Work Text:
Gyro Gearless did not fall in love. That much he knew for certain. He was dedicated to science and all but married to his work. His time was filled with experiments and meetings and building and not falling in love.
That was, until that insufferable intern all but crashed into his perfectly constructed life. Of quiet days and even quieter nights. But now? Well now he had a shadow. He had an attractive man following him around anxious and willing to please. And Gyro hated how much Cabrerra reminded him of himself. Before Akita had all but ruined any chance he wanted to make a name for himself that hadn’t automatically been linked to robot weaponry.
But now, with more aspects of his life being occupied with the energetic younger man, well, he couldn’t help but fall in love with him. And he hated it. He hated the feelings that bubbled up in his chest from the mere brush of their hands. Of the way he sometimes caught himself staring at the intern as he worked. Of the way Fenton seemed to have no concept of personal space. Of the way he made Gyro smile.
And here he was again, fondly looking at the intern, a dopey smile on his face as he worked. Until Fenton looked up, no doubt to ask a question or launch out his own hypothesis, catching Gyro gaze and turning a bright red as he looked off to the side.
Gyro’s eyes blew wide, trying (and failing) to make himself look busy as Fenton glanced back at him. He was quiet, and Gyro never hated the lack of sound so much. “ Um.” Fenton began, clearing his voice, “I was thinking about going to get something to eat.” He spoke, looking at the clock. They knew it would be a late night and they had both agreed to stay until the work was done. “Do you wanna come with me?” He asked.
And it was Gyro’s turn to turn red. His mouth had gone dry and had it always been warm in the lab? He’d have to check the temperature control unit when he had a moment. But he found himself replying without a second thought, “Sure.” And he wanted to ignore how high pitched his reply had been. But the smile that spread across Fenton’s face was enough to make him forget he had been a blushing mess just seconds prior.
