It became something of a routine for them, really. Every morning Langa would wait for Reki to skate up to him, and then they would skate together to school. And Wednesdays, well, Wednesdays were the best. On Wednesdays they would stop for breakfast at the convenience store.
Langa knew that most days Reki had breakfast at home with his family. He didn’t blame him, if he could have home-cooked breakfast too, he would. But his mom was busy all the time, and most days he didn’t feel like getting up early enough to make breakfast for himself. He usually just grabbed a granola bar and ate it on the way to meet Reki. It wasn’t enough, but it was better than nothing. That was part of the reason Wednesdays were so good, he could actually eat a proper meal in the mornings for once.
And Reki teased him about it, every time, without fail. He didn’t blame the other boy, it was a lot of food, after all. As much as he could hold in his arms without dropping it. Pastries, breakfast sandwiches, yogurt, anything and everything he could get his hands on was fair game. But his favorite, without a doubt, were the mini powdered donuts.
The sweetness of the sugar, the soft and crumbly cake-like texture, everything about them made the perfect dessert, er, breakfast food. Every Wednesday he made sure to get at least one package of powdered donuts, but more likely it was two or three. He would eat one for breakfast and then save the others throughout the day, snacking on them whenever he thought he could get away with it during class. He was always careful not to let the sugar make a mess. There had only been one time that he had gotten caught, and he was forced to stay after school for a week cleaning chalkboards. Never again. Nope, now he was an expert at not letting the sugar fall anywhere but into his mouth.
This Wednesday morning was no different from the others. He waited for Reki, they skated to the convenience store, and Langa bought an armful of breakfast foods while Reki bought one or two things for himself. Langa shoved most of the items into his bag, keeping only a few things out to eat on the way there, already knowing they would get to the school early enough to find a quiet place to sit and eat before class started. He ate a croissant and a bagel on the way, Reki making comments the whole time about how he would bail and choke himself, but Langa just shrugged. He had yet to actually hurt himself while eating on his board, no matter how many times Reki had lectured him about it.
They got to the school without incident, hopping off their boards and sitting down on a curb. Langa reached into his bag and pulled out the other pastries he had bought, and Reki did the same. He unwrapped a package of donuts and popped one in his mouth. Langa closed his eyes, savoring the flavor and humming softly to himself.
“How do you do that?” Reki’s voice broke through the silence.
Langa opened his eyes, turning to look at his best friend. “Hm? Do what?” He slid another donut into his mouth, tongue darting out to lick the stray sugar from his fingers before it could fall onto his clothes.
Reki waved a hand in the air, face flushing slightly. “You know... that .” He gestured to the donuts in Langa’s hand. “Not make a mess. Everytime I try to eat those things I always end up making a mess out of myself.” He unwrapped his own pastry, a full-sized glazed donut, and bit into it. “I don’t know how you manage to stay so...so perfect , all the time.”
Langa felt his own cheeks heat at the praise and he ducked his head down, swallowing the donut quickly. I’m not perfect. I’m not you . He fiddled with the wrapper in his lap, the crinkling sound under his fingertips not doing much to distract from the situation at hand. “Practice.” he finally decided. He looked up at Reki slowly, watching him finish the donut in his hand. “It’s just practice. I could show you, if you want.”
The redhead blinked and shrugged, scooting closer to Langa. He was so close their knees were almost touching. Langa frowned in confusion. “Okay, so show me,” Reki grinned, leaning in closer. Their faces were so close. Too close . Langa felt a strange noise in the back of his throat and he quickly shoved it down. He reached for another donut, about to press it to his lips, but hesitated, feeling the weight of Reki’s stare. His hand dropped back to his lap. “What?” Reki asked, tilting his head.
Langa shook his head, and raised his hand again. He switched course about halfway to his mouth and offered the donut to Reki. “I need to see how you do it, first.” It was a desperate excuse, he knew. But there was something so intense about Reki’s gaze on him, almost like he couldn’t breathe. The other boy shrugged and took the donut from Langa’s fingers, and the blue-haired boy suppressed a shudder at the slight contact. Was it cold out today? It must be. That’s the only reason for shuddering, right?
He watched, wide-eyed, as Reki bit into the donut, breaking it in half with his teeth and quickly chewing and swallowing the first half before finishing off the second. His eyes darted to where a light sprinkling of powdered sugar had dusted the other’s hoodie, and then back up to Reki’s face. There was sugar on his bottom lip, he realized with a jolt. Before Langa even realized he was moving, his hand was brushing lightly against Reki’s jaw, his thumb dragging across his bottom lip, which parted slightly under his touch. Then his thumb was in his own mouth, and he licked the sugar off, before realizing what had just happened.
“Um.” Reki choked out, leaning back a little. Langa’s face went bright red, and he blinked, bringing his eyes up to Reki’s. Reki’s face was also bright red, he noticed. “Um..yeah. So. Um. Yeah. I always...make a mess.” The other boy ducked his head down to his hoodie and absently brushed his hand over the sugar, letting it fall to the ground.
Langa’s fingers curled around the donuts in his lap and he felt a sudden urge to run into the bathroom and never come out. But...Reki hadn’t run away. That was...that was good, right? So it meant he shouldn’t run away, either. He cleared his throat absently and Reki looked up at him through his bangs. Langa picked up another donut. “So. You gotta just eat it in one go. One bite. No breaking it in half.” If Reki wasn’t going to talk about what just happened, then he wouldn’t either. Better to ignore it. He held up the donut and demonstrated, taking his time to chew slowly before swallowing. “See?” he asked, hands held out. “All clean.”
The other boy hadn’t said another word, hadn’t taken his eyes off of him, and was now leaning in close to him. Langa swallowed again, desperately holding himself still. “Not quite.” Reki murmured, and Langa blinked slowly. What is he talking about--oh. Reki’s lips were pressed softly against his own, and he closed his eyes, leaning into the touch. The kiss didn’t last long, and when they parted, they were both bright red. “Um, got it.” Reki said softly, glancing at Langa and giving him a small, shy smile.
Langa smiled back, touching his fingers to his lips. “Thanks.”
Yep. Wednesdays were definitely the best.
And powdered donuts tasted even better on Reki’s lips.
