Chapter 1: chapter 1

Chapter Text

Reki always loved Friday nights. They were their movie nights. Of course he and Langa always talked to each other at school and went over to the other's house to help with homework. Three times a week, they went to the skate park to practice, and of course they went to S together. It never mattered to reki what they watch, so most of the time he let Langa pick.

Langa seemed to like watching action movies and sometimes cheesy rom coms, which Reki never would have expected out of him. Langa was always filled with good surprises. As they shopped for snacks and soda at the local grocery store, Reki was thinking about what Langa might pick tonight. He wondered what kind of mood Langa would be in. He seemed calm so maybe he would pick out one of his favorite cartoons he used to watch as a kid in Canada. Reki always loved those Fridays. He got to see a little about what young Langa liked, and sometimes Langa would even tell him stories and memories he had when an episode reminded him of something.

Langa had been quieter than usual today; just listening to reki, which he was okay with. Reki loved to be around Langa and watch how his eyes are always so attentive whenever he talks, like it's the most important thing. It makes him feel special. A comfortable quiet settled over them as they skated to Reki's house with the bags of snacks they bought for today's movie.

They had purchased way too much- per usual- so Reki's little sisters were going to get candy tomorrow. Reki smiled at the thought of him and Langa giving them their favorite snacks and the twins' faces lighting up. He already knew Koyomi would pick out the extra pineapple flavored gummy bears, they've always been her favorite.

Reki was so distracted in his own thoughts, he almost skated right past his house. He took a sharp turn at the last second and hit a small rock, falling and dropping the bags.

At the last second, Langa grabbed Reki into a hug to keep him from falling, which was a good idea on Langa’s part, except the fact that he ended up falling onto Reki and dropping his bags of snacks too. Both boys stared at each other, eyes wide, hearts thumping loudly in their chests. They stayed like that for only a few seconds, but to Reki, it felt like forever.

Reki's face was bright red and turning darker every second that passed. “Umm… Langa?”

Langa's face was noticeably pink when he replied, “Oh- oh, sorry” he stuttered as he climbed off the redhead, sticking his hand out to help Reki off of the ground. “Here," he said, turning his face away from Reki so he couldn't see the ever increasing blushy red on his face. Reki quickly grabbed his hand and pulled himself up, dusting himself off.

“Are you okay?” Reki asked, looking up at his best friend.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks,” Langa mumbled. He always talked lower when he was embarrassed of something. Reki found it adorable.

“Well, should we get our stuff and go in?”

“Yeah” Langa rubbed the back of his head and sent a small smile Reki's way. How could Langa do that to reki? Who gave him the right to be that adorable? no...Reki couldn't think like that. He couldn't ruin what they had.

They pick up their things and Langa enters the house a few steps ahead of him, takes off his shoes, and sets his board down, then waits for Reki to do the same. His face was still dusted with a soft pink that made him look like he had been out in the sun too long. Reki convinced himself that's why Langa was so pink.

“So…langa,” Reki says as he slips out of his sneakers, “what movie do you want to watch today?” Reki puts down his skateboard and looks at Langa with excitement. This is his favorite part of the week, after all.

“Well there's this new horror movie that came out. It's called Candy Man and I've been wanting to watch it. Is that okay with you?” Langa looks at him expectantly, and Reki can tell he's really excited about this new horror movie. Reki has never been good at scary movies. He gets so scared. He had to quit watching A Quiet Place, although everyone he talked to told him they didn't think it was that scary.

“Sure, Langa! whatever you want is fine with me” Reki smiles. He had meant to say no, but he didn't think before he spoke and he can't chicken out now. and besides, he doesn't want to disappoint his friend. He saw how happy Langa looked at the thought of watching this movie with him. Langa was more important than the movie they watched.

The house was quiet, and Reki assumed his mom and sisters were out shopping like they usually are on Friday nights. The boys slip to Reki’s room and Langa shuts the door behind them. Reki shoves a pile of clean clothes off his bed to make space “Sorry about all the mess in here.” he says, slightly embarrassed.

“It's alright.” Langa says, looking around “Plus my room isn't any better.” He smiles at Reki. He smiles, and Reki melts. Oh no, here he goes again. He wants something he can't have. Reki tries his best to push that thought to the back of his mind as he goes to get them clothes from his drawers. He gets a big hoodie and sweats for himself, and for Langa, he pulls out a big shirt and a pair of lounge pants that are a little short on him.

Langa goes to the bathroom to change while Reki changes, sets up his laptop, and gets the snacks out. Just as he's finishing up and starting to get on his bed, Langa comes into the room. “Are you finished setting the movie up, Reki?”

“Yeah! It's all ready for us to watch.” he smiles at Langa as he walks over and sits down, swinging his legs onto the top of the bed. Reki grabs the chocolate covered dried fruit they found and Langa takes a bag of gummy worms.

Reki hits play. The movie intro starts. and he can already feel himself getting scared.

What was he thinking?
