I was tempted to title this 'Chasing Joy' but it really doesn't feature much joy, except Matthew.
Ahem, yes, I indeed wrote a fic for this incredibly niche pairing, and I am not even sorry about it!!
I read the book In The Heart Of The Sea in like three days, and found out my boy Matthew Joy didn't stay behind on the island, but was the first to die at sea in the three boats after leaving the island. My brain went "I need this exquisite pain they denied me. NOW."Apart from Matthew's death at sea, the other stuff is mostly made up - surprise. The real man wasn't even injured like in the movie, but probably died of tuberculosis complicated by their ordeal or something. Matthew's father Levi really was a captain though, and the Two Brothers was a real Nantucket ship too, and said name was quite fitting, quoting Mr. Arthur Shelby- I mean Mr. Chappel, "Would you watch your own brother die?".
This fic features the sentence "God damn it, Matthew" a total of three times, because for some reason I seem to really like it a lot.
