Kazuki was just using Rei's place to crash while he got his life together. That was all it was - a mutually beneficial arrangement. He got free rent, Rei got in-house laundry and food.
Except, maybe, that wasn't what kept him around.
Maybe Kazuki liked being with Rei, and maybe Rei liked having him around too.

Summary
The constant in Rei's life was that he had Kazuki; his partner in crime and his partner in his free time. Kazuki is the only person he's ever trusted and possibly loved. Kazuki brought life and all the warm things into his life; he'd do anything for him. He left the mafia with him, the only home he's known, fled the city with him, became a fugitive with him for some time, and then became a co-parent to a child, who came from a broken home just like Rei did.
He loves his little family and he'd do anything to keep them safe.
Or: I watched ep. 3 and after all the trauma that was unleashed, I wanted to write an AU where Rei and Kazuki know each other's history (because they ARE each other's history) are sorta unhealthily codependent, as they were partnered at young ages and can only find safety in each other.

How unlucky for them that you never could take a fucking hint!”

“What,” Kazuki hisses, “what!” His heart was racing, with giddiness and pure relief. There was an army of butterflies in his stomach.
“Can’t we talk about this later?” Rei urges, and if he didn’t know any better, Kazuki would say that Rei sounded desperate.
Smirking, Kazuki wiggles his brows at Rei wildly, “aw, you wanna kiss me so bad.”Nine times out of ten, Rei is predictably closed off and cold. But that ten percent was beginning to grow faster than Kazuki was ready for.
