“You should not be here.” Spock’s voice filled the eerily silence of the med bay. Jim had all but snuck past the night nurse on duty and maybe bribed them with some chocolate in order to check in on his first officer. The nurse, easily bought when matters of sweets were presented, gladly allowed the captain entry. No need to ask where he was going, there was only one patient currently admitted.
“I had to make sure you were ok.” Jim replied, taking the moment to fully enter the room and pull the curtain close behind him. His steps faltered as he approached the biobed. His eyes scanned along the readings on the monitor, trying to make sense of the way the numbers seemed to jump and adjust and it made him feel slightly uneasy. Spock’s physiology was so different from both Vulcans and Humans that it was often difficult to make sense of the readouts.
And Spock relaxed, his eyes searching Jim’s expression, and responding to the query in his eyes. “My vital signs are stable, Jim.” Spock assured him, “As is my current physical status. You did not need to pay a visit, especially one so late.” their gazes met and Jim couldn’t help but let out a sigh.
“Well then, forgive me if I may be so illogical that I want to make sure you are ok.” Jim replied, closing the distance between them and sitting down in the chair next to Spock’s bed. His hand came out, pausing for a moment, before placing it on top of Spock’s hand.
The Vulcan’s eyes fluttered close, but still, he responded, “It is not illogical to be certain of the health of a loved one.” he replied, his eyes opening and head turning to look upon Jim’s face. “I am thankful that you do. I find it quite lonely here by myself.” he confessed, bringing Jim’s hand close to his face. His lips ghosted over flesh as he kissed him. “I find the bed is much colder and sleep harder to obtain without your presence next to me.” He let Jim’s hand fall, his eyes closing softly as he breathed.
And Jim couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face, “You are one romantic sap, Spock.” He teased, and Spock gave a sigh in response as sleep finally claimed him. And Jim stayed, falling asleep next to Spock like he did all the nights before.
