The Skeletons in Both Our Closets Plotted Hard to F*ck This Up

Summary:

A semi texting fic about the crows, but also a coffee shop au because they’re great.

Edit: I published the first three chapters of this fic as half texting, but I really didn’t like how it turned out. The original first three chapters are going to stay up but the re-write starts at chapter four. It’s no longer a texting fic, but it’s still a coffee shop au, and in essence it’s the same story.

Notes:

The title for the fic is from Cowboy Like Me and the chapter title is surprisingly from Ready for It which I know is a huge surprise. All of the chapter titles will be Taylor Swift quotes because I’m basic and she is in fact God and I would know I went to a Catholic school for 7 years.

(The original version of this story is chapter 1-3 but I’ve now re-written the story and that starts at chapter four)

Chapter 1: Are You Ready For It?

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Wylan & Inej

11:56am

Inej: Hey this is Inej from the orchestra you gave me your number I was wondering if you wanted to meet somewhere to practice for our duet

Wylan: Sure that would be awesome, would tomorrow at lunch work for you? We could meet at the music room?

Inej: Yup see you then

-

Earlier that day the conductor for the University of Ketterdam had decided to pair the violinist, Inej with Wylan for a duet at their next upcoming concert. Wylan didn’t understand why they decided to do that at all, since he played the flute. He looked up from his phone and realized it was already 12, and he wasn’t even halfway done with his project due tomorrow.

The next morning he rushes to his class, bitter coffee in hand. The Starbucks right next to the Van Eck Manor recently closed down and the cook only knows how to make the most bitter coffee he’s ever tasted.

Wylan meets Inej at the music room, and on his way there sees a flyer for a cafe not too far from the university. Surprisingly he has a great time with Inej. They practice the duet, and Wylan sees why the conductor chose the two instruments. The smooth notes of the violin blend right in with the airy flute.

“Hey, do you maybe want to get coffee after school or something? I know a great place” Inej asks him as he grabs his bag.

“Uh, sure”

-

The outside of the cafe is grey brick with a large bay window overlooking the street. The sign above the door is a led sign that simply says “The Crow’s Nest”. A small bell rings when they go inside and the barista who’s drying a cup looks up.

He has dark brown skin, with a long frame, and gangly limbs. His piercing gray eyes met Wylan’s as he began to look Wylan up and down. A brush spread across Wylan’s face as Inej nimbly stepped in front of him. “Jesper this is Wylan, Wylan this is Jesper.”

“Nice to meet you” the man, who he now knew was named Jesper says with a wink.

Wylan’s blush deepens and he quickly moves to a table in the corner. Inej comes back with two coffees in hand.
“Don’t mind him, he does that with everyone. Also I hope you don’t mind but Jesper insisted I give you this coffee. He said it’s his own special creation.”

Wylan looks over at the Jesper standing behind the counter who gives him an infectious grin. Inej moves the conversation on and before he knows it he already needs to head home.

Notes:

Feel free to leave criticisms in the comments. I will add another chapter since my family’s life has been threatened by my friend if I don’t, so byeee.
