Work Text:

Life sucked, recently.

Malcolm wondered on rare occasions about why it all had to go to shit once more when at last it was getting better. Well, yeah, he had finally gotten out of the Locker, chased then made up with Tobias while Bilgewater bay went on fire then gotten a new Destiny since the first one got sadly drowned during the whole ‘let’s blow up Gangplank’ night. Then all was good and promising now that he was free and ready to rob again with Tobias like back in their days.

But no, some sad ghost clown had decided to fuck the world up and make his problems everyone’s problems. Another harrowing had started.

In itself, Malcolm wouldn’t have found much to say and do about it until it hit Bilgewater and caught Tobias. Like, literally. It changed him and not for the best. That day was also the last time Malcolm saw him, when he had to give up for that one time and get away because that was like in their partnership, if one got caught, the other would always come back but prepared only. The shit show that sent him in the Locker taught them as much.

So yes, life sucked a lot.

Tobias was gone.

How was he supposed not to care now ?

Under normal circumstances Malcolm wouldn’t have cared about whatever that dark fog was and who caused it but now his partner was gone and the whole thing was awful. At first he didn’t understand any of it. Just that somehow that mist had its own magic – besides the ghouls and other ugly things it brought – and it could sort of possess people.

Real possession ? He had no idea, this was just so weird and crazy to start with but it still managed to corrupt Tobias when they got separated for a while and after that, it wasn’t pretty. It hurt so much when he found him. At the beginning, he thought that thing hurt the latter, did something physical but he was still able to stand. But changed, different. Malcolm needed such a long just to understand and not get too freaked out even way later.

Because it felt like Tobias was still himself.

That was the worst part. Aside the few signs a little too reminiscing of the Mist, Tobias was himself. But twisted. When before his eyes would glow light blue, now it had a very threatening green glint. If only that was the only change. That was only visual. There was literally no default knowledge about corruption or whatever the Black Mist did to people – which Malcolm learned only later – so he didn’t know what to expect. It was just so confusing to see Tobias respond and behave a little like his usual self except it wasn’t really him.

Or maybe too much ?

He said he was fine, better than ever. Already Malcolm felt like it was strange and he wanted to trust that gut feeling but at the same time, Tobias seemed almost normal. Almost. Only when he tried to get Malcolm to ‘follow’ him did it hit that it was dangerous actually.

Malcolm was no coward but he knew when to run and make a swift escape when everything went south. He still hated that decision of his even once it was over but could he really blame himself when the whole city was invaded by dark fog and attacked by some walking corpses and wraiths ? To his credit, he did try to get Tobias to run away with him since that was always the plan but the latter didn’t want to. Beyond mere refusal, it also looked like he was still shaken by the corruption thing, a flicker of control giving up so fast. Whatever was going on, it wasn’t easy on him and honestly, Malcolm hated seeing that happen.

When Tobias became forceful with him, it was time to just let go for a while and try to save his own ass. Also because he almost got immobilized by one of the latter’s cards.

So he had to escape.

The time that followed wasn’t the happiest, to say the least. Bilgewater was in a pathetic state, difficult to stay without risking losing life to the many ghouls and other nightmarish things that came with the harrowing. And now Malcolm had lost his partner and he had no idea what he could do and if he could even get him back.

In some last hope, he went looking after Missy Fortune but all he heard was that she had gone crazy. Probably the same thing that happened to his Tobias, only if he trusted the horrified words of some poor folks back from the city.

It haunted him.

After all, they hadn’t seen each other for so long and now they were set for a new time of partnership and other sweet things. All of this got ruined, so to say.

Solitude was horrible. Yes Tobias could be an asshole sometimes but they had sorted everything out after getting back together – in every possible way. No more lies or only small ones that didn’t risk to upset each other. Surprisingly, this was the healthiest point in the relationship they had ever found, mostly because it was damn difficult to get Tobias to open up and express his issues but from that point, all was going to be fine.

And then it wasn’t fine.

For a time Malcolm wandered, not knowing what to do. It was viciously awful because just like in the Locker, it dawned on him that it might not be easily solved – or even solved at all. Tobias might be gone or dead for real.

He wasn’t, in fact. Well, not really but that was still complex to explain.

Malcolm found many answers when he crossed the path of some Sentinels of Light as they called themselves, a group of fancy looking folks that did a pretty good job clearing the ghouls nearby. That was how Malcolm met them all and was later invited to work along once. It seemed that he could have a chance to do something and get his partner back, maybe.

All of this sounded like some stupid fairy tale, but the bad kind, the ones to scare children. After taking him to some old looking lighthouse, they explained a lot of things. Potentially too much for him to remember every detail. Everything, from that crybaby king to the former existence of the Blessed Islands, the harrowing and how it was happening.

What counted was that Tobias was still ‘alive’, somewhere. That was all Malcolm needed to know.

Also now he had a sort of goal, something to do. Alright, he wasn’t thrilled by the idea of working with other people who weren’t his life partner and only but something had to be done, this might be the price to get to Tobias again. Plus all the folks weren’t that bad, just a bit uptight and serious about all this and their mission. That one Vayne fellow often said stupid crap and could be hella insensitive but Malcolm had fun pissing her off. When she was on a good mood.

This wasn’t the important side. There he learned more about whatever managed to possess Tobias, some weird magic stuff unleashed by the same idiot responsible for the whole mess. That, Malcolm didn’t care about it. However, he might get Tobias back like before, without all the threatening behavior and greenish glow.

They said they had seen few of these cases, people who got their will taken away by the Black Mist. Some of the Sentinels had lost people they cared about dearly to it but kept hopes it could be undone. Potentially by dealing with the source of everything, Viego. Maybe another way but it was still very powerful. Nonetheless, some of the folks were convinced this strange curse could be ‘healed’ and every corrupted soul would be given a chance to be set free.

Some didn’t agree. Like that grumpy Vayne.

For her, it sounded like whoever got the misfortune of falling to the Black Mist was a lost cause, yet another pawn to destroy. Needless to say Malcolm didn’t agree with that since he had a lot of interest in checking if Tobias was really gone gone or just gone for a while. However she was great at what she did so surely that was why they kept her around despite her atrocious vibes. Malcolm could respect that but for once it was funny to have someone to annoy as much as Tobias annoyed him. She got pissed every time.

Back to the Mist and that sad ass idiot with a big sword. Or better focus on that other idiot with cards and too sharp tongue who was so smart he got corrupted. Malcolm would have joked about it forever but it remained a sore spot that they got forcefully separated once more.

Oh and by the way, he upgraded Destiny so she was more effective against all the undead stuff, good fun. It wasn’t easy but he made it, those Sentinels sure had a lot of weapons to give away.

From that point, Malcolm was a bit of a hero. That was an amusing thought for once, that he would end up doing good things, but only with the excuse that otherwise there would be no world to rob. Easy to say. The other motive was simply to get his man back, no matter what. That wasn’t easy since it couldn’t really be traced but as they remained in the area of the Serpent Islands, they would maybe find him.

With luck.

But wasn’t Tobias the luckiest guy to have ‘blessed’ Bilgewater ? Not that much anymore, he still got corrupted. Could it be because of his legendary luck ?

It was way deeper than that, Malcolm learned later. They said it wasn’t everyone who got turned into something else, at Viego’s service, to bring destruction and pain. A lot got killed during the harrowing. It seemed that the ones who might be useful were kept alive and corrupted until they all had the same goal. The end.

Not just because they had some kind of advantage that Viego could use, there was also this call for darkness. Fears and hatred, need for revenge and selfishness. So many reasons to succumb and let it take control over their free will. That part made Malcolm pause when he heard about it, bitterly wondering why between anyone else in Bilgewater Tobias got to be taken.

Fears. Something that Viego could miraculously solve.

What could Tobias have found in that deal ? Miss Fortune had accepted it willingly, it was said. His idiot of a partner ? Malcolm doubted he would do something like that, he was a lucky bastard enjoying the risk but not to the point of risking everything.

Would he ? Would he so readily accept to turn his back to Malcolm after all they went through ? After confessing again and being forgiven ? What a waste.

Or maybe he could have been counting on Malcolm to follow him. That was what he has asked, wasn’t it ? Stay together, in corruption. It did backfire on him beautifully though, Malcolm wasn’t that stupid and as much as he loved Tobias, he couldn’t just go with something that looked extremely dangerous and strange – as well as confusing when the harrowing happened.

There he was now, alone and silently hurt.

He had a sort of crew for now, they could maybe get shit done like that but he was also with a witch waiting to just snipe everything she deemed vile enough. He almost preferred the murder fish man, he didn’t say much but that was better than cruel words.

The question remained the same : where was Tobias ?

~

One day they saw him. Not for too long though, just enough for Vayne to bark some crappy things to the few corrupted folks who made a brief appearance before they were gone again – surely they had realized there were too many Sentinels in the area to fight.

Gone as quick. Funny to know Tobias still used his cards, although Malcolm doubted he would completely change his ways after finding that dark side.

What if Viego helped him unlock new abilities, since he literally had the power to take control over an Aspect ? No way to know, that day they didn’t fight, only keeping a wary eye on these dangerous folks.

For Malcolm, it hurt again.

At least he could be a little at peace, Tobias was still alive. To get his ass out of that mess was a problem for later, now he knew his partner wasn’t another corpse in the bay like they were almost promised to be.

That aside, his hair had gone white. Since Malcolm wasn’t expecting that, it took him a few more seconds to recognize the only man he loved in that poor world, more than he could think. Now the corruption really showed in Tobias’ appearance, not just in that looming greenish glow. His hair was white now. A detail, so trivial and yet it hurt to notice that it had such an impact on him, to the point of altering what he looked like.

What would be left of the man next time, if they got the chance to see him again ? Was it getting worse ? Would it consume everything until there was nothing left from the individual except the shell of a person ?

These questions haunted his nights, just like in these years of solitude. Instead of dreaming of revenge over imagined betrayal, now he worried about the effects it had on Tobias. Could he even hope to see him alive and well like before ?

Questions remained, adding up little by little.

Malcolm didn’t want to lose hope, he wasn’t the only one in their happy group who had lost someone and he didn’t want the others to even think about giving up. That Lucian guy himself got Senna back, everything was possible.

Whatever it took.

~

They knew it was coming. Too much agitation, too strange calm and of course by logic the Sentinels managed to ‘predict’ where Viego would next strike, more or less accurately.

It was coming.

Malcolm was going to find him after all that time being worried sick silently.

There it is. Damned thing.

The Black Mist was getting close, leaving a very cold feeling right before it. A sort of warning for any kind of living being. Run away or die. It wasn’t the first time Malcolm saw it but he despised it more than any kind of storm and the bearded lady knew how many storms hit Bilgewater every week.

This was different. Death floating around, getting closer, closer.

Where is he ?

A big fight risked to happen here but Malcolm almost didn’t care about that, he wanted to find Tobias before anything else. Some Sentinels agreed that if the possibility came up to free of one or several of the corrupted, it was to be seized immediately. For Viego, these people had nothing to bring except their use, no strings except to make them puppets. As many pawns to take back.

For now he was getting a little antsy. To stand there in the middle of one of the Serpent Isles wasn’t fun, especially when there was literally a dark nasty fog heading their way, soon eating the land.

Closer and closer.

« Malcolm… »

What the fuck ??

Hearing voices was new too but not that far from the fucked up things happening during harrowings. Destiny in hand and ready to shoot, Malcolm looked around in increasing worry, nothing to show but silent wariness.

Did he even hear that ? I don’t know ! He did hear things after so many years in a cell but this was crazy and it wasn’t a good omen to recognize faintly Tobias’ voice. Of course he would be an asshole even when evil.

Of fucking course…

He wanted to answer something and make that voice shut up but maybe that risked to look a little too crazy for the others nearby. Tension was so thick it could be cut with a knife. Everyone kept an eye on the Mist as it was about to surround them. The worst time ever was about to begin.

« Be ready ! » Senna called, although it wasn’t needed since no one was about to stop paying attention.

The key was to stay grouped. Together their chances of survival were higher. Malcolm knew that well but it felt like the Black Mist called for him again and again, like it never did before.

« Malcolm~ »

Oh for fuck’s sake !

Right in the timing to distract him, many ghouls appeared from darkness and rushed at them, ready to fall dead once more to their weapons. So began that special dance with death.

« Shit ! »

« Careful, sir ! There are more coming this way ! » The doll person called for him, though she was a bit far with most of the group.

Already Malcolm was getting separated from the rest like an idiot. Move ! Easy to say, not so easy to do when now ghouls and other disgusting things were invading the land and ready to tear them apart. First thing to do was survive, Malcolm couldn’t do everything at once.

Moving was the key, it was getting a little overwhelming to be attacked without a break. Less and less he saw and heard the others, although there was the very typical clash of battle resonating as well as the barbarian guy screaming like crazy somewhere.

It was too late when Malcolm noticed.

Wait.

First thing, there were no enemies anymore. No thing trying to bite him, nothing at all. No noise. Only very background sound of the sea but even that was quite muffled. All he saw was the Mist coiling around him like a snake, leaving barely the minimal space to turn around in near panic.

Fuck. That time, he could tell he was deep in shit. Too calm and no attacks of any sort.

Sudden wind came, causing a strong shiver to run his spine viciously.

« Hello there, looking for me~ ? »

Oh no. Well, more like the opposite but Malcolm sure had mixed feelings about it when he definitely felt someone embracing him from behind. No one else but his Tobias of course. Instantly Malcolm’s instinct took over, pushing at tad too violently the latter off him but since he had been with the Sentinels and all he hard learned, he wasn’t ready to fall so easily into that damned trap.

« Fuck you. » Old habits, like always. Usually it was some sort of not meant at all but right now, no idea what to feel.

« Oh I wish~ Maybe that’s why you made it all the way to find me ? »

This was such a vicious reminder for Malcolm about how hard this whole mess was. Done, he had found his partner turned ‘evil’ after a long time without each other but oh it hurt to hear him now. As if he had started mourning his loss in advance. No, this was worse. Tobias was still ‘alive’ but gone in a completely opposite direction. He wasn’t himself anymore and he was too much of himself at once.

What was he supposed to feel ? Why was it sadness before anything else ?

Malcolm wasn’t close to drop his guard, not now, not when so close to a damned gang of mad folks ready to ruin the world. Like on that tragic day, Tobias would surely try to get him to join.

Not a word came, he just glared at the latter, keeping Destiny ready just in case Tobias tried any funny business. What a complex time, it was like the early stage of their partnership when neither knew whether to trust or not the other but this time with a lot of history, in bad and good.

He lies like he breathes, careful. It had to be worse now that Tobias was at Viego’s orders.

Before anything, Tobias seemed to understand that distance was a touchy topic since every time he even gestured to reach for him, Malcolm quickly stepped back, keeping it safe. Instead Tobias circled him with that easy stroll of his, so uncaring and confident. That bastard even kept all his mannerism, tipping his hat a little as he seemed to wait for an answer but after a while it didn’t come. One detail that kept bothering Malcolm was the latter’s hair, too white. Not much but still a reminder of that dangerous path he was forced into. Or was he really forced ?

« No ? Dare I hope you’ve come to join me then ? That would be awfully lovely of you but I guess this cute group of friend you came with isn’t here just for a picnic and neither do you. »

« I’m not joining you and you know it. Would rather die than do that. »

For a time, that previous smile dropped, revealing something much darker than expected but soon enough the mask was back again and he found this perfect devil acting like before. Like in the old days. It had taken so long for Tobias just to trust him enough to be honest sometimes and not act like his outside persona.

« No, this won’t do, it would be such a waste. However I’m sure I can find a way to convince you… »

« No. »

« Is that so ? Don’t you love me, Malcolm ? »

Sadistic to the very end.

« …I do, that’s why I’m here. To get you back. »

« Oh so now I’m some sort of thing without wants ? I’m exactly where I want to be, it is only up to you to join my side. »

The more it went, the lesser Malcolm was sure that it would be positive. Conversation and bickering came so easily right like before but everything kept an edge, this was too important. Tobias acted nonchalant about it but the world was literally at stake.

« And I ain’t doing that. Sure it’s not that Viego guy who wants you here ? Do you even have some fucking free will ? »

Tobias clicked his tongue in reaction, seeming a little annoyed but easily brushing that off : « My presence here has nothing to do with him, I’m free to do whatever I want. »

« Liar, you’re just his puppet. »

They both knew to push each other’s buttons and for now it worked for Malcolm as well as the latter. It had to be a touchy topic since Tobias’ far too nice smile left for a more neutral expression, green eyes gazing at him as if Malcolm was some sort of puzzle to solve.

« Sorry to disappoint you but none of this is true, we are just… partners for now. Each has to honor the deal in a way. »

Partners. That one stung.

« So quick to replace me, I see. Well, your loss. »

« All holds in the ‘for now’. This isn’t meant to last, as long as I get what I want. »

Another flicker in Tobias’ expression at the mention of their partnership but once more it was erased without an afterthought.

« Ya know he’ll just discard you once you’re not useful anymore ? He doesn’t care about anyone except that poor queen of his. »

« But you do care, don’t you ? You wouldn’t have joined them just to feel like a hero, we both know you’re not made for this. » A few steps toward Malcolm but distance was put again, cautiously. Another form of refusal. « Why don’t you come with us then ? With me ? You’re literally here for me and I for you, why not solve this easily ? You only have to say yes. »

Why was it so difficult ? Had the circumstances been different, hearing this would have made him happy – quick to brush it off embarrassingly but happy nonetheless. Because Tobias was right on one point, they were both here for each other. However, the reasons weren’t the same and it came in direct conflict. Malcolm couldn’t even trust his partner, it might all be a trap to get him on Viego’s side, willingly or not.

« …No. »

This didn’t make Tobias happy, obviously. He came to a stop, looking at Graves with such a foreign expression, nothing could be guessed from that.

« I don’t understand. Why are you so stubborn about it ? »

« Maybe because I don’t want to die or just to see some idiot destroy the world ?? Did he fuck with your head so much that you can’t see that ? »

« But why ? Has the world done any good to us or to you ? Why fight when the solution is right there already ? »

He’s crazy. Sad to learn but Malcolm should have seen that coming.

« Because joining y’all would be better ?? What do you think will happen when he succeeds, or if he fails ? He literally wants to destroy everything ! »

« But we would be together. »

Just like that, silence muffled everything else. How could that bastard look so genuine when everything he had ever shown was meant to be fake, to better manipulate and control ?

Malcolm didn’t even know if he could get him back now. It felt impossible. Part of him wanted to walk away, there was nothing to find here in some stupid debate about good and evil. He did wonder if Tobias was genuine on that one part, about them being together. Always so convincing, it would be so easy to believe him and join the other side.

At what cost ?

« …Do you really think I’d be that stupid to trust you now that you got corrupted ? »

Tobias sighed, just like his damned self : « …I thought we had agreed that all was good between us. That we were honest and trusted each other. »

« Yeah but that would be in normal circumstances, not when one of us got fucking corrupted by a ghost. You’re literally trying to get me to join into some apocalypse, you idiot ! »

And what a time to remember that they were in yet another harrowing. Surely most of the crew was still battling for their lives and Malcolm was right there chatting with his ex – but not really ex.

I gotta help them, this is useless.

« Whatever, I’m done. If you have anything worth saying, don’t die until we meet next time. I’ll try not to. »

Just like that, he turned his back to Tobias and left. Which was difficult because it meant going into the Mist for a time and this was always awful but for now he had places to be and things to shoot at. It also hurt not to do what he was there for, to get his partner back. But could he even convince him ? Cure that curse ? After all that time looking for Tobias, now he had to turn away.

« Malcolm, we are not done. »

« Damn yes we are, for now. » He had to shout a little so it was heard clearly but he didn’t sound too angry.

The only issue came very soon, as he couldn’t see what Tobias was doing. They were both stubborn, of course Tobias would try some stuff again but would he even get to the point of using his cards. Malcolm had been hoping he wouldn’t but he got sorely disappointed.

« Stay. Here. »

Last warning. In a matter of second, Malcolm couldn’t move anymore, recognizing far too well the feeling. Yes back then Tobias had used his golden card a few times but very punctually and only when it was serious. Usually during heated arguments. Neither liked it but Malcolm’s way to deal with arguments had always been walking away before he risked to get physically violent – just in case.

Golden chains seized him now, keeping him from moving at all. At least he was a little used to that so he knew not to panic like an idiot but it wasn’t pleasant nonetheless. Plus this same corruption by the Mist could be seen, long tendrils getting mixed with Tobias’ fancy magic. Just another reminder and not a kind one.

« Alright, I see we’re not playing fair anymore, huh ? » Maybe he shouldn’t say that because Tobias using his tricks never was a good sign.

In less than a snap, he appeared right in front of Malcolm, radiating new anger and something so threatening it made the latter slightly worry for his own skin despite all they went through. Shit.

« Don’t fucking talk back when you’re the one being difficult. »

« You just used your cards ! I didn’t even shoot at you and you say I’m the one being difficult ?? »

« Because you won’t let me explain ! » He definitely lost his cool, grabbing Malcolm’s collar as he basically got in his face. « Why can’t you understand I’m doing all this for you ? »

« How is that for me ? You’re just jumping ship for a pathetic crybaby. »

« Because you’re all going to die ! »

For once it did shut Malcolm up but not for too long. It struck deep to see Tobias distressed to that point, if he was acting all along then he was extremely good.

« I ain’t dying, I know to look after myself. Just say you’re scared to die and took the deal to survive. »

Bad decision though. He found that so stupid from Tobias, who should have known better than follow that crap.

« You don’t get it, there is no hope ! You think you and your happy crew can stop Viego ? You have no idea how dangerous he is. » He kept tugging at Malcolm’s collar but this time not as much with anger than cheer panic : « Please, Malcolm, listen to me for once. I have seen things, he’s not kidding, he will ruin everything that can be. I struck that deal for you, so we can stay together. »

« How about just saying no and fighting back ? Never thought you’d be so scared of someone. »

« I’m doing all this to save your ass, shut up ! »

« And ? I can save myself just fine, how about you just follow me with the others ? Maybe there’s some easy solution to that curse of yours. »

It could have been funny to see Tobias so on edge, like that, maybe worried, maybe pretending but the setting wasn’t good and Malcolm seriously reconsidered whether or not to trust him after all.

He’s corrupted, don’t.

« This isn’t a joke ! Why do you think you’re still alive ? Because of our deal ! You’re not useful to him, you can drop dead and he won’t care. But I do ! …I got you a chance to live, it’s the only one. »

What. He never wished to join Viego’s side but it still stung a little to know he wasn’t deemed interesting enough to keep alive.

As if it wasn’t enough, now he couldn’t really ignore Tobias’ plea. It sounded almost true but what was true in evil ? I don’t know, why is it so complex… ? A mistake at that point would be tragic. It didn’t help that the latter came closer, too much for any acquaintance but for them it would have been fine. Almost intimate.

«  Just one smart decision for once. Please, Malcolm. »

« …I can’t. Y’all are causing too much damage already and life would just suck if there is nothing left. Go tell your Viego that he can shove it. »

« No Malcolm please… You don’t have to die just to prove a point or to act like a hero, it’s useless. »

« Ain’t going to die, I told you. Now let me go and wait for me, we’ll come back to get you home. »

H e shouldn’t have looked at Tobias but he did and it broke his heart so much to see that kind of worry. Not a word yet but it looked like treason. Only the time to register the shock. Then it turned into anger again, desperate fury. This wasn’t the same as pissing him off in their daily life.

Too bad for Tobias, there was a big flash of clear light before he could speak, blinding them for a short time.

« Graves ! Are you alright ? »

There came the moon lady, cutting through the Mist. As soon as she could, she caught Tobias and swiftly pushed him away, causing the chains to disappear too.

«  I’m fine, I’m fine. Just ran into someone. » Now free Malcolm got ready to fight, Destiny in hand. Honestly, he’d rather not use her but he knew Tobias wasn’t calm anymore.

Speaking of him, Tobias found his footing again and kept his distances, obviously not pleased with the interruption.

« Who’s that ? Is he… ? » Diana asked, staring at the enemy warily, crescent blade in hand and ready to strike.

« … My partner, yes. »

« We’re not done, Malcolm. » Said with much venom now that he didn’t seem to get what he wanted.

« Damn yes we are. Now go back to your master if you don’t want your ass kicked. I won’t but I’m pretty sure she will if needed. »

« Any weaknesses ? » She didn’t lose time, staying safe in case of attack.

Ah.

« Uh, he wouldn’t last in a fist fight. Just dodge his cards but please don’t hurt him too much. Not the face, at least. »

« Are you serious ? I’m right here. Tell the gal to mind her business, this is between us. » A few cards were taken, ready to strike too.

Uhoh. That was bad, usually Tobias wasn’t the one to get into a fight unless he really had to, this worried Malcolm a little about the outcome. He thought that just having an ally would make his partner reconsider but clearly not.

« ‘The gal’ will get involved whether you like it or not. »

Last words before she dashed at him with incredible speed, too fast for Tobias to move and protect himself. All happened a bit too fast for Malcolm too but in the end, he found the latter on the ground, arms locked in his back while Diana kept him down, holding her blade to his neck.

Shit. That was what happened when taunting an Aspect a little too much.

« Make a single move and you will regret it bitterly. » Her calm voice made a contrast with the tension of the scene, threatening but neutral nonetheless.

Malcolm was that close to whistle in reaction to the splendid ass kicking Tobias got but he didn’t as this wasn’t the right time. The latter didn’t seem to give up so soon.

« Let me go. »

« I won’t. Consider yourself lucky I am against slaying your kind. »

« She ain’t lying, Tobias. I know one who would have killed you on the spot. »

« Don’t fucking use that name. »

Touchy like usual, this time it was worse. Malcolm felt like making a remark but it looked like Tobias was already too worked up to have banter.

Not worried anymore, he walked up to them before kneeling and going through Tobias’ pockets.

« Quit moving. And you, what are you doing ? » It may confuse her indeed but she did a good job at immobilizing Tobias.

« Malcolm, for fuck sake, don’t… »

« Taking his cards. That’s how he escapes every time. Sure you’re not hiding more up your sleeves, Fate ? »

Only a snarl came, nothing else. It did seem to reach his brain that neither Diana or his partner would let him escape. Until he stopped struggling. Malcolm didn’t know what to think of that, it reminded him too much of that day when Gangplank’s crew caught them and almost killed them. Giving up, when there were no other escape possible.

I still have the blue one though. Never forgetting about it.

Now he got a lot of cards, keeping it for himself by safety. He didn’t like taking Tobias’ only way of fighting but it wasn’t like they had much choice. Anyway, barehanded he could still hurt him but not as much than a blade or a gun.

« …Happy ? »

« That’s better already. Now you choose, follow us or go back to Viego. I’m never joining him but you can come with us, we’ll do our best to find a solution. »

« …If you accept, we promise you’ll be safe from any harm. » Having witnessed the whole thing so far, Diana gave some reassurance while also keeping him from moving.

And yet Tobias said nothing, face against the ground, gaze lost afar.

Looks like he won’t try anything crazy. Maybe he would but Malcolm knew to handle him.

« Let him go. »

« Are you sure ? » She asked, just in case.

« Yeah, do it. Either he has a card and he won’t be our problem anymore or he has nothing to escape and he’ll stay. Still waiting for your answer, Fate. »

« Very well. »

She didn’t look very convinced but she did as asked, freeing Tobias’ hands. At first he didn’t do much, getting to his feet in silence and maybe brushing off the dirt that got on his clothes. All too usual for his character, it certainly amused Malcolm until he saw the latter suddenly walk to him and get in his face again.

« Hey, what now ? »

« Don’t you dare think you can get away so easily. You’re not leaving. »

In the corner of his vision, he saw Diana ready to step in, although Malcolm didn’t think it was needed.

« Go help the others, Diana. It won’t take long. »

Bad thing to say, Malcolm came to realize when it only angered Tobias. So Tobias slapped him.

« What the fuck is wrong with you ? » Alright, most of time Malcolm could be rather chill but this was going too far. No one liked being slapped. « And you Diana, leave ! It’s fine. »

He didn’t see her reaction as she said nothing but in a blink she was gone, surely thinking this was a mess and it was way better to deal with the ghouls. So it left him and Tobias here.

« No, you tell me what the fuck is wrong with you ! You act like all this doesn’t matter, like I don’t matter ! I did everything I could for you, I’ve lost my freedom, my will and my principles just so you can have a chance to make it out alive but YOU CAN’T BE BOTHERED TO TRUST ME. »

Was that all this was about ? Malcolm was struck silent. He did wish he could trust Tobias like before but trust was a luxury.

« …I trust you but with the whole mess, I can’t give ya the benefit of doubt. You could be just lying to get me to join. »

« …So you don’t believe me. »

Ugh.

If only he could not answer that. The issue wasn’t whether or not he believed his life long partner, it was about how he could get him back home safely. With everything considered, Malcolm had to give up on this one occasion. Tobias was too stubborn and wouldn’t see how wrong it was to follow him on that path. Honestly, Malcolm would have jumped on any kind of adventure or risky heist with him, just not the apocalypse.

Going so far, so close, only to turn back ?

In the end, he hadn’t answered at all because it felt like lose-lose whatever he might say. Silence told as much and Tobias looked as angry as before but with that first hint of emotion. It wasn’t the smooth-talker anymore, it sounded much more genuine.

« You don’t. » His voice broke for a few seconds before it got back to a more controlled tone but the damage was done. « You’re just like them. I thought you’d actually care, especially after everything I’ve sacrificed for you but no, you can’t even accept my single request. So what ? You’ve made it all this way to break it off with me ? » By the end it grew so cold, bleeding in his voice.

« Alright first, I do care, that’s exactly why I’m here. Second, I’m here to get you back home. Like before, without the Ruination and that damned idiot destroying everything. »

« But there will be no life ‘like before’ ! It’s all gone ! That’s why you have to come with me or you will die, it’s the only way to survive… »

« Or maybe we just kick his ass and the world is saved. Everyone that isn’t dead already will survive, all good. »

Really. It sounded so fucking stupid but so far the Sentinels had done a good job so they might as well entertain some hopes.

Not for Tobias though, he looked close to despair : « It doesn’t work that way ! If he fails, I’ll… You… He said he wouldn’t fail, we are bound to him until the end. »

« Hey, breathe, it’s alright. What will happen if he fails ? You’ll just be free then ? »

Malcolm tried not to freak out because honestly, he could count on one hand the number of times he had seen Tobias be so panicked about something. Never did he really fear something that much.

« He… He cannot fail. It’s impossible. »

« Well… You haven’t seen the others, I’m pretty sure they’ll kick his ass. »

« You don’t understand ! He had showed me… if he fails, there will be nothing left. »

« Nope, that’s if he succeeds. …He showed you things ? »

A shaky nod, all too scared.

« …When he made me accept the deal. »

Oh. That part was interesting. He also noticed that phrasing, ‘making him accept’. That didn’t sound very willing, it seemed that after all Tobias had to sell his soul.

« So he did fuck with your mind. What did he show ? »

Anger flashed in these green eyes, along some bitterness, maybe. Maybe it was tactless but Malcolm didn’t have time to be careful with his words, not when they were talking during a harrowing. He kept an eye on everything happening at the moment but here it was deathly silent, only the Mist as prison. Tobias seemed to take it wrong, taking a few steps back to the point that he had his back turned to Malcolm. Anxious, scared, no matter the reason, it mustn’t have been fun.

« …He showed me the end. There was nothing anymore, just ruined land and the river. » A pause came, standing at the limit of the Mist, face hidden as he was facing away from Malcolm. « And you were dead. »

Aw shit.

How could he doubt him now ?

No, for real, what was he supposed to do now ? It looked hard on Tobias, at some point he took his face in his hands. Deep breath then it was gone, he faced Malcolm again.

It didn’t make much sense but right now, he did what felt right, joining Tobias as he honestly looked close to tears, which was extremely rare. As soon as Malcolm got close enough, he leaned against him for very light support, all too silent but what could they say at the moment ? It was also a rough moment for Malcolm to realize that if all this was true then Tobias had literally given in to Viego so Malcolm wouldn’t die. Factually a bad choice but did he truly have the choice at all ?

« …You didn’t have to do all that for me, ya know ? » This was too close but there would never be any kind of backstabbing so he just got a little soft on Tobias since he was there.

« I didn’t have any choice. He broke the mind of those who tried to resist until the very end, they… » It got lost again in a shaky breath. « He promised me you would be spared, only if you joined our side. »

« This ain’t happening, you know it. We should go, Tobias. »

« Don’t leave me behind ! »

Compared to that whole whispered conversation, that last sentence got too loud and clear. Not just that, Tobias also had that desperate look on his face again, not even hidden under the corruption and reminders of the Mist. He clung to Malcolm’s sleeve, not ready to let him go.

« I’m not leaving you behind, come with us. I know some of them Sentinels suck and will try to kill you but I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen. »

« I… I can’t leave. »

« Damn yes you can, just stay with me. »

« No, he won’t let that happen ! I’m bound to him. »

Sure ? Malcolm wasn’t convinced. Anyway, it wasn’t like Viego would go that far to get one of his pawns.

« How do you know that ? Has any of you tried to ? »

Tobias grew silent, maybe he didn’t have any reason after except what the corruption required of him. Almost like the whole point of his corruption wasn’t to possess him but to give a proper reason to help Viego. A reason to reluctantly stay behind.

« …No. They feel no need to, as I should too. »

Hmm.

« You don’t ? » Maybe funny to ask but it could be a lead to a solution. « I mean, do you wanna leave ? With me ? »

So so close of his goal. Indeed, if he had better ways with his words like Tobias, maybe he would have managed to convince him way faster than that but life was like that, it couldn’t change. Being brutally honest and stubborn could help too, who knew ?

It’s not that difficult, say yes. If not, he risked to have to knock him unconscious for a while and carry him back with the Sentinels, which wouldn’t be practical at all. Though honestly, he had done worse before and if that was the price to get his partner safely then so be it. Please don’t make me do that.

It took too long to answer.

Honestly, he couldn’t really blame Tobias because he was literally corrupted by someone really powerful – despite sounding quite aware and not too crazy. It would make sense that he didn’t want to leave but not because of his own wants but because of what was required from him, or so he thought.

Many things crossed his expression, doubt and conflict.

« Come on, yes or no ? What should I tell you to get you to come ? » Yeah, good question. Maybe by being a little sentimental. Fuck it. They never knew when or if they would get to see each other again, it might be the last one. « …I love you, please come with us. »

…Yes ?

It had an effect.

Too bad it wasn’t what Malcolm wanted. Anything, maybe a kiss while emotions ran high, hell even tears would do, anything that would be a yes without being voiced. But no, instead he saw Tobias’ expression change to deep sorrow before he stepped back, putting some distance between them. He almost said something but didn’t.

« Tobias ? »

It worried Malcolm to see him step away, always meeting his gaze but there was still ineluctable distance.

« I can’t. » His words were too cold, too controlled. It didn’t sound like him anymore, as proved by that lingering glow in his eyes, getting stronger again.

Then he made a sudden move, revealing a card out of nowhere.

No.

Yes indeed, after all he still had a card. The time for Malcolm to realize, Tobias disappeared in that typical flourish, somehow dimmed by the corruption.

« Tobias ! »

It was useless but he ran a little, only it was far too late. How stupid, no one could stop his partner from escaping if he had a card. Now Malcolm was alone there, far too aware that his chance had slipped away.

Again.

« Come back, you asshole ! I’m not leaving without you ! »

Fuck…

Was he even sure that Tobias was still in the area ? Potentially he could have come back to that precious Ruined King of his, if he happened to be fighting too. Anyway, calling for Tobias was useless, he might as well scream at the void.

Not fast enough. Soon the Black Mist engulfed him, moving at once as many ghouls and wraiths rushed to him. Safe to guess they had been left at peace before so Tobias could have his shot at convincing him but since it didn’t come out positively, now everything resumed and Malcolm had to fight for his life.

Fuck it. Gotta find the others.

All that for nothing.

Well, maybe it was still a win that he got to see Tobias even for a short time but it did make everything so much more complex. It seemed to have only one solution left.

Viego’s defeat.

Until then, Malcolm had to stay alive.

~

Sorrows.

Why was it so difficult ? Being in love shouldn’t hurt that much but alas, there was nothing to be done.

Why couldn’t he understand ?

It was the ultimate sacrifice, everything he held dear like his precious freedom in exchange of eternity. Together.

Why say no ?

It didn’t make any sense. Why would he refuse such a golden occasion ? Why be so stubborn when the world was meant to end soon ? It was the deal of a life-time.

It was hopeless. Almost laughable if it wasn’t for the tragic consequences.

Time was running out.

Soon would come the final day, when at last Viego would succeed and have his Queen back to him. The day of the last fight with the Sentinels of Lights, since after all this Senna would have to give her fragment of soul. She was needed here, as well as that strange doll turned human. She too carried a part of the Queen with her, her love in a way.

Viego had talked about someone else who was needed to bring his Queen back but hasn’t said more about it. Not about that person but what they swore to protect. Everything else he already had.

Whatever.

How did that even matter to him ?

All that mattered was the deal. Eternal life against help. It was easy to discard Viego’s passionate vendetta against the world and Death herself, he was doing exactly the same but for his partner. Who wasn’t dead at the time but risked to find his end at every corner since he first decided to join the Sentinels.

Why ?

He could have just ran away and accepted to join them in helping Viego. It was so easy and safe for them.

No answer would come, it was useless.

The most he could hope was a miraculous change of mind before the final fight but again, they were both stubborn. It almost looked like Malcolm actually believed they would make it out alive and together.

Bullshit.

Even if somehow Viego came to fail – in great lack of luck because otherwise everything seemed to lead to his victory – then they would still die one day.

Mortality was just so frail and delicate, easy to break like glass.

Wasn’t it normal to yearn for eternity together ? Just this, one selfish request, one single decision not to suffer anymore.

Not to be left behind once more.

No solitude.

~

That time after the encounter was worse than anything before. Yes Malcolm got to see his partner, yay, but the issue remained and now it didn’t feel hopeful at all.

Tobias would rather run back to Viego than possibly join Malcolm and the Sentinels.

That hurt a lot.

Especially because it looked like a difficult decision, for both. Malcolm couldn’t just go with the man he trusted because it would mean the end of everything they knew before, no matter how sweet the promise to be together. The price to pay was too high.

For Tobias, it sounded like he didn’t have any choice at all, be it at the beginning or now. Forced into a deal and pushed to stay until the end. Bound, after all. It was almost an occasion to laugh at that poor irony, Tobias who among everyone else hated being bound to anyone or anything by contracts was now at someone’s service.

He didn’t have the choice, after all. He and the others who got corrupted were possessed, after all.

Malcolm’s feelings were pretty mixed.

On one hand, he missed Tobias. They were partners, against all odds and fate. It didn’t look it would have worked but it did, they were for each other the only person they could trust. Except this time he couldn’t. Viego seemed to be far too convincing. There was that thing about what he had showed and said to Tobias, things to come. And Malcolm being dead. The real question was whether or not it was some weird prophecy and really what was to come or just some stuff to scare Tobias into joining.

That sounded like something this ghost idiot would do, powerful as he was. Brainwashing folks for his own interest wasn’t so far-fetched.

Was it all true ?

Were the Sentinels going to fail at stopping Viego ? Were they meant to fail ? Malcolm didn’t want to think too much about that because after all he had come since he was hopeful. He might die in the process and he couldn’t tell he didn’t care. Of course he did. He didn’t want to leave Tobias behind.

Like before.

If at first during their ‘talk’ he hadn’t really thought about that specific choice of words, the days and weeks afterward were enough to overthink and dig into the issue. Tobias had talked a little about his past, not much and only the bare minimum. Exile, life all alone and distrust for anyone who dared getting too close.

Malcolm was an exception but it did take so much time to reach that point.

Being left behind. Again.

That fear was understandable but to the point of selling his soul ? Alright, he was forced into it and potentially it involved some bits of psychological torture, it wasn’t really Tobias’ fault.

Nonetheless, now he refused to come with Malcolm, which narrowed too much the solutions. All he could hope now was either to successfully convince Tobias to change sides before the final confrontation – which was basically impossible given how bad their first conversation went – or to defeat Viego and pray everything sacred in this world that it meant breaking the bound between him and his victims turned allies.

Maybe it would work. No one had tried yet but it was also the end-goal of Sentinels to kick Viego’s ass before he ruined everything.

A big fight was coming soon.

The Sentinels of Light were all aware that soon they would have to get in direct confrontation with Viego – who since then hadn’t really tried hard, mostly because he didn’t have everything he needed for his plans. His plan was known, of course. Get the wife back by gathering the several pieces of her soul, all that weird magic stuff. The issue was, now it seemed that he got everything except two, since the last problem with Captain Fortune.

Senna and Gwen were the last ones. And Viego wasn’t going to sit on his throne forever waiting for them.

It might happen in very near future, sooner than they thought.

Two last pieces of the puzzle, always together. Of course Senna and Lucian were well aware of the constant risk, that once more Viego would directly come to them as soon as he got the chance. So maybe it was smart to beat him to that and be the ones to set up a trap. Lure him somewhere and force him into a fight in their own terms.

Malcolm was all for it but he silently feared the outcome for his partner. He needed more time while also wanting to find Tobias as soon as possible. If they came directly to Viego then of course he would get all of his allies ready to fight. Tobias included.

It could go wrong really fast. If it only risked his own life, Malcolm wouldn’t care much about, glad for the occasion to shoot at things and maybe save the world too. But what about Tobias ? What could happen to him ? Vayne would be there too and honestly, Malcolm wished she just wouldn’t be there at all, because of the threat she offered. Yeah she was efficient. Too efficient. She might want to hurt Tobias or even kill him.

It wasn’t like him but Malcolm was feeling a little anxious about that fight to come. It was going to happen, no one could change that.

In a way, it felt like before the heist that got him sent to the Locker. Everything could go wrong and this time, he knew it in advance.

He could act tough and reckless all he wanted, deep inside he was worried about the outcome. They would probably win but at what cost ?

~

Where is he ?

Malcolm didn’t like that at all, hiding for now with most of the other Sentinels while they waited for Viego. Only Senna was out there, ready to face their enemy.

No sign of Viego yet but the Mist was crawling all over the place like during harrowing, giving this ancient ruin quite a moldy look. It sucked. He wished they could have found another solution but this was the best they could do. It did remind him of few times Tobias had to be the bait in rare occasions but Malcolm didn’t find that funny right now.

They waited, in atrocious silence. Lucian looked like he was ready to jump into action and shred the poor guy who would dare lay a single finger on Senna. Better not test him. Plus, Malcolm related well. Only issue, he couldn’t see his own partner yet.

A chill seized him again and everyone around winced similarly.

Steps were heard, boots against stone echoing nearby. It could only be Viego.

From that point everything went too fast.

First Viego tried to forcefully take Senna’s fragment, thus falling in the trap as Malcolm sent a smoke grenade and all everyone spurred into action. It went oddly well, they managed to strike him down fast enough and Gwen immobilized him.

After that all went to shit.

Before he knew it, Viego managed to swap his sword and take Gwen down, getting free at the occasion. First big fail. Then there was a huge blast catching all of them off guard. Too bad for him, Malcolm was thrown against some old wall and it knocked him out for a time. Second big fail.

When he came back to his senses, it was already too late. Viego had open some kind of portal to another place and took Gwen and Senna with him. Fuck ! Lucian wasn’t far behind but he got stopped by a new arrival.

There came Viego’s friends.

Again, everything was going fast without any break but Malcolm did pause when he saw Tobias. There he was, after all that time lost and arguments. He wasn’t alone, there was that Pantheon guy folks had told him about, as well as Missy Fortune, the dragon lady, the Ionian lady Irelia had sadly warned him about and an awful Noxian guy already screaming at them like crazy.

So to say, a lot of company at once. Hopefully everyone would get someone to fight.

Ah…

It hurt again but it wasn’t time for that. Now he had to focus on getting Tobias alive out of this. Maybe check on the Sentinels too but he trusted them enough to take care of the fight.

Their gazes met during that eerie time before the fights, when no one had dared to start it all with new violence. Malcolm hated seeing nothing at all in Tobias’ composure. Was he even there anymore ?

That time didn’t last, the Noxian idiot flung his spinning axes at them and chaos ensued. Everyone rushed into the fight.

Don’t lose him again, don’t…

Easy to say but he had to save his own ass for now since he seemed to catch Fortune’s interest, judging from the few bullets he already had to dodge.

« Leave me the fuck alone, I ain’t shooting at you ! »

« Well you’ll have to if you want to stay alive. Come here you coward ! » Her tone was dark, whatever that meant. She sounded like she was having too much fun being here.

Why me.

If he was to fight someone, he would rather shoot at ghouls since these were already dead or someone he already didn’t know. Like Captain Fortune. Honestly, he had nothing against her nor a good opinion because she had clearly set them up to get tortured by Gangplank as mean to kill him but like hell Malcolm would fuck with someone he knew. And in all that mess he had lost Tobias from sight.

« Fuck ! »

No other choice, he riposted. It wasn’t like Sentinels’ weapons killed them on the spot.

Everything got drowned out by the constant fight and chaos. How as he supposed to find Tobias in all this ? There were bullets, axes, magic flying around, impossible to understand. Malcolm tried to spot a few lost cards but that was difficult.

For a time, he fought. What else could he do ?

That didn’t last. In the middle of this hell, after dodging flames from that dragon, he spotted Tobias. And Tobias spotted him. Really, it felt silly but he froze where he was shielding himself from a new barrage of bullets.

Get him.

Maybe it was the only chance he would get.

« Tobias ! » He knew he already had his attention but there was something visceral in that urge to reach and call for him.

It got drowned by the ruckus of the fights, too loud to be even ignored. No matter what, Tobias seemed to come to him, never looking away.

Malcolm closed distance too, there was no other way around. Difficult move because of the cheer animosity lingering in the area and risk to get shot at but he didn’t care. He had found Tobias, after all.

They weren’t that far from each other so it gave him a good view in the instant when Tobias got shot. Golden arrow not far from the heart, looking too familiar.

HEY NO.

Too far at the moment, Malcolm could only watch Tobias wince and collapse from the power of the shot. Everything went slow at once.

It could only be Vayne. As panic settled in, Malcolm looked around quickly and indeed found her standing on top of some ruins, with her crossbow armed and ready with another arrow. She shot him ! Now for real he didn’t like her even in the slightest. Of course she had something bad going on in her head but to that point ?

« Vayne, you bitch ! Stop ! »

« You’ll thank me later. » Nothing in her tone but cold cruelty. No remorse.

Hopefully he managed to run and get between Tobias and her before another shot, which would have be tragic. One was too much already. Immediately Malcolm knelt by his partner’s side, doing his best to shield him from whatever Vayne would want to throw at them. There was some good in this world, next second she had to dodge a spear aimed at her and so her attention was caught elsewhere. Good.

First thing, Tobias was still alive, what a relief. Fuck… He looked a bit shocked by the whole thing but not on the brink of dying. Still, the arrow stuck out dangerously close to his heart, just a bit above.

« Hey, Tobias, can ya hear me… ? Look at me. » With as much care as he could muster, he cradled Tobias’s face so he could look at him without effort.

Another time, another chaotic night, another glimpse of vulnerability.

« Mal… »

Tobias’ voice came out a little shaken but that aside, he reacted well. The shock seemed to dissipate, only leaving pain instead. Malcolm saw him wince as he made an effort to sit up, clinging to his serape. However Tobias got a hand over the arrow and yanked it out painfully.

« What—Wait, don’t do that ! You fucking idiot, you just gonna bleed out now. »

However, no matter what he said to him, Tobias looked out of it. As if he didn’t care about it. But that was a wound, he couldn’t just shrug it off. It struck Malcolm silent to see that kind of reaction, only a gaze clouded by that greenish glow. No idea what he was supposed to do now but he pressed against the wound, surprised not to see as much blood as expected. However it was too close of that strange triangular hole Tobias had over his chest, where something alike the Black Mist came out. Yet another creepy detail.

That weird silence last, only interrupted by the constant noise around. Fuck, it’s not safe. But what could he do with Tobias now ? The only comfort was knowing the fights had slowly shifted elsewhere, near that portal.

Out of nowhere, Tobias reached for his collar and tugged it, although there wasn’t the same animosity as the latest time he had done that.

« It’s not too late. Join us, you still have a place by my side… »

« Ain’t happening, I told you. Anyway your Viego won’t get out of this, not this time. »

Tobias took yet another shaky breath, obvious not feeling that good. To be honest, he did look like he had a rough time.

« He already has the two girls, it’s too late. Please Malcolm, you don’t have much time left. Come with me… ? »

« Stop talking, you’re wounded. Let’s move before we take a lost bullet. »

« Don’t leave me. »

That flicker never last but every time, for a few seconds Tobias sounded too human. With the last strengths he had he pulled Malcolm lower to him, stopping him from going away.

…Fuck. He was never good at it, being sentimental wasn’t for them but since Tobias first got taken away, it brought back to the surface so many hidden feelings. Things he hadn’t been able to express yet because they were supposed to be good forever, these silly feelings, everything. So yeah, it hit too close to home to have Tobias cling to him, asking him not to leave.

« …Never leaving you behind. I swear. » Why was that so difficult to say now ? Of course he cared, he had lost his partner and risked not to get him back. « We’re partners, after all. »

And never had he seen Tobias get so emotional behind the veil of corruption. Hopeless. Malcolm froze well right then, never sure if that was smart to say or not, especially in such crappy situation.

It did catch him off guard when Tobias suddenly pulled him for a kiss, a hand over his face with increasing need. Oh. Well, maybe now he could stop thinking for once. It was too vulnerable to stop so he responded as well, holding Tobias closely until they focused solely on each other.

How long since the last kiss ? He couldn’t remember.

Too long.

Maybe it wasn’t the best of choices, some kind of trick to convince him to join or any funny business but by now he couldn’t care less. Tobias kept clinging to him for dear life, kissing his breath away.

All this got interrupted out of nowhere by Tobias, again. This time he put some distance between them, which caused Malcolm to frown. What now ? What he found confused him instead. A gasp came out of Tobias and he clutched at whatever part of Malcolm he had been holding, all tense at once. Nothing to thing in that unfocused gaze.

« Tobias ?? Are you okay ? »

The real kick was to see that same Black Mist leaving him at once, like poison drained from a wound.

Then it was over, as quick as it started. A slow exhale as Tobias lied limp in his arms.

Uh, wait. Wait, wait, wait. It’s gone ?

« What the fuck… Tobias, you hear me ? »

At least he looked pretty alive for now, although Malcolm got another spike of panic so he went to check his pulse. Far too normal, maybe a tad fast but that was still good to see. After the initial shock, Tobias seemed to get back to him, eyes closed as his breath evened.

« Tobias ? »

When he opened his eyes, it was like before. Only that blueish glow of his, so typical of his own magic. It didn’t last though, surely because he had no use for it at the moment. Nonetheless, Malcolm had to stay quiet because he was almost certain Tobias wasn’t corrupted anymore. There wasn’t even that hole over his chest and save for his white hair, he would look quite normal. Except about the lack of composure but Malcolm didn’t blame him at all.

Wait, how… ? Did I just… ?

If he had known all along a good kiss could help, maybe he would have done it sooner. Honestly, he was far too confused but there was now this far too exciting bit of news, Tobias wasn’t possessed anymore. Too happy. He had to tell the others.

« HEY GUYS ! I did it ! I saved Tobias ! » He turned around to yell at the others but that was also how he caught up with reality.

What—

Everything was silent now, no fighting anymore. Even the Black Mist was gone, leaving a rather cloudy sky instead of that nasty fog. Malcolm couldn’t see everyone from where he was but he spotted many of the other Sentinels. Riven was the one closest to them and she gave him the most confused look ever.

« …Viego isn’t anymore. Senna, Gwen and Akshan just got back. »

Bless her soul for filling him in on the fights but now Malcolm felt like a clown. He could indeed see Senna and Lucian hugging. So it was really over.

What he didn’t expect either was to see the other corrupted folks just stop. Some had dropped to their knees. Only the Noxian one was looking around like an idiot but at least he was quiet now.

Light tugging caught his attention again back on Tobias, who seemed a little shaky in his moves but somehow that one wound wasn’t worrying anymore.

« Fuck. How are you doing ? »

Because yeah, now Tobias was supposed to be fine. Viego wasn’t a problem anymore and it really looked like everyone was free of his control. Why didn’t it look good then ? Tobias stayed in absolute silence, shocked but not like earlier. More like disbelief this time, fear.

…Not good. Something was obviously wrong.

« …Tobias ? »

« I… » Having stopped holding Malcolm, he just took his face in his hands. « It’s over… ? »

« Yeah, he’s gone. You’re free. »

It was puzzling to see Tobias react like that when he was supposed to be free indeed. Too concerning for Malcolm, it sobered him up instantly. …That’s not fine ? Since Tobias didn’t talk much after that, a bit too shocked, Malcolm took him closer for a hug. Maybe that would help for now.

« It’s gonna be alright, I swear. I got you. »

What scared him most was Tobias’ silence, before his behavior and increasing worry. However it wasn’t that hopeless because he soon hugged Malcolm back, nuzzling closer a bit urgently. There he properly hid, clinging to fabric while light tremor shook his frame.

Uhoh. What the fuck is going on now ?

There would be no answer, no one could have planned how the final fight would go. Nor how the previously corrupted folks would react. Malcolm sure guessed there was a lot to register at once but it was frightening to see Tobias deathly silent on this.

Were these sobs ? Aw shit.

« Uhh hey, it’s all good. I’ll get you back home and there you’ll rest, alright ? »

Better move soon but honestly, Malcolm had no idea what would happen now. It was done, congrats, Viego was dealt with. A good time to celebrate and drink but he couldn’t get on that cheerful mood when Tobias was doing bad.

Whatever was going on, it was really serious.

~

It didn’t get better, at least not yet. The time after the fights was special, they had to look after each other first and take care of the wounded. Good news of the day, no one had died although some got serious injuries. Nothing that wouldn’t heal. The soonest they could, they took everyone to the closest lighthouse, including Viego’s previous allies, now free of his grasp.

It was… strange.

Malcolm had yet to realize he managed to get Tobias back with him in the end. At last together. Of course he was happy but since Tobias got back to himself, he hadn’t said much yet. In their daily life, Malcolm wouldn’t have complained because it was nice to have a break after all the teasing and sass but now wasn’t the time.

After talking briefly with the others, he quickly fucked off with Tobias to find some space for them. Malcolm grabbed some food too, just in case.

There they were, in a rather small room that had a bed and very basic stuff that Malcolm got from other rooms so it would be a minimum comfortable.

Tobias was eating for now, which was a good sign but he still remained as blank and silent as before. Not exactly shocked but definitely not doing good, at least mentally.

Nothing else to do. Malcolm did try to think about what could be the issue but this wasn’t something to be guessed. Possibly something about guilt because the other ‘ruined’ folks were all in a similar state, more or less vocal about it. That sucks. At the same time, most of them didn’t choose to be Viego’s pet, they were coerced into joining and surely did pretty awful stuff.

Yeah but we did bad stuff too every day. We’re no saints. And they would run back to that lifestyle soon enough.

He kept waiting, in case something could be done to help.

Soon Tobias was done with his plate. At least he had some appetite but it was the only bright side with that quickly healing wound he got. Whatever they were under the corruption, it still helped them a little.

In all that gloomy mood, there was still some hope when Tobias got up from his chair and joined Malcolm where he was sitting at the edge of the bed, leaning against him.

Ah, great.

It felt natural to welcome him closer, holding him too.

« …Wanna talk ? Alright, it’s a bit worrying ‘cause you don’t seem to do good right now. You’re safe now, you can talk. »

The result was quick, he felt Tobias tense a little against.

« I’m fine. »

« And that’s maybe the biggest lie I’ve heard from you. Come on, Tobias, do better. »

Not much but already more than he had heard from him in the latest hours.

« …You don’t understand. »

« Of course I don’t, you don’t tell me shit about anything. » He didn’t mean it to come out accusatory like that but it was a sore spot for years.

Too telling, this wasn’t fine for Tobias, he clung to Malcolm’s arm again, which hid partially his face from him too. A few shaky breaths came and went.

« What’s eating you ? Ya know I’m no one to judge, we all go through hard times. …I missed you a lot, for a time I thought I’d never see you again. »

As sudden as anything before, he saw Tobias get on his lap instead, this time hugging him for good with all his strength. Aww. If that wasn’t enough to make him a bit soft at least then no idea what else would do.

« I missed you too. But… »

« But what ? You’re back, all is fine. Ain’t letting you go now. »

« I’ve… I’ve failed you. »

…What is that, now ? Since it seemed very painful to Tobias, it had to be something that bothered him a lot but Malcolm didn’t understand what that meant.

« When ? »

A deep breath was taken before the latter spoke again, holding him close : « I failed saving you… Not once I could convince you to come with me. »

« He’s gone, Tobias. No need to save me, we’re all alive. »

« That’s not the matter ! I know it’s too late, whatever they did to him now Viego is done. …But now it also means we’re going to die. »

« …How ? I thought he was the big threat around. There’s someone else ? »

« Not that, Malcolm. » For once it was reassuring to hear him get a little annoyed because he wasn’t understood correctly. « We’re going to die one day. »

It ended on a sad note again, with fear.

« I mean, that was always the plan, no ? Everyone dies one day, we just make sure it happens as late as possible. »

All this sounded like some kind of joke but he didn’t like how serious Tobias was about all this. He seemed to be too frightened about something. But this was old news, of course they would die. Why be surprised ?

« He… He promised me immortality. That was the deal when he caught me, eternal life for you and me unless I failed to get you on our side. We were that close to succeed but now we’re just going to die one day. You’re going to die… »

There was a lot of unpack here but he had no idea where to start. Then Malcolm remembered. Viego showed him stuff.

« Yeah. » How inspiring, bravo. Oh sometimes he wished it came easily to help someone, at least Tobias. « …Are you that scared about me dying ? It won’t happen soon, you know me. The Locker didn’t get me so I think I’m good until I’m all old and gray. »

« …I don’t want to be left behind again. I just wish I’ll be the first to die so I won’t have to be left alone mourning you. » After that he got all quiet but nothing was louder than his reaction, clinging to Malcolm until he definitely registered the crying.

That explained why Tobias wasn’t keen on letting him see, hiding the best he could this very vulnerable side of his.

Pain came back. Malcolm practically never got to hear that kind of stuff from Tobias unless it was too late. Whatever Viego did, this was the result, putting some light of his fears. There was nothing that came to his mind to say now so Malcolm simply hugged him tighter, rubbing his back. For a man used to wearing a mask and carrying on with that persona, it was a lot to show.

« I know it sucked a lot for you when you were sent to the Locker but… it was hard for me too. You were just… gone. I couldn’t take you back and wasn’t even sure you were still alive. But you came to find me again… »

Ah. Well, at that time Malcolm was feeling a little murderous because he genuinely thought Tobias had gotten him sent to the Locker but in the end they had talked it out. Afterward he heard that too. Tobias had been awfully emotional that first night after the bay went on fire. Like right now.

Again he didn’t feel like he would add anything useful so he let Tobias tell everything he had over his heart.

« I hate this. I hate… feeling so weak when we had been so powerful. It was so easy, I could have gotten us eternity together but now everything is just… too much. »

« What is too much ? »

« Everything ! That we’re slowly dying now that Viego is gone, that you could die before me, that I can’t help missing what could have been with Viego’s victory while also hating all he had us do… I had no choice, Malcolm, but we had to kill… How many are dead now because of us ?! It felt normal and necessary but now it just hurts… »

Until his voice died by itself.

Enough to let silence fall once more, only interrupted by shaky sobs and warm tears.

They killed ? How stupid of him, of course they did. The many harrowings brought over cities and islands and many other regions he had not heard of before that still had a lot of casualties. Was it directly Viego’s goal or not ? After all, he was mainly after specific items and persons to bring back his wife but it wouldn’t be surprising that he unleashed the Black Mist and everything else just for the fun and making everyone regret opposing him.

It was strange to think about. Tobias had blood over his hands. Crime was part of their job and not that special in Bilgewater but this seemed to bother him a lot. Maybe Malcolm couldn’t understand because for him it wasn’t that important.

Not like he carried a lot of guilt every day.

He was possessed, doubt he would try to kill someone on purpose.

But what could he say now ? There was so much at once, maybe too much to deal with in a day. Malcolm held him through it, doing his best not to get emotional too because yes, he was affected a minimum by Tobias being so distressed. Fuck, calm down.

« Like you said, you didn’t have a choice. It’s fine, you’re not the first killer in Bilgewater. Anyway we’ll just stick to heists and robbery, alright ? »

Tobias didn’t answer him at all, too overwhelmed in the moment. That was fine for Malcolm, he had tried to bring a lighter topic but it wasn’t useful. Maybe all that Tobias needed now was to cry until he couldn’t anymore. No doubt he hadn’t been that free for a long time.

« There, it’s fine. » If they were to stay like this for a while then he could get a little comfortable, cuddling Tobias with careful gestures. « We’ll talk later, if ya want. Looks like you still carry a lot of stuff but we’ll deal with that. »

In the process Tobias’ hat had fallen on the bed but for once he didn’t seem to care at all. No wonder why. Malcolm idly grabbed the hat, thoughts wandering a little. Little by little the crying came to an end, at least it wasn’t as heartbreaking and loud. Doing better ? Small success for him, he still didn’t know how to deal with someone crying. Good for him usually Tobias never did.

Usually.

« I guess it’s stupid to tell you not to worry about me dying ‘cause you’ll still be scared but I swear I’m prepared. Look. »

There were some shy moves from Tobias, parting slightly to indeed look. Meanwhile Malcolm went through his pockets, looking for something he treasured. It was always at the same place, rather easy to get in case everything went south. One of Tobias’ cards.

Being so close to each, there wasn’t a lot of space but he still got it out and showed it to him. The card wasn’t old since it was from when they got officially back together but it was a little bent since he kept it always in his clothes with him. Blue shine bringing some peace. A chance to escape.

« …You still have it. » Slowly Tobias reached to take it, considering it with wonder.

« Yeah, of course. I mean, that was all I had left from you when they turned you, so I took care of it. I thought about using it once to find wherever the fuck you were but didn’t. It would have been stupid and dangerous. »

A chuckle escaped Tobias, proof that possibly he was doing better : « You wouldn’t have last one second, though maybe you could have escaped with the effect of surprise. Glad to know you still use your brain when I’m not here. »

« Hey, fuck you, my brain works well, thank you. »

Easy to bicker again but somehow Malcolm felt his voice tighten again, it felt just so normal when minutes earlier Tobias was weeping all the tears of his body.

« Never doubted it. » It turned short but was simply explained by his observation, eyes never leaving that blue card. « …I’m glad to know you still have it. »

« Would be dumb to throw it away. Now it’s clear, if I ever get in troubles, we both know what to do. »

Anything to avoid the fiasco of that heist. Never again.

« …Not leaving you behind this time. » He sounded too serious and it did remind of the latest vulnerability.

Graciously he gave back the card to Malcolm without any more words. Then Tobias kissed him.

Malcolm couldn’t help it, he remembered the last time they kissed in the middle of chaos, right while Viego was getting his ass kicked somewhere else. I don’t care, I still saved him. He might not be the one having stopped the idiot king but at least he had done everything he could for Tobias.

The kiss was nice but he felt that lingering sadness. It wasn’t the passion of the night or anything heated, merely a need to reconnect and appreciate each other. Plus it wasn’t like Tobias could move on so fast, he was genuinely scared of losing him early. Now they just held each other, renewing the kiss often for as long as they had love to offer.

It felt good to be together at last.

~

Night had long fallen but it didn’t mean much for the Sentinels for now. A lot of them had stayed up to celebrate a little being alive and their victory in general, some had left to be in private together since there was a lot of catching up to do and a few of their new guests had started warming up a little although it was obviously a struggle to accept everything that had happened.

Malcolm did join the others briefly to get a few drinks for him and Tobias but he didn’t stay, since the latter wasn’t still doing that good. And honestly, he hadn’t gone so far just to not spend every second with Tobias now that he was back.

There were some priorities in life.

After the initial talk they had in private, there wasn’t much more confessions and difficult things to talk about. Honestly, Malcolm considered he had heard enough for the day and that Tobias deserved to take it easy. The other possessed folks weren’t doing better either but he at least had someone close to talk with.

No more crying at least, that was a relief. Not that Malcolm disliked it, he was just glad to know Tobias wasn’t having a bad time.

However Tobias couldn’t sleep. Not yet.

He looked a little exhausted, which was oddly explained by their previous power now gone, but couldn’t find any rest at the moment. Malcolm always stayed in that same room, cleaning Destiny since he had time and he wanted to stay up a little longer. But he saw how often Tobias changed position in bed, visibly awake.

Maybe I should go to sleep with him ?

Sleep would be useful indeed but he would rather not bother Tobias. He didn’t seem to mind his company nor contact – he would seek it even – but there was this overall vulnerability. Earlier Tobias had another episode of guilt or whatever that was and so he stayed away from Malcolm. That at least he recognized it from before, the need to stay away only the time to compose himself again and seem presentable. Stupid because Malcolm didn’t mind at all seeing him emotional but hey, Tobias remained Tobias and some things never changed.

…Fuck it, let’s sleep.

Destiny was put aside with care then Malcolm got up and walked up to the bed, sitting at the edge although there wasn’t much room.

It didn’t take long for Tobias to turn and look at him, with a sweet note when he silently reached for Malcolm’s hand and held it.

« You can’t sleep ? »

« …No. » He shook his head, looking away again. « Come to bed ? »

« Yeah. Just let me get ready for sleep. »

Too quiet and too odd mood. It felt like their first night after the reunion but different, this time they had been actively looking for each other out of love, not possible regrets and hatred. Malcolm tried not to pause too much because of the mood, acting like usual because maybe this was all Tobias needed, a semblance of normality in their daily life. To show that everything was back to what it was. He got up from bed and undressed a little so it would be a minimum comfortable to sleep in.

Silence again, when he finished and joined Tobias in their a bit too small bed, creaking under the added weight but at least that was a reason to hold each other close. This was what Tobias did instinctively, embracing him fast until he was snuggled up to Malcolm. He heard a deep breath taken then exhaled, it was time to relax a little.

« How are you doing ? »

« I’m alive, I guess. »

« Pretty sure you are. What’s bothering you ? »

Malcolm already had an idea because it was so much on Tobias’ plate at once but he still asked in case he wanted to vent a little and needed some comfort.

No answer came this time, it was always 50/50. Since it was like that, Malcolm did what felt right and caressed a little Tobias’ hair. It had gone white and he had to get used to it but so far no problem for him.

« It’s just… why me ? The whole thing is a mess and I just wish I could have avoided it all. I know we joke about my luck but this time I feel cheated. »

Oh he could have followed on with the joke indeed but it looked like Tobias wouldn’t take it well. For once Malcolm needed some tact. Dealt quite a shitty hand this time, yup.

« They say it wasn’t done randomly, if that’s some comfort for ya. Viego took people he could convince using their dark side, that kind of stuff. Yeah sounds stupid but that’s what Senna said. Like, he’s playing with people’s need for revenge, greed. Their fears. »

« Then why not you too ? Why did he get me and not you ? » It was too sudden and a little loud, too emotional as he stared at Malcolm.

« Eh, I thought I wasn’t useful to him ? I don’t know, maybe he didn’t care, maybe he couldn’t find shit to use against me so I’d join. » All he cared about was Tobias. Wait. He thought about something. « …Maybe he thought you’d get me to join. »

Given how tightly Tobias held him and the lack of answer afterward, it had to be a lot again.

« Just an hypothesis. Anyway we won’t see him again, doesn’t matter who he could have caught or not. »

If only they could just move on, go back to Bilgewater like before and do some robbery again like the world hadn’t risked ending earlier. I hope that will help him. Nothing better than diving back into daily life to get better, at least that was how Malcolm saw it.

« …He had something to use against me. That’s what you just said no ? That he played on our fears. »

« Yeah, though it depends on the person, I guess. For you it was some sort of greed, since you wanted immortality ? Didn’t take you as the type to want it but hey, whatever floats your boat. »

Saying it aloud, Malcolm knew he was wrong. Well, greed made sense for them since they were criminals doing some thief stuff. That was what they preferred and Tobias’ expensive clothing habits supported it well. But no, it sounded wrong. Tobias had been far too scared by the whole ordeal, if it were by greed then he maybe wouldn’t have reacted that way.

A form of greed fueled by fear. The fear of dying alone.

« For us. Immortality for us. I thought it was clear I don’t want you to die before me. » The way he spoke, it all got interrupted a little fast before he took a deep breath. « That’s… I guess that’s what he used against me, no ? He offers a too good deal – who am I kidding, I didn’t have a choice. …He just knew I wouldn’t say no, not when he convinced me you would die eventually. »

« Looks like he got it all wrong. So you really believed him ? »

« Of course ! Why not ? I don’t think you can understand how powerful he was, I can’t get yet how he managed to turn Karma on our side, as well as that Aspect. It was like… he’d just need to snap his fingers and then it could become reality. »

What a wake up call it must have been. I mean, they were kinda brainwashed. That day, Tobias had begged him to come and after all it seemed that he was honest. It remained strange that he would be so himself with his own interests despite the forced corruption.

« It wouldn’t have happened anyway. Not sure if he had won he’d be that nice. »

« …I know… I think I knew it before but it was my only solution to get you back. »

Ah shit. It sounded like Tobias’ got a little teary. Instant reflex, Malcolm hugged him a bit strongly since he didn’t have the exact words he might need. Plus Tobias still liked that and it didn’t change. Soon it became clear it wasn’t nearly as bad as earlier, just some emotion and the need to be held for a while. He guessed he couldn’t relate but empathy and compassion were free to give.

«  Shh, it’s over. Do you wanna stop talking or does it help ? »

It was muffled against Malcolm’s shirt but Tobias spoke : « …I can’t sleep but silence doesn’t help either. Just stay here, please. »

« Aye, would be my pleasure to bore you to sleep. Not going anywhere but careful, I might fall asleep by accident. »

« Then do, I don’t care as long as you stay here. »

Clingy, like before. For Malcolm it was the source of secret endearment and that fond feeling that never left but with everything he learned about Tobias, he thought it might be linked to some kind of trauma. A river guy who cannot swim. That was the other biggest fear and yet Tobias had fought it pretty well to save Malcolm. So it meant it wasn’t the worst thing that frightened him in this world.

Honestly, yeah, he was healthily proud and glad that his partner cared that much about him. On the other hand, it sucked to realize it might be for bad reasons. Tobias had told him few things from his past but never went further into details since it seemed so painful.

Do I ask him ?

That sounded like the best question to ruin the night for them both but Malcolm wasn’t just curious, he was looking for the source of everything. That fear of death of a partner was the reason Tobias got turned.

«  Tobias ? »

« Yes ? »

«  Maybe you won’t like it but I gotta ask : were you that attached to anyone you loved ? Not saying it’s bad, I’m just wondering why you’re that scared of me dying soon. »

…Congrats. Tobias tensed in their embrace and it told more than enough about how tactful that question was. Why is it so hard ? He just wanted to help. Malcolm half expected him to get out of bed to compose himself again and then pretend it didn’t happen.

« …First I’ve never loved someone as much as you. It’s hard enough to trust anyone in Bilgewater, you’re the only one who stuck around enough to really know me. »

S weet confession, with nothing new at all but Malcolm was a proud guy and nothing would change that either.

« Lucky me, then. » He wished he could have joked but it could have been taken all wrong.

« Not a question of luck, I guess you’re exactly what I’ve always needed and wanted in a person. Don’t let it get to your head though. »

That light note was appreciated, not replacing the general vulnerability but showing it was still only the two of them.

« I won’t. But why take so long ? I remember it was a pain just for you to trust me and you didn’t even admit it for years. Why ? »

« …Because relationships mean nothing. Love and loyalty mean nothing. » Tobias’ voice got quieter, at the brink of a whisper full of emotion. « It cost too much to trust someone again so I avoided it like the plague but you were too stubborn and obviously a good guy for me to ignore. »

« Say it, it was because I looked dumb enough not to betray you. »

Better keep it light when in fact Malcolm felt the opposite. This wasn’t so foreign knowing Tobias and his attitude at the beginning of their partnership, he acted all smooth and amenable while not giving any kind of information about himself. Nothing. Impossible to seize like the sea. But it was still scary. Love and loyalty meaning nothing. Since it took so long for Tobias to confess feelings, this must have been rough.

« I wouldn’t say that but yes, you looked like a guy with strong principles and for once I found you safe to be around. …I hated myself a little when I realized I loved you more than I should. »

« Glad to know you have horrible taste in men then, at least I got a shot. Seriously, why all this ? I don’t think you just came to Bilgewater and started to distrust everyone. I mean, there are awful lots here but most here are honest folk. Partnership that went wrong ? »

If that was before their own relationship then Tobias had to be young when it happened.

« Not a partnership. » A pause came before he spoke again : « I told you I was forced into exile when I was a kid. That’s when… I had to survive all alone. »

« A kid ? How old ? »

« I don’t know, maybe 10 ? »

Tobias’ voice simply stopped, face pressed into Malcolm’s shirt to muffle a few sobs. It had to be the origin of the issue.

…That’s young. Everyone got a crappy life here, included Malcolm but if that still bothered Tobias to this day, it had to be extremely shitty.

« Can you tell more about it ? Sounds like you need to talk. »

« …I’m fine, I’m fine. I can tell you. » There was some effort to compose himself. « It’s just very old and… I guess that’s why I’m still scared of losing you. Since what I considered family left me behind. »

Deep breath again then Tobias resumed.

« We people from the Serpentine were a bit different, we had rules that I found stupid but there I grew up until I tried to defend my family and it went against the rules. So when it was time to go to another place, they just left me. I… I still remember it, night was falling and there was nothing else but the river and my people on their boats going away without a look back. »

So they abandoned him. Way to fuck up someone.

Time stretched a little after these sad words and Malcolm didn’t have anything to ask, he held him through it and stroked his hair slowly. In a day he had learned more about Tobias than over their whole partnership so it was a lot of unpack.

After more time to get back together, the latter moved in their embrace and his voice got less muffled : « You know I can’t swim. Back then, I couldn’t either but I would have learned but I don’t know, the sea just reminds me of the Serpentine and that day. I wish I could have swam back to them but no, there was just dark water and light fading away. Maybe if I knew I could have kept my family… »

« Maybe. It’s been decades though, not sure you’d get them back now. »

« I don’t want to. They’ve left me to fend for myself just ‘cause they were scared to stand up to strangers. …They’ve betrayed me, can’t go back on that. I just wish… I could move on and not stay stuck on that crap forever. They’re gone, I’m alive and I’m not alone anymore but I’ve been scared my whole life of being left behind again and again and again… »

Until it broke into more tears.

I’ll need a new shirt. Not now though and anyway, he couldn’t not care about him right now.

All the pieces of the puzzle were there and everything made sense. No need to delve deeper, he deemed it more than enough to understand. Further, it might just hurt Tobias for nothing. Though maybe he will need to work on that if he’s still scared. More than once Malcolm had been a bit of an asshole to him before, especially about him not being able to swim so now he felt bad.

« Enough for tonight, you need to sleep. But if ya wanna talk more, do it. I’m not going anywhere. » With a kiss to Tobias’ forehead, that should do.

« …Just swear you’ll keep the card. Please. I just need to know you’re safe. »

« I swear. Honestly, I do like being alive so I’ll try to stay this way. »

« Idiot. »

« I like you alive too, better stay safe or I’ll have to chase you down in the harbor once more. »

« You say that but that’s maybe the most meaningful thing someone ever did for me. Alright, you shot at me several times and could have killed me but you did more than my family. »

Curious time, the sensitivity remained as well as that broken voice but the episode was over and Tobias seemed to be back.

« Says the man who jumped right into the bay to save my ass when you could have just teleported somewhere dry and safe. You’re an idiot too and I love you. »

« Fuck off, you would have done the same. …I love you too. »

Some victories were small but had great impact, like finally hearing these latest words after years of denial and idiot’s games. Malcolm was happy about that step, for good reasons.

Nothing would ever top that so he didn’t say anything else, cuddling Tobias with some hopes that this time he would get some sleep. Both, if possible.

A last kiss was sneaked when Malcolm wasn’t paying attention.

« Tsk, what a romantic. »

« Shut up and goodnight. » Said in a chuckle, no regrets to find in that man.

Bickering felt safe, at least for a time Tobias could stay distracted from everything else. With that said, Malcolm really tried to rest now. The next days were going to be a little intense. Peaceful at last but busy nonetheless.

~

The first night together went well and since that point Malcolm was almost certain everything was getting better.

A few days had gone since the last fight that ended everything and some of them had already left the HQ. Life going back to normal, in a way. That was strange to think because the Ruination had an impact in all of the world, not just the Bilgewater area but also places Malcolm had vaguely heard of and some not at all.

Strange because he hadn’t really thought about what they would do afterward. He did have great hopes to survive and get his partner too but it was like no one had gotten so ahead since it all depended on the final clash. Now that it was done, everyone lingered around until they figured out what to do next.

There were a few of the newly recruited Sentinels of Light who decided to stay with Senna and Lucian for now, since it felt best with their goals and principles.

Not much for Malcolm and Tobias.

They had a pretty good life stealing and gambling around and now that hopefully everything was going back to normal, they could resume that train of life again. Honestly, he thought that was best for Tobias to go back to their habits. He was doing some progress dealing with all the baggage but it remained a heavy burden that couldn’t be undone in a week. The reason why he got turned for example was narrowly linked to his past and fears, that kind of thing.

So yeah, lot of things to do.

For now they stayed with the Sentinels but they planned to leave soon, maybe in a week or so. In itself, they had no reason to stay here but Captain Fortune was here too and she would maybe stay there for a while because she was going through a similarly existential struggle after the end. Once they’d go back to Bilgewater, Malcolm would try to find her crew so they stop being worried sick. If they were still alive.

No idea in what state they would find Bilgewater though but as long as there would be criminals to do crime and money to make, surely the city wasn’t close to die. Usually the meanest, the hardest to kill.

And if it wasn’t Bilgewater then they would surely go back to Piltover since words got out that somehow they did pretty good there. It would feel like a nice vacation for Tobias after all the shit they went through. Malcolm hadn’t suggested yet but he thought that was a good idea.

In the end, it felt oddly too peaceful now.

Merely a time of terror and constant worry and now he was back with his partner, they were both alive and well and Tobias would most likely get better. Malcolm remembered one of the latest nights when they had talked again because there was no better setting than when they were both tired. When Tobias had admitted it felt better to talk. Oh he also said he hated the process because deep down it still felt a little unsafe to say too much but he had to realize day after day that there were no consequences at all.

And now he was back on his bullshit, being sassy as ever. Just close enough to annoy Malcolm but now it had the unexpected side-effect of making him emotional too, the separation had been so hard on him that it felt nice to see everything go like before. So it made Tobias laugh and tease more.

What a life.

The same man whom he had almost lost than found again, who always held him close at night.

Well, now Malcolm had another reason to stay alive and play it safe. But no need for that with enough luck.
