Chapter 1: Surprise

Chapter Text

It’s been three weeks since the Slayers won the big cup, three weeks since Nicole first told Waverly she loves her and things were going great for everyone. A few days after the big win, Waverly had reluctantly moved out of Nicole’s home. Of course they hadn’t been together when Nicole had her away games, but it only took them one night after Waverly moved out to realize that being apart simply didn’t feel right. They made each other better. Despite that feeling, both Nicole and Waverly agreed that with their relationship being so you and Nicole not needing Waverly’s care anymore – she did miss their afternoon care naps immensely – they’d both be in their respective homes but would visit each other as often as possible. So when Waverly, Wynonna and Doc had to work from their office, Nicole would make her way over to Purgatory to spend the day with Alice and after work, some more time with the family before reluctantly making her way back to the Big City.

Everything was going great and yet Waverly couldn’t help but start to feel a little insecure. Whenever she came back from work, Nicole would give her a quick welcome back and mostly spend her time with Wynonna. And when she was in the Big City staying over for the weekend, Nicole often got whisked away on calls with Wynonna. Deep down Waverly knows she has nothing to worry about because Nicole always looks at her like she hung the moon and the stars but she can’t help but doubt herself. At first Waverly thought it was amazing, two of the most important people in her life bonding more and more but now it was starting to feel like her girlfriend would much rather spend time with her sister than with her. Nicole could sense Waverly’s insecurities and did her best to show her she loves her and promised they’d spend more time together soon and Wynonna made sure to let her know it was merely ‘some best friend stuff’.

Now, the time had finally arrived. It had taken a lot of effort and guilt to keep these things from Waverly and to stay away from her but Nicole’s plan was all set in place. Back when Waverly lived with her to take care of her, she’d listen to the brunette’s stories about history and what she’d love to do one day. Waverly was always blushing and ashamed when she’d just talked and talked about all these stories but Nicole always made sure to assure her that she has nothing to be ashamed of, that she absolutely loves listening to Waverly talk about history and her dreams. A few of these… well, they resulted in what Wynonna loved to call ‘Operation Heart Eyes’. Nicole called it her giant ‘thank you’ gift for her girlfriend but she had to admit that Wynonna’s ‘Operation Heart Eyes’ did sound more fun. Unbeknownst to Waverly, ‘Operation Heart Eyes’ was Wynonna and Nicole’s ‘best friend stuff’ and she would get one of the biggest surprises in her life very soon.

***

Waverly had had a long day at work and was never happier to see the homestead. She opened the front door and took off her jacket and shoes. Waverly was so exhausted that she thought she could hear Gus and Nicole talking in the living room. That’s ridiculous, she thought. Nicole wasn’t supposed to be over for another three days. She shook her head as if to shake off her thoughts and walked into the living room where she abruptly stopped upon seeing her redheaded girlfriend smiling at her with those dimples she loves so much.

“Hey, baby.” Nicole smiled as she walked to her to give her a kiss and envelop her in a hug.

“Hi.” Waverly squealed, holding the redhead a little tighter. “I thought I was imagining things when I heard your voice.” she laughed. “What are you doing here?”

“I missed you and wanted to surprise you after work.” Nicole said as she walked Waverly over to the couch to sit down.

“I missed you too.” Waverly said as she settled into her girlfriend’s side, taking in the calming vanilla scent. “This sure is a great surprise.”

“I’m glad you like it.” Nicole softly said, kissing the side of Waverly’s head.

“Hmmm.” Waverly hummed. She got startled when Gus cleared her throat. “Hey, aunt Gus.” she greeted her aunt sheepishly.

“Hey, girlie.” Gus smiled at the pair. “I’m gonna get something to drink. Do you want something?”

“Yeah, but I’ll get it.” Waverly said, starting to move in order to get up.

“Don’t be silly.” Gus stopped her. “I can carry a glass and you look way too comfortable in your spot with Nicole to disturb.” the older woman winked at the two.

Waverly blushed and Nicole held her a little closer. “Okay then. Some sweet tea would be nice.”

“Sweet tea coming right up.” Gus smiled as she walked into the kitchen. “Do you know when Wynonna will be back?”

“Nonna said she wouldn’t be too long. Doc finished up with Nedley and she only had a little bit of paperwork left after their mission this morning.” the brunette said. “Where’s Alice?”

“Okay.” Gus said. “Alice is-“ the older woman started but was excited by a very excited Alice running into the living room.

“Auntie Waves!” Alice squealed before getting onto the couch to hug her aunt.

“She’s right there.” Gus laughed.

“Hey, sweetie.” Waverly smiled, hugging her niece back. “How was your day?”

“It was great!” Alice smiled. “Nicole played in the yard with me and took me out for ice cream.”

“She took you out for ice cream, huh?” Waverly gasped, looking over at her girlfriend in mock shock, making her and Alice laugh. “That does sound like a great day.” she added.

“No worries, Waves. I’ll take you out for ice cream too.” the redhead winked, making Alice laugh even more.

“Good.” Waverly said contentedly, looking back at her niece. Then something hit her. “Wait.” she said, looking confusedly at her girlfriend. “I didn’t see your car. How did you get here?”

“Oh, I-“ Nicole started but was cut off by Wynonna swinging the door open.

“Hiya, everyone! I brought pizza!” the older Earp yelled excitedly as she made her way through and into the kitchen, followed by Doc carrying a couple boxes of pizza.

“Mommy! Daddy!” Alice squealed, getting off the couch and running to her parents.

“Hey, angel.” Doc and Wynonna greeted their daughter.

“Hiya, red. Fancy seeing you again.” Wynonna winked.

“You’ve seen Nicole already today?” Waverly asked, confusion all over her face. Wynonna nodded and started opening the boxes of pizza. “What’s going on?”

“So, funny story.” Wynonna started. “There wasn’t really a mission this morning.”

“What? But you said-“ Waverly started.

“I know, I know. I just needed something as a cover to go get ginger spice without you getting any more suspicious.” Wynonna explained.

“So that’s why I didn’t see your car.” Waverly realized. Nicole nodding to confirm.

“You guys coming to eat or are you just gonna stay there?” Gus asked, already sitting at the table with Doc and Alice.

“We’re coming.” Waverly told her aunt.

“Too many details, baby girl.” Wynonna said, receiving a scoff from Gus. Waverly and Nicole blushed, becoming almost as red as Nicole’s hair.

As Nicole led Waverly into the kitchen, Waverly stopped when she saw four suitcases in front of the kitchen island. “Do you and Doc have a longer mission coming up?” Waverly asked, pointing at the suitcases.

“Nope.” Wynonna said, popping the ‘p’.

“Oh. Are you three going on a trip?” Waverly asked, smiling at Alice.

“Nope.” Wynonna said again, popping the ‘p’.

“Are these yours?” Waverly asked her sister.

“Nope.” Wynonna said once more. “These are your and Haught-shot’s suitcases.”

“Uh…” Waverly breathed nervously. “Not that those aren’t nice but why would I need a suitcase?” Waverly half asked, half waved off.

“Because…” Nicole cut in. “We’re going on a trip.” she added sweetly, showing her irresistible dimples.

“Oh, sweetie. I’d love to but I got work.” Waverly said.

“Actually, you don’t have work.” Nicole said, putting one hand in her neck. “You have the next two weeks off.”

“Wh- What?” Waverly stammered, looking at her girlfriend and sister with wide eyes. “Guys, what’s going on?”

“You have the next two weeks off.” Wynonna confirmed Nicole’s earlier statement. Waverly didn’t believe what she was hearing and sought support in her girlfriend’s side.

“It’s why Wynonna and I have been spending so much time together. I hated not telling you anything and seeing you doubt yourself but I wanted to surprise you and properly thank you for everything you’ve done for me when I was injured and I needed Wynonna’s help to get it all done. Especially with taking the days off because we both knew you wouldn’t take so many off on your own.” Nicole rambled, a slight blush forming on her face as she said that last part.

Waverly looked in awe at Nicole. “Baby, you already thanked me so many times. You didn’t have to do anything. I love being with you and being able to take care of you.”

“I know, I know.” Nicole said. “I just really wanted to properly thank you even though nothing will ever be enough to show how grateful I am for you. I love you and you deserve the world.”

“I love you too, baby.” Waverly said tearfully, hugging Nicole tightly.

“You two really make The Notebook look bleak.” Wynonna said, earning another scoff from Gus.

Waverly and Nicole laughed as they broke their hug, Nicole wiping away a tear on Waverly’s cheek. “Where are we going and when do we leave?” Waverly asked, crying happy tears.

“We leave tomorrow morning. The rest is a surprise.” Nicole smiled at her girlfriend.

“Nicole Rayleigh Haught, I love you but how do you expect me to pack everything I need without knowing where we’re going.” Waverly gasped.

“No worries, baby. I made you a list so you’re fully prepared aside from not knowing where we’re going.” Nicole laughed.

“You’re really starting to rub off on Haught, Waves. She’s also become a planner.” Wynonna said, the others erupting in laughter.

“Alright. Before we get into any more details and questions, let’s eat. I’m kinda starving.” Nicole said, taking Waverly’s hand and leading her to their places at the table.

They sat down, Waverly next to Gus and Nicole next to Alice – per Alice’s request – who held open the box of pizza for Nicole. “Thank you, Alice.” Nicole smiled at the little girl.

Dinner went by quickly with them all laughing, talking about how their days went and a little about how everything was set up. When the table was cleared, Nicole gave Waverly her list of what she needed to pack.

“Babe, it says I need a passport. I don’t have one.” Waverly said a little deflated.

Wynonna came up behind Waverly and tapped her on her shoulder. “Here you go.” Wynonna said as she handed Waverly a passport. “We got it all done earlier. You’re all set to go once you’ve packed.”

Waverly looked in awe at her girlfriend and sister. “You two are the best.” she said tearfully.

“Thanks but we all know you’re the best of us, Waves.” Wynonna said, hugging her sister and bringing Nicole in as well who immediately put her arms around the two Earps.

“Group hug!” Alice yelled as she came into the kitchen and crashed into their legs. The three women laughed. As Nicole was the last to join in, she picked up Alice so she was higher up in the hug.

“Now… I believe you two have some suitcases to pack.” Wynonna said as they broke apart.

“That we do.” Nicole said. “Come on, baby. Let’s get you ready.” she added, taking Waverly’s hand to take her to her room.

“I still can’t believe you did all that, baby.” Waverly breathed as she and Nicole set to packing in her room.

“You deserve it so much, baby. You really deserve the world.” Nicole said, kissing Waverly softly on the lips. She broke the kiss and moved away to open the suitcases and put them on the bed.

Packing went surprisingly fast. The list Nicole had made was so detailed that they got it all done in seemingly record time for the youngest Earp. They put the suitcases in front of Waverly’s dresser and made their way downstairs where they joined the rest of the family for a relaxing family evening. Alice had insisted on sitting with Waverly and Nicole as she wouldn’t see them for a long time and had fallen asleep on them sometime between all the cuddles she got. Waverly and Nicole began yawning more often too and decided to call it a night. After Wynonna peeled Alice from them – the little girl somehow had a tight grip on both of them – they made their way to Waverly’s bedroom and settled in to sleep.

When Nicole got in the bed, Waverly immediately moved closer to the redhead. “I love you, Nicole.” she said sleepily.

“I love you too, Waves.” Nicole whispered, moving in to give Waverly a sweet goodnight kiss. “Let’s get some sleep. We have an exciting day tomorrow.”

Waverly moved even closer to Nicole. She now had her head in the crook of the redhead’s neck and sighed contentedly. “Goodnight, baby. Love you.” the brunette mumbled, sleep starting to take over.

“Goodnight, sweetie. Love you too.” Nicole whispered, kissing the top of an already-sleeping Waverly’s head. Merely a few minutes later, Nicole also fell asleep, holding her love close.

***

Waverly woke up to the feeling of Nicole gently kissing her forehead and letting her fingers trail over her arms. She opened her eyes and saw the most beautiful brown eyes look down at her.

“Good morning, love.” Nicole rasped.

Waverly shivered upon hearing Nicole’s raspy sleep-laced voice. She could never get enough of it. “Morning.” Waverly mumbled sleepily, cuddling into the redhead some more.

“Hmmm, not that I don’t want to cuddle with you…” Nicole started, hugging Waverly. “… but we have to get up, baby. We have to leave for our trip soon.”

Waverly smiled up at her girlfriend. “Hmm, I can’t wait to see what you have in store for me.” the brunette mumbled. “What time is it?”

“Just after six.” Nicole said with another kiss to Waverly’s forehead. “Our flight leaves at 10 so we have to get ready.”

“Hmm, yeah.” Waverly mumbled, moving to get out of bed.

They got out of their cocoon of blankets and got ready to leave. Already having everything packed certainly made everything easier. Seeing they had everything they needed from Waverly’s room with one last check, the pair made their way downstairs with their suitcases. They put their suitcases ready at the door and walked into the kitchen where everyone was waiting for them.

“Good morning.” Waverly and Nicole greeted the rest of the family.

“Good morning.” the others greeted as the pair sat down at the table and went about eating the breakfast Gus had outdone herself with.

“This is delicious, Gus.” Nicole hummed in delight.

“Thank you, dear.” Gus thanked the redhead.

The six of them continued eating their breakfast, happily talking about anything and everything. Soon it was time for Waverly and Nicole to leave. Gus and Wynonna would drive them to the Big City airport while Doc stayed behind with Alice. As they were saying their goodbyes to the cowboy and little girl, Waverly noticed Alice had tears in her eyes.

“Alice, what’s wrong?” Waverly asked, squatting down to Alice’s height.

“I’m gonna miss you guys.” Alice said, tears now flowing down her cheeks. Nicole saw what was happening and sat down on her knees to be more at Alice’s level.

“Oh, we’re gonna miss you too, sweetheart.” Waverly said, now also having tears in her eyes. She enveloped her niece in a big hug.

“We’re gonna miss you very much, Alice.” Nicole said when the two came apart. Alice moved from Waverly and hugged Nicole tightly. “We’ll be seeing each other again before you know it and we’ll text and do video calls, okay?” she asked. Nicole felt Alice nod her head in her chest. With one last squeeze, Nicole and Alice broke their hug and the redhead got up again.

“Alright. It’s time leave or you’ll miss your flight.” Gus said, car keys in hand. After one more quick goodbye and hug from Doc and Alice, they got on their way to the airport.

The ride to the airport went by quickly. During that ride was when Waverly’s nerves were really starting to kick in. Of course Nicole noticed. “You okay, baby?” the redhead asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just some nerves kicking in. I’ve never been on a plane before.” Waverly admitted.

“It’s okay. It’ll be fine, and I’ll hold you close all the time.” Nicole tried to assure her nervous girlfriend.

“I know. Thank you.” Waverly said, looking gratefully at Nicole.

“Alright, girlies. We have arrived.” Gus announced before getting out of the truck. The others followed and Nicole was quick enough to prevent Gus from taking all the bags out of the trunk. “I may be old but I can get your bags.” Gus laughed.

“You’re not old and I know you can. I just wanted to help.” Nicole said.

“I know you do, Nicole. Thank you.” Gus winked at the redhead and patted her on the arm. The two of them made their way to the side of the car where Waverly and Wynonna were hugging each other tightly.

“I’m gonna miss you, baby girl.” Wynonna said.

“I’m gonna miss you too, Nonna. Thank you for everything.” Waverly thanked her sister.

“You’re welcome.” Wynonna said as they broke apart. “And you, Haught…” she added in a slightly threatening tone. “Get in here.” Wynonna continued as she hugged Nicole. The redhead was taken aback momentarily but hugged the older Earp back. “You two better stay in contact and you better treat her right and watch out for her.” Wynonna said as she broke off the hug.

“We will. I promise.” Nicole said sincerely. “You can make puns out of my name again in person before you know it.”

“Good.” Wynonna laughed.

“Have safe travels and let us know something regularly so we know you’re fine.” Gus said in that voice only a concerned parent has.

“Thank you. We will.” Nicole and Waverly said.

“It’s time for us to go.” Nicole said. “Thank you for the ride and see you soon.”

“Yes, thank you for the ride, Gus. We’ll be back before you know it.” Waverly said, that last part for both Gus and Wynonna.

“Bye! Have a safe trip!” Gus and Wynonna said as Waverly and Nicole started towards the airport entrance.

“Don’t do anything I would or wouldn’t do.” Wynonna added cheekily, earning her a scoff from Gus who soon joined in the laughter of Waverly and Nicole.

“Bye, guys!” the pair said before walking into the airport.

It wasn’t very busy so checking in and going through security went smoothly and quickly. Now that they were looking on the board for their gate, Waverly would find out where they were going.

“Do you have any idea of where we’re going?” Nicole asked nervously.

“There are so many destinations on there that fit the description of what I had to pack, I have no clue, baby.” Waverly said, looking lovingly at the redhead.

“Hmmm.” Nicole hummed. “Well, I can tell you that it’s just one small – and I really mean small – part of the trip but… How would you feel if I said you’ll be seeing the ocean?” the redhead asked.

“Are you for real?” Waverly gasped. Nicole nodded. “You’re taking me to see the ocean for my first time ever?” Waverly asked, tears forming in her eyes. Nicole nodded once again, suppressing her smile. “Nicole, you’re the best!” Waverly exclaimed, wrapping her arms around the redhead, holding her tightly and letting her tears flow.

“Are you okay? Is that okay with you?” Nicole asked as they broke their hug and wiped away the tears on Waverly’s cheeks.

“Oh, baby. These are happy tears.” Waverly said. “You’re the best, baby. I love it. I love you.”

“I’m glad you like it.” Nicole smiled a bright smile, dimples showing. “I love you too.” she added, kissing Waverly on the lips softly. “And I found our gate.”

“Which one is it?” Waverly asked.

“E80” Nicole answered, looking at Waverly with heart eyes as the brunette checked the board for the location.

“San Francisco!” Waverly squealed, wrapping Nicole in another hug.

“We’re going to San Francisco, baby!” Nicole smiled at her girlfriend. “Let’s go.”

Waverly took Nicole’s offered hand and they made their way to the gate. Within a half hour of them waiting to board their flight, they could now enter the plane. Nicole held Waverly’s hand the entire way to the plane and only let go when they stepped foot on the plane. Once on board, Nicole led them to their seats. Waverly was shocked when she saw that Nicole stopped in the first class section.

“Nicole…” Waverly started but was interrupted by her girlfriend who sensed what she was going to say.

“You deserve the best baby and I wanted your first experience to be one in great comfort.” Nicole said sweetly.

“You’re the best, Nicole.” Waverly said with nothing but love in her voice and eyes.

“Thank you but you are the best, Waves.” Nicole said as they sat down.

Not long after, they were getting the safety instructions and were up in the air. Nicole held Waverly’s hand the entire time of the takeoff, rubbing soothing circles on her hand and whispering sweet and reassuring words to her.

The flight was good. Waverly was very happy that Nicole was the person she had by her side and came to find that flying wasn’t too bad. A mere three hours after takeoff, they touched down in a sunny San Francisco, both excited for what was to come.

***

It was 1 PM by the time they entered their hotel room. Nicole let Waverly go in first, anxious to see her reaction, and followed closely behind her while getting their bags inside.

“Wow.” Waverly breathed, walking over to the giant windows at the bed that offered them a view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

“You like it?” Nicole whispered, walking up behind Waverly and wrapping her arms around the tiny brunette.

“Like it?” Waverly asked in shock as she turned around in the redhead’s arms to look up at her girlfriend. “I love it.” she said, hoping her eyes conveyed how much she meant those words. “I can see the ocean. The view is so incredibly beautiful.” Waverly added as she looked back out the window over her shoulder.

“I agree.” Nicole said, still looking at Waverly.

Waverly blushed when she turned her head back to her girlfriend and saw that Nicole was only looking at her. She stepped up on her toes and kissed the redhead passionately. “Thank you.” she breathed out of breath when they came apart.

“You’re welcome.” Nicole smiled, kissing Waverly on her forehead. “You wanna go have some lunch?”

“Yes, I’m starving.” Waverly laughed.

“Let’s go explore the city then.” Nicole said as she took Waverly’s hand and started towards the door. “Oh, you might wanna grab a light jacket. I have some things planned and it could get a little chilly.”

“Wynonna was right.” Waverly said as she opened her suitcase to take out a light jacket. “You really have become a planner.” she laughed. She laughed harder when she heard Nicole gasp in mock offense.

“I mean- yeah, okay.” the redhead sighed in defeat as she grabbed a jacket for herself as well. “I guess that’s one of the perks when you have this amazing girlfriend who’s a great planner. Now I get to surprise her with everything I have planned.” she said as she put her arm around Waverly’s shoulder and led them out of their room to start their day of exploring.

“I can’t wait to see what you have planned, sweetie.” Waverly said, leaning further into Nicole. “I’m sure it’ll be amazing.”

The two got their rental convertible from the valet and drove to Fisherman’s Wharf. They decided to split chowder in a bread bowl and fish and ships at a cute little restaurant on the pier. After their lunch, they walked over the pier, checked out the shops and bought a few little souvenirs. When they came out of their last souvenir shop, Nicole put her arm around Waverly’s shoulders once more and led them towards the water where they could watch the sea lions. Waverly filmed a few funny moments from the sea lions so she could send the videos to Wynonna, knowing Alice would love those. They had been watching the sea lions and the views for a little while in silence when Waverly spoke up.

“It’s so beautiful here, Nicole. Look at the ocean back there.” Waverly excitedly said, pointing at the water and Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.

“How about we go explore it a bit better?” Nicole asked.

“I’d love to but we only have a day here. This has already been so incredible and it’s just getting started. I’m happy to see whatever, as long as you’re there.” Waverly said, wrapping her arms around Nicole’s waist.

“Well, lucky for us, I booked us a boat trip.” Nicole smiled.

Waverly looked up with wide eyes at the redhead. “Are you serious?” she asked, not believing what she was hearing.

“I am.” Nicole laughed, kissing Waverly’s forehead. “The tour leaves in about 20 minutes and we have to walk to the departure point soon. We’ll be on the ocean and that way, we’ll get to see some of the must-see sights up close.”

“I have the best girlfriend ever.” Waverly sighed into Nicole’s chest as she hugged her tightly.

“What a coincidence. I have the best girlfriend ever as well.” Nicole said, holding Waverly tight and kissing the crown of her head.

“You dork.” Waverly mocked playfully.

“Yeah.” Nicole shrugged. “But I’m your dork and you love it.”

“That I do.” Waverly agreed.

“Let’s go on a boat tour!” Nicole said, taking Waverly’s hand and walking them to the departure point.

It was only a short walk to the departure point. Waverly and Nicole got there with enough time to spare for a bathroom break and were two of the first people on the boat, meaning they could get the best seats. As it was a sunny day and fairly warm day, they chose to sit at the front in the open top of the boat. Soon everyone was on board and the boat slowly left its dock.

As they made their way into the San Francisco Bay, they were given beautiful views of the San Francisco skyline, North beach neighborhood and San Francisco Maritime National Park. The boat meandered along Fort Mason and past the Marina District, making its way to the Golden Gate Bridge. Waverly and Nicole were enjoying every second of it, Nicole especially when Waverly would squeeze her hand and make little squeals of excitement when she saw something stunning and heard its history. The redhead had gotten up and led them to the railing where they could take some beautiful pictures of the views and each other. As they sailed closer to the underside of the Golden Gate Bridge, being given a view of the massive structure only few people would get to see, Nicole snapped a few pictures of the brunette looking stunning in the sunlight with the bridge high above her and a little later, as she looked up at the underside in wonder. The boat made it out a little further and turned around in the waters where the Pacific ocean meets the Bay. They sailed past the Marin Headlines and Sausalito, continued along Angel Island State Park and cruised past Alcatraz. With Alcatraz being the last iconic setting of the tour, they slowly made their way back to the dock at Fisherman’s Wharf. Along this last stretch they could see the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and Coit Tower in the distance.

Waverly and Nicole made their way back to covered deck of the boat and Nicole offered Waverly her hand as they got off the boat.

“Thank you.” Waverly said, looking adoringly at Nicole. “That was amazing.”

“You’re very welcome.” Nicole said as she gave Waverly a side hug. “It really was amazing. I’m glad you liked it.”

“I loved it. And I love you.” Waverly said, kissing Nicole’s cheek.

“I love you too.” Nicole smiled. “Let’s get to our next adventure.”

Waverly squealed in excitement as she took Nicole’s hand and they made their way back to the car. The redhead drove them to Lombard Street, home to the infamous eight steep downhill hairpin turns with a postcard view. First the Nicole drove past it so they could get a picture and then drove them to the top of the section so they could make their way down themselves, which resulted in a few nervous squeals from the brunette as it is so steep. When they got to the bottom, Nicole drove them over to the Presidio.

Having gotten out of the car, Nicole and Waverly walked hand in hand into the park where Nicole led them over to Lovers’ Lane, one of the most romantic places in San Francisco. Waverly reveled in seeing the beauty and learning its history.

Lovers’ Lane was originally used by 18th century Spanish soldiers and missionaries to get from the Main Post to Mission Dolores as quickly as possible, making it the Presidio’s oldest footpath. The path is nothing if not enchanting and Waverly and Nicole took in its beauty as they walked, surrounded by the eucalyptus forest. They took some pictures of and with each other surrounded by the beauty of nature. They continued to walk hand in hand and came upon the Wood Line installation, a sculpture made from felled tree trunk laid to create a zigzagging work of art that you can walk on top of.

When they got back to their car, Nicole took them for a short drive to Crissy Field. The pair walked their way towards the Wave Organ at the tip of the Marina. They sat down, taking in the sun, the breeze and the sound of the waves. The Wave Organ is a massive sculpture consisting of 25 PVC and concrete pipes that act as a soundboard. Waverly felt like the luckiest girl in the world, sitting leaned into her love at the water, listening to the sloshing of the waves and the humming of the current through the pipes of the sculpture.

After a while of just relaxing and taking everything in at the Wave Organ, the pair started their way back to the car. After a stop to look at the Crissy Field view and get something to drink, they were on the road again to their next San Francisco adventure of the day.

Waverly got excited when she saw the Golden Gate Bridge come up close in the view, the closest they had been to the top so far. Nicole smiled contentedly at Waverly’s excitement, happy that she’s the one who’s able to put that smile on the brunette’s face. That smile turned into an astonished face and then into an even bigger smile when she took the turn to drive over the bridge and to the Golden Gate viewing point that gave the postcard pictures.

The pair stood there, looking over at the bridge, the view of the city behind it and the ocean to its right.

“It’s so beautiful.” Waverly gasped, taking it all in.

“Yeah.” Nicole breathed, only looking adoringly at Waverly.

“I meant the view.” Waverly jokingly slapped the redhead on her arm when she sensed her looking at her instead.

“Yeah, that too.” Nicole laughed. Waverly leaned into Nicole and they stood there a while longer to take it all in.

As it was evening now and getting closer to sunset, it was also getting colder. Waverly was grateful for when they got back to their car, Nicole held out her jacket for her, knowing she’d be getting cold.

“Hmmm, ever the gentlewoman.” Waverly hummed.

“I do try.” Nicole said as she opened the door for Waverly to get into the car. She then made her way over to the driver’s side, buckled up and drove them the short distance for their sunset activity. Nicole parked their car near the Golden Gate Overlook and got out her own jacket before locking the car.

“Where are you taking me now, love?” Waverly asked adoringly as she took Nicole’s hand as they started walking.

“Well.” Nicole started. “We’re going on a small hike to get down to Marshall’s Beach to watch the sun set at the ocean, with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.”

Waverly stopped walking, making Nicole stop as well. “Nicole.” she gasped, tears lightly misting her eyes.

“Yes?” Nicole smiled sweetly.

“We’re going to the beach and have the ocean at our feet?” the brunette breathed out the question.

“Yes.” Nicole said lovingly, kissing her girlfriend on the head. “There was no chance I was letting you not get to a beach and get your feet into the ocean, Waves. And Marshall’s Beach is one of the best and calmest sunset spots with the best view to do so.”

Waverly got onto her tiptoes and softly kissed Nicole on the lips. “I love you.” she breathed as she got back down, a tear having escaped her eye.

“I love you too.” Nicole said with so much love, wiping away the stray tear. “Now let’s go get in the ocean and watch the sunset.” she said as she once again held out her hand to lead Waverly to their next adventure.

Waverly gasped at the sheer beauty of the setting. Marshall’s Beach is absolutely stunning. Big rocks are spread over the stretch of sand, waves crashing in to them. They had taken of their shoes and rolled up their pants upon reaching the beach and the soft and cool sand felt amazing beneath Waverly and Nicole’s feet.

Waverly squealed as Nicole took her hand and started running towards the water. “Come on!” Nicole yelled, laughing at Waverly’s excitement. She ran them into the shallow water, her only care being the sheer happiness on Waverly’s face.

“We’re in the ocean!” Waverly exclaimed.

“Yes, we are.” Nicole breathed.

Waverly crashed their lips together in a passionate yet soft kiss. “Thank you.” she whispered as they came apart.

“You’re welcome.” Nicole smiled. “You stay right here.” the redhead said as she took some steps back.

“What are you doing, Nicole?” Waverly asked.

“Taking your picture. You look absolutely beautiful.” Nicole said. Waverly blushed at her comment. “Just stay right there looking at the ocean in the distance.” the redhead said. “Gorgeous. Can you turn around and face me?” she added. Waverly did as she was asked and let her girlfriend take her picture. The brunette now had her back towards water, the waves crashing into the rocks behind her and the beautiful golden hour light casting her and the bridge in a golden light. “You are stunning, baby. I’m so lucky.” Nicole said as she walked back to Waverly and showed her the pictures.

“I’m fairly certain I’m the lucky one.” Waverly said. “Here, let me take yours.” she said as she took her phone and stepped back to take some pictures of her girlfriend. When she was done Nicole joined her to look at the pictures. “This day has been amazing, Nic. Thank you for everything.” Waverly said sincerely.

“You’re welcome.” Nicole said. “Now I’m scared the rest of the trip won’t live up to this.” she joked.

“I’m sure it’ll be just as perfect.” Waverly hummed. “Speaking of… Will you tell me where we’re going?”

“Hmmmmm.” Nicole breathed, mimicking a thinking face, making Waverly laugh. “I’ll tell you when we get back to the hotel. Let’s enjoy the rest of our evening here first.”

“Okay.” Waverly breathed, leaning into Nicole.

“Wanna take a picture together, love?” Nicole asked.

“Yeah, baby.” Waverly hummed. “I wish we could take a full body one of us with the sun setting.”

“Me too.” Nicole agreed.

“Excuse us.” a voice came from behind them. They turned around to see an elderly couple smiling at them. “Good evening.” the elderly couple greeted.

“Good evening.” Waverly and Nicole greeted the couple.

“Can we help you?” Waverly asked.

“Oh, we don’t need any help but thank you for asking.” the elderly man said.

“We were walking by and overheard you talking about taking a picture together. If you want we can take it for you.” the woman offered.

Waverly and Nicole looked at each other and smiled. “If you don’t mind, we’d love it if you’d take our picture.” Nicole said.

“It’d be our pleasure. You two make a beautiful couple.” the woman said.

“Thank you.” Waverly smiled, handing the woman her phone.

“You’re welcome. Now let’s get your photos taken before the golden hour is over.” the woman smiled.

Nicole took Waverly’s hand and led her back into the shallow water. It was cold but so worth it. Similar to their own photos, they stood looking into the distance over the water and then smiling as the waves crashed into the rocks behind them and the sun covered them and the bridge in a golden glow. Thinking the woman was done taking pictures, they shared a soft kiss and gazed lovingly into each other’s eyes as they came apart, their foreheads still touching.

“Those two pictures are my favorites.” the woman exclaimed to her husband who agreed with her. “You two look absolutely beautiful and in love.” she said as she handed them back the phone so they could look at the pictures.

“These are beautiful.” Waverly breathed. “Thank you so much for taking our pictures.”

“They really are beautiful.” Nicole agreed. “Thank you.”

“You’re very welcome, dears.” the elderly woman said.

“Honey, we have to get going. Otherwise we’ll be late for dinner.” the man said.

“Alright.” she said, looking back at Waverly and Nicole. “I wish you two all the best and all the happiness together.”

“Thank you.” Nicole and Waverly said. “The same goes out to you two. Enjoy the rest of your evening.” Nicole added.

“Goodbye.” the elderly couple waved as they walked away.

“Bye.” Waverly and Nicole waved back.

The sun had now dipped below the horizon and it was now getting darker and much colder, making Waverly shiver. “Here.” Nicole said, taking off her jacket and holding it out for Waverly to put on.

“What about you?” Waverly asked, looking doubtful but cold.

“I’m okay. I’ll take some chilly air over seeing you cold.” the redhead smiled. Waverly gave in and put on the jacket on top of the one she was already wearing. She sighed at the warmth and vanilla scent she was blanketed in. “Alright, let’s head back. You hungry?”

“I could use some food.” Waverly said as they started their way back to the car.

Back at the car, they got rid of as much sand as they could. The pair got in the car and made their way back into the city to their hotel where they dropped off the car so they could walk the short distance to Union Square to grab something to eat. They both opted for a quick bite and decided on tacos.

After dinner, they walked around Union Square for a while and slowly made their way back to their hotel room. Once inside, Waverly jumped onto the bed and groaned.

“You okay, Waves?” Nicole laughed.

“Yeah, I’m okay.” Waverly said and sat up a little when Nicole sat down next to her. “I loved every part of today.” she said, kissing Nicole softly. “But now I’m tired.”

“I’m really glad you liked it.” Nicole breathed, looking lovingly at her girlfriend.

“It was perfect.” Waverly said, putting her head on Nicole’s shoulder.

“Thank you.” Nicole kissed Waverly softly. “I’m also really glad you’re tired because we have to get up very early tomorrow for our main trip.” the redhead teased, laughing as Waverly sat upright, smiling brightly at her.

“Will you tell me where we’re going?” Waverly asked, smiling sweetly at Nicole.

“I did promise you on the beach.” Nicole laughed. “You’ve talked about these places so passionately while you were taking such good care of me and I loved every second of all those stories and dreams that I couldn’t not take you there…” the redhead stalled.

“Nicole, stop teasing.” Waverly said in a cute impatient manner, making the Nicole laugh.

“We’re going to Florence and Rome, baby.” Nicole said, looking at her girlfriend with all the love in the world.

“Are you serious?” Waverly breathed, tears rolling down her cheeks as she smiled.

“Yes.” Nicole said, now having tears of her own seeing the happiness on Waverly’s face. “I’m completely serious.”

“Eeeh!” Waverly squealed. “I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.” she said as she tackled Nicole on her back and peppered her face with kisses. “I love you.” she said one more time as she got to her lips and leaned down in a slow and passionate kiss.

“I love you too. So much.” Nicole breathed when they broke the kiss. She giggled when Waverly couldn’t suppress her yawn, which made the redhead yawn as well. “Seems like we’re both pretty beat.”

“Well, we’ve had a very busy perfect day.” Waverly giggled.

“We did indeed.” Nicole agreed. “Let’s get ready for bed.” she said, pulling Waverly off of the bed and to their suitcases to grab PJs and get ready for the night.

Waverly was finishing up her bedtime routine and Nicole took this opportunity to send Wynonna their pictures. She immediately got a response, the older Earp saying they both look amazing and so incredibly happy and that she’d get cavities if they got any sweeter. “What’s got you smiling?” the brunette asked as she joined Nicole in the extremely comfy King bed.

“This.” Nicole said as she showed Waverly Wynonna’s reply. “I sent her the pictures just now.”

Waverly laughed at the response as well. “So what time do we have to get up?” she yawned.

“4 AM. I’m sorry it’s so early.” Nicole said.

“Oh wow, that’s early.” Waverly giggled.

“Yeah.” Nicole breathed. “But the flights are pretty long so we can sleep on them and you can use me as a pillow.”

“Sleep and using you as a pillow sounds very, very good.” Waverly said, eyes getting heavy with sleep.

“I knew you’d like that last part.” Nicole laughed. “Let’s get some sleep.” she said as she and Waverly got settled in the bed. “Goodnight, baby. Love you.” Nicole said as she held Waverly close and fell asleep.

“Goodnight, sweetie. Love you too.” Waverly mumbled, as she fell asleep in her favorite spot in the world.
