The dog smelled like magic. It would be able to understand him and could do plenty of other tricks, too. It was a familiar, after all.
"Well," Ardyn said to the dog. "We're going to be great friends, you and I." He hummed quietly as he contemplated a name. Then he said at last, "I think I'll call you... Cor."

In which Ardyn is a witch (a very studious witch who insists he's only a scholar) and summons a familiar. That's all well and good, until he decides he wishes his familiar was human.
