help but gush over how old school the the car was. Well apart from some of the more modern add-ons of course.

“It's...ok. I guess” Jason did a poor job of hiding that he actually did like the gift “I do generally like motorcycles over cars”.

“Well I can't roll around on a motorcycle while wearing a bikini, now can I?”

“Oh, I see. You did to get me hot and bothered. I see through your plan.” After a good laugh, Jason decided to get it over with and start the car.

The engine sounded alright, but not enough to judge. Jason then revved the engine up and damn if it didn't sound fierce, like a vicious beast. It was his type of sound. But a nice roar of the engine could only take a car so far. Decided to test it out, Jason put it into drive and bolted out of the parking lot, Bette holding on to the dash due to the suddenness.

Elsewhere in Gotham, Dick and Tim were walking down the street, shopping bags in their hands. As they were talking about Jason's birthday and how to get Jason not the grumble about it like usual. Their conversation was interrupted by the sounds of a fast moving car and it's driver.

“Suck it, bird boys!”

Watching the car speed away and collecting himself, Tim asked “What the hell was that”? Dick already knew the answer.

“Looks like Bette got that birthday present she said she was getting for Jason. Lucky bastard”
