The Language of Love

Summary:

Kara asks Lena to teach her Irish. Lena decides to teach her a very special phrase.

Notes:

The fact that Lena's never got to speak Irish in the show meant I had to write this.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"Teach me." Lena seemed surprised by this.
"What?" She asked with her eyebrows raised higher than Kara had ever seen before.
"I want you to teach me," Kara answered in a determined tone.
"Kara, I spent 14 years of my life learning Irish and I still struggle with it sometimes," Lena replied. "How am I supposed to teach you the entire language?"

Kara and Lena had just finished eating breakfast in their roomy apartment when Kara had shocked Lena with her bold statement. It all started when Lena had told Kara the Irish word for friend was cara. Kara had been so entertained by this that a wave of enthusiasm had washed over her which had led to her outburst.

"Okay fine, don't teach me the whole language," she answered. "Just teach me a phrase."
"A phrase?" Lena repeated inquisitively. "Okay, I can work with that." Kara could see the wheels turning in Lena's head as she tried to come up with a phrase. Kara's excited grin and wide eyes made it perfectly clear to Lena that she had high hopes for what Lena was going to say next.

"Here's one for you," Lena started. "I'll say it nice and slowly so you don't get lost." What followed this was what Kara could only describe as the most beautiful sentence she had ever heard. It didn't help that it was coming out of the mouth of the most beautiful woman in the world. "An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas?" Even hearing Lena saying it felt like magic. The way Lena had said it, slowly and seductively in her signature sultry tone. In one sentence Lena had brought Kara to her knees.

Kara's mind raced with thoughts of what it meant. All she knew was that it was posed as a question. What kind of question though? Probably something beautiful like "Will I love you as long as an ancient tree loves its leaves?" or "Can my heart be full when everyday I fall in love with you all over again?"

Lena could see that Kara was trying to figure it out in her head so she decided now was a good time to cut in. "Now you say it."
"Me?" Kara replied in a bewildered tone.
"No, the other Kryptonian I fell in love with," Lena answered while trying and failing to hold in a laugh.
"Very funny," Kara responded. "Okay then, here goes." Lena could see the concentration in Kara's face when she repeated the phrase. "An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas?"

"Was that okay?" Kara asked. The way she was standing with her arms by her sides and her eyes downcast reminded Lena of a nervous student waiting to get their grade on a class test.
"It was perfect," Lena answered. The next sound that came out of Lena's lips was not what Kara had been expecting. Lena started to Laugh uncontrollably and Kara could see her whole body shaking with laughter.

"What's so funny?" Kara inquired wondering if she had got the pronunciation wrong somewhere.
"I'm sorry Kara, it's just…" Lena struggled to say between fits of laughter "You just asked me if you could go to the toilet." When Lena said this she began to laugh even more and Kara could see tears forming in her eyes.
"I thought I was saying something romantic!" Kara exclaimed and all of her anxiety suddenly turned into shock and outrage.
"I know but I just couldn't help myself," Lena replied while slowly regaining some of her composure. "I just wanted to see the look on your face."

"Well there's not much to see," Kara responded in a determined tone. "I'm not even embarrassed right now."
"Your flushed red cheeks would suggest otherwise," Lena answered while wiping a tear from her eye. This made Kara go an even brighter shade of red and Lena had to use all of her inner strength to not start laughing all over again.
Kara crossed her arms before defiantly saying "Just wait until I teach you Kryptonese. I'm gonna make you say something way more embarrassing."
"I love your game plan babe," Lena replied. "Maybe you shouldn't tell me about it in advance though."

"Well instead of that I'm not gonna let you kiss me for a month," Kara said proudly thinking she had managed to get her own back on Lena.
"Oh really?" Lena said while she moved closer to Kara. "But I just bought this new shade of lipstick and I wanted you to be the first one to taste it."
"Ta...Taste it?" Kara said while realising that in the space of a few seconds she was already coming dangerously close to letting Lena kiss her again.

"Yep," Lena responded while her lips moved inches closer to Kara's. "It's cherry flavour," she whispered and Kara felt like they were about to do a lot more than just kiss. "But I understand, rules are rules. I don't know if I'll even have any of this lipstick left by the end of the month but I guess we'll-Lena found herself being interrupted by the intense feeling of Kara's lips on hers. The kiss was slow and full of passion. It wasn't just sparks that flew every time they kissed, it was more like a million different fireworks exploding all at once. All in perfect harmony, each one in unison with the other.

"Breaking the rules already?" Lena said after they finally managed to pull away from each other.
"No, I didn't break them," Kara stated insistently. "I said you couldn't kiss me for a month. I never said I couldn't kiss you." As Kara said this a grin appeared on her face and her eyes seemed to light up with every word.

Lena wrapped her arms around Kara's hips and pulled her closer. "Oh well I guess I should have read the fine print."
"You really should have," Kara said teasingly. "Especially seeing as one of the terms is that you have to come with me to the bedroom right now."
When Kara said this she took Lena by the hand and started leading her towards the bedroom.
The only thing Lena could say was "Well if I have to, I will. It's only fair."
