Chapter Text
It's time you learned about the truth, come straight home after school.
Mio thought about this ominous note on the table she saw that morning. It worried her. Had she done something wrong? Her father, Light Yagami, was usually not as cryptic as this. Well, she was going to find out soon. Just ten minutes before school's over. She didn't notice whatever shenanigans Yuuko and Mai were up to behind her.
Returning home, the azure-haired girl noticed her sister Yoshino didn't show up to greet or annoy her. Either this was some elaborate prank of hers or she wasn't home. She wished she could say the latter was more likely, but knowing her. She tread carefully.
"I'm home."
Mio entered the room, seeing her father on the couch. He was hunched over, staring at the ground, fully dressed in his usual suit. He looked up, eyes meeting hers. His eyes were that of a firm determination.
"Sit down." He said.
She did so, and Light Yagami spoke again, "Do you know about Kira?"
"That killer who showed up one day and started killing criminals around the world?"
"Do you know what happened to him?"
"Well, you said you caught him, right?"
There was a pause.
"I didn't catch him. I am Kira."
And another one.
"Huh?"
"I am Kira," Light said, "In 2003, I began killing criminals through a supernatural means, to work towards a new world. I spent so much time doing this and avoiding detection that I began to push away my family. But then I met your father, Sonic the Hedgehog, and I knew I couldn't do this forever. That's why acting as L at the time, I set up a scapegoat so I could properly retire from being Kira and devote more time to the ones I love. Especially you, Mio, when you were born."
"...You're...You're kidding, right? What are you saying?"
"No," He produced a black notebook, "Touch this, and all will be clear."
Not sure of what to make of all this, she did what she was told and reached out.
Fingertips connected with the dark, cold abyss.
And in a blink, it appeared. And she screamed.
A tall, humanoid creature, with black feathers from it's shoulders sprawed out in every direction. It's yellow eyeballs seemed to bulge out of it's head, with red pupils, above its contorted smile which bare two rows of unnatural sharp teeth.
"Heya, nice to meet ya, Light's kid, I'm Ryuk, the shinigami."
Mio stumbled backwards, before steadying herself. Sure, it looked intimidating, but if it was greeting itself like that, it wasn't any hostile. Still, it was hard to respond as if she was talking to some random Joe on the street.
Light turned the notebook around, revealing the title DEATH NOTE scratched onto the surface, "This is Kira's killing power. It kills whoever's name is written in it. I used to spend all day writing the names of criminals in this thing."
This had to be a prank. But not even Yoshino had a sick sense of humor like this. Her father couldn't be-
"You're a mass murderer."
"I was only cleaning up the filth from this world. You know how much people Kira's saved."
It was hard to agree. All her life, her father had condemned Kira, pulling out every possible argument against him, how could he have been the one carrying out that naive ideology?
Her breath got heavy.
But, all this aside,
"Why are you telling me all this?"
"Because Steve from Minecraft has returned."
She shut her eyes.
"I'm...I'm sorry, I need to process this."
And with that she politely excused herself from the room.
Light let her go, without saying another word. Ryuk cackled watching this unfold.
"Looks like you've gotten soft, Light."
"Everything is still going in accordance to my intentions. It's only that they've changed."
Mio made her way towards the front door. Putting on her shoes, she opened it, and stepped out onto the street.
As soon as the door shut behind her, she burst into tears, running down the road. The more she thought, the more she realised she didn't know what was going on. She didn't want to think. Just run. Run. Be like the hardest rains, unthinking, the strongest storms. A thought. She had to talk to him. Free in the wind. Did he know? What did he know?
Need to talk to the Knight of the Wind.
-
Sonic the Hedgehog noticed the speed discharge in Tokisadame.
"Woah, that's no good!"
"What's wrong, Sonic?" Tails asked.
They were doing their daily warm-up run through Metropolis Zone, because Tails would have lost his shit if Sonic decided to go through Green Hill Zone for the 12th time that week. This also meant they were a good distance away from Tokisadame.
"Someone's goin' fast! Really fast!"
"Isn't speed like, your thing?"
"Yeah, but it's uncontrolled! I gotta stop it before it hurts anyone!"
And followed a sonic boom that decimated half of the area as our favorite blue hedgehog ran across the earth.
-
A strange feeling.
All her momentum had disappeared, but there was no sense of inertia.
Mio blinked, and noticed she was in the presence of her father.
"Jesus, what's wrong, sweetheart?" Sonic asked, "It's not like you to run so fast when you get emotional! I remember last time I did that, I caused an electromagnetic pulse that knocked out all the power in that town!"
Good times, huh?
She didn't want to talk for a bit, so for a few seconds their exchange was just them standing there while Mio was sniffling.
"Do you know about dad's black notebook?" She asked, finally.
He didn't answer. The next thing she knew she was standing in the next town over. Before she could get out any confused noises, Sonic said, "Shit, this is bad news! Your speed discharge alerted the Ender Dragon from Minecraft. Sorrygottago!"
Light Yagami heard the doorbell.
"Hey, bet you're glad to see me!" Sonic greeted him. If not for that, Light probably wouldn't have noticed him at first, seeing as how the Blue Blur was so short.
"I am, darling." He said, "But what is the occasion?"
"The Ender Dragon from Minecraft's gotten off the wrong side'a bed! I'm evacuating the town. And I know what you want! Even if you're too shy to say it. Get ready, bae," Sonic hopped up into Light's arms to give him a kiss, before hopping back off and carrying Light to safety in the next town over.
Soldier 8 watched as the town of Tokisadame came into view. "It seems the device they gave me is working after all." He shouted to himself. It's not like the Ender Dragon he was mounting would be able to understand him, but the flying was so loud that he desperately needed to hear his own voice over the deafening wind.
As he came closer, he realised the town didn't seem to be bustling as one expected it to be.
"It's just as they predicted," He said, scanning around for something, "And now I should be able to find...There!"
He noticed the blue dot and pulled out his telescope, locking onto it. Target revealed: Sonic the Hedgehog.
"Hey, the park rules say your pet should be leashed!" The blue blur said.
Soldier 8 looked around as the dragon slowed to a hover a distance over the town, just out of Sonic's jumping range. It seemed the town was empty, and none of the Cube Energy detectors on him were going off.
"Did you evacuate the town?" He asked.
No reply.
"HEY!" He tried again.
"WHAT?" Sonic shouted back.
"ANSWER MY QUESTION!"
"WHAT QUESTION!?"
"DID YOU EVACUATE THE TOWN!?"
"WHAT! COME CLOSER! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"
Irritated, Soldier 8 commanded the Ender Dragon from Minecraft to descend, and proceeded to be startled when he heard a voice from behind him.
"Hah! I can't believe you fell for that!"
The soldier turned around, "What the hell-"
"I don't think this overgrown lizard's much scary when I'm up here." Sonic the Hedgehog said, tapping his foot on the back of the dragon, "Now! If you don't mind, the Mobius Association's doing a survey and we'd like you to answer a few simple questions!"
"Why you-!" He reached for his gun, but his hand only gripped thin air.
"Looking for this?" Sonic said, disabling the gun. In his younger days he might have twirled it in his oversized hand, but a few trigger accidents(and one 'Shadow the Hedgehog' incident) meant he wasn't going to make that mistake again, "You seem to be forgetting I'm the fastest thing alive!"
"We only took a few minutes to get here!"
"A few minutes' all I need, pal! Now, who sent ya? Steve from Minecraft or sumthin’?"
The kingdom sent Soldier 8 because they knew he was a loyal one. Not a blue rat under 3'4 was going to get anything out of him.
"The one who sent me is..." He tapped a button on the device before Sonic could realise, and it fell apart.
Meanwhile, Light Yagami was in the middle of looking for his daughter in the crowd of impromptu evacuees. They were mostly confused, having been relocated to this next town over in the span of a few seconds, and the commotion was endless.
A blur appeared past him, and directed his eye to a lamp post somewhere infront of him. There, a man in a green jacket, with a hat labelled '8' on it, tied up with a note. He walked over and, seeing as the man seemed to be unwilling to respond, he picked up the scrap of paper and read it.
Heya, my deLight,
I found this guy riding the Ender Dragon from Minecraft
Mind finding some stuff out about him? Still need to take care of dragon
~Love, your favorite blue hedgehog
Well, it wouldn't be hard extracting information from this guy. Light did have years of detective experience after all, some as L. Just need some time and space to communicate... "Dad?" Mio seemed to have found him, instead. "Are you alright?" "Yeah." "I'm glad." Light stood up, as if to receive a hug, but it didn't seem the girl was over what happened earlier. He sighed. "I should tell you about Steve from Minecraft."
"I met Sonic the Hedgehog when I was working at the task force. After I got rid of L, I felt a bit...Empty, you see. Sonic provided me a world I didn't spend much time in. We weren't the same, he loved to be free, I was bound by justice and honor. But we both had a sense of justice, and that's all we needed. One day when Sonic was running through Green Hill with me in his hands he saw a figure. It looked like a giant lego figure, but without the protrusion from it's head, or crab hands. It was just standing there.
We investigated it, and we quickly realised it was Steve from Minecraft. He was dormant, so we tried to figure out a way to keep him from waking. Steve from Minecraft isn't human, so the Death Note won't work on him, and we figured the best course of action was to launch him into the sun.
But then Herobrine appeared."
"We managed to fight Herobrine off, but not before he awakened Steve from Minecraft partially. I say 'partially', because Steve from Minecraft didn't immediately start causing destruction. My hypothesis is that he was unable to gather his full power from being woken up too abruptly. But if he's managed to summon the Ender Dragon from Minecraft...
Oh, right, I think I should start from the beginning."
"Steve from Minecraft is the one who created our world. He built everything from his Minecraft powers. At first, the world was made of blocks and squares. He was lonely, so he gave life to humanity to companion him. Humanity didn't like Steve from Minecraft, so they beat him up and put him into a deep sleep. When he was defeated, the world ceased to be blocky, and they sealed his power into two wooden cubes."
Mio's eyes widened, "You mean-!"
"Yes. The wooden cubes that are in your possession."
"So this means...Wait, that's not dad's voice! That's Herobrine!"
"That's right," Herobrine said, standing on top of the lamp post, "And what can you do about it? We meet again, Light of Yagami. It was a foolish choice to give the wooden cubes to your daughter."
He teleported to the ground, separating Mio and Light. He wore a cloak over his blocky body, which accentuated his glowing white, blank eyes.
"You are the fool here, can't you see it's two against one?" Light Yagami said, before punching Herobrine in the face.
"The cubes belong to Steve from Minecraft." Herobrine said, unmoved by the punch. He swiped at Light Yagami and he was sent flying into the air, "And two against one? You expect your daughter to fight me-"
A sound of impact rung through the air as Herobrine hit a wall. "What the hell!"
"He means me!" Sonic the Hedgehog said, before kneeling down by Light, "You alright?"
"Y-Yeah. It's just a flesh wound."
"I don't think that's a flesh wound, bro!"
"Whatever."
Sonic kissed him on the forehead before turning to face Herobrine again. "I'ma tell ya this ain't gonna go down like last time. I have a Speedforce and I'm not afraid to use it!"
Herobrine slowly got to his feet. Mio felt uneasy just watching him. No, this wasn't just an emotional thing, she was feeling unwell. What was going on-
"Mio! Get your dad and bring him to safety!"
"Oh, alright!" She ran over to Light, and Herobrine leapt towards her, reaching for the wooden cube in her hair. The attempt was thwarted by a kick to the face by our favorite blue hedgehog, indisputably,
"Truly, the fastest thing alive." He said, in midair. He disappeared for a split second, reappearing on his feet, "It looks like you won't be letting me do what I want."
"You're gonna pay for hurting my husband! You've started the party, are ya' gonna finish it?"
Herobrine didn't reply, instead smirking. This is going all according to plan.
Mio wasn't exactly sure where she was running to, figuring she was just going to find the closest place that looked safe and lie him down there. But her dad might need medical care after taking a hit like that. In that case, she'd to have feeling woozy thoughts line off. Think can't not sure.
"Hey, dad?"
"Mm?"
"Welcome back to another episode of the Survival Multiplayer."
